I am on day 6 of a fast, and in the week prior to the fast, I only ate one meal per day for the previous 6 day. I feel great! I have a lot of weight to lose, and it is coming off very quickly. To confirm what Dr Fung says, my body fat % is dropping as fast as my weight, which means the vast majority of the weight being lost is fat, not lean tissue. I intend to keep the fast going until my body tells me it is time to stop. I have no fear of yo-yo weight after the fast because I can very happily resume the Keto diet I was on for the 3 months prior to beginning the fast. Thanks so much for this summary. You answered a lot of questions for me. I'm a new subscriber now:-)

Fasting is amazing!! After I got over my fear I started fasting by eating one meal a day some days I go 26 hours or longer. I have dropped those stubborn extra pounds - nothing else worked - I'm seeing my muscle tone finally:D My boyfriend will be home in another month and I can't wait to show him how amazing I look and feel. I have super powered energy, my low blood sugar problems are gone, my hair is growing amazingly fast ❤️ spiritually as well I could write a book!!!

Nice summary. Thank you. I've done 5 days of water only and I can confirm that there is only a short period of discomfort somewhere between 36 and 48 hours where ghrelin peaks. For me, it was a mild headache lasting about 3 hours which I just slept-off. After that it was smooth sailing. I could have easily kept going after 5 days, but it was getting boring eating nothing - very unsociable :-) NB. I was already Keto fat adapted before I attempted this 5 day fast. I think that is important.

On day 3 of a 5 day fast, where I drink 1 coffee, 4 shakes comprised of mana powder/spirulina/wheat grass powder/green superfood powder, and a protein shake (zero carb) post workout. Loved how you mentioned not watching food videos, because that's all I've been doing...it has not helped. My experience so far: Day 1: Easy and workout went very well (Weight: 186.7). Day 2: Not bad, a little hunger around lunch. Lots of cramping towards the end of my run, plus a much slower pace than normal Day 3: Woke up feeling hungover, a bit of dizziness, weakness, and mental fog (maybe keto-flu?) (Weight 182.2) Looking forward to eating Saturday morning!

You did not mention dry fasting, which is actually 10 times more beneficial than water or tea fasting. Hope you get to experience it some day. I just completed 50 hour dry and switched to water, tea and coffee as well as herbs. So far this is day 5 with no food and I feel amazing. Going to the gym and everything. Please don't just jump into a dry fast though. It needs some preparation. I messed up once and stated while I was not in katosia and though it was not dangerous it didn't feel very good. I might make a video on preparing for a dry fast. Thank you for your amazing work. Keep it coming :)

Thank you !! I've been following Dr. Fung for awhile and doing Keto . Have tried Fasting with black coffee , but I can't go very long . Started adding just a tea. spoon of heavy cream and finally made it to 24 hours . Been researching as much as I can on do's and don't , some say No coffee - others black coffee - Mark Sisson said a little cream ( if wanted ) will slow your weight loss , but not completely . Actually using Fasting to maintain , even on Keto it's hard for me to stop the snack Monster once I start :( Three years in my journey and it still wants to Chase me lol

This was an awesome review of the book. Thank you so much. I plan to purchase it within the next week. I've been on my weight loss journey for 8 weeks now with IF with low calorie intake but upped it to fasting for the last 45 hours. I'm down 16 pounds and have another 20 to go. Does the book say anything about Spinal Cord Injuries and if it's safe? I'm a paraplegic, complete, and have debated about making a Drs appointment with my family physician or gastroenterologist to talk about my weight loss journey. I'm hoping the book has something that'll help me with my questions.

From a personal experience and to get the best result without freaking out your body, start with 16/8 fast. Once it becomes natural, then week by week, make it 17/7, 18/6, 19/5 and etc. However, my recent fast has changed. I eat every 22 hours, that's when I get hungry after 22 hours, so I eat one meal every 22 hours, which means my meal time changes every day. Don't force your body. If you're in ketosis, it's a smooth ride.

Nice vid, I just did a 40 hour fast to see how it would go, I IF by skipping breakfast always and lunch most days out of habbit not because I'm really hungry (starting IF was much harder as I got very hungry back those days lol I had experimented with what worked and had tried 23/1 days that sometimes were 22/1 or 25/1 lol) Pshygologically it was different, I actually lapsed and had a bannana and some fruit 10 pm pushing back my fast some hours xD I normally don't get hungry after dinner but the idea of not eating made me hungry haha next day was a breeze never felt hungry until like 10 pm, and then it went away very quickly too. 2nd day I started to feel hungry from 10am ish so broke the fast around 1 for lunch. It was very easy and feels very good to have skipped food for a day if it wasn't for a birthday I would do another 2 day fast, but I never let fasting get in the way of social obligations =)

I want to do an extend fasting of at least 28 days. I have seen people go for longer and I'd be happy to do that to see better results. I have tried to lose weight for a long time and have achieved some results but I was having an issue with keeping off the weight and also by the rigorous diet changes. I want to solely just drink water for this fasting and plan to consume some vitamins after my fasting is done to prevent any vitamin deficiency. Any recommendations as far as what I should do during my fasting to prevent any complications? By the way I'm healthy no health issues at all.

There's evidence that zero-calorie beverages have no effect on weight loss (as opposed to regular), but that's just correlations which are subject to lifestyle differences. They definitely don't spike insulin, so there should be no issues with it.
@mostlyKeto

some sweeteners are fine, while the research on others has shown that they can alter the gut microbiome. I'd go with natural sweeteners whenever possible and then test yourself to see if those zero-calorie beverages have any effect on your blood sugar & hunger levels.

You don't need to fast. You are very lean and need to eat more. I understand the benefits of fasting and I have followed the Keto way of eating for nearly 3 years now. I started it not to lose weight as I was already done losing 80lbs using high protein low fat lower carb. I just feel that Keto is good for overall health and disease prevention. Fasting I feel should be used more specifically for those who need it. Just be careful to use it strategically and not obsessively. Many get obsessive and want to test how long they can go. I think this can become unhealthy in the long term. Hormone balance is so important as well. It would be detrimental to your overall health if you try to fix one thing and break another. Just my feeling on it. Good luck with your Keto journey and thanks for your updates.

Leouise; Keep in mind, this is Intermittent Fasting and not straight through fasting. Forget fasting as losing weight tool. Fasting has so many benefits for every person (unless you're too young or pregnant or sever Type 1 diabetic or very under weight). Study and many healing doctors have shown that when you fast for a good period of time, the body goes into "Healing and ant-aging process" where the old/bad cells are destroyed and new ones are created. Fasting starves cancer cells and boost ani-body. Fasting promotes Growth Hormone and boosts your metabolic system. These are the ones that I'm experimenting and see the result. Days that I do 24hours fast, I feel the best, because I get a surge of GH during sleep to rebuild my body. I do eat lots of fresh food to get my source of food and vitamins and minerals but fasting HELPS to stay in ketosis a lot more than if you 3-4 times a day. I personally don't care for the type of fasting people do that don't eat for 10 days but water. Those can have serious side effects, like having too much toxin from fat coming back to blood stream where the liver and kidney can't release out of the body fast enough. That happened to a friend who almost died from too much mercury in his blood after a 10 day fast. But Intermittent Fasting has a total different effect on the body. It's like you run for 30 minutes, rest for 10 minutes and do it again, than run for 10 hours straight. :-)
@mostlyKeto
@mostlyKeto 7 лет назад
+Leouise Grech thank you Leouise for sharing your opinion, I know you're trying to help people. Fasting can be overdone, it should never turn into an obsession once the desired weight is reached. I don't need to fast, you're right - since I'm at approx. 8% body-fat I don't want to go too crazy when it comes to longer fasts, but I do really enjoy the occasional 24 hour fast with my girlfriend after a vacation for example. Thank you!

sure, fasting is not essential for most people. A Ketogenic Diet should be enough for you to lose weight long-term, fasting (even just intermittent fasting) could just help you make more progress in less time, especially if you're insulin resistant. There are no 'essential carbohydrates', only protein & fat is essential - your body is able to manufacture whatever glucose it needs. Staying under 20-25g of net carbs/day from mostly vegetables works well for a lot of people on Keto though.

I've always heard that whatever you lose while fasting, you gain right back as soon as you start eating again.
@BenHayat
@BenHayat 7 лет назад
Nicole, it is true ONLY if you go back to "Sugar converted to fat" process, meaning eating more carbs that you can metabolize, if so your body will convert unused sugar to fat and stores it in your mid and hip section. In case of those with type 2 diabetes, this will happen much faster, because they're Insulin Resistant and without fasting and eating carbs again, their insulin stays up LONGER than average person, so all the sugar gets converted to fat, perhaps even gain more weight People like me (T2D) fasting and ketosis is sure way to stay normal. If I go back to carbs and I'll be sick again. BUT for normal people, if you remain in ketosis (even without fasting) you will not gain the weight back, because your insulin level will be low which means no sugar conversion to fat and storing.
@BenHayat
@BenHayat 7 лет назад
Nicole, I was in a rush this morning to cover the second reason that a person "might" gain weight after fast/diet. *IF* you reduce calorie intake during fast and/or diet to a point that your brain detects low calorie as "Starvation", te brain will raise your "SetPoint". Once that's done, the body's metabolic system will shutdown to burn energy to reduce heat. You will feel tired, clod and sleepy most of the time. And at the same time the body goes into "fat Storing" mode than "Fat burning" and you stop losing weight. All these happens to protect muscle breakdown and save your body. However, if you fast (even one meal a day) and eat plenty [good] fat with high octane/calorie (rather from sugar), body will be happy and will boost your metabolism and continues fat burning and most importantly, it will set the "Starvation alarm" on and YOU WILL NOT GAIN WEIGHT. During the day if i feel a bit hungry, I take a spoon of coconut oil or butter and my body gets octane and continue to function and does not shut down. With one meal a day, my body is hot all day and I work out with zero shut down. But during sugar burning I was up and down all day. *Go to ketosis and you stay slim.*
@journeytothinify
@journeytothinify 7 лет назад
Ben Hayat Thank you! That makes more sense. Is it best to eat fat for the first meal and zero carbs (by carbs I mean veggies) once you break your fast?
@journeytothinify
@journeytothinify 7 лет назад
Ben Hayat Thank you so much!! I appreciate you explaining this to us. We've been on Keto 6 weeks now. My Husband is a type 2 diabetic and hasn't needed an insulin shot in 5 weeks! We're not going back to sugar land ever!!
@BenHayat
@BenHayat 7 лет назад
Nicole, me as a T2D, has made it very simple. When a T2D eats, the body will spike according to what was eaten. The more the food has carbs two things will happen: a) The higher the carbs, the higher the insulin *spike* will be. The more fat (less carbs) that spike remains very low. b) The higher the carbs, the higher the insulin "Volume* will be. For a T2D, the combination high spike & volume, means the longer *duration* the insulin will stay up. It is this long *D U R A T I O N* that causes all the problems with gaining weight and insulin resistance. A normal person's insulin drops normally because both sugar and insulin had entered into the cells and were burnt and it's ok. But a T2D's cells are blocked and insulin and sugar can not enter to burn. So the cells are starving and at the same time the blood is full of sugar & insulin. It's a double whammy situation. GOOD NEWS for T2D: There is a new fuel source instead of sugar and your body makes it for free and you don't need to buy it :-) it's called KETON. :-) Eat MCT or coconut oil to accelerate keton generation and stay clear from Carbs. So to answer your question, for fast breaking, eat good fat and green vegetables. You feel satisfied quickly. *IF* you crash after you eat,that means a *BIG INSULIN SPIKE* , then cut back on the amount in next meal. That happened to me. I didn't eat carbs but I ate A LOT and my insulin jumped high. Hope this helps! ..Ben

Exactly, go Keto for 30 days minimum before starting fasting protocols. This will make it 99% easier. Then go back to Keto after the fast. Keto allows weight loss (fat 92%) with virtually no muscle loss (8%). Water fasting also miraculously causes lean mass gains after resuming eating. Sugar and carbs are for suckers who do not know any better..
