Good evening folks, from Edinburgh in Scotland! Tonight I am catching the very famous Caledonian Sleeper "Lowlander" service through to London!
If you remember, on October 25 2021 a brand-new low-cost train operator called Lumo started running its trains between Edinburgh and London. So nowadays we've got no less than four different offers of train between the two capitals - and one of them is the night train, the Caledonian Sleeper.
Enjoy the video! :)

Great to hear. I would do a daytime service but it's good to hear the sleeper works well.

I have travelled the Sleeper a few times; to get the most out of it I would recommend the Deerstalker to Fort William. The journey is longer and the scenery at the Scottish end is stunning.

Absolutely! For this journey, I had to go back to London - but for a future journey, it's hard to say no!

There's 1 thing I just don't understand about the Caledonian sleeper. If you have a classic room or a standard seat you can't access the sleeper lounges at various stations where they have showers. But if you have a club or superior room which already has an en suite shower then you gain access to the sleeper lounge. Surely in the classic room or standard seat the 1st thing you would want when arriving at your destination would be a shower?
@s125ish
@s125ish 2 года назад
It’s a standard product. There is showers you can use for a charge
@trainlagged
@trainlagged 2 года назад
What doesn't make sense to me is that this depends, as I said, on the station. As far as I'm aware, some let you in only on Club tickets, some let you in on any sleeper ticket, and some let you in on all tickets. Very confusing!

@@trainlagged yes I am going on sleeper next week in classic from Euston. I thought you had lounge access, no biggy for me

@@trainlagged - It's partly because some of the First Class customer lounges which have shower facilities are managed by other Train Operating Companies (ie Avanti West Coast at London Euston) and Serco Group plc won't pay them to allow holders of Standard tickets (eg Classic cabins without an en suite toilet/shower) to have access. I've noticed this myself and thought it rather odd. It pays to check just who is allowed to use what, where, before you travel. I believe that some Caledonian Sleeper lounges allow passengers travelling in "Classic" sleeping compartments (which, of course, have a wash basin, soap and a towel) to enter on payment of a £5 supplement in order to use the showers. I know that holders of Caledonian Sleeper "Family" tickets can't use the free showers at London Euston!

My god that’s expensive! In iran i took a night train that was about 400+km cost about £7 at the time. You got soft drinks and snacks too! Crazy how expensive this is

To be fair, the price includes a room and so saves a hotel stay. Having said that, a planned trip we cancelled partly because of the pandemic was fortuitous given the appalling reviews of the service run by Serco and confirmed in factual reporting: flat wheels causing the service to terminate and passengers regardless of room type bundled onto coaches, non-functioning showers on countless services, etc. The GWR service to Penzance is far superior imho

You say that but they often slap a regular IET on it instead of the sleeper train which is a bit annoying

Thank your for the video. Night trains are nice, it makes me remember my student years, I was riding it every 2 weeks. Quality of the room is good, but the breakfast looks very small. At least one hot drink and something more to eat, like croissant. For the price, i’m not totally agree. Consider the price of the transport AND hotel accommodation, it will worth it.
@trainlagged
@trainlagged 2 года назад
Note that for the price, I found an absolute bargain. Note that prices are generally much higher than that on the Caledonian Sleeper. The breakfast in this class… yes it’s small but it does the trick - normally it’s just a drink and not even a snack. That being said you can purchase a good breakfast, and in higher classes of travel you’ll get it for free. Thanks for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed :)

I've done the night journey in s seat. Cheap but horrible and you're banned from the buffet car apart from takeaways. People board at Stafford. It's like a day train that doesn't stop much.
@trainlagged
@trainlagged 2 года назад
I haven't tried the seats on the Caledonian Sleeper, I'd like to do it one day to compare. Honestly the train doesn't actually stop in a lot of places especially on the Lowlander (on the Highlander, it's another story), so compared to other night trains I'd assume it's not so bad. The prices of the seats are attractive though, for sure!

As others have noted Cal Sleeper's selling point is the saving on a night's accommodation. If you need a daytime train its pays to take Lumo.

I used the service with my bike in Sept, I have used the service many times before and said to say it was a dreadful experience, one of which I don't wish to repeat. Its not what it was and is a far cry from OBB services operated in Europe.
@trainlagged
@trainlagged 2 года назад
It isn't what it was because Serco are mistaking this for a luxury service. It should not be one. It should be considered a regular passenger service, full stop, not as a five star hotel. New rolling stock shouldn't have been a reason to increase prices by such an extortionate amount - and a good refurbishment of the MkIIIs could have sufficed! I haven't tried with my bike yet, is that an easy experience ?

I live near ABN and hate the hassle of flights to London to visit pals. I could get a rail card...day train to Edinburgh to then overnight. I would want access to onboard shower though. Don't want to travel all aftn and night to turn up in a sweat fest state at London. Need to suss out fully the price options. I cannot sit upright or semi reclined all way to London so that isn't an option. Horizontal for the night is essential or I just suffer in a plane. I also can't walk far due to current medical issue...so airports are not good either.

@@trainlagged yes, that's a pity. I can do a wash in communal toilet area but that's not really my thing. I can fought it anywhere, camping or hostel, but I want the private facilities if paying so much for transport.
