This is one of the most interesting shows I’ve ever watched in my little 31 years. It’s so dope and scary in a way no show/movie has ever been “scary” before. The scary part turned into a feeling of understanding for potential magic happening throughout the show and it’s taken me to a different realm of reality that is almost strong enough to hold its shape outside of the show 😂. If that makes any sense.
Hey dude, I've been watching your channel for awhile now and I have to say, thank you so much for all the research and hard work you put into your videos.
Man! Your eagle eye is truly impressive, you clock so much stuff I would never have noticed and your knowledge of mythology is so illuminating, especially for a show like this. Really looking forward to the rest of this series and your perceptive analysis. Thanks, keep it up!
Am from Uganda, king (Kabaka) Apollo bloodline still rules to this day. I know the family won't cause trouble but they have grounds to sue these movie producers but as soon as the people from this tribe find out about this, very serious online trolling henceforth 😢😢😢😢 Ugandans, we are very peaceful but don't play with our culture and customs
Apollo has a twin sister, not brother. Leto is Apollo’s mother. Calliope is the muse of epic and eloquent poetry, which was one of Appolo’s spheres of influence.
I’m really surprised at the amount of people who don’t know that black people can be born with blue eyes and blonde hair.. like in real life.. maybe it due to the lack of knowledge of Africa studies.. but anyway, I don’t think the witch having one blue eye and blonde hair has anything to do with Emma and Apollo being mixed raced…
True me and my child mom has a son and we are both brown skin and mad a light skin boy and yes it’s mine by dna my side of the family makes light skin or damn near white children
Yep. They were born on the isle of Delos. Artemis is the twin sister of Apollo, Athena's half-sister and daughter of Zeus and Leto. Calliope was his lover, not his mother

Yeah, Greek mythology is ALL over this. I find it interesting that Emma's friend that went to dinner with her and Apollo, and told Apollo what she probably wouldn't want him to know, was wearing white. From Greek mythology: Apollo's divine white crow, which had the ability to speak, informed him of Coronis/Emma's wrongdoings
Twin sister Artemis not brother, love your content but that just irked me. She’s a maiden goddess and that’s very crucial to her identity as a Greek goddess.
@@myloriv😂 exactly and there is one of the most famous myth when she had her children killed a woman who claimed that her children are more better than the Greek god and goddesses because she had more than one
@@TheKickass85 actually, Niobe had 14 children and claimed that she was better than Leto, who only had two. So Leto called up the twins and told them to punish Niobe, which they did by killing all 14 of the children. Niobe's husband then killed himself and she turned into a rock.
I am ecstatic to see that you are doing a “Changeling Explained” series! I watched all of your “Silo Explained” vids and came to enjoy them almost to the same degree as watching the episodes themselves. For Silo, I would note my conclusions to see how closely they matched your recaps, and it really gave the show extra layers and depth that made each new episode increasingly enjoyable to watch. I watched all three episodes of “Changeling” back-to-back, and thought, “Meh, this is a pretty decent show.” It wasn’t until I got to the 4th episode, where one character makes an off-hand remark, that I thought, “Oh holy shirt. I think this dude is _____.” But I have no friends watching the show and no one to discuss my theories with. I thought to myself, “I wonder if ThinkStory is doing an ‘Explained’” and, lo and behold, you ARE! I really appreciate your careful attention to detail, and some level of research must go into this, (as no one can know the history of every last name to know that a surname, for example, ties back to Dutch.) Many instances I would probably look up for myself, for instance, an overview of the God Apollo, but handily, you do the legwork for me. Ha! Another example is that the monster/entity is clearly visible in the waves, but I would have never taken the time, myself, to slow down the episode. I really cannot wait to watch your Recap of Ep4, but I actually stopped in the middle of the episode to check RU-vid for your series. Apologies to fangirl out, but credit where credit is due. Also, not required, but I think your voice is both soothing and also mysterious, like a narrator who leads his audience into the dark and stormy woods of the story. Appreciate your work and your recaps! Best in the biz, for sure! (Have liked and subscribed under a different account.)
5:13 The fairies of the poem were not taking children away to protect them. That line of the poem was meant to come off in a beguiling way. The fairies were deceptive to the children and gave them a false sense of security so that they would come away with them.
The original of the line, WB Yeats, wrote it as a goodbye to the child he lost. The fairies he refers to are Irish fairiies. Neither good nor bad, just mischievous. However in his poem, Come Away Oh Human Child, it is meant that the fairies are guiding the child away from the human world of pain and suffering. It's a comfort to a parent that their child joins nature via the fairies.
we are not talking about Yeats' personal attachment to the poem, nor are we analyzing and breaking down metaphors and other devices. In the poem, the fairies are not "guiding" the child away, they are luring. They describe a better place in order to tempt the child to come away with them, promising him a life of joy and freedom away from the human world, away from his home and family. The show references the poem because the whole point of it is that the fairies are luring the child away. Due to the mischievous nature of fairies, the image of them luring a child away can be haunting. Fairies aren't seen as simply mischievous in the show, which is why it is said that a baby is a dream but dreams are the fairies' favorite meal, to give us the idea that they may have ill intentions. You need to look at it from the perspective of how it relates to the show, not just putting all your focus on the poem.
In my opinion, I don't think that the novel handles it well when it comes to the transition from them thinking they're going crazy to them accepting the truth of what's really happening. Hopefully, the show will have a better transition from one to the other.
I'm so glad you're following this! I still have yet to fully grasp what we're watching here. Is it supernatural? Some sort of underground conspiracy? Or are we just simply watching two people go insane? The biggest WTF came from the last couple scenes in the third episode - starting with the group meeting in the church. Everything in that scene and the scenes that followed just seemed wrong. -Is this supposed to be the same group from earlier in the episode, "The Survivors"? It had the same leader and some of the same attendees? They started talking about how they found out about the group through a message board and how they were all members or fans. It kind of seemed to parallel The Mothers / The Wise Ones -Then there's the lady who's story was the same as Emma's - exactly the same. Except it seems like her baby and husband are still alive. Which begs the question, what is she doing in a survivors support group? -Then there's the guy who wants to buy the book. Why would Patrice tell him to go meet Apollo at the support group of all places? Especially since Patrice is the one with the book? Then he just so happens to record the meeting cause it's a "silly habit". Then he is able to find "the wise ones" from some book. Yeah, i'm sure it's probably in 1000s of books that contain "wise ones". To me, it seems like this is more of a story about two people going through psychosis. First with Emma, and now with Apollo.
Great observation it is about folklore witches and also the mind body and soul so yes your correct ! And the last scene episode 3 was all over the place I don’t understand the meeting did seem to switch maybe we are seeing two parallel versions of the same thing happening to both parents 🤷🏾♂️
I think the 3rd wish she made could have been fame, or to never be forgotten. People keep saying they know who he is after the attack. She will never be forgotten as the woman who killed her child.
I think she maybe wished to become a witch herself and that’s after the string got cut she slowly turned into one/or the older witch took over her body
@@evil_32k90I think it’ll be revealed that she already comes from a “witch/fae bloodline.” Apollo too. I’m reading the book but I’m only at the part where Emma has Apollo chained up.
I am rewatching the first few episodes. In episode 2 I realized something crazy: every view we see of Baby Brian is a different looking baby. I am talking about the scene leading up to Apollo meeting Patrice at the house with the books. I took screen grabs and sure enough different babies.
Thank god you are following this show, I was immediately drawn in by the performances and it’s pace. Looking forward to more of your breakdowns on the show.
Solomon islands, there native people are dark skin people with blonde hair. There's also genetic stuff that allows black women to have kids that look anyway regardless of if the child is mixed or not.
I keep wondering if he himself is the changeling. That he's forgotten - and that they want him back now. But he has to come to them, they can't just take him. I definitely agree, the name Apollo has to mean something. Even if it's just to point out how in mythology something bad generally happened to the mortals and nymphs Apollo fell in love with.

This is hands down the best review on this show I’ve seen yet !!! Excellent!!! So much detail I was amazed. I’m going to watch all 3 episodes again. Is it me or is the score of this show absolutely outstanding? I didn’t notice Emma disappearing as she went through the gate at the airport but did notice Apollo’s surprised reaction. When the story states that the fairies are taking the children to spare them the sufferings of the world, it doesn’t exclude them killing/eating the kids, as they could consider that death as a mercy.
Also, you might want to go to Celtic Lore, English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh and I do know about comparative religions , the big three and other more Earth based religion that are considered Pagan. The Three Mothers are important because it shows the progression from adolescents (Maiden), to adulthood and child bearing (Mother) and the old woman who represents knowledge that comes from wisdom and would be the one who people went to for advise or if they were in need of medical services. The Druids were healers and the women were the first physicians in the world. There was no evil and it is not satanism at all. The Fairy Circle you are not suppose to cross or step into, people believe this today. So, I'm not sure what you are trying to say because the Three Mothers or The Wise Ones were generally often times women who the tribes would go to for a number of things, she is basically the first Shaman, so I've heard from many indigenous people have stated so to me. Dude, you really need to get familiar with different types of people an why they believe what they believe. .

Anyone from Norway could correct me if I'm mistaken but I'm guessing you have similar bortbyting folklore that we do in Sweden. That a troll has swapped one of their kids for a human child. And what's the English translation of bortbyting? That's right, Changeling.

I think that the Old Washerwoman is not just any old witch, but is supposed to be equivalent to the bean-nighe from Scottish folklore. I think some variations of the bean-nighe folklore say that the spirit is often found by streams and pools of water and is able to grant wishes and foresee death.
@@edelgyn2699 Well, the bean-nighe is a spirit, but we don't really have confirmation that she is a bean-nighe in the show, aside from them calling her "Old Washerwoman" in the credits. Whether she's a witch or just a spirit, her character is influenced by the folklore.
The quote on the train billboard is lyrics from Superstition by Stevie Wonder. “When you believe in things, you don’t understand then you suffer” ….Superstition ain’t the way.
I loved the the first 3 episodes! I even started reading the book! I read some reviews from critics that got to see the episodes early and they were all so negative, one saying it’s a poor adaptation of the book, when it is literally word for word and the visuals are just what you would picture while reading the book so I’m so glad I watched and I can’t wait to see/read what happens!
I did the same thing I watch some critics on RU-vid that didn't understand the show, there was only person that I found on this platform that actually enjoy the show.
Yes! I was so impressed by the show that I started reading the book and it is almost word for word following the source material. And what’s crazy to me is some critics reviews made a lot negative comments before the show premiere like “it’s muddled”, “hard to follow” “if you can keep watching the show”, “a poor adaptation of the book”. I’m so glad I didn’t let that deter me. I can’t wait to finish the show and the book!
This show is an adaptation of The Changeling by Victor LaValle - not the movie The Changling (which is a phenomenal, and underrated horror film as well) with the exceptional George C. Scott. 😊
Apollo had a TWIN SISTER, thats a girl. Artemis or Artemisa!!!!! Born to Leto, who was a crazy b*tch.. And was with Zeus before Hera. When born, their mother only cares for Apollo and abandoned Artemis. Artemis, was goddess of Night, the huntress... Goddess of the Women Hunters... Amazonians are women hunters, and who went to the Amazon???? You guessed it, EMMA. This fits Emma's, backstory. It could be that Emma,,, Artemis (Ema is in the name...) OMG Emma could be his sister, Also, Zeus would often come in secret as a bird, or disguised as animals, to visit his children. And he was always in good favor with his kids, but for some reason would let Hera, his wife, torment the women he slept and had kids with. Hera, his wife also had a habit of killing his kids and sometimes... failing. Like in Hercules' case. Also, this is similar to American Gods. If you like this show... you will like that one too.
I feel like Apollo's mom is a witch/practitioner regardless if she's "Cal". When she and her siblings were back in Africa, they were singing an obeah song (THE SAME SONG that played at Emma & Apollo's wedding). And she acted weird when Apollo said something about his recurring nightmare too. The secrets/lies about his father are so suspicious. *Is it just me or does anyone notice that Brian (the baby) changes throughout these episodes?* Like, his skintone is sometimes light/dark. Looks like he's been switched. The library theme gives me an Akashic record vibe too. The Orixa/psychic was my favorite part! I love how the director implemented a different perspective on that diner scene.
I think Apollo’s mom is definitely a witch. And the baby being switched is also likely but I didn’t catch that myself. I gotta go back and watch scenes with the baby progressively. This show is really cool thanks for your comment 💯
Black people across the diaspora have different color eyes and hair. I understand that there seems to be a lot of biracial relationships going on, but I don't think there is any connection with the witch from Episode 1.
(I have not read the book) A changing in mythology I a fey creature that is left in place of a human child. There is Scandinavian folklore about this being a troll. The grandma wanted Apollos kid baptized so that the trolls could not replace the baby?
Maybe! His mother knows WAY more than she is saying. But yes, a change my name is a fairy Child and it’s when in Human baby is changed/swapped with a fairy baby. The mystery is, WHO is the changling
I am biracial. I always think American films cannot deal with biracial children very well. In American films, biracial children are always born black. Which I have never seen in real life 😂. In the UK, it’s a different story; biracial is what it is. Also black people in parts of Papua New Guinea and Australian aboriginals often naturally have the combination of dark skin and blonde hair. Change lanes are often said to have two different eye colours (one for each parent), much like the washer woman
@@Saffron-sugar That is NOT what the mystery is. The first 3 episodes already tell us what we suspect. The mystery has yet to reveal itself in later episodes.
@@Saffron-sugarI’ve seen plenty biracial people looking more black so what’s the issue? I think they did a great job at not focusing on the color of the people instead they are focusing on the story
I thought Apollo and Artemis' mother was Leto (Latonia in Roman) Edit: Just looked it up. Calliope is Apollo's consort Edit 2: Looking a little further, Calliope was the leader of the muses and birthed Orpheus. Apollo slept with all nine muses. Are there eight women sitting in the circle when Cal comes up?
@@Saffron-sugar😂what kills me her name, Artemis is a female sounding name he comes up with this brother of Apollo, and Apollo did have Brothers but they was not Artemis his twin sister
Great breakdown! I just want to know what’s up with the guy that ran after Apollo at the end? He’s in his Survivors session and happens to want to buy the book Patrice is selling??
Well it will probably be explained in the next episodes, don't forget he had some gripping issue he attended to on his mobile phone during the session - probably Patrice confirming acceptance of the purchase.
My theory...Brian the baby is definitely a changeling clues everywhere from the books claiming babies are dream creations, to the characters saying its not a baby and biggest hint the mom constantly claiming the baby does not feel like hers like its someone else's baby big hint the baby was switched or clearly not truly hers or a normal baby.... the creepy guy taking the video just gives off creepy vibes won't be surprised if his afetr the witches or members of the wise ones as some of revenge or something🤷♂🤷♂
Wow, you're really good at this. I thought I was paying full attention to the show but I missed everything that you've pointed out, and I forgot all about the ship from the beginning. Lol. Smh
I've always looked out to your reviews for new shows to watch. However, not enjoying this one so far. I like mystery and intrigue, but this one is just all over the place for me at the moment.
Just curious, I haven’t seen anyone mention the couple of times the camera made the world tilt upside down. Anyone have a theory on the significance of that?
alright, watched your review, or better yet thoughts about it and things u noticed. u are actually insain the amount of details i missed. are truly amazing the whole water monster, the ripples moving in to the city. all of that i missed. so good!
Fairies are not taking children to protect them. Every folklore and story (based on experiences) in different cultures about fairies, talks about their dark nature too. I am german and in Goethes famous poem "Der Erlkönig", a father tries to save his young son from fairies/elves who wanna take him for pleasure. There are some interpretations of that poem that try to dumb it down and make it about going through puberty because they wanted to erase the spiritual aspect of it.
It's hard to watch this from the moment you said Apollo has a twin "brother." Do you do any research for this? Might wanna try that but thanks for letting me know this show exists I guess.
The Brazilian washer woman reminds me of the Scottish washer woman, Bean-nighe. The Bean-nighe is a female spirit in Scottish folklore, regarded as an omen of death and a messenger from the Otherworld.
This is the first time I am hearing Artemis being referred to as male. She's one of the three virgin goddesses. She's the goddess of the hunt and maybe midwifery?
Blue eyes and blonde hair are genetic mutations, and so they exist among Black people, just way less. I think there are some small ethnic groups in Africa and some indigenous people in Asia who naturally have blue eyes and blonde hair.
I love your videos. However as a mythology buff I suggest you do more research before saying the wrong things. First "Twin Brother of Apollo" Then mistaking Apollo's Muse for his mother. Like we know this is scripted, maybe fact check before you record cause this isn't the first time I've hear you say mythology wrong.
Norway and Portugal had agreements during the slave trade in the 1500s, frequently bringing Africans to Brazil. Maybe all the water imagery is related to the Middle Passage, the horrors of the world, the water essentially saving children and protecting them from enslavement. Def fascinating symbolism here.
Great review. I worry that they will do the thing where too many plot points over stuff the real story. I don't want to waste so much time trying to decipher what's pertinent and what's frivolous. I'm okay with the storytelling, but I want it all to actually mean something. Keep up the great work, my friend! 🤟🏿 😁👍🏿
As someone who is a huge movie nerd, one of the best true to form representation of changelings and what happens according to the traditional folk tales is best adapted into the excellent horror film, The Hallow. Less than 10 years old & one of the best indie horror movies of the last decade, I highly recommend giving it a watch. Loving this show so far!
