A review of the Cambridge Concord Wide Margin Reference Bible in black calf split leather (ISBN 9781107696013), KJ764:XM. (To see this Bible compared to the R.L. Allan 5WM, click here: • Concord vs Allan KJV W... .)
This King James Version (KJV) Bible contains only the 66 books of the Protestant canon. The text is laid out in two columns divided into verses. Page-ordered references and text and translation notes, six points in height, are located in the center column. The text is not cluttered with raised characters that indicate which words or phrases in the text each reference relates to. Their absence improves the readability of the text, but makes using the references more challenging.
The font in the text is 8.71 points in height (somewhat smaller than in the standard Concord, which has a 9.27 pt font).
The text block is sewn. This calf split edition has a paste-down construction with a coated paper liner. The pages lie open and flat in Genesis. The wide inner margin keeps the text on the flat portion of the page, far from the gutter.
The margins are as follows:
Top - 22 to 24 mm
Inner - as much as 33 mm
Outer - 33 to 34 mm
Bottom - 35 to 37 mm.
The paper is relatively opaque and nearly matte. The advertised paper weight is 38 gsm.
This KJV Bible includes both the Epistle Dedicatory and the Translators to the Readers. In the back of the volume, one finds a short glossary of terms that have changed meaning or fallen out of use since the KJV was first published, a lengthy concordance, blank pages that one can use to build an index to the notes he writes in the Bible, 64 lined pages for note taking (heavy paper), a map index, and fifteen color maps on non-glossy paper. The maps do not disappear into the gutter.
The Bible comes with two black, double satin ribbon markers, 6 mm wide and 33 to 24 cm long. Page edges are covered in gold. Head and tail bands are red and yellow.

This has been my workhorse Bible for 14 months now. I grabbed the Goat skin edition on sale for $215 and it’s been worth every penny. I love the center column reference, The paper is excellent for writing and the amount of room for extra notes in the back is unmatched in WM Bibles. Not to mention the crisp text which makes it easy to read. I am grabbing an RL Allen 5WM in a week or so because I have updated and refined my note taking system, but will always cherish this classic yet very durable Bible. Great review

I’m curious how good the glossary is in this edition. Does it cover a good majority of archaic words or terms and words we don’t use much anymore? Or is it just a small percentage?

Thank you for another great review. I’ve recently discovered your channel and I have since added many bibles and products you reviewed to my wishlist! Also, I wish either Cambridge or Allan would put out a wide margin or at least larger size KJV with apocrypha. I have the Cambridge cameo with apocrypha and love it, but can’t help but be slightly jealous of the beautiful 53 and 63 longprimers that I see others have, but I digress. Have a happy new year, and I can’t wait to watch more of your videos in the next year!

@@RGrantJonesHi from BC Canada. I thought I’d come back and let you know that based on your helpful review on this particular wide margin Bible I purchased one. The fact that you had more to say on the paper gsm was what sold me on it. That was my greatest concern. I have been needing a wide margin Bible and liked this one; the Cambridge Concord calfskin version. Thanks again for the video. 👍 -Jasen

I like the features of this Bible. Except for the lack of including the APocrypha (a serious flaw as I see things), it is ideal to use in study. However, If I want to take notes for the Apocrypha, it just is not there. Is there a particularly fine wide margin KJ.V. Bible that includes all of these features, or most of them, which includes the K.J.V.'s Apocrypha with the wide margins, centre references, and the text of the Apocrypha, one that makes up for an extraordinarily fineKJ.V. Bible in your eyes? If so, could you review such a K.J.V. Bible separately?

I notice in the KJV Cambridge Concord when referring to chapters in the center column reference, some show lowercase (ch.) and some show uppercase (Ch.) I can't seem to find an explanation for this.
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones Год назад
That's interesting. I hadn't noticed it before. Perhaps Ch. is capitalized after a period. That appears to be the case in Ruth 1.16 and 2.20. The note in the introductory material says that the period is used to separate references that apply to different parts of the same verse.

Hi Dr. Grant, I have both the standard and the wide margin Concord, I have noticed that the wide margin is va little smaller. If you had to pick one which would be your choice?
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones Год назад
The wide margin has thicker paper, so there's less ghosting, but the smaller font is more challenging on my old eyes. My standard Concord is edge-lined, so it doesn't open very flat. Even so, I prefer the standard Concord a bit.

Great eye! What's cool is the KJV has other accidents emoticons. Esther 2:12 has a pretty fittingly-placed wink. Also John 2:9 ".. but the servants which drew the water, they knew ;) " In Acts 10:36, you'll find a well-placed smiley. "The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ, (he is Lord of all:) " There's another smiley in Genesis 49:24. Those are a few I've taken note of the past couple years. There's definitely more tho. Anyway, I enjoy whenever I come across one...

I believe so, Malcolm. For instance, the text in the Cambridge Heritage KJV with the BCP is said to be 6 pt. The text here is more like 8.5 pt.

This is an odd question, but what's the "font size" of the "King James Version" text imprinted on the spine of the Cambridge Bibles, if you don't mind me asking? Specifically on the Concord and Cameo editions. After a long time thinking about it, I'm still undecided on whether I like the larger version name imprinting on Schuyler's Bibles (KJV, RSV, etc.) or the smaller, more subdued imprinting seen on Cambridge's Bibles (and many other publishers' Bibles, for sure). Do you have a particular aesthetic preference?
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones Год назад
'King James Version' is imprinted in a roughly 18 point font on the Concord Wide Margin. No, I have no preference. Thanks for commenting!

This layout is too dated for my tastes. If they're going to use Scrivener's edition of the translators' preface, then maybe they should take a few more cues from Scrivener and put the text in paragraphs. Speaking of his edition, do they follow his text in the Concord? Does Matthew 23.24 say "strain at" or "strain out" (Scrivener's emendation)? They do include the preface and the translators' notes, at the very least. Those things should come standard in a printing of the KJV. (I worry that publishers will start cutting footnotes out of the 20th century versions once they enter the public domain.)
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones Год назад
Thanks for commenting, M.A. Moreno. Mt 23.24 reads, 'strain at.'
