I am very happy to be back doing these streams after a long hiatus. I am not sure I can do once a week again but every 2 weeks seems to be in the cards. It also helps that Imperial Japan is one of my favorite topics to read and talk about.

I feel it's such an...underappreciated topic. The European front has definitely got its charm, it also has the research that I wish the Pacific theater had; or the attention if nothing else. Honestly, do you have any recs as far as research pieces are concerned? I do a bit of exploration, but I'm never above asking for works to learn from, especially with the way you two approach things!

I was listening to this one since it has been a while I am taking notes to give a better presentations going forward. I think I am a bit out of practice given my hiatus. I did misspeak and say I think MacArthur is good. I still do not think so but I can see now that he had his moment from roughly March 1943-November 1944. He now seems less incompetent and more erratic. Also someone said in the chat that Trump is my "Fuhrer" and I hope he wins to help Putin despite being convicted. Maybe a troll, but I do think it is worth making a few things clear going forward into this election. 1. I do not like or respect Trump. He is lazy, a clown, and a rapist. I do not like Putin but I do respect him. I do note areas where Trump was capable and I do not have TDS. Hell, Pierce had some successes too. Rare is the man as incompetent as Bush, Biden, and Buchanan. 2. Trump was not friends with Putin. He sent more weapons to Ukraine than Obama, although Trump was certainly not following the Biden strategy as regards to Russia. 3. The Trump trial is complicated and I think both sides on this argument have a point for and against. That said, I do think he is guilty although I think the trial and charges were overly punitive and political. I also wish Bush and company (who did worse things than Trump) had went on trial. It seems to me it s really about Trump angering the oligarchy and Biden's hatred for Trump, which seems genuine. But Trump is also pretty guilty of what he was charged with. Like I said I feel mixed on this one.

The Dutch Revolt is pretty interesting. Johan van Oldenbarnevelt's head was chopped off in a military coup simply because he opposed restarting war with Spain in 1621. If the Dutch never join the 30 years war in 1621, it never lasts 30 years. By that point, the Catholics controlled Bohemia and the Palatinate and were victorious on all fronts.

Arms limitation was good for Japan in a global scenario against industrial Western and Soviet power. Against pre-industrial neighbours and the east Asian outposts of European powers under pressure back in Europe, arms limitations were a hindrance.

About 27 divisions worth of American ground troops eventually fought in the Pacific vs 68 for Europe. I'm glad Sean dedicated some time to Biak (pronounced Bee-ehk). There was only a standard Amphibious Task Force comprising a couple Heavy Cruisers and 25 destroyers supporting the Invasion with the air cover provided by ground based Aircraft (No US Carriers at Biak). The Japanese attempted 3 times to launch counterattack operations but shifted their main fleet north to support the Marianas operation instead. MacArthur intelligence underestimated the amount of Japanese combat troops by half and it took 4 American Regiments 2 months to secure the island compared to the 2 week time schedule which necessitated the quick Invasion of lighter defended Noemfoor. Japanese troops held up in large coral caves were later found to be resorting to cannibalism.

38:08 Churchill was an idiot, don't get me wrong, but I think the planes to Singapore thing is maybe not it. Wikipedia states on 6 Dec 1941 "it became apparent the Germans did not have the strength to take Moscow" Churchill and FDR have said "Europe first". Basically the USSR is critical and looks parlous. The British had enough stuff there to at least put up a challenge, but it was poorly planned, poorly lead, poorly coordinated, with poorly trained troops.

Reinhard Heydreich was also assassinated by the allies in WWII. So yeah it was quite common for our side to resort to dishonorable and cowardly assassination plots. Also, Thersites, I asked you once about a mass unaliving of Christians by Jews in antiquity. You probably dont remember, but fwiw, check out the Persian conquest of Jerusalem in the Byzantine Persian wars of the early 600s. It got so bad that the Persians had to step in and call them off. The more things change, the more things stay the same. Can the Americans play Persia today and call the dogs off, or will the Jews repeat a depopulation of their enemies again, this time Gaza and West Bank.

Regarding land battles, I know it's unfashionable to make such arguments, but physiognomy is a factor. Partly genetic, partly simply due to diet - US troops were simply bigger and stronger on average. Japanese commitment and bravery is undeniable. However, if we allow (which is a massive assumption) that general quality and training of the troops was similar, and that US troops lacked their later overwhelming firepower superiority, there is a massive advantage from the endurance and ability for intense physical activity that simply growing up better fed and on average being bigger and physically stronger provides.
@mrgabagoo580
@mrgabagoo580 3 месяца назад
To add some information, a quick Google search indicates that in the 1950s the average Japanese male was 150cm. In 1939 the average US male was 175cm.

@@kvnrthr1589 As I recall, part of the discussion here was regarding the first year of the war when, in terms of firepower, airpower, moral and training was fairly balanced, if not actually in favor of the Japanese, yet the US troops held out against the odds in the Philippines.
