As students head back to class, a new book challenges colleges to better prepare young people for life after they graduate. “The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure” says many teens and young adults are unprepared for the real world. Authors Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt join “CBS This Morning” to discuss how campuses are teaching students to think in ways that will increase their likelihood of becoming anxious and easily hurt.

"Always listen to your gut." Is great advice. You should be in touch with your subconscious emotions. They might be telling you something before you can express it rationally. "Always trust your gut." Is utterly terrible terrible advice though. Because those emotions will often be animalistic overreactions.

Great distinction! "Listen" != "trust." There seem to be many sayings that are misused or misquoted, totally distorting the logic of our fellow humans. For instance, "correlation does not equal causation." This is wrong, because science wouldn't work unless correlation sometimes equaled causation. A more accurate statement would be "correlation does not guarantee causation," for you can have both accidental coincidences and cause-and-effect coincidences.

Listening can never harm. Acting on it is a different story. Also, in my own experience feelings are different than gut feelings. Gut feelings are often a deeper, literally and figuratively, type of intuition. A sort of pre verbal rationality that tends to be right.

Andy Brice - no it’s not. Lots of time “gut” does not take to account reason.

My professors didn't coddle me or my classmates, they were honest and constructive with criticism on a regular basis without being complete a-holes. With that said, there were some freshmen every semester who clearly had been coddled before reaching college and were unable to accept any criticism because they had only been told how smart and great they were and had come to expect such praise.

The problem is that universities are being run more and more like businesses, so those few overprotected, emotionally fragile kids are being catered to more and more as "customers."

Pretty much sums up why the mainstream media is dead. 'Sorry, we are out of time'

It's only natural for us humans to seek pleasure and try to avoid pain, like all other living beings. But we keep getting better and better at it. And so with progress, we become more and more fragile. Our materialistic well-being goes up but our psychological well-being goes down. We are anxious and depressed because we are technologically evolved. Those who had to fight for survival didn't have the time to complain. The thing is : we can't go back. So we have to deal with it (and take anti-depressant).

Haidt and Lukianoff and the title of their book uses an expression, that anyone who lived through the American ’60’s will recognise, as the purest kind of shaming Conservative agitprop: ‘coddling’. It also pays homage to that self-appointed Platonic Guardian Allen Bloom, whose book The Closing of the American Mind was once the urtext of another generation of Conservatives and Liberals, whose reason d’etre was to attack ‘Students’ as a cover for their failed policies and politics. Greg Lukianoff is president of Foundation for Individual Rights in Education which is funded by : Adolph Coors Foundation: $45,000 (2012, 2015) Bradley Foundation: $1,490,000[2] Charles G. Koch Foundation:$955,561 (2008-2014) Claude R. Lambe Foundation: $740,000 (2005-2007) DonorsTrust and Donors Capital Fund: $1,372,500 (2012-2015) Jaquelin Hume Foundation: $235,000 (2001-2011) Randolph Foundation: $62,000 (2009-2011) Sarah Scaife Foundation: $355,000 (2012-2014) Searle Freedom Trust: $300,000 (2008-2013) www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/Foundation_for_Individual_Rights_in_Education Calling the majority of the contributors to Mr. Lukianoff's 'Think Tank' politically reactionary is fully in order! The evidence is clear what Mr.Lukianoff’s politics are, but what does Social Psychologist Jonathan Haidt offer? He provides a new expression of Determinism based on a pastiche of Neuroscience, that appeals to those in search of an unquestionable, ineluctable explanatory frame for human behavior. Yet each ‘new’ instantiation of Determinism is eventually put to question! StephenKMackSD

The bible says lead your heart and guard your heart because out of it flows the issues of life. They do not teach kids how to be wise in grade school. Lack of wisdom is about as bad as being uneducated. Don't learn what to think learn how to think.

Anxious, depressed, and polarized students. Well when you go to school in areas of mass shootings I believe that has a polarizing effect on many children, teens and adults....
@culperjr7310

Wow...there hasn't been a mass school shooting in my area. What's their excuse. Not every school has had a mass shooting, so that can't be an excuse. And if you are comparing mass shootings to needing safe spaces from difference of opinion then you are part of the problem.

Bunch of horseshit. Mass shootings affect barely anyone.
@southafricanizationofsociety20
diane santos Actually certain neighborhoods are the most dangerous areas to be in. “Gun violence affects black and Latino people in poor, inner-city neighborhoods on a regular basis. As The Washington Post reported, black people are 10 times more likely to be killed by a gun crime, and yet our deaths by gun are much less likely to result in national conversations in which liberals and conservatives duke it out over the second amendment. We become statistics, just one more added to the number of gun deaths in the US in a particular year, and that's all.” www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/apr/29/us-gun-crime-race-disparity

I would like them to address whether the rise of the single mom and women have empowered this pathetic state we are in (over protectiveness). Women are told they are perfect and so they are completely unaware of their tendency to over protect and coddle (experiments show this to be true).
