The winter of 1909 had been severe and the worst to hit East Lancashire for over twenty-six years since the last one that had brought neighbouring towns and villages to an entire standstill, and by March - Charles Lane had become almost impassable for horse drawn carts which struggled due to the steep incline when approaching the center of Haslingden.
The icy conditions along with a decent amount of snow had, throughout the day, brought dozens of local residents to the area who were all eager to enjoy the inclement weather.
And its in this environment a tragedy would soon unravel, leaving the residents of Haslingden shocked and disillusioned.

Many thanks DM! I didnt quite get enough footage due to 3 files being corrupted on the memory card, not sure what happened to be honest. Thus the reason for using the podcast as a voice over in some places.

Hi Janine, many thanks for getting in touch here and to be honest, I dont or didnt have the names of the cycling group members but its interesting to hear that Havelock is part of them! This is what always blows my mind when researching these stories, the fact that something like this, the photo and how Havelock is on it, and I didnt even know! So thanks for getting in touch and revealing this. May I ask, which one is Havelock? I know its hard to probably describe with there being quite a few members.

@@DaysofHorror hi, not had it verified but family members agree that it’s him. We think he is on the second row third person in on the right side of the trophy

Thanks for replying and I'll take a look later this evening. It would be an amazing find if it could be verified and something I could send you a link to for the photograph if you don't already have it. If I remember, I'm sure I came across it on the Haslingden Blog Spot website.

Charles Lane has something about it which I love. It's like it's hardly changed over the years and the history all around that area is brilliant.
