In the final lecture, Dr. Petrusek examines progressivism’s problem with evading hypocrisy and how it undermines freedom of speech. We’ll then conclude with the Catholic response both to these problems and to the overarching issue that bedevils the entire progressive-wokeist enterprise: the idolatry of group identity.

A wonderful series of lectures. I have always been uncomfortable with Progressivism but had trouble articulating exactly why. Dr. Petrusek did a wonderful job of giving me those reasons and explaining why Catholic social though tradiction offer stands counter to them. Thanks to you and to Word on Fire.

I've definitely been a progressive ally, but this series was illuminating. It articulated the distortions in the ideology-- that I never even realized were an ideology-- with a more holistic understanding of what's objectively and universally true. This was fascinating. I took 12 pages of hand-written notes. Thank you!

Wow! I am grateful for the discussions and exhortations of the class. I think the classes is a creative critique of identity politics and posts a challenge to each one - on how we can resolve the catastrophe, identity politics is bringing humanity. This is our time, this is our era in salvation history! Our challenge is... how do we get to the era of Peace? Identity politics is clearly careening to an era of chaos and destruction of this generation.

The classes probably are short to help and call the attention of the listeners of the crisis we are all careening into unless we do something. Second, I observe people who stumbled upon the classes are high class philosophers who can think things through and hopefully will answer to the challenge and are aware of the crisis we are facing...destruction of the very core of man and the stealing of the great inheritance given to his family at the moment of his existence.

I've watched this series to the end and have tried to give it a fair chance. I appreciate the attempt and I know it is not easy to write a series of short lectures. Overall, however, I found the series very disappointing. Perhaps it was due to the length of the videos but I felt lots of the arguments were just taken as given rather than proven. It almost felt that there was some sleight of hand in this video as it moved from hypocrisy (acknowledged as a feature of all politics) to nihilism without much proof. I know philosphical discussions are valuable but perhaps a series that started by championing the value of Catholic Social Teaching would work better - this might be a better way of appealing to those involved in progressive politics because of their interests in justice and fairness?

I strongly concur, Joseph. I share your disappointment. There is certainly material to steel man the opposition's argument (which did not happen as you mentioned) and proceed from there with a cogent defense of Catholic social teaching.

I would like to add in order to be fair to Dr. Petrusek in the face of the many criticism that I have put on these videos, that I have seen his recent article on promoting 'Dignity, Equality, and Solidarity' instead of 'Diversity, Equity and Inclusion'. I am not sure if this is the answer or not but it does seem like an attempt to put forward a more positive vision and it would be really interesting to have some videos or further articles on these ideas at some point. Thanks

Joseph, I think the classes are the presentation of the problems we are facing rather than a full blown philosophical discussion of the dangers of the "idolatry of identity", a.k.a. wokeism. The Catholic Social Teaching is the answer to the problems facing us...as the great leaders of philosophical and theological applied studies of our era like Wojtyla, Ratzinger and Bergoglio wrote, instructed and encouraged each one. I decided to write their last names with respect as they are great philosophers in their own right. I can vividly remember the older documents like "Rerum Novarum", "Lumen Gentium"... I was at Grade 6, when I started reading them...and one of my favorite was "Pacem in Terris". I was reading them with my friends while we were at break time and after playing sports! I think even my British, Italian and American school friends appreciated them too. Here are some great titles which I think many will appreciate.... Fides et Ratio Deus Caritas Est Caritas in Veritate Laudato Si Amoris Laetitia... etcetera The challenge facing us - is how to stop the careening destruction caused by the Identity of Idolatry...aiming at the Divine inheritance of the reason of our existence. So, I have to think how I will get into attending a full blown classes of Dr. Petrusek with so much loads of work... I think I will have to make time.

I enjoyed this series. It was very informative and I agree with the main points. The “wokeness” has gotten out of control. I would caution, however, not to over generalize or presuppose the thinking or rationale of any group, including progressives. I don’t agree with them overall but some points they say can hold water. For example, saying “All lives matter” can be racist if it is being used to combat the message that black lives matter, even if saying all lives matter is not inherently racist and actually true. For a comparison sakes, let’s suppose police supporters started a major Blue Lives Matter campaign in wake of police killed in the line of duty and ex-cons and criminals began a campaign to refute them called Criminal Lives Matter. It is inherently true that criminals’ lives do matter (all lives do, and have human dignity), but this slogan is being weaponized against Blue Lives Matter. With words and language, context and intent must always be examined.

As a big supporter of Word on Fire's books, videos, and Bishop Barron's homilies/talks, I watched this series and kept wondering: "WHO is this for?" While the speaker did point out a few times that he was critiquing the ideology of progressivism and not necessarily it's well-intentioned adherents, the overall tone was just... mean. My take-away was that this series will only serve to either further entrench the morally superior worldview of a conservative or alienate a liberal already suspicious/hostile towards Catholicism - not foster healthy, charitable argument. I agree with some of the other disappointed comments here, and would much rather have seen a series on Catholic social teaching or a mature debate on these topics. Instead, we got one-sided caricatures and smugness. If we claim to be Christians, we must do better and not litter the cultural landscape with stumbling blocks. There may well have been some truth here, but I did not hear it spoken in love. 1 Corinthians 13:1-2 (St Paul, pray for us!)
