Vatican II was the twenty-first ecumenical council and produced sixteen documents: four Constitutions, nine Decrees, and three Declarations.
In this lecture, you’ll receive background information on the Second Vatican Council in particular and on ecumenical councils in general. Dr. Richard DeClue, the Cardinal Henri de Lubac Fellow of Theology at the Word on Fire Institute, guides you through the documents and puts to bed the common misconception regarding whether Catholics have a choice in assenting to Vatican II.
What constitutes an ecumenical council? An ecumenical council is an extremely rare occurrence, a “solemn” exercise of episcopal power (CCC 884).

The Vatican 2 documents explained : Without understanding the following you will never be able to understand the documents. I will list here, what the documents consist of, by name and by title. But you will never find the list of these names inside the documents this is deliberate. For the purpose of concealment. Not the fake phony Third Secret that John Paul II falsified and Rewritten, along with the fake Lucia !!! But the real true Third Secret of Fatima. You are also to do what the Blessed Virgin Mary told us to do at La Salette, France and again at Our Lady of Good Success, who described in great detail what is to happen to the Catholic church at the end of the 20th century and she was 100% right !!! What do we do then ? what did she say to do ? She said, to say the Traditional Rosary, not the rosary of John Paul II, the Traditional Rosary !! 15 decades, everyday or 5 decades on Monday, 5 decades on Tuesday, and 5 decades, on Wednesday. So good! I needed this. I've repented from listening to anti-evangelists like Taylor Marshall who are leading Catholics away from trust in the Counsel, the Pope and our church hierarchy. Listening to him nearly destroyed my faith. I'm so happy WOF is addressing this and pray that it sets both the progressives and the rad trads straight!

Thanks for sharing this video out. I am a baby Catholic baptized April this year, and in my family background I should be the first one to officially have faith. (also thank so much to my parents especially my dad though a science teacher, he always encouraged me to discover and to explore. He supported me a lot when I am alone in the US and decided to step into Catholicism) Born in a communist country it is very hard to really meet people with faith and the discovery road was always alone for me. Thankfully, Christ brought me to Him years ago through some severe disease that happened to me. Through twisted (I spent over one year with Protestants and Protestant Church. Before getting baptized I said this to my Protestant friends, 'I am emotionally read but rationally, not ready. I want to see something else' then I went to the campus Catholic Chapel), Recently, I have been spending time researching the topic of SSPX. Because I have a Catholic friend I care much about her. Vatican II, absolutely, is the crucial part. Some part of Christ living within me is giving me sorrowful feelings about the brokenness of people or communities fighting each other to prove their superiority. It is hard, for a baby Catholic, to judge what is right and what is wrong. Thus, constantly I have to pray to God for His mercy and wisdom in opening my mind. Thus, I was recommended by the campus ministry for this video (he knows I am struggling on this topic). And I do want to say thank you much for introducing Vatican II in an elaborating way. I have my personal thoughts about hierarchy, traditions, etc. But, in the end, what matters most is Christ's opinions. I won't stop walking with Christ in my life, and I will take all the struggle and sorrow with me for the rest of my life. Thank you so much, stranger netizens, for your time reading my story. What is dialogue ? In order to have dialogue and unity, from dialogue !!! What does dialogue mean ? It's a new religion, it means an unfounded, fallacy, that, there is “some good, a little good” in all religions ! The Vatican 2 church then takes that fallacy, and cleverly,linking it to “Grace” (actual, not sanctifying grace) then they go from Grace to Holy Spirit and then from Holy Spirit to Spiritual Treasures (elements) that are found in every single religion on earth. Since it's divine grace from heaven from the Holy Ghost, we are to embrace it and bring it into our faith, and our church, and our sacraments !!! But here's the catch, you are not allowed to convert them, But to esteem and respect them and their religion.We are to bring them into our Mass and worship, along with their own instruments of worship. That is the purpose of “dialogue” to discover that - little bit of good - that's in every religion, label it “grace” and then Label it the Holy Spirit and then it becomes Spiritual Treasures that every religion in the world has from the Holy Ghost !!! that's it !!! that's what dialogue is all about. As a fervent One World religion Novus Ordo extremist, I would try to persuade you otherwise, that you are wrong, but like you said, the post-Vatican 2 Anti-Popes told me not to convert anyone or dialog with Traditionalists, including you!!! Sucks bro. Looks like we are at a stalemate. I am particularly interested to see your take on how Lumen Gentium’s take on the possibility of salvation for non-Catholics is in continuity with tradition. I’ll hear people say that before the 19th century, no one thought that. I know that it has roots in Augustine, but I wanted to see about other theologians, such as ones in the medieval era or around the era of Trent.

I love V2. The idea that there is a real backlash against V2 is a myth. What people are truly opposed to is the new liturgy. I see the continuity in v2 and see why liturgical reform was necessary. Where I see the rupture has nothing to do with the documents of V2 but with the liturgical reform implemented after V2. Why did the implementation go so far off script and away from what the actual liturgical reform document (sacrosanctum concilium) prescribed and outlined?

There have been, and continue to be, problems, in too many parishes, with the *interpretation and implementation* of the documents of Vatican II. Beyond this reality though, which I accept and have personally experienced, with respect, the fact that you don't *personally see* a "real backlash against V2," itself, doesn't mean that it's not happening. Some of the most popular and widely-watched voices in Catholic media today are *actually, openly, challenging the legitimacy of Vatican II* as a Council of the Church which we, as Catholics, are bound to accept. Taylor Marshall, Timothy Gordon, and other popular Catholic RU-vid presences have been openly challenging Vatican II as *an actual, legitimate Council of the Church* , for some time now-- in fact, for years, at this point. I don't recommend spending much time, if any, at their channels. I have done so in the past, and I have seen them gradually go down a more and more dangerous road. They claim to be faithful Catholics, representing "true Catholicism," but too much of what they are offering, on their RU-vid channels, is openly anti-Papal, near-schismatic, poison to the Catholic soul.

I just hate that they have become the face of the TLM movement… when it’s really bigger than that, it’s grassroots and it’s people like Shia who just stumbled upon the beautiful traditional liturgy. It sucks that us who want beauty and reverence restored are pushed into the fringe and forced to find common-cause and fall in with these poisonous radtrad Internet circles. If the mainstream church proudly embraced the TLM movement and allowed open-discussion I think you’d see a positive improvement and less people falling into the radtrad ghetto. The mainstream church and companies like WoF could play that leading role of rehabilitating the TLM movement and steering them away from sectarian extremism. With all their talk on the evangelistic power of beauty and their preaching against “beige Catholicism” you would think this could be a match made in heaven. But instead they ignore and prefer to keep the TLM lovers away in the shadows.

@@Rome_77 My friend, I hear your frustration. I've seen (endured) some terrible abuses of the liturgy in my years in the Church. However, the Pope has spoken, for now, on the Latin Mass. We must listen to him and respect his decision on the matter. It's still celebrated, in some parishes, including in my Diocese, but for now, the Pope has *limited* celebrations of the TLM, and he had valid reasons to do so. The fact is, he remained silent, for years, on the radical voices in the TLM movement, such as Taylor Marshall and others, as they became more and more extreme and gained wider audiences in the Church. Pope Francis allowed and facilitated the celebration of the TLM for years, but tragically, things have reached the point where very vocal voices in Catholic media and elsewhere are using the TLM to foment an openly anti-Papal, anti-Vatican II, near-schismatic mindset. It has reached the point that this mindset has even become the *majority view* in too many parishes. *That* is, to a great degree, what Pope Francis was addressing with "Traditionis Custodes." My friend, I know it's painful and difficult, but you're not being "pushed to the fringe" unless you *allow yourself* to go there. The fact that voices like Taylor Marshall have been opposing Pope Francis as the legitimate Vicar of Christ for the Church, and, increasingly, opposing Vatican II, for *years* now, has pushed the Pope's hand on the TLM movement. Again, he allowed, and facilitated, its celebration for most of his Papacy. However, the poisonous, anti-Papal, Ordinary Form-denigrating, Vatican II-bashing, near-schismatic attitudes of *too many people in the TLM movement* forced his hand. To be sure, many people in the TLM movement *don't* have these radical views-- but many (and more and more, all the time) *do* hold these views and spread them to others. This reality had to be addressed, and the Pope did so. It was tragic but necessary.

@@Rome_77 To answer your question, I think that "Traditionis Custodes" may well (indeed, perhaps, it already has) further cement(ed) the *more extreme* people in the TLM movement in their extreme views. Again, though, these more extreme people, among whom there are *very vocal voices* in Catholic media, have already been holding, and spreading, anti-Papal, Ordinary Form-denigrating, Vatican II-bashing views *for years* at this point. These views have spread to *so many people* in the Church that even certain Catholic leaders whom I, and others, once trusted and considered to be heroes of the Faith, have, themselves, become spreaders of near-schismatic poison. If Pope Francis didn't address this issue when he did, then a future Pope would have had to do so, and the problem would have likely been even much worse then-- maybe, to the point of an actual schism.

The subject of Vatican II has bothered me for around 28 years now. I have grappled with it extensively. Until one day I realised how to explain what bothers me about it using the logical concepts of genus and species. Without getting into the historical background, inner workings and doctrinal details of the Vatican II documents and rather relying on what most Catholics know about it, the following analogy I think is most revealing: Aristotle says that the natural way of learning and coming to know things is from the generic to the more specific. Just as when we see something moving in the distance we first identify it as a body and then as it moves closer an animal and even closer a man and finally as this particular person; Socrates. Now it needs to be understood that there is a difference between our knowledge of a thing and the thing itself. Furthermore if someone were to give the definition of the species of a thing instead of giving the definition of the genus of that thing one would give a more precise and fuller account of the thing. In other words, the more specific our knowledge becomes of something the closer our knowledge resembles the thing, the truer our knowledge is. (Truer, in the sense of having more truth. Adeguatio res et intellectus) This is the natural way man comes to know. To try to move in the opposite direction is unnatural and against human nature. To try to forget what one already KNOWS about something in order to know it more generically is an act of violence against oneself. It would entail force that goes against one's own nature. Using an analogy this would be like a seasoned cavalier who has known horses his whole life attempting to not consider a horse anymore as a horse but rather as an unspecified animal. Now what is more generic and less specific is more universal. Whereas as what is more specific is more exclusive, in the sense that an essential difference is added to the genus in order to define the species. This sets it apart from other species. In the same way when one says the word animal it can apply to many things. Whereas, when one says man it excludes many things and applies to just one type of animal. Now, things that exist in reality ARE NOT generic they are specific. The Church founded by Our Lord is a real existing reality. It is something specific with its own essential elements and properties. A specific account of the Church includes more essential elements than a generic one. The Councils, pronouncements and doctrines throughout the ages became more and more specific. The Church's awareness of itself approached more and more the reality of its own being. It is impossible to move in the other direction. In other words it is impossible to move from a specific knowledge to a more general confused knowledge. A generic knowledge of anything is always more confused than a specific one, just as knowing something only in so far as it is an animal is more confused than knowing it specifically. Instead, our knowledge specifies as we gain acquaintance and experience of a thing. One may object that the Apostles or early Christians had a very clear and specific knowledge of the Church. This is true. However the Church's formulated doctrine was not as specific. Throughout the centuries this doctrine became better formulated and more specific. This was necessary especially to rule out heresy and error. A more generic knowledge on the other hand leaves out essential elements since it can never define as well and as close to reality as a specific account can. Take for instance the treasure of Dogmas the Church has and considering for instance the doctrine of Transubstantiation or the Immaculate Conception. These are very well defined truths of our faith. To try and forget about them and return to a more generic explanation would, at this point in time, leave out essential elements. One may ask, why say "at this point in time" would entail leaving out essential elements? Its necessary to say "at this point in time" since one could object and say that the early Church's catechising was not as formulated as it was post Council of Trent, yet we cannot say that the Church left out essential elements in its teaching at that time. This is true and that is the point. When heresies attacked the faith of the Church, as what happened with Luther's idea of the Real Presence during mass, the older formulation of what happens during the consecration was no longer specific enough. Therefore the Church better and more specifically defined this miracle using the concept of transubstantiation. Any teaching now on the Real Presence which left out the concept of transubstantiation would at this point in time leave out what has become essential elements. Unless we would pretend that the threat of heretical interpretations no longer persists and a generic account would immediately render a correct understanding. However we know this is not the case. Now, in order for Vatican II to be less divisive, open to non Catholics and ALSO IN ORDER FOR THERE TO BE CONSENSUS AMONGST THE COUNCIL FATHERS, THE COUNCIL HAD TO REVERSE THE NATURAL PROCEDURE AND PROCLAIM SOMETHING MORE GENERIC THAN PREVIOUS COUNCILS. Now, one could argue that the council taught no error. Entering into this debate is not easy and not for the most of us. However knowing that the council purposefully decided to be less specific and more generic is known by all of us. Can we say that a generic knowledge of a thing is deficient compared to a fuller specific knowledge of a thing? Trying to go against oneself and forget what one once knew or defined creates the impression that one must have been wrong once upon a time. Because why else would one try to forget or forget to mention what one once knew or defined? How many people do we know who have used Vatican II to look back and interpret older Councils? Anything more specific than the Council is frowned upon as superfluous and outdated. But does truth age? Never the less can we blame them for acquiring this habit when this is a natural consequence of artificially regressing and not progressing in knowledge? Of trying to be less specific and more generic? Furthermore, there is a prevalent assumption amongst "post conciliar" Catholics that Vatican II attempted to strip Catholicism of whatever is non essential. But, this leads to a contradiction since to hold this view would be to believe that a specific account is less essential than a generic account. This is the same as saying that the definition of man as rational animal is less essential than defining him as an animal. I would therefore like to ask: Why do we think Vatican II is supposed to be a type of update of Catholicism or a type of refocusing of the Church on what is really essential? Did the Council Fathers intentionally want to be less specific for the sake of truth or was this a consequence of trying to find consensus both internally and with the outside world? Was the Church's self awareness and identity diminished on account of this?

I’m a Catholic in Central Europe, and I haven’t seen this division. We attend the same churches that we have for hundreds of years, some sing a little more in Latin, others don’t. It depends on what the mass is celebrating. From my perspective this looks like a very American or at least Anglosphere problem, and seems more closely linked to cultural sentiment. Am I wrong in this interpretation? Is it more widespread and I haven’t happened to notice it? I would appreciate any enlightenment on the matter.

I stand with the Church that the Mass in English or native tongue is a valid Mass. It’s just heartbreaking to see such division on the barely understood Vatican ll teachings.

Leslie, I want to try to answer your questions and address your concerns here. I hear those concerns, so please know that it is my desire to try to help you with some background information which will hopefully give some context to these terms which sound divisive to you. These terms are actually rooted in debates within the Church which have been happening for several decades now, since Vatican II itself, and Word On Fire is attempting to clarify some questions for Catholics who may be curious, or confused, or skeptical. Since the late 1960s, and even more so, in recent years, these debates have been becoming more and more contentious within the Church, and too many well-meaning Catholics have been misled, some even to the point of leaving the Church, or joining schismatic groups which claim that they are faithfully Catholic, but are actually not in continuity with the genuine, legitimate, Sacred Tradition of the Church, as it is articulated in the Catholic Catechism. The fact that Bishop Barron and Word On Fire are now speaking up, and speaking out, on these debates, which have been happening for decades in the Church, is a measure of *just how serious* things have become. The last several Popes have actually publicly spoken and written on these matters too, but too many Catholics still were tragically misled by other voices-- sometimes, even, voices within the Church, but voices which have been openly opposing official teachings of the post-Vatican II Popes, in various ways. I apologize profusely for the length of this comment, but I'm attempting to give background context here, to help you understand what what these terms mean ("radical traditionalists" and "in continuity with tradition"), as the terms are being used here, and *why* they are being used here. Thank you so much for your patience with my lengthy comment. These are matters of some history and complexity, so they really can't be answered well, with the necessary context, in a few sentences, or even a short RU-vid comment. It would actually probably take *a book* to fully answer your questions, but I'm trying to at least keep my comment shorter than a book, so thank you for bearing with me here. 🙂 Generally speaking, in this video series (and in other videos that I have seen from Bishop Barron and Word On Fire), the term, "radical traditionalists," is referring to Catholics who are creating division in the Church, themselves, by strongly criticizing Vatican II and its documents, and, sometimes, by opposing the Ordinary Form of the Mass, and opposing various, official, Magisterial, Papal teachings, *wherever* the "radical traditionalists" believe that these teachings are, somehow, not faithfully Catholic. This is *radical* traditionalism, as opposed to being "in continuity with tradition," because Vatican II and its documents, and the official, Magisteral teachings of the Popes since Vatican II, are all parts of the *genuine, legitimate, Sacred Tradition of the Church* . Catholics who want to hold fast to the true Sacred Tradition of the Church need to accept Vatican II and its documents, and not spread views which tempt and mislead other Catholics to move in directions which claim to be "faithfully Catholic," but are, actually, are *at odds with* the teaching Magisterium of the Church. The Catechism teaches that it is the Pope, and the Bishops who are teaching in communion with him, who are the *authoritative interpreters* of Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition for the Church. This teaching is very important, because too often, many of the '"radical traditionalists" claim to accept this official teaching of the Church, at least in theory, but too often, in practice, they actually oppose it. I do understand that these terms of "radical traditionalism" and "in continuity with tradition," sound divisive. However, it is an unfortunate, and tragic, fact that some very vocal Catholics, such as the late priest, Fr. Marcel Lefebvre, and more recently, the RU-vid commentators, Taylor Marshall, Timothy Gordon, and others, have *freely chosen to put themselves out there* as Catholic commentators who are *openly opposing* Vatican II (and other Papal, Magisterial teachings), and all of the Popes since Vatican II, including Pope Francis, as the current, legitimate, Pope of the Catholic Church. I don't know if you're familiar with Taylor Marshall, and other Catholics who hold and spread his views, but he, and certain other "radical traditionalists," have large audiences on RU-vid, and they are, tragically, leading well-meaning Catholics into holding very radical views which are actually at odds with the visible, living, teaching Magisterium of the Church. It is not divisive to use the term "radical traditionalists" for Catholics like Taylor Marshall, Timothy Gordon, and others who hold their views, because these near-schismatic Catholics, have, themselves, been fomenting division in the Church for too many years, and leading well-meaning Catholics down increasingly dangerous roads. Again, I apologize for the length of this comment. I hope that it has been helpful in answering your questions and addressing your concerns.

Okay towards the end of this first lecture in the series the speaker says the Bishop stands against progressives and radical traditionalists. Why didn’t he label progressives as radical progressive and traditionalists just traditionalists? I think I can guess but please explain the bias. Also he should define these terms so we have reference points to understand what he’s talking about. I hope one of his talks will contrast the spirit of Vat-2 vs the fruits of Vat-2.

I think we would do well to acknowledge that V2 was, in one way at least, a significant break from the past that (Dr. DeClue denies this at 19:30). I am specifically referring to the V2 document on religious liberty Dignitatis Humanae. DH was a watershed moment for the Church and I wholeheartedly embrace it (and I suspect most red blooded Americans do) - but it certainly doesn't play well with Pope Leo XIII's Immortale Dei or Pope Gregory XVI's Mirari Vos. We've got to be forthcoming about this, as it causes schismatic traditionalists to view us as either dishonest or ignorant of our shared history. Regardless, I'm grateful for this thorough presentation and I look forward to the rest of it.

Michael Dunnigan also did a licentiate and doctoral dissertation on DH (he’s a canon lawyer). He takes a different approach on DH than Prof. Pink, but still he doesn’t think it’s a rupture in teaching. I believe he has a book coming out (or recently released) on it. I look forward to reading it when I get a chance. I’ll be interested to see if I agree with him or Pink more. But again, neither think it’s actually a doctrinal rupture. So there’s definitely good work being done on this thorny and complex issue.

The First Council of Nicaea in 325 was call by Emperor Constantine I, and presided over by him. Constantine wanted to preserve civil peace and stability, and the conflict within the church led to discord, and riots. Constantine wanted to bring peace to the Empire by having bishops resolve their theological differences. Constantine paid the travel and lodging expenses of the various bishops who attended, as well as the hall where the Council was held. Constantine opened the Council by giving the first address to the assembled bishops. The pope, Sylvester I, did not attend, although he sent legates.

Very sad and exclusive to be invited to “listen” and “observe” only. Understand why people chose not to attend. If there are no avenues for constructive feedback or discourse, what is the point?

That's an easy one to answer; in reality - it was, once, a very, very long time ago, before many of us were even born, an ecumenical Council of the Church called way back then .. specifically .. just to address the perceived pastoral needs and opportunities of those now historical times. It is, today, made into a bit of a touch-stone of All (acceptable) Authority for our own Times: not a Council among many, but The Council (of all Councils), or nearly as bad, it is a mere shibboleth .. pronouncing it with a hiss of disapproval - as if to cast off the source of all (current) evil. Is it still an important Council, or was it ever really all that important in the timeless spread of the Church? .. I suspect, Yes, on both counts; the former to show how Councils of the Church should not be handled, and the latter to understand how the Church actually works across time, with Magisterial Authority (from Christ - to teach all He commanded - with us to the Last Days). I trust that the Faithful, especially Tradition-loving Catholics (not least Radical Traditionists) will take the time to study this decidedly odd Council, its texts and contexts, critically, and not just the patently horrific fruits of the spirit of autodestruction that accompanied it (and informed how it was implemented). Alas, I fear many of our senior pastors will not be as pleased with the results of these studies as they may have hoped .. because those texts were a great deal too Traditional in their witness to the Faith to be valuable now - for any further progress on the great unfolding bridge-builder journey of accompaniment to .. somewhere (or other .. so long as it isn't actually 'back' to those long-gone days of vibrant and challenging faith). Keep the Faith; tell the truth, shame the devil, and let the demons shriek. God bless. ;o)

It’s just a historical fact: Pope St. John XXIII, a former professor of Church History, was inspired by St. Charles Borromeo’s implementations of Trent in John XXIII’s home diocese of Bergamo. The publication of the final volume of his decades-long project on that topic was published the same year he called for the Council.

Did the church need a renewal? Don't think so. It's pretty much Anglican at this point and in 30 years will be truly Anglican with female priests, etc.
