Former GameStop employee here, I got sick and tired of lying to customers. I stopped lying (against my managers direction) and sold people new systems/games if they wanted them. I used to work 20-30 hours a week, suddenly they cut my hours to 2 hours a week and I was told I would be fired if I didn't sell more pre-owned merchandise. This company sucks. Do not support it.

Customer: I'm looking to pre-order For Honor. Gamestop Employee: WHAT'S THAT? YOU WANT TO PRE-ORDER A USED COPY OF FOR HONOR?

As a former GameStop employee, I can confirm that this video is indeed accurate. Managers would go in the back and rewatch the security footage to make sure we would hand out lists of games for people to pre-order.

Blockbuster was a lot like this in its death throws. LAST thing we were supposed to do was a let a guy walk in, rent a movie, and leave. He had to buy a $50.00 monthly membership, buy overpriced candy, popcorn, rent a videogame for his nephew, sign up for the weekly newsletter, rent four other movies, schedule an appointment to rent more movies, get a foot massage, BJ, clean pressed suit, life insurance, groceries, Pokemon snap printouts... God forbid a guy spend just $5.56. This policy created palpable stress and anxiety, driving all the customers away who were tired of being hassled, and caused Blockbuster to go bankrupt.

TRUE STORY: 9 or more years ago gamestops BS had already driven me away but I really wanted Saints Row 1 I couldn't find anywhere so I went to GS as a last resort and saw the box on the display shelf I was like hell yes! I told the guy over the counter I wanted a new copy of SR1 and the guy said OK. He left the counter went to get the box from the display shelf and asked the fat manager lady to get the game. They put the game in the case in front of me and was selling it to me for full price. I was shy back then so I wasn't the type to get upset in public and show it, but right as I was about to reluctantly pay I forced myself to say, "oh... no I said I wanted a new copy" and the 3 employees a pale skinny girl in the background, the fat manager lady, and the skinny guy over the counter stared at me, the manager said "this is a new copy, no one has played it" and then I said "oh... I inched my money closer than said, but I mean new.... with the plastic on it (didn't know how to say sealed)". She then looked at me and the game shrugged her shoulders and said "we can shrink wrap it for you" In my mind I couldn't believe what I was hearing because a couple years prior I went to sell them a factory sealed midnight club game to them they where selling it for $50 and the guy tried to give me $12 for it, when I told him but it was unopened still sealed he said it was still used. I was SOOO tempted to blow up and tell them that story but I said "oh, ok. No thank you then" and left extremely disappointed and telling myself I fuck this store never again. That was the last time I ever walked into a gamestop again.

Hey, remember when Gamestop mysteriously got in a gigantic shipment of completely immaculate and new copies of Xenoblade for Wii but all of them were priced at $90 and listed as "used"? So glad Nintendo stepped in and released it on digital for a reasonable price.

I used to work in a videogame store (a popular franchise where I come from). My boss at the time pushed used sales to insane extends. Understandable. If some poor bloke is willing to sell a game he paid 70$ for 25$ so we can resale it for 50$ to 60$ you can imagine the profits he made (it was insane). We gave something like 25$ for games that just came out; for older games we gave something between 0,25$ to 15$. 15$ was for super ultra rare games you could potentially sell over 80$ on ebay. Oh, Valkyrie Profile? I look around... boss is not around. - Listen, don't tell my boss I told you that, but you could sell that game for 100$ on ebay and we would only give you 10$. Oh, Chrono Trigger? I look around... boss is watching. - We give two dollars per super Nintedo games. - Ah ok there you go. My boss back then asked us to decrease slightly the price of each games we bought from customers when the quantity of games sold to us was high enough to obfuscate the price drop. My ex boss used to check all sale stats just to make sure we were complying and if we weren't he would bring us in his office to ask us to do our job (which was clearly fucking poor people in the ass). The worst is... There was this guy... He was in the store talking with us like 80% of the time, it almost felt like he was an employee. It didn't take long for me to realize that the guy was retarded (not pejoratively). Everyone treated him like a king. At first I thought they just liked him and they were just being kind. Oh no no no.... That guy was regularly, buying new games from us and was very often selling the game back to us later the same day. It was not rare for him to come back a couple of days later to buy the very same game again. Many times I tried to tell him we were renting games and I tried so many times to tell him he could save so much money, but he never wanted to hear it. Little did he realize, I was actually risking my job just for suggesting him this idea. There was a wrestling game he sold and bought back TWENTY FUCKING EIGHT times. He even did this with consoles! The software we used allowed us to check how much money every customers spent in our store... This guy spent over 12k over a period of two years. Over TWELVE FUCKING THOUSAND dollars over TWO YEARS. One day, I heard my boss say to an employee with a smile "I love retards" and they both laughed. At some point, we wondered how the fuck does he have so much money. We assume he received some help from the government since he clearly didn't have a job. Our assumptions were confirmed when his father came in the store to explain the situation to my wonderful boss who responded basically that he cannot refuse to do business to an adult and that since the dude in question was an adult he would continue to do business with him (in a way that would suggest he is the protector of liberty or some self-righteous bullshit). Yeah, fuck videogame stores at best the people running them are fucking vultures and at worst they are fucking pieces of shit.

This was painfully accurate to how some actualy GS employees act. I went there other day just to buy a new mouse because mine was broken. Took me almost 30mins to get out the fucking door because the guy wouldn't shut the fuck up about memberships and preorders and used games. Its like bro, I clearly play on PC, I can't fucking trade my games in. Eventually he said I should "buy a ps3 game or something off a buddy and trade that in " or something to go towards the rewards, and at that point I straight up told the guy he was fucking creepy and made me never want to shop there again.

Crazy how sad this is. But on the other hand, Gamestop is obviously still in business and thriving. So what is more sad, is that a lot of people actually are okay with these practices? Or there are a lot of soccer moms or parents that don't really care, and anything that is a couple bucks cheaper, is fine enough. Little johnny will take what he gets. Because I don't know why else they are so successful. It's really insane. I stopped going to GameStop years ago, because it was so uncomfortable in their stores. Employees would almost bully you to pre-order. If you showed up on release date without a pre-order, they would sometimes refuse to sell you a copy (claiming they were out of stock). Or they usually give you the same line "well, we only have 1-2 extra copies. NEXT TIME your really should have pre-ordered". Never in my life, have I ever ran into something like this. Where shopping somewhere, actually made me feel guilty. I would walk away from GameStop, and actually feel bad, because the employees made me feel bad. Like that is absolutely crazy. I now know, that employees are put under immense pressure from the top. So I know it's not just asshole employees just being assholes to be assholes. But christ.

Haven't been to Gamestop in years, but I did recently go in to a local shop to see what used games they have in store. I get that they need to sell used games to stay in business, and I usually buy new games online. Sometimes it's fun to go see if they have anything older that's cheap and good/interesting. It's sad that small places like that are dying out, and it's a wonder this place is still in business, as they've been selling games in that small town for as long as I can remember, so around 20 or so years

I just went to gamestop to get spyro because it's right next to Dunkin donuts and it went great because the girl didn't try to sell me anything. The people at the other register got the whole shebang though. Was googling and I found a reddit post full of gs employees that love their jobs a little too much and were flaming this dude for not enjoying the art of the upsell. "Just shop on amazon or download if you don't like it" Okay Jan. Also my googling brought me back to this video and gave me some good laughs. I love mega64!

This experience just happened to me. I cancelled my Zelda pre-order to get Nioh. The dude tried to talk me out of it and also said they were sold out. I got a digital code and bounced.

You know what the biggest joke of it all is? People still shop there.

Radioshack was like this over a decade back. They came up with the practice of harassing customers and calling it good service. Employees were forced to try and sell satellite subscriptions and attach store credit card applications to each transaction as well as flavor of the month promotions from whichever cell phone provider was fellating corporate, and if you sold any cellphones without attaching overpriced, crappy accessories, you would quickly get the "Circle of Life" treatment. If you worked at a store where the majority of customers were low income folks looking to buy batteries or get a free phone with new activation, you were screwed. These people would spend only a couple of dollars per transaction, lowering the store average.This led to friction between the staff (who worked for commission as well), causing them to cherry pick customers who looked like they might spend more, causing even more friction when accusations of cherry picking were thrown around. Some stores even started lying to customers about "free accessories" which were actually added on to the price of new devices without the customers' knowledge, all so they could meet quotas handed down by district managers. Imagine being a customer, trying to shop at one of these stores, with employees who may hate each other and have contempt for you, the customer, while they try their best to profile you. Fuck Gamestop for making people put up with all too similar situation if they want to shop brick & mortar.

As a former assistant manager and senior game advisor at gamestop in a mall, I can confirm that gamestop was the sketchiest place I've ever worked for. Corporate would tell me to then tell my employees to sell third party "rock candy" controllers at the expense of lying about them breaking within days of use

I worked for EB which was bought out by GS. I never bullshitted customers. Luckily every manager I had wasn't breathing down my neck and were in fact cool guys. Unfortunately, we were to open brand new games so we could put cases on the shelves, but at least some sealed copies were still available. But, what are you gonna do. I was in high school and wanted a job that allowed me to rent games for free.

I pre-ordered Pokemon moon, went to pick it up a week Later and gave me a used copy I didn't realize it was used, till I played it and some random file was on it. This happen to anyone else?
