Honestly, one of the biggest and most common challenges of growing up in the 21st century is isolation, despite living in an era of globalization.

As a child I was more into books and nature. I used to watch over ants drinking sweet syrup and their belly swells up , it was amusing to watch. Riding on elephant whenever it comes to our street (by the way am from India), lots of traveling. The only television channel we watched was Discovery channel and animal planet. It was an amazing and exciting childhood. But everything changed and slowed down as I grew up. Now that I have a child, i want her to explore everything. Happy new year.. Happy exploring🎉🎉🎉🎉

I absolutely love your videos, they’re so cinematic and inspiring. I’ve been having a hard time on the 21th century with the constant barrage of mindless dopamine on the internet and you are an incredibly grounding force. You’ve inspired me to start reading and living philosophy and make some serious changes in my life, one of which will be a long break from the internet. I’ll be missing you the most while I’m gone but I know that thousands more will see your channel and make the world a little bit brighter.

1) Isolation is a huge issue, we are so connected but at a superficial level. 2) In our society it seems not to be okay anymore to aspire to be normal, average. You cannot say you want to be a housewife, retail worker or an admin dispute the majority of us doing those roles everyday. Perhaps we need to ask what is enough? 3) Too much information, for someone analytical it is hard to handle and I regularly have to take breaks. We only sip from the fire hose. 4) We don’t have our own views anymore. The majority of people seem to repeat a talking point from their favourite commentator rather than reflecting on their own experiences and arriving at an original viewpoint. I think this might be to do with not allowing ourselves to have empty moments in our days. Radio on, social media up, tv on, podcasts whilst walking, emails pinging. How often are we really present and alone with our own thoughts?
@State-Of-Mind
@State-Of-Mind 6 месяцев назад
Those are some really good additions. The part about aspiring for normal resonates with me. It's definitely an American thing to need to strive for something greater than what's around you. It's harder to achieve equanimity without feeling like you ought to be after more. I appreciate you!

I think the biggest challenge is the amount of opportunities and that the older generations think that it s a good thing. I struggled so much with finding out what I want to do for living, quit two studies, finished one but didn't want to work like that and now being 25 decided to get a kite instructor By the way thank you of giving me/ us another perspective of how live can be and that it is possible to not study, not work in the conventional way...
@State-Of-Mind

Yeah that's very true, I've heard it said that we have a "partial continuous attention" towards everything. Reorienting yourself is very admirable. And thank you sm

Awesome video dude! Such steep problems so heavily present in my life and most of my friends. Haha, everyday I am closer to quitting my job. It has almost been a funny joke at the sangha I go to, how everyone ends up quitting their tech job eventually. For me personally growing up in the 21st century has showed me that with total freedom, with the ability to pursue any skills or accolades, relationships are unsurpassable in the value it brings to my life, and the journey is all there is. As a striver, I have always tried to to take things to the bitter end as fast as possible. And with the internet I have been able to do it pretty well yet that has shown me that the destinations are just there to give you a direction, getting there isn't the goal since there is no where to get to. The moment to moment present is it, this is it. I think growing up in the 21st century helped arrive at that wisdom faster. Haha, my dad liked to day "Samek, you are always trying to take things to the end, take things to its DEATH, slow down you're young enjoy the journey. We are all already going to the final destination, speeding things up isn't going to make things any better." Most of the things I do now is catered around that idea, trying to enjoy every present moment with everything I do. I focus on connection, friendship, family, loving kindness for even strangers as I go about my day to day. In the things I am doing even if it is just a job just for sustenance I like to say "If you aren't enjoy the process, you're doing something wrong." Haha I have seen shortform and blinkest advertised quite a few times. I'll give it a try, hope the support helps :)

ay I love that man! wish I could be there for the conversations in your sangha haha. You're right that within any society acting upon the present is still all there is. It always fascinates me taking practices from thousands of years ago and holding it up next to our current modern lives. Also thanks I appreciate it!

Growing up in the 21st century... Nowadays, every piece of modern human knowledge is at the touch of a key or the tap of a screen. But with that freedom of knowledge, comes the abuse of that freedom. While mis- and disinformation is nothing new, this... bastardization of pure knowledge is so easy and fruitful that anyone with the correct mindset can easily overpower a research institute or control the people of entire continents with a click of that same button. Historical academics and futurists believed that humanity would reach a utopia of abundance and global peace, instead we've gone the complete opposite direction. But I believe we can still get there, but we as a species just need to "wake up." We need to learn how to look past the misinformation and dig deeper for ourselves. Become archaeologists of that "Pure Knowledge" and learn how to preserve it and make it equal for *everyone*.

You're wise to cite Weber's prescience and to highlight how corporations commoditize individuals at the expense of social connection. I humbly offer some counterarguments to ponder. Technological development has *always* influenced culture. One could argue that the *pace* of development and its proportional influence increase dramatically during revolutions such as the one through which we're living, but the fact remains that technology constantly evolves. Is the Internet's impact qualitatively different than... The advent of mechanization that accompanied the steam engine? Global communication enabled by telephony and radio? The massive increase in energy density that petroleum refinement provided? The shock of globalization that occurred due to post-war transportation advances? Ubiquitous computing that resulted from semiconductor miniaturization? The Green Revolution? Modern medicine? Plastics? Satellites? Trade-offs accompanied every one of them. Consider that living standards are better than at any time in human history. Lifespans are longer. Wars are fewer and peace more pervasive. Almost every child survives infancy. Cherish the reality that now is the safest and healthiest time to be alive, despite how it seems subjectively. However... Climate disruption is a catastrophe, as are the collapse of biodiversity and the detrimental effects of pollution. Nuclear war is forever a threat. Population is orders of magnitude beyond the planet's carrying capacity. We risk depleting resources necessary to support stable society. Artificial general intelligence could accelerate beyond our ability to control it. All of these are existential threats. Taking these factors into account, can you really argue that your generation is unique? Convince me, Charlie. Your work amazes and inspires me. I look forward to philosophizing with you during my next visit. :) (This rant is supported in part by the Coalition For The Advancement Of Cockroaches. They'll eagerly endure human extinction.)

One problem that I can think (this does not pertain to religion or belief) of is the subjective meaning of good and bad under natural law. People seem to accept bad as good as modernity in the 21st century unfolds.
