I've just read about the Conquest of Damascus 634 and you can find very detailed reports about that- whileone historian compared all sources and came to the conclusion that all we know for sure is that the Gates were opened and the city was given over, so Siege and Battle could have happened but no prove for that. An this is only 1 event of hundreds during the arab expansion :)

Brill, Leiden/Boston 2010, ISBN 978-90-04-17684-3 But to get back to topic: the arab expansion in the beginning was more a political/ military campaign and there are not so many hints to that what we see as Islam in the 8th century. In the beginning they don't try to convert people to their religion, they don't use special emblems or symbols, coins still show the cross but a new M.H.M.T. writing. They don't build monuments, they don't have clerics and they don't teach the quran. John of Damascus (650~750) worked for Arab Administration, talks about a pseudo prophet mahmet and calls them Ishmaelites... you can google: John of Damascus - heresies of the Ishmaelites Conclusion: it seems that it took Islam 50 to 150 years to develop into that what we understand today, but that's just another guess :)

@Bj D Some errors could be because translation from syriac to arab. Others by missreading the text (bec. missing vowels and diacritical marks). There were almost no scolars in the 7th century, but more in the 8th and a flood of scolars in 9th century producing hadith, tafsir and other texts. I think at one point the quran (as written text) was widely spread and they couldn't change it no more.
Someone was telling me that an Armenian source names Umar. But I highly doubt it. It would be known by now in academic circles. It’s also very interesting that Byzantines were at war with the Arabs and yet there’re no mentions of anyone except Ali, who is considered a governor of Hira, not a caliph. Imagine Romans fighting the Jews and having no clue who the rebel leaders were.
None of the Rashidun caliphs were fictional, we have mentions of them in contemporary sources and they’re also mentioned in an archaeological record, for an example, the caliph Ali is mentioned in the Maronite chronicle which was written in the years between 658 and 664, we also have an autograph of umar ibn al khattab that dates back to his time in Al mukarab, this is a French archaeological study that proves this “Espaces de liberté et contraintes graphiques dans les graffiti du début de l’islam” the people who made this video are goofballs who have no idea about what they’re talking about.
I have to be honest here. For me as a Christian, I have to question the sincerity of Jay Smith and possibly Al-Fadi in examining and covering Islamic sources. I been trying to look and see if they addressed the early Quranic fragments that archaeologists found that can date all the way back to 7th century and from the Hejaz area such as the Birmingham manuscript. Sanaa manuscript and Topkapi manuscript are also dated around the 7th century as well during the time Muhammad lived. I don't see them talking about these three early Quranic fragments but trying to run a narrative that Islam has nothing in writing from the 7th century and from the Hejaz. Edit I apologize, I stand corrected both Jay Smith and Al-Fadi addressed the EArly Quranic Manuscripts that were found in 7th century AD via carbon dating.

The information is all over the place because we have to rely on non-Islamic sources. Chinese sources, for example, are extremely sketchy. What’s clear, though, is these guys definitely did NOT come from the same tribe. They were all over the place, probably not even Arabia. They believed all these different things. What about the letters sent allegedly by Mohammed in 628. Ive seen images of messed up paper with Arabic writing, or were those something else? Have those documents been tested or examined to at least make sure the text fits with the period? If they are real then who sent them if Mohammed isnt real?

There are more examples: like the Nasa moon landing was at 50:1 mission time and this is the verse that tells about splitting the moon. Someone put a lot of students to work to find some correlation between the quran and modern(!) knowlege so that people think this is somehow a miracle :( Quran is the most confusing text ever, how can someone think it's divine? I think that Mohamed did exist the same way Mosailama existed, however, he had no power. When the Arab rulers started to challenge the power of Byzantium they saw that they needed a state religion distinct from Christianity, so they took the teachings of an insignificant Arabic priest that had some followers, gave him a glorious history to show that the Arabs that will follow him will be victorious in battle to be able to rally their people into expansion wars.
