Jordan wasn't even unanimous in 96 with a 72 win team. Shows immense bias that even after he was a champ, some voters just refused to vote for him. The very next season, he comes back and leads his team to 69 wins and that's enough of an excuse to not vote him MVP. Unbelievable.

Barkley's my favorite player, and I'm not really a fan of Jordan, but I've never quite understood the "Jordan's selfish" position. Yes, the guy is probably the most competitive human being to ever live, and his main goal in life seems to have been to convince the entire world that he was the best basketball player ever. But he averaged five or six assists a game during most of his prime years. One year he got eight assists per game. He was clearly passing the ball, and not just trying to hog all the glory for himself.
@andu1854
@andu1854 8 месяцев назад
He also passed up game winning shot so his teammates could shoot a better shot… he made all his teammates better, and is kinda insane
@RVered
@RVered 8 месяцев назад
Fact: MJ and Kobe, who are often called "selfish," averaged more APG than Kevin Durant, Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter, Reggie Miller, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, John Havlicek, Elgin Baylor, James Worthy, Sydney Moncrief, Klay Thompson, etc. Also, MJ specifically averaged more than Rick Barry, Devin Booker, and Pete Maravich, in addition to being essentially tied, with statistically insignificant margins, with Clyde Drexler, Dwayne Wade, and Kyrie Irving. Both played when there was a stricter division between positions, without the modern NBA's positionless mentality. Players whose primary function on the court was to score from the perimeter (literally in the name of "SHOOTING guard.") were being selectively targeted for non-basketball reasons. The media's hypocrisy and legacy-damaging nonsense are out of control; in regards to conflicts with teammates and selfishness off the court, LeBron "participation trophy" James is worse: bullying Isaiah Thomas, publically calling out teammates, etc., in addition to far worse things like trading players on a whim, playing like a mercenary ring-chaser with no care for the teams and fanbases, forcing teams to give up everything to get what HE needs and leaving them in shambles with no future picks or assets whenever he jumps ship to farm rings with another team, calling himself "GOAT" and "King," etc.
@slingblade8963
@slingblade8963 8 месяцев назад
If a player is being doubled or triple teamed, he should average atleast 6 assists a game. Especially with the amount of time he had the ball.
@mrfatuchi
@mrfatuchi 8 месяцев назад
Not to mention he plays primarily off ball while Lebron(sorry to bring him up but this is main thing why everyone elevates him over Jordan) plays with ball and is ball hog dominant. The fact Jordan averaged as much as he did says how well he fit in a team. Bulls got 6 rings lol if he was so selfish they wouldbt have won as much.
@slingblade8963
@slingblade8963 8 месяцев назад
@@RVered A lot of the players you mentioned were either on teams that had a true point guard, were dominantly jump shooters or had a balanced team that allowed them to be defended single coverage. The impressive stat that has to be mentioned is Clyde Drexler's assists as he played the majority of his career with Terry Porter who was a true point guard. Then the latter of his career with the low post offence run through Olajuwon. Jordan never really played in a team with a true point guard.

I remember this season vividly and don’t remember the MVP race being controversial actually. Magic would he named “athlete of the decade” as well and that banner would hang in the Forum. Keyword “athlete” and considering the names that decade like Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky, Jerry Rice, etc that’s how much the media thought of him and his 5 championships. Meanwhile, Barkley would he labeled often as a bad boy and Jordan would get bounced from the playoffs every year. Scoring leaders usually weren’t considered winners then and that title would usually go to someone who was on a .500 team In the end, it was a popularity contest and not only did Magic have the most hype at the time, but his team also played in the 2nd biggest media city in the USA
@CrazyxEnigma
@CrazyxEnigma 8 месяцев назад
@@eddieG667 Looking back I think the only reason it's viewed as controversial is because Barkley is the only candidate to have the most 1st place votes and not win it. If Magic had the most 1st place votes that angle goes away.

@@CrazyxEnigma you could be right, but I think an additional reason is Magic’s legacy really hasn’t aged well. Of all the all the greats growing up, I think the RU-vid highlights and other social media posts keep pushing his stock down lower. It’s at a point of disrespect as far as i’m concerned. I guess out of dominant runs, the one that can’t get captured on a stat sheet or even highlights is Magic’s effect on a game. He can have 8 points on a stat sheet but yet dominated the game and elevated other players. Heck, he made someone MVP of an all star game who wasn’t even supposed to be there in 1987 in Tom Chambers
@TheUltimateRage
@TheUltimateRage 8 месяцев назад
The MVP race is all about marketing. As Andy noted, the criteria for MVP are specifically kept vague so that it can be used as a topic to create content. Considering the fact that "the media" is merely just a group of people with microphones, everyone in media has their own view as to what constitutes an MVP. Their views can shift based on the person who they favor, which is why the narratives change from year to year. As an example, Russell Westbrook won an MVP because of amazing statistics despite OKC's less-than-stellar record as a 5th seed in the west. However, the context of HOW and WHY he won it is on some storybook shit. Obviously, you had the story about KD not only just leaving, but also joining Golden State who had just put them out after choking the 3-1 lead. Then, you had *that* specific game against Denver late in the season, where Westbrook accomplished 3 major feats. First, Westbrook secured the triple double record to supplant the Big O with a 50 point triple double (which he *could* have secured in the *previous* game against the Suns, but the Suns weren't havin' it). Second, he hit a CRAZY game winner *while* securing the record. Third, *that* win for OKC knocked the Nuggets out of playoff contention. So even though the Thunder weren't a GREAT team with a top record, the story being the story is what swung the MVP in Westbrook's favor, as well as his stunning, historic stats and amazing, intriguing playstyle. All those things combined to earn Westbrook an MVP. Now, get this, James Harden was in the running for MVP and was neck-and-neck with Westbrook, but the Westbrook story was just too good. Subsequently, perhaps even ironically, Harden's Rockets ended up putting out the MVP in the first round of the playoffs in 5 games, reached the WCF and went 7 games with arguably the most talented team ever assembled (the Warriors with KD).
@nevinjoseph7151

I think u got ur years mixed up Rockets took the Warriors to 7 in 2017-18 when Harden won MVP Whereas what we're talking about is 2016-17
@Nothereman9999
@Nothereman9999 8 месяцев назад
I never felt MVP voting criteria is vague, it's trying to find which singular player contributed most to their teams success, that can be done in a multitude of ways. Take Steve Nash's MVP, Phoenix won 29 games the year before he showed, then they won over 60. When they lost their best scorer, Nash still kept them afloat winning more than 50 games that season, that shows value to a team's success. Now take Westbrook in 2017. They only won 47 but how many would they have won if Westbrook wasn't there? 20 maybe? If Westbrook could only win 30 games he wouldn't have been MVP, the fact is it was a small miracle he dragged that team to the playoffs. It's not really a stat thing. In fact, I think it's a big reason why Giannis only won 2. Because since those MVP seasons we've seen Milwaukee win games without him, A LOT.

Should’ve been Jordan. Wouldn’t have been upset if Barkley won it, but that mvp race gave us one of the best quotes. When magic won it, Barkley complained “Magic won because he makes James Worthy look good. I gotta make Shelton Jones look good!” 😂

point guards are given a lot of credit. They always have the ball and have the option for an assist or a score. If Barkley played point, both points and assists would go up (in theory - yes I know he's not a point guard). To leave Barkley off the top 3 was silly. If he's not 1st, he's 2nd and so on. In my idea, three two main stats to use to judge who is the best player of a season are the Box Plus/Minus the Win Share and the Number of victory of your team Win share and Box PM because these stats were created for that, to tell how a player contributed to a victory (which is I think the true definition of a Valuable Player) But I think that have a Win Share of 16 in a very good team could be more impressive that have a WS of 20 in a very bad. Because in a very good team, that's less easy to be remarkable. If the team is bad around you, you will be more remarkable. And based on that, I think the MVP should be Magic or MJ, based on what do you think was more valuable, and Barcklay a solid third.
