The Chevy Bolt still remains one of the best electric vehicles here in 2021, and is the only all-electric vehicle that's offered my GM (at the time of filming this) and it's a great alternative to a Tesla! This is a 2017 Chevy Bolt that I was able to buy used with 30,000 miles, and this is walkthrough with my thoughts about using this car here in 2021.

I've driven my 2019 Premier for almost 4 years now (including four Canadian winters) and am still in love with it. The best car in my entire driving career. Very low-maintenance. Charges for pennies. A silent and powerful fighter jet. A reliable friend that never fails and gives a lot without asking too much in return. Will definitely keep it as long as I can.

Than you for an excellent overview. It is just enough to help my wife see what will be involved in driving the 2017 Bolt we just bought to replace my Leaf. We won't take possession until it has the new battery, so I'm using your video to prepare her. I have been involved in electric vehicles since the 1980s when I encouraged the municipality I worked for to get a lead-acid powered small pickup for the parks department. Range was 15-20 miles. The Bolt is such a vast improvement from those days, and it is a shame that it is likely to be discontinued once the batteries are replaced in all of the existing cars. But there are better things to come. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for posting this video. I'm looking to replace my high mile driver (2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution) with something else interesting to drive that won't leave me heartbroken if something happens to it. I'm going to miss my Evo terribly and regret selling it for a very long time. Prices on Bolt's are going up, hopefully in the new year I can find a new-enough model. So far I haven't been able to find one locally to drive to make sure I want one.

After driving a car that takes premium and gets 16mpg (2013 Camaro SS), I'm so ready to be done with paying insane gas prices and filling up so often. I want to go electric and the 2017/2018 Bolt is easily the best deal for the money. You can find them used for 17k. That color is what I want but it's super hard to find. Hoping to find one here soon and trade in my car since I just paid it off. Appreciate the in depth video.

Thank you for your video. We live in Phoenix,, and temp this summer is hot. How hot should the car get when charging? We charge after 8pm in the evening, and noticed the fan going off and the car said fully charged while the charger plugged in. The area of car where the charging plug goes in was really hot and most of the front end itself. My wife says she gets more charge, even though it says fully charged. Is the hot car normal and fan roaring? Fan will go off when we unplugged.
@AlexVassiosOfficial
@AlexVassiosOfficial 2 года назад
It’s normal! Mine started doing the same thing to me when it got hot out. I freaked out and researched it like crazy. It’s supposed to kick on to try and keep itself cool. Totally normal to have lot of heat in the front as it works to cool itself. The best thing is to just leave it plugged in and it will regulate itself.

Can I ask you guys, how does it perform in the winter? From some of the videos I've seen the battery gets a big hit in the winter. Is it that bad? do you even notice anything because I noticed you're filming in a garage.
@AlexVassiosOfficial
@AlexVassiosOfficial Год назад
The range really suffers poorly in the winter. I would blow through almost half a battery when driving 60 miles per day. On the coldest days, I would have to charge every day whereas in the warmer months I would only need to charge about every 2nd or 3rd day.

Good question. I don’t think so, at least I don’t think I could fit mine. The hatch is too short and narrow any way you try to fit the bike in. I’m considering putting a hitch mount on it so I can carry bikes, or just do something that goes on the back hatch.

Lane keep is only on the highest trim, I have a Premier but it doesn't have LK. Also I've heard the LK in the Bolt sucks. It'll only kick you back into your lane once half the car is across the line. 3.8 miles per kwh, pretty good for only having it a short time. It's more like 6 or 7 Bolts that caught fire, or at least it is now. Not sure about at time of filming, but you're right in that it's almost a non-issue. Did you get the 2nd update yet? I was waiting for it to take my Bolt in, using hilltop reserve was a good enough patch in the mean time. I almost got one with that same color, but I found a Premier that was only 1k more from a private seller and the dealership with the orange one ticked me off. You shouldn't do this, but if you pull fuse 34 you can turn that pedestrian warning speaker off. I find it super annoying, it'd be great if we could put custom sounds in it. Or wiring a switch into it wouldn't be too hard. Yeah, the Bolt definitely 'bolts' :P and you didn't even hit the 'Go faster' button. "Sport" next to the hazard button. Do note that it has a hard-wired 93mph top speed, found that out the 'fun' way lol //You showed it later. That little bit of faster max power can shave a couple tenths off of a 0-60 time. //You got the top speed in there too :P Good video :) One pedal driving in the Bolt is great. I tried out an eGolf and Fiat 500e and both sucked at it. I think they fixed it in the 2020 and newer Bolts, but if you're stopped in L mode the brake lights turn off unless you hit the actual brake. //That wasn't obvious to me, good on you for noticing it. I was lucky that I tried out the eGolf and Fiat first. I've since tried a Tesla and they are much quicker than the Bolt. The Bolt is far better bang for your buck, and GM is a somewhat better company, but Tesla's are stupid fast. If you can you should try to keep it between 10% and 90% (or ideally 20-80%), that'll make the battery last longer. Also the regen braking doesn't work well above 95% battery, there's nowhere for the energy to go. The Bolt tops out at 55kw charging, even on the best chargers, which means >60 minutes to recharge from 0-100; but again you should keep between 10-90 when possible. On a road trip it's a lot faster to charge just over what you need to get to the next charger rather than going to full or even 90% each time. This is probably the biggest downside with the Bolt compared to most other EVs, especially newer ones. And they didn't improve it on the refresh. But it's not like most people do road trips often. Nice, you pointed out how the 'charging cable' isn't the charging cable, just the EVSE. You pointed out a lot more than most of the Bolt reviews I've seen.

How do you get a car like this serviced or repaired? Is your only option Chevy dealerships?
@AlexVassiosOfficial
@AlexVassiosOfficial 3 года назад
Depends on what you need done. I needed a recall fixed so I had to bring it into the dealer. But when I put new tires on I’ll just bring it into Costco. There isn’t much maintenance on it, but anything with the computer and I’d bring it to the dealer, otherwise everything else can be done yourself or some other shop.

I'm getting very tempted by the Bolt. The more I see and hear about them, the more I like. I even like the color of the Bolt in this video. From the Understanding the Bolt EV video on the WeberAuto channel: www.RU-vid.com/watch?v=r37nqfnV9EU the battery charger module is under the hood. It's towards the right hand side under the DC to DC converter, which is next to the twelve volt battery. It's not next to the high voltage battery it's charging.

“If you drive well enough”? My wife drives slower than most. So I ask you if driving 5 mph below the posted speed limit is good for mileage of the Bolt EV? I would think the mileage would benefit, but no one talks about it.
@AlexVassiosOfficial
@AlexVassiosOfficial 3 года назад
It really depends. The faster you drive, the more power it takes to maintain that speed when encountering hills. So slower driving will lengthen the range a little bit, but nothing too much crazier than if you drove the speed limit.
@jonathancassidy122
@jonathancassidy122 3 года назад
@@AlexVassiosOfficial - Thank you for your reply. The problem with reviews about EV mileage is that it is all done at 65+ mph. We are consistently at or below posted speed limits. This means -55 mph. I know wind resistance is not linear. Yet there are no YT persons who drive and compare 30 - 55 mph to 55 - 75.
@AlexVassiosOfficial
@AlexVassiosOfficial 3 года назад
That makes sense. Expect better than projected range at less than 55mph. Any “in town” driving I do is fantastic for range. I usually don’t lose much range at all while in town because I’m constantly slowing down to regenerate.

@dankollars4501 3 года назад
i have a 2020 bolt and i can tell you that in town driving i can get well over the 259miles rated range(around 300mi). but on the hwy going the 70mph speed limit i will get between 175-200miles per charge, much less than advertised, and i know it will be much worse in the winter when i have to use the heat. im a little worried, i haven't been thru a winter yet and it gets below zero degrees f here. i wish i would have known this before buying. i do really like the car. its fun to drive like everyone says, it has a decent ride(i prefer softer suspension but its not too stiff) i cant really say anything about build quality yet as i only have 3k miles on it. so far great car but be prepared for big range fluctuations do to hwy and weather. i hope it holds up because i really want to put 200k miles on it to make it worth the cost for me.
