Barnett is speaking truth when he mentions how there is a lot of anger in Jiu Jitsu.

Yeah fr sometimes I catch myself going into a grind them out mentality in bjj

Agree passive agressive and high ego makes for poor choices and there is something toxic and cult like about Bjj

Gentleness in combat is only applicable when you have technical superiority over a physically weak/unmotivated opponent. I would argue that the average BJJer is taught *complacency* in positions that are only safe on a mat with a LOT of rules. Maybe it’s a language thing. ‘Accepting guard’ etc. in wrestling you are taught to dominate and improve position. They are just framed entirely different from the outset.

@TA-hf6si Год назад
Jiu Jitsu plays on the idea that there is a top and a bottom player whilst wrestling only have top position, from there it becomes a battle for dominance. Personally I like to train submission wrestling. Securing top position in order explode into a hold that allows me to strike in order to create a submission opening. I train all positions, but in my opinion this is where I feel most dominant and likely to win in a self defence situation. It's also a fantastic confidence booster :p Edit; My point here is that I agree with your statement. I just wanted to add some of my own thoughts on what you said :)

@@TA-hf6si Tbh, i think soon we will see the bjj "guard" die in combat sports as a whole. Laying on your back is a very VERY inferior position when your opponent can strike. Alot of ufc level fighters are incorporating wrestling scrambles over bjj guards now because theyre starting to realise theyre only good to get yourself beat to death in.

Not where I train.
@ericwalsh2954
@ericwalsh2954 Год назад
In training that happens because people mistake learning a position for it being a position you want to be in nessacerily, a good chunk of the bottom subs in bjj take you off the opponents pressure and put you to am angle for a reason

I just love it when you come across a mean, tough-as-nails badass like Josh Barnett and then see how extremely bright and articulate they are as well. A joy to watch both in the ring and on a podcast.

The last min... josh couldn't have explained that better. Mike tyson was terrified before fights self admittedly. He'd go in and knock the guy out in a min. He said... when I started thinking I was a God... thats when I lost.

Wrestling is all about balance. Good “hips” is the term. Once you have balance, you need technique and explosiveness

3:00 Kudos to Busaivar Saitiev. He taught me that nothing is impossible! I was just a kid wrestler when Saitiev beat Diatta at 2003 world championships with the score of 32 to 2. I turned to my dad and asked "I don't understand, wouldn't this be an automatic tech fall after 10 point difference?". Then I saw my father's face, and realized he was as dumbfounded as I was.
@samuelgardner5939
@samuelgardner5939 Год назад
I was at that match. The idea that Diatta scored on him was such an affront to Satiev that he requested the match continue. I'm not sure if that was even a rule then, but it was pretty darn cool. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CYucBcGRdho.html

So is jiujitsu, that's literally what a "submission" is. Then again, I consider jiujitsu wrestling too, so tomato tomato (that phrase doesn't work well unless you are speaking it).

Never too late to put yourself into something you enjoy and make an impact…..if you have told people in the 70’s that the Doobie brother/steely Dan guitarist “skunk Baxter” was going to be a respected US missile defense and intelligence consultant they’d probably have called ya nutz! I think fighters that were able to keep their faculties look at problem solving with extreme efficacy….good people to have peel back the onion for you

What about Abraham Lincoln as a wrestler. The guys in the early 1900s carnival wrestlers , beat the champ. The maxim when I wrestled was “ if it don’t hurt , it won’t work”.

It seems as though Josh thinks everyone who does martial arts is a sadist and/or psychopath. For what other reason would it be more 'honest' to brutalise your opponent as much as possible to win? Any sane person would favour technique with minimal brutality to win.
