In this program we take a quick look at the history of the ancient land of Canaan and its inhabitants, the Canaanites. For most of us, they are the antagonists for the Israelites in the Old Testament of the Bible. However, their history and interactions with the peoples of the ancient Near East go back in time much further than this. If you don't know much about ancient Canaan and the Canaanites, this program is a great place to start.

Hey everyone, First off, thanks so much for stopping by. I’m thrilled that there are so many of you out there who love ancient history as much as I do. I was also pleasantly surprised at how many people tuned into this particular video. Thank you! I’ve been going through the comments and wanted to address a couple of things. One, please be respectful of others’ views and use appropriate language when commenting. I’m all for free speech but I won’t tolerate comments with excess profanity, bullying or bigotry. These things have no place here and will simply be deleted. Please be civil and respectful to all who wish to discuss on this platform. Second, some of you have brought up race and the “European” portrayal of Canaanites in the video. I completely understand. I’m actually from a historically persecuted minority that has often been misrepresented in mainstream culture and history. However, I took another look at the video and didn’t see what the concern was about other than perhaps in two paintings of scenes from the Old Testament. One is by the Hungarian painter József Molnár and the other a 17th century work by the Dutch artist Rembrandt. Those are just two painters I like whose work is also royalty-free. It had nothing to do with portraying Canaanites as European and that most certainly wasn’t my intention. If you know of any relevant and royalty-free images, please let me know and I’ll be more than happy to consider using them. When I put these videos together, I do my best to use as many credible sources as possible (if interested, I’ve listed the ones I referenced in the video description). While I use the Old Testament as a historical source, I also cross-reference it with what scholars have learned from archaeology and modern historical analysis. This is just the approach I use. Then, I do my best to present what is written in these sources and leave it for you to either make up your own mind or dig further by doing your own research. That’s all. I have no agenda or wish to espouse any particular view. You have no idea how great it is to receive a comment from someone who may not have known much about a particular subject and then have them write that they're even more curious and want to learn more. For me, that’s one of the most rewarding experiences. Thanks again for participating in this channel. It means the world to me and I’m really glad each and everyone of you is here. Now, let’s discuss some more history! - Cy

@UCn0XMDyG6eUuYQkn5g2KrbQ Hi. When I talk about Semitic, I am referring to the language family - Canaanites spoke a western Semitic language. I'm not talking about race or ethnicity. I probably should have made that more clear in the video. Thanks!

History with Cy The Canaanites were Semitic, both ethnically and linguistically, regardless of what the Biblical opinion is. The biblical narrative is based on making sure the enemies of the Israelites are not of the same “stock” as them, it’s full of this kind of bias. Ironically, historical research is proving that the ancient Hebrews were in fact Canaanites themselves, the whole story of coming from Ur of the Chaldees has no historical and and archeological backing, and Hebrew is in fact a Canaanite language, not an Aramaic based one like the religious narrative suggests. Anyways, if you want to get an estimation of how the Canaanites looked like just take a look at modern Palestinian and Lebanese people, a very Mediterranean look, pretty close to Greeks, Italians and Spaniards... Cheers

The language used at Ugarit is closely related to biblical Hebrew as well as to other ancient languages of the region including Phoenician, Aramaic, and Moabite. Like most documents in those languages, these Ugaritic texts were written almost entirely without vowels, as are modern Hebrew and Arabic. This can complicate translation, since a word with only consonants may, at least theoretically, have several possible meanings. Yet there is a compensating advantage for the translator of Ugaritic: the poetic techniques used by the ancient Canaanite authors have much in common with those employed in the Bible. As in biblical poetry, the chief formal characteristic of Canaanite verse is the use of parallelism, a characteristic not lost in translation. In parallelistic verse, a single idea is expressed in units of two or three lines (a bicolon or a tricolon) by repetition, synonyms, or antonyms, as we see in the following lines: Let me tell you, Prince Baal, let me repeat, Rider on the Clouds: Now, your enemy, Baal, now you will kill your enemy, now you will annihilate your foe. You will take your eternal kingship, your dominion forever and ever. These units consist of a tricolon framed by two bicola; each unit has one thought developed by repetitive and synonymous parallelism. Not only the technique but the lines themselves are familiar from the Bible: Behold, your enemies, Yahweh, behold, your enemies have perished, all evildoers have been scattered. (Psalm 92:9) Your kingdom is an eternal kingdom, your rule is forever and ever. (Psalm 145 :13)

The most famous Canaanite invention is the alphabet. The dye they made from a type of conch (Murex) was pretty famous too; the Greeks called them Phoenician, meaning 'gory'/'purple' while Canaanite/Kinani are Semitic terms meaning 'purple people'. They abandoned their languages to trade in Aramaic during the Assyrian Period, with only Punic in Carthage (Phoenician qrtḥdšt, "New City") surviving until the second century wars with Rome, and Hebrew surviving as a liturgical language (like Latin).

Hi! It appears to be my approach to the subject. I definitely acknowledge and use the Old Testament as mentioning Canaanites, but they are also featured in ancient Egyptian, Syrian (the Mari archives), Mitanni, Hittite and the texts and inscriptions of several other peoples of the ancient Mediterranean. These, along with archaeological findings, must also be taken into account which I think some people do not recognize. There are several who in the comments have made it clear that a literal reading of the Bible is the only way to view the subject and, well, you can see where the disagreement with the material in the video comes from. Anyway, I respect everyone’s opinion, just not the profanity, lack of respect for others and in a couple of cases, threats (hence why for the first time I’ve had to monitor comments to make sure they’re rated PG). On that note, thanks for stopping by and glad you got something out of it!

Hi! I said in the video that they are mentioned in the Bible as the descendants of Ham, but archaeologists/linguists/historians classify them as a Semitic-speaking people because their language, Canaanite, falls into the Semitic family of languages. I probably should have made these distinctions clearer in the video. Cheers!

@@americanparser There's an Insurmountable Difference between the Biblical/Hebrew-Jewish fiction mythical "canaanites" the Čhanaanim and The non Hebraic Prebiblical aka Gentile by background True Canaanites or Kananians. The first is the Hebrew-Jewish "canaanites" the Čhanaanim. They are descendents of Adam and god Yahweh from noah or noačh through ham or čham as he's rightly called originally. They are cursed and forgot about worshipping yahweh/yahuwah the hebraic god and make up new gods on the spot of yahweh. They have "immoral practices" idol worship, child sacrifice, temple prostitution (bet čhodesh), practice dark magic, and spoke Hebrew (like the example is in genesis/berashit ch 50 where yoshep mourns for yačhob his father with these unrelatable egyptians called mitsrayim and the canaanites say "abel mitsriyim" which is Hebrew language), as well as incorrectly in a land that the Jews/Hebrews in their fantasy land isn't theirs originally somehow clearly randomly, and finally they have all kinds of disgusting sex with everything in site like family to friends to animals to objects. All this to name a few false descriptions about canaanites in general real world view and others, this let alone all their "kings" melečhim are all bad. That's that on the Hebrew fiction mythos with bible/tanak on. Now to the real World Canaanites the True Canaanites aka Kananians. The Canaanites Really are Gentile origin not Jewish/Hebrew they are preadamitic thus again proof as gentile by definition and nature and more. They are Created by the True Gods the Original Real Elohyim (Iluma in their language as will be explained onward here) like El, Asherah, Baal-Hadad the Supreme baal unknown to the ancient hebrew-jews whom created their fiction and then later composed it into the bible books in post antiquity times of late iron age. They the True Canaanites are Semitic like the hebrews (thus should be shem related not čham even they both including japeth/yapet are semitic or Hebrew characters of jewish-hebrew fiction made up in post antiquity) and they instead in correction too and truth shown they birthed the Hebrews instead of the Hebrews birthing them and they helped created their hebraic god yahweh/yahuwah/Allah with their own Gods and the canaanites themselves over some time post bronze and through out low iron age. The True Canaanites never had any cities like "sodom and gomorah" or knew camels in the 1800-1200 bce era which is the earliest time the Hebrews say their Čhanaanim (canaanites) came too be. The True canaanites knew camels in the iron age early on like 900 bce when the first real Hebrew jews ever came too exist their first kings like David and Solomon who in Truth we're half Canaanite and small Jerusalem rulers who were even able to sit on the low throwns of broken down canaanite lands on Jerusalem of the time since 900 bce Jerusalem was small and shrunk from lack of commerical trade and defense from the local Kananians and long past egyptian rulers who helped build up it especially when king abdi hepa ruled his city jerusalem. The canaanites in the real world have many pious virtues and taboo sins they condemned like rape, child sacrifice, misusage of slaves, temple desecration, and corrupt Kingship too name a few. Real Canaanites used idol statues for God Worship not worship of the object itself but the God/s themselves behind it's symbolic representation and it's semi dwelling place for the Deity. True Canaanites spoke their actual language which is the direct and indirect father/mother to both Hebrew and arabic. As stated in the last paragraph the canaanites would've instead say 'Ablu Misrami' or 'Ablu Misru'. Plus also they called themselves Kana'ani or Kinanu or Kana'ana. Those are pure and better along with their word for holy (unlike Hebrew čhodesh) is Kudushu or Qadishti. And lastly kings were to rule Rightly and Godly and not sinfully or corrupt as many kings in the world and others were supposed to conduct themselves with piety and even watched over by a high priest or prophet (Canaanite: Nabu vs Nav :Hebrew). Etc etc Other things to point out with Truth and Light is that magic use was not to be dark magic or occult like related. That was Hatta to the Canaanites/Kananians and the Gods. Magic was used to worship and glorify the Divine Ones (Qadishumi Aliyanu translated Most High Holiness). The Kananian Gods have no chosen people or acclaimed bloodline choice; the covenants made by them with lesser beings like humans is the individual person's choice to follow and worship that God/Goddess/Deity. In true God Given Real world the Levantine lands of Kanania like ancient Israel/Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and tinsy tinny tip of north west Saudi Arabia and Sinai was fought in war in early iron age too bronze age back and into real Hebrew time like late mid to late iron age forward by the True Canaanites the Kananians in fact Hebrew-Jews biblically and non at the same time practiced Canaanite customs and contrary to the tanak/bible it was Godly Tsaddečh (Hebrew for righteous coming from the parent canaanite language word for righteous Tizaddiku). All in all in conclusion it's clear as stated at the start, the Hebrew-jewish (Aka biblical/Hebraic fiction mythos fantasy) "canaanites"? The Čhanaanim (whom are nothing more but the Hebrews themselves) are nothing alike and purely alienated to the True Canaanites the Kinanu or Kana'ani who are real and more than just existed but left endless traces of themselves like the Mesopotamians (Real True Babylonians/Assyrians unlike the Hebrew Jewish fiction of post antiquity also the Ashurim and Babelim among the čhetim the Hebrew fiction "hittites" who like the "Philistines" Hebrew palashetim whom both are semitic hebrew like and in the land that is not Palestine ancient related or even time periods correct. More on another time.) Hebrew Čhanaanim vs True Gentile present Canaanites aka Kananians. The first is all a Lie and godless deception of Devils. The other is the real World God/s (Iluhimu Aliyani) Truth Forever (Ulami). There you go my Kananian friends, and I hope you guys enjoyed this very long post. Shalamu Li Kumu Qadishu Kinaani Ulamu. Stargarden- The Phoenicians and the Canaanites were one and the same. The “Phoenicians” of the Bronze and Iron Age are called “Canaanites”; the Canaanites of the archaic and classical periods are called “Phoenician”. The first ethnonym (Kanaanim) is of west Semitic origin (even though the groups of peoples we now collectively call “Canaanites” had a variety of endonyms for themselves). “Phoenician” is an exonym- the name given to the ancient coastal Levantines by the Greeks (Phoinikes, i.e. the “Red People”) likely because the Greeks associated them with the manufacture and trade of the famous “Tyrian” red-purple cloth (the ‘royal purple’) which was so prized in antiquity. Much more to be said, but essentially that’s it in a nutshell. 🥜

An article by A. F. Rainey in The Biblical Archaeologist (1965, p. 105) states that on ethnic, political, and, probably, linguistic bases “it is now clearly a misnomer to call Ugarit a ‘Canaanite’ city.” He gives further evidence to show that “Ugarit and the land of Canaan were separate and distinct political entities.”
@HistorywithCy

@@JasonJacksonJames Yes I believe you're correct about it generally not being considered by many as part of Biblical Canaan, but Ugarit did have a flourishing Canaanite community and culture. From what I've been reading (and my studies are still incomplete), it was quite a cosmopolitan city with many different groups - not just Canaanites but Hurrians, evidence of Luwian-speakers and of course your traders from Egypt, other parts of the Mediterranean and Mesopotamia. Seems like Ugarit was a cool place to be!

I enjoyed your short video, but I’d like to let you know that I am a Canaanite from Lebanon. The Greeks changed our name to the Phoenicians because of the purple dye we manufactured for the wealthy kings, made from the giant sea snails. We were the first to write the alphabet, then the Greeks took it and tweeked it. We were the seafaring people of the Mediterranean. No one could duplicate our Phoenician ships until the Punic wars that were fought with Italy. They sunk our ships, retreated them from the ocean and duplicated them. Italy was afraid of us because the Phoenicians started a civilization in Carthage, the top of Africa, opposite Italy. The Carthaginians also are the Phoenicians. We the Lebanese traded with the whole of the Mediterranean. Cypress, Greece,Italy,Spain,Malta, even as far as England and Ireland. The first miracle Jesus performed was in Lebanon at a canannite wedding. King Ahab’s wife was jezabel a Phoenician women. Tyre and Sidon are mentioned in the Bible and still exist today in Lebanon. The first temple that Solomon built was made from the cedar trees from the cedars of Lebanon. Unless you are born and raised in Lebanon and went to school and learnt the history of our great country you would not know these things as well as many other things which would take too long to mention. The Canannites have the biggest megalithics in the world in Baalbek. Most of the foods and vegetables you see in the Mediterranean countries were introduced by the Phoenicians. The Lebanese have migrated to all parts of the world because of the many wars it has endured. There are many in America, Australia and also in Brazil. The Canaanites are the Lebanese people. Salma Hayek’s father is Lebanese. Shakira’s father is Lebanese. The famous super model Gigi hadid’s father is Lebanese. Omar sharif is Lebanese, he’s not Egyptian. I could go on and on. God bless you my brother with the great videos your putting out there

Hi, and thanks for stopping by the channel! Thanks also for the info! Yes, I tend to call the Phoenicians "coastal Canaanites" and agree with you that it's a Greek term that has been adopted in European languages. I will be doing a video on the "Phoenicians" soon where I'll do my best to explain all of this. It will also focus a lot on the various Phoenician city-states and kingdoms and their interaction with the rest of the Mediterranean and the world. Stay tuned and once again, thanks for stopping by!

Interesting. There are an African(nigerian and nigerien) ethnic group called the hausas. Their oral origin story says that they are desendants of Canaan and that they moved from there to egypt. There they mixed with the copts. Then they moved down to sudan then to chad due to the drought. All the way to what is now hausa land. There are so many linguistic and cultural similarities. Whites called them hamites. They have a beautiful architecture and they use alot of geometric designs and knots that sort of seem similar to Celtic art. I think their story corresponds to this. A little.

There's no doubt that the Phoenicians were Canaanites. From Wikipedia: In the 6th century BC, Hecataeus of Miletus affirms that Phoenicia was formerly called χνα, a name that Philo of Byblos subsequently adopted into his mythology as his eponym for the Phoenicians: "Khna who was afterwards called Phoinix".

I enjoy your programs, a lot! Would like to make a comment for you to consider in your chronology. I Kings 6:1 should read 1,480 years. It was a transcribing error. Plug it in and watch the results. It backs up some of your biblical content up to, as much as 1000 years BUT will help make sense of the a lot things and harmonize the chronologies of Egypt, Persia, Assyria, including the Canaanites and the Philistines with the Bible. The later two had a very long lasting presence. Thus, Noah's flood was in the year 3519 BC, Abraham was Born in 3226 BC, the seven year drought with Joseph was 2879-2872 BC, Gen 45:6 Joseph/Zaphenath-paneah/Imhotep vizier under Djoser, the wealthiest Pharaoh of all Egyptian Pharaoh's of all three kingdom periods. The first stair stepped pyramid was built for Djoser. The Exodus was in 2447 BC. The Royal House of Egypt then floated down the Nile, into the Mediterranean and settled on Crete (Atlantis - Island of Atlas, one of many names for Nimrod and his Royal House) and became the Sea People. It was devastated (not completely destroyed , not much more than 900 years (not 9000 years) before Plato, by the eruption of a volcano in the south-central Aegean Sea that sent a Tsunami on this Island. The Surviving Royal House first attempted to take the Delta Nile (home) and didn't succeed and raided the shore's of the Mediterranean finally returning back to Babel about 1600 years after the fall of the tower and established Babylon, that over powered Assyria and eventually took Judah in 586 BC destroying Solomon's Temple. From reading some of the comments below, I will add: Zeus was Cush, son of Ham, son of Noah. Cush's younger son was Thor, Nimrod. Appreciate your work.

Islam didn't exist until after Mohamed's birth. The Arab's didn't really have a serious presence in Canaan until after the Romans evicted many of Jews/ Israelites after their rebellion against the empire. In both instances we're talking about events that happened after the area known as Canaan had been known as the kingdoms of Judea, Israel and Phoenicia.

I love looking at these history videos. I have always been curious. The bible talks about Abraham coming from Ur of Chaldeans, stopping at Haran before entering caanan. I heard many make claims about a more closer period connected to Abraham, with many claiming UR was near black sea. I have also seen that the True UR was close to Haran which would make more sense. The mention of the people in caanan dont seem to fit the UR Near Iran people groups. If i am not mistaken when Lot was taken captive it was 5 kings from the north who punished a rebellion of tribute from 5 kings in the South. Yet i havent found any documentry of all rulers near Hettites area, upper Harran - Nineveh area, levant area that ruled over the land of caanan. This was well before Israelite History. From Abraham to Jacob it seems the travel through Haran through cannan back to Harran area was common. Damascus was well known and Abraham seem quite familiar with it. Sodom was destroyed. The last big personality that seems to be spoken of in caanan in Abrahams time was Amorites. Yet how did Hettites come to also be mentioned. If it was UR (Edessa/Urfa) near Haran ( also close to Ancient cities) that Abraham came from to harran then onto caanan, and a group of Northern Kings (Antolia region) were ruling over caanan, can we find these Rulers in History. I always get the impression caanan had no one rule it outside caanan until Egypt, so am struggling to work out how 5 egypy kings(south) Fight against 4 kings in caanan. Also wondering out of curiosity does egypt record the Kings of Sodom, Gomorrah etc..

Well I agree with your statement that Ammorites meant Westerners or people residing west of Euphrates or across beyond that river i.e. Eber Nahri as called by Sumerians and Akkadians and by themselves as worshippers of God Ammurru . But I disagree them being a different nation from Canaanites . Infact people of the Levant i.e. Near East or Sham as descendants of Sam n not Ham ( other than his son Arphaxad the forefather of both Arabs n Israelites) , that comprises Syria Lebanon Palestine and Jordan . They all are Ammorites n called 'Lowlanders' dwelling along the whole coast from Gaza to Cilicia as Kinnanu or Canaanites or by Greeks as Phoenicians and 'Highlanders' of plateaus hills and mountains as Arameans n not Syriacs as misnamed by both Greeks n Romans in reference to that land being under control and part of Assyria of Mesopotamia , whereas those who dwelt the desert of Syria kept the name of Ammorites . They also are the proto- Babylonians that built the city of Babel n formed part of Babylonian monarchy including last era where they were named the Chaldeans having believed in astronomy n worshipped the Sun n Moon . And yes they too are the Hyksos who ruled Egypt from the time of Abraham to Joseph.

1457 Egypt won the army of Syrian, Canaanite and other Mitanni forces in the battle of Megiddo. In Hebrew mountain is har, so does Har Megiddo sound familiar? It's a mountain watching over a plain that looks like flattened for a four lane highway, the plain of Jizreel. North of it start the mountains of Galilee, south of Har Megiddo is the rest of the central hill country, the highlands where the Amorites, Jebusites etc. lived. To go north or south if not by the coast, that's the only place to do it, going east or west, especially with wagons, or tanks. And the coast road is tough, because there's the mount Karmel jutting out to the Mediterranean. Tough one to circle around it, if some folks want to be on the mountain throwing rocks on the road. Harmageddon is derived from that Hebrew Har Megiddo; sounds like a Greek derivation. This Egyptian battle is therefore quite prophetic. Many battles have been fought in that valley, plain - and the final one will be fought there too.
