The story of Lamar Odom is truly complicated when you look at his life in its entirety. But when you solely look at him as a basketball player, it's then you understand how gifted he was and how much he meant to the NBA and its point forward position. He was the #1 rated player in high school, taking home the Parade National Player of the Year award in a stacked 97 class. He went on to become a McDonald's all American and could've even made the jump straight to the NBA.
He had some bumps in the road early, losing his scholarship to UNLV for reasons mentioned in the video and landed at Rhode Island, where he became a star and parlayed that into a top 4 pick in the draft after just one season.
More bumps in the road continued to follow Odom, as his career became a roller coaster until it finally came to an end at just 33 years old.

Him balling in Miami was his coming out party in my opinon. Yea he was good on the clips. But that year wade was a rookie. Eddie jones was just finishing his prime. Rookie UD. There was alot of Forwards who could handle the ball well over the years, Even though Bird was an outstanding passer and a career 6.3 Assist per game.....I think Scottie Pippen was truly the first Point forward in the NBA.....His tenacious full court defense and him actually bringing the ball up the court setting up the offense was truly a landmark in NBA Basketball!!!!

I agree. I would say the Scottie Pippen blueprint is what allows teams to start Combo Guards at point guards. For example you pair Steph with Draymond, Kobe with Odom, Kyrie or Dwade with Lebron

The tipping point for him was his son dying from SIDS in 2006. He was already shaky but that pushed him over the edge. Drugs aside, he wound up running around with Khloe. He certainly had the talent and skill to possibly become a HOFer. The pecking order with the Lakers sort of hurt him. He and Pau Gasol certainly needed more touches.

What hurt Lamar Odom was when the Lakers attempted to trade him to Dallas he was one of those type of players that needed hard leadership and responded to hard leadership he's going as far as to say so when it came to him and Kobe Bryant's relationship remember he grew up without a father and sometimes those type of men gravitate towards men who can provide that type of leadership he never shrunk from Kobe's leadership

If there ever was a unicorn?...this dude was that...he had the skill set to be one of the greatest..no lie...I understand that environment has a lot to do with how you deal with life..but I honestly think LO was a damn good player when he was motivated,more importantly..healthy..his jumper was..meh...but everything else? ...if he was more focused?..... could've been a hall of famer..I pray he keeps on trying to be sober and happy.. salute to LO man...

Yeah, Lamar is a tricky one for me. Like you, I think he had a REALLY good NBA career. He played well everywhere he went, won 6th man of the year once and was a VERY important piece on a team that won two titles. So, I'm not necessarily sure his growth was stunted as a player. Now, he had such insane talent, and he didn't quite reach his full potential, but he was a really good and useful NBA player for a long time - nothing even close to resembling a bust, so I'm not sure I'd say his growth was stunted.

Lamar Odom in today’s game is Ben Simmons with a jumper but not as good of a defender. Definitely not a bust but if it hadn’t been for addiction and a different mental mindset he’s a borderline HOFer.

Rasheed definitely could have been better on offense but I think we’re people go wrong criticizing Rasheed is he made teams contenders and champions He was a top defensive player right there with Duncan , Kg and Jermaine O’Neal and I’d say switched better on defense that Duncan so he was a top 5 power forward defensively and top 10 power forward offensively and he and dirk were the only all star caliber power forwards shooting threes which spaced the floor and allowed other players to eat. On offense he just wasn’t mentally suited to be a number 1 option he was better suited as a 2nd or 3rd option. Many people say although Ben Wallace got more blocks and rebounds that Rasheed was the best all around individual and team defender on the Detroit team. He switched better and players more disciplined. He didn’t try to block everything he stayed down and and came up with a lot of steals and blocks playing more disciplined then Ben did and Rasheed nightly had to guard the better post players cause other then shaq there weren’t many Dominant centers in the league but the 4 spot was loaded and Rasheed switched better onto wings and guards. I love Sheed and I’ll take his career exactly as it was underrated TWO WAY player he played winning basketball that translated into wins for every team he played on.

I remember hearing that Odom didn’t want the Clippers to draft him but that was over shadowed by Steve Francis’s demands. Both players in that draft weren’t happy from the start. B. Davis wanted to go to the Clippers but that didn’t happen either. So basically three players all having team preferences from the start. E. Brand to Chicago, S. Marion to Vancouver, S. Francis to Charlotte, B. Davis to Clippers, R. Hamilton to Toronto and L. Odom to Minnesota. That’s how that draft should and would have worked out for everyone.

I really like this video. Most videos just go on and on about all are these negative storylines like nobody else has ever committed sin in or fallen ever in their life... It seems like the man with the most sin always cast the first stone. I'm really proud of this guy for going from where he was to basketball and going from where he ended up to where he is now. It takes a lot a lot a lot to make choices that will better your life. Anyone can say that it's easy looking through the window but we are all different and when it comes to mentally pushing yourself to be motivated to have strength and perseverance to pick yourself back up especially when you're in the spotlight and everybody wants to put you down and talk about you. It takes a lot. To get through that alone is a major battle and so many people don't give him credit because they can't see past that. Ultimately it ain't about what anybody else can see past it's about what he can see past physically and mentally. I wish nothing for the best for Lamar Odom and I respect any human being that can pick themselves up no matter how hard the fall. To come back that much better that much stronger and that much more happy in life. At the end of our life none of anything else matters other than our actions. Not what we achieved but how. Not what we said. But to who and in what way. How we treat ourselves. What choices we make. And the way we engage with others...and react to the good and bad in our path. Every man's level of success is based on what he perceives it to be. He still made a difference and that I know changed many people's lives. Not many can say that. I appreciate the time he did give and I commend his accomplishments. Success is success. When a president runs a great 4 year term- is his success measured through those 4 years? ...Or the years it took him to get there.. and the years that follow? Or only the time he was president? How it ended wasn't up to us. I know he'll end up where he is meant to be. Only an ignorant individual would place energy into taking that success and those accomplishments away from another.

Even though he achieved success with the Lakers, I believe he would have been a better player if the Heat kept him during the Shaq trade. Pat Riley & Mickey Arison run a discipline, and very tight ship. Which, I believe, would've helped his growth in the long run along with D-Wade.

If he would have been drafted to the other LA team he would have been a Hall of Famer. He needed hard leadership. Kobe Bryant provided that to him later in his career.

What great memories I had of Lamar Odom; I just finished high school in NYC at the same time Odom was rising at Christ the King (Khalid Reeves anybody!) and he was the MAN at that school. Being a huge UConn fan (and Big East fan) I was so hoping he would commit to UConn, or (at the minimum) another Big East school (I know St. Johns was hot for Lamar too). I know he wound up in Rhode Island with Jim Harrick, who wasn't exactly known to run the cleanest of programs. Unfulfilled potential yes, stunted yes, bust.........no. Was that Erick Barkley at the 4:37 mark?

Odom was a beautifully skilled big man. Unfortunately he needed to be in college for 4 years with a coach who cared enough to get him counseling for his issues. That would have refined his game AND possibly given him the coping skills to survive as an adult.
