The Bible has lots of "ites" it talks about - Ammonites, Moabites, Edomites, and the Canaanites. The Biblical authors assume it's audience knows who these people were. But thousands of years removed from that original audience we sometimes need a bit of a refresher on who these people are. Understanding who the Canaanites were can help us better understand the biblical text and the Israelites - a people who shared much with the Canaantites - who produced the Hebrew Bible.

Yahvé is presented as a non-Canaanite God by the Hebrews.

Canaanites are definitely an ethnogroup as well as a people of Canaan. That’s why sometimes you see people listed in the land of Canaan by their names that denote they are not Canaanites. Example, Egyptians lived in Canaan and were called Egyptians aka Misraimites, the sons of Misraim. Canaanites are Canaanites regardless of where they live, like the Amorites who conquered Babylon were still Canaanites from the Amorite branch

Ham and, the extension of Ham, Canaan. Biblically, Canaan is Ham’s son. Regionally, Ham is Africa and Canaan is “Israel”. When you tie the “curse of ham” and the Hyksos time period, there may be some apparent bias by the author. *the Curse of Ham extended to his son Canaan.

*The Hyksos was forced out by Kamose and Ahmose I, could be the borrowed story of “Moses”. Google Ahmose I sister wife. Exodus is likely when the Hyksos got forced out. Now, gotta ask who were the Hyksos (one group or two groups working together)

It was the Akkadians and Amorites who mixed with the Canaanites not only the Amorites

It could be like people if ur inside america and some asks where your from you say texas ,florida, new york but when you leave your country ur gonna say american, so maybe some edomite or israelite inside of canaan (who yes have similar cultures and names) they might not back then see themselves as one, but to outsiders or even edomites and Israelites who lived abroad might use the term Canaanite when speaking with an Egyptian cause they wont know ( or i bet they didnt even identify with the sub culture but a tribe )

@WorldXl_ the only semites that were mixed with Canaanite people were the Akkadians and Amorites ( Imliq/ Amalekites/ Hyksos) . Canaanites by themselves were also not Semitic unless there was admixture. All that the Edomites/ Idumeans were was the Chaldeans. I my personal opinion I don't think everything in bible is accurate.

No the Kenites were considered descendants of Cain. In Genesis, Canaan was the son of Ham, who was cursed after the whole naked Noah episode.

@@ClayandPapyrusBingo. The “Curse of Ham” and extension of Ham (Canaan) should highlight the bias and entitlement written by the author of Genesis, “Moses”. There was a foreign rulership period, Hyksos, when “Moses” wrote the script that he “freed” slaves. If you were freed, you wouldn’t leave to a land that was “promised” (entitlement). You would flee when land was taken back, claim land that was occupied by ingenious people. Ham is Africa Canaan is Israel (now) Hence, the curse, the bias, and the entitlement. “Moses” probably also hid under that name because Kamose and Ahmose I are the brothers that took the land back from Foreign Rule. Ahmose-Nefertari (wiki) is Ahmose I’s sister-wife for an idea what I’m getting at. “Moses” very likely had a slave-wife which is why Abrahamic blood is tied to Aethiophia, Ethiopia, Kush.
