Stealth so good that you are better off looking out the window. I think the f22 has a cross section at the theoretical specification of 0.0001 and the mod has it set as close the that as DCS can get which I think is actually 0.002
@@BBCRFSomeone is salty that they don't have any 5th gen fighters at all. Hundreds of f22 and f 35 and you can't get an SU 57 which has a cross section similar to a hornet. Source? The manufacturer itself. Look up your 5th gen cross section. Still a lot worse than your statement here

My boss is a former air force pilot, he confirmed the reason they used the F-22 is because it is the only fighter in the US inventory capable of flying combat maneuvers at the altitude that balloon was at. Cool fact, they couldn't use radar or infrared seekers to track the balloon since it gave off no heat and was invisible to radar, so the pilot had to manually aim his sidewinder via the bore sight with the seeker head turned off to hit the balloon, basically like an unguided rocket. That fighter squadron already has patches made up with a popped balloon and Winnie the Pooh on it with the words Float Around and Find Out around the perimeter.
When I was a kid, in like 2004ish an F-22 would do transonic flights over my house every once in a while. I think they were coming from Arnold Air Force Base. At the time I thought the sonic booms were pretty annoying, but as I've gotten more into aviation I look back at it pretty fondly.
Highly unlikely it was breaking the sound barrier over your house. USAF jets aren't allowed to do that as it can cause damage to windows, etc. Chances are it was just loud as the F-22 and F-35 are extremely loud. Edit: The only times they are allowed to break the sound barrier over land would be in an emergency situation, and when they have very specific authorization from a higher ranking officer to do so. Also, when training over water they're allowed to do it, and no authorization is required over water.
@@SymeonPhronema I agree they weren't likely intending to hit mach, but it was 2000 and some hotshot pilots were probably willing to get closer to that line than they ought to. I'm pretty sure they were real sonic booms though. Usually when the jets went over head it would be like very nearby rolling thunder, slowly fading away into the distance, occasionally though there would also be a massive boom that was just over in an instant, like a shot from a rifle.
i played F22 Interceptor sim in 1992 or something, on the Amiga500 i think. Years later they announced the F22 to the public. That still makes me think about why tf i knew about this technology as a kid, way before anyone else.
F-22 Interceptor was released in February 1991 based on the Lockheed YF-22 prototype that was revealed in August 1990 and first flew in September 1990. In April 1991 the YF-22 was selected over the YF-23 as the next Air Force fighter.
Yeah, slow speed DCS Mod F22 is fucking lethal in dogfights. FCS override, high AOA capable, low stall speed, you can fuck hard. You will out perform most fighters in 1 circle and 2 circle fights. Your slow speed control is insane, you can rudder roll very effectively. You can force controllable flat spins and recover from them easily. Shame the AI doesn't know how to use them.
"imagine you're sleeping in your apartment on a Sunday morning," and your windows get blown out and you get showered with glass 😨 a stunt with that many civilian casualties would be a quick way to get a court marshal
These aircraft fly ANYWAY, so that's why it makes perfect sense to use one to kill a baloon. It actually doesn't cost anything extra if you're not counting the single AIM-9X fired
The reason they used the F-22 on the balloon was rlly two reason 1. To have the F-22’s first air to air kill and 2. Bc the F-22’s guidance systems was best for a balloon made if mostly fiber and wood which radar waves mostly move right through. Also once Canada tried to shoot down their own balloon before straying into Russian air space so they sent to F/A-18’s and both unloaded a full load of 20mm’s and the balloon continued to drift for thousands of miles before crashing. They’re built to stay in the air as long as possible therefore 100k missile was the perfect Choice so that the US could down the balloon in US waters to retrieve it and study it
"...Has fought such dangerous foes." Yeah that F-22 really showed that Balloon who the better aircraft is. Thing was such a danger. Luckily he had this multi-million dollar jet to fire a million dollar missile at a balloon worth a fraction of the cost. I dunno what they would've done without the F-22, no way an F-15 or F-16 or F/A-18 could've handled such a task. Not like such a dangerous foe could be taken down by the likes of a farmer with a BB gun in a Hot Air Balloon. (Ok it was probably too high for that, but the joke still stands lmao.)
hey Drewski be awesome to see you do playthrough of the fallout 4 lost world mod. its stalker themed and the gun play is incredible i think you would enjoy it and i would love to see your tactical play style of a mod that takes fallout 4 and turns it into a different game altogether
If this plane was being made in the 70’s to 2005 then I’d love to know what the US really has. Like we could be talking a ship that can go in space or something
Just high enough where they don't have to make it like an outer space type satellite to keep it low key from everyone by not having to launch a rocket, and easier to bring back over a time of researching. But even when caught visual or radar, etc. They hoped that no one could get high enough to reach it without being caught. But sending the F-22s it has the height advantage and is harder for them to track and even attack,, that's been my opinion, but watching ya I'm believing they wanted to get something that could get to that height, get a lock on target, and want something that'll make its presence seem as least as possible,, let the F-22 eat 🙏
Don't forget when dogfighting in the f22 to change your fcs mode to override, let's you pull max Gs, unlike the fcs normal mode that drew was in which made his dogfight very difficult. Also for that ai fight the ai is defaulted to react to being attacked, so they shoot when you shoot.
@@OperatorDrewski It really isnt thrust vectoring tho, its like deactivating the SAS on the j11/su27/33, although not at that extent to lose control easily, the thrust vectoring version exists, but grinelly himself has to give it to you
Worked with the F-22 for the past 3 years up in Alaska. It is such a supremely awesome jet. Fun fact: the one used to play Starscream in the Transformers movie has a Deception logo inside the nose landing gear.
Yeah, regarding the balloon, F-22 along with F-15 are the only current US fighters that can reach 60,000 feet. Also I imagine with it's thrust vectoring the Raptor especially comes in handy given how wide the turning radius would be at that altitude, due to the air being so thin at 60k feet, I imagine even normally quite maneuverable aircraft would start to feel like bricks
also, they didn't know the real purpose of the balloon, it could be a harmless loose meteorology balloon or a tricky attack with unknown devices onboard and stealth became handy against it
The F-35 and F-22 were designed for different mission sets. The 35 has less internal stores, built in TGP, and it’s very good at CCC. But it’s designed to take out enemy air defenses in stealth and then place external pylons with A2G stores and take out other ground targets. Because of its integrated sensors it’ll make any friendly forces far more lethal so it’ll linger in the air space and start CCC for the area.
Worked on the F-22 for 7 years. This was the Second balloon kill, First A/A Kill, and i was sitting under the wing for the first one. I was working at Hot Pits (refueling on the ground while the aircraft is running) at Langley AFB in 2009, and a Mylar balloon from the BX, started to float over the west ramp. I was under the left wing when I heard my A man call out “uhhh.. we have a balloon coming.” I peeked under the flaps, and sure enough it was about 20-30 feet in the air, floating toward one of the other jets. Pilot calls “surfaces clear” and I tucked in deep under the wing, you didn’t want your head anywhere near a moving flap and/or horizontal stab. “Clear.” I called while I’m kneeling and keeping myself grounded on refueling attachment. He tilted the stick back and pointed the thrust up at the balloon, which went immediately from a limp, crumply thing to a taut ball, apparently the jet exhaust made it expand fully and leak more air, because this time it floated a good 150 feet into the air, and landed in the grass next to the runway, where our Hot Pit Super picked it up. We all joked and called it a ground to air kill on a balloon, but when it comes down to it, we saved aircraft from a lot of time consuming and expensive maintenance.
@@OperatorDrewski It was definitely one of those antics we didn't really want the papers to know about... you know "first kill of a multimillion dollar stealth fighter was a Mylar Birthday balloon" just kinda... doesn't shine a good light.
@@Pythos_Sapunov What would happen to the plane if the baloon was eaten by one of the intakes? I'm sure it would survive, but would the entire insides have to be dismantled and thoroughly cleaned?
@@flare242 the engines would have to be removed and subjected to an inspection after any object of significance is injested on the ramp. . While balloons, and other small objects like string might seem like it would be harmless for a jet engine to intake, damaging the compressor blades can cause major damage that can manifest itself during flight. Another little story, Back in the early EARLY days of youtube, in 2006, I was out in Korea and two... enterprising crew chiefs... thought it would be funny to make a video for youtube of them trying to throw a frog into the intake of an F-16. The video was quickly removed, and the entire Wolf Pack was on a War day the next morning. As for what happened to the crew chiefs, more than likely they were courts marshalled
There's another DCS youtuber I watch from time to time called GrowlingSidewinder (sorry Drewski), and he would turn off the radar in the F-22 and would sneak up on people. They never saw him coming until he was in formation with them. There was one kill he got from sheer panic. The player was so terrified when he finally saw him, that he went into aerobatics and smashed into the ground. It was hilarious. 😂
OperatorDrewski is the only channel I know of that teaches me tons about not only history but the nice little insights on his past while providing amazing entertainment thanks for the videos over the years brother can't wait for the next one already.
More of this please, it was awesome!! (And it looks like some people have already mentioned to turn off the fcs/turn on combat fcs for better maneuver characteristics… can’t wait for more!)
@@NationChosenByGodis he? I've seen them flying together on the same side(against advanced enemy) and if I remember correctly Longshot got shot down more times than GS.
I've always loved the F-22, I've gotten to see them flying in real life a few times at airshows and it's amazing how loud and fast they are. I even knew a guy who's twin was a pilot in the Air Force and flew them and he said it was the best experience of his life. He said it literally makes you feel like a super hero how easy they are to maneuver and how fast they are. I always wanted to be a fighter pilot when I was a kid, but I had crappy eyesight and a fear of heights.
Honestly, a tutorial on how you're using the radar in the F22 would be phenomenal.. I always end up having to use visual identification and shots with the 120s. I can never figure out the radar usage in the mod.
it uses the same radar as the f15 for this mod, as most of its systems are taken from the f15, and there is plenty of f15 tutorials on youtube, and i bet they would help you out a lot
@@thegman431 oh snap. I forget that most times I go to fly it. Thanks dude. 😅 I'll have to check those out. I literally bought fc3 JUST for the f22 mod
I would love to see a video with you and growling sidewinder! He could definately show you the capability of the f22 and watching the two of you dogfight would be amazing!!!
I remember at an air show you could go in any plane on the ramp except the F-22 was locked up with someone standing outside it. Must be absolute insane technology on board.
I lived in that 4 apartment tower when i was stationed in Guam 🇬🇺…. Map is very detailed…I would get a great view of the Aircraft making there approach to Andersen AFB.
So the F-22 has the RCS of a bumblebee and the F-22 was sent to shoot down the balloon for a multitude of reasons that include the mentioned high altitude celling, advanced sensors to detect the balloon and the ability to quickly dispatch of it without much problem.
your DCS F/A-18C is a Lot 20, which means it's the latest and greatest of all the Charlies, it's from the early 2000s, last batch before the US Navy switched to Rhinos.. At least that was the initial reasoning from ED when ppl asked for ILS rather than ICLS etc.. "We are modelling a specific model, US Navy Lot 20, and as such it does not have ILS".. i mean later on they changed their narrative a bit when they released the LITENING Pod rather than ATFLIR first (specifically a Spanish Charlie Hornet LITENING, coincidentally after announcing the Viper, which also can carry a LITENING pod?).. So yea, while we have a Spanish LITENING, we still don't have ILS.. I'm not sure if it's still supposed to be a Lot 20 Charlie tbh, but at least that's what it initially supposed to be (and majority of systems probably still reflect that).
4:10 Yeah its pretty much as you said, its near invisible on radar. In fact its radar cross section is so small its about the size of a bumblebee, which is just insane for something of its size
I’m almost 10 years older than you and I remember drawing pictures of the F14 Tomcat when I was a kid… probably about the year u were born. Such an iconic plane!
Personally my favorite fighter jet is the Rafale(I'm french so this is understandable) I have the Rafale mod for DCS and I really like it. I have a BIG book with almost every plane that ever flew, there is the F-22 but sadly there isn't the Rafale😢
The raptor has already been simulated; its in a game from the 90s called F-22 Total air War; u should check it out. Has a dynamic campaign and the ability to play as the AWACS too. Even has pretty accurate stealth and supercruise modelling
@@Raptic556 Dude… no it’s not, that’s not thrust vectoring. That’s an override to AOA limit… like your aileron and elevator control surfaces which is separate from thrust vectoring. FCS has been in the F-22 mod for a couple of years, and the developers state that they haven’t released the thrust vectoring version to the PUBLIC.
i THINK that rcs of the f-35 is 0,005m2 an the f-22 have 0,001 BUT IM NOT SURE!, and i dont think annyone knows that arent in the military or devlopers,
Oh and here in Panama City Beach Florida, the f-22 buzzes the beach allot from Eglin aireforce base, f-35 is multi rule with vertical flight variants, and have carrier ability
By watching Growling Sidewinder's F-22 voyages I think you should be quite easily able to smoke those Sukhois without much of a struggle in BVR :D You have stealth, you have range, you have TWS. They should be sitting ducks.
Yep, he flew right towards them, if they managed to lock him(if it were su-35s they could I guess) and shoot back before diving down he would have been in trouble
1:58 the F-22s tracking the balloon were jamming its communications while recording and collecting them. Only other plane that could have done that is the F-35 but its flight ceiling is too low.
@@johnxina6823 So they didn’t updated it to have thrust vectoring… Lame. 😒 FCS has been in the F-22 Mod for a long time, it’s just an AOA limit on the ailerons and elevators.
The estimated RCS of the f22 is about 0.001 m^2, which is comparable to a bumble bee, whereas the f3 is estimated at 0.05 m^2, closer to a golf ball. Additionally, the SU-57 has an estimation of 0.1 - 1 m^2 of RCS.
Another interesting fact of the F22 is that it is so capable that the US made a doctrine disallowing export of it, however this was tested when it was almost sold to Israel, though the sale never went through.
