This is a nice new little form factor the Pi Foundation are coming out with. I do hope someone produces an IO board with a few low profile connectors to make building a handheld unit easy. Ideally I would be looking for connectors to screens, an amplifier so you could just connect some speakers and battery/charging ports alongside options for connecting controller circuits. I still think that to progress the Pi Foundation needs to move away from the old Broadcom chips for something with a bit more graphical power as they have previously stated that the Pi 4 is as powerful as they can get on the current processing node.
It really depends on the emulator optimization and driver support. Pi5 is years away too. If anything I’ll be looking toward Odroid n2+ support for Dreamcast.
@@TheDrakanMaster124 GameCube will be a likely yes. I doubt ps2 emulation will be an option until the pi6. You are better off getting a PC and using PCSX2 with Launchbox.
@@AnonymousGentooman maybe on the pc. Definitely not on a arm processor. Even snapdragon 855/865 can’t run ps2 games well because of proper emulation support on android. GameCube emulation is doable on snapdragon and Nvidia shield. Pi4 can’t and Odroid n2+ can’t really either.
Good to see that you got your hands on this board. Thanks for running it through the different games. My order for my compute module is on back order until February 2021 🤨. I believe that the number of custom I/O boards designed and manufactured by the Maker Community will be ready by March. CM 4 is seriously awesome... You can build handhelds, actually low end but usable laptops or tablets. 2 in 1 powered by raspberry pi would be awesome... It could be cheaper than Surfaces and windows 2 in 1 or iPads(with keyboards) but still provide more functionality than the android ones.
@@iamnotyourbuddyGUY Cheap out on what exactly? Their built quality is second to none considering the competitors of their price range. I have a RG350M and it is nothing but quality. If you are referring to the chipsets they are using, yes, they are using underpowered chipsets, thats why i would like to have CM4 powered metal shell Anbernic handheld. It would be a no brainer for most of retro handheld enthusiasts, including me.
@Justin Beaird i agree with you about the placement of the shoulder buttons, but in other aspects, Anbernic is making great handhelds for the price. I am not a fanboy, but they are keeping other brands to make better handhelds over time, and thats a good thing for all of us. Look at Powkiddy for example, they are not making their new models as low quality as they used to make. Thats a good thing to consider in my book.
Thanks a lot for your video. It was a really cool introduction to the CM4. I am a fan of your channel and, as an observation, sound here has awesome quality, but volume is a little low (I think it varies with each RU-vid channel). I wuold like to thank you for your tutorials. I had been away from gaming for many years and the last few months I could learn how to use the Pi 4 with Batocera, Retropie, to configure the PS3 controller, to be updated with the latest news in a clear, direct and inspired way. I also have a few doubts: what is the most efficient way to emulate GameCube on the Pi 4? Maybe with Flamemonkapie or other system? I also would like to learn about your best configs for the Dolphin and PPSSPP in order to run the games at its best. These consoles and others, like NDS (which has been the only reason that makes me prefer Retropie over the beautiful Batocera with its NextGeneration Theme), they are great consoles that so many of us didn't even know. And, finally, have you overclocked your Pi 4 8GB at 2.3 GHz yet? Would you share with us how? Can Gamecube nice emulation be achieved with this level of overclocking? Anyway, it's been a lot so far! Thanks a million for your inspiring tech videos for so long! Just keep up your awesome work!

Love this. Since getting my Piboy. I am loving raspberry pie. And I can't wait until hand helps start using this. It will be nice to have a slim small powerful hand held gaming raspberry unit.
If this thing has Final Fantasy, i'm building one. Not only is this amazing that we can play all of these games on a single system..... But it is also amazing that in 20 years we will be playing current and future gen consoles on yet another emulator
Nice. Glad I've held off buying a handheld emulator. I was close to buying an RG350m, but I would prefer to have a handheld using Retropie as the OS. I hope they make one with a screen a little bigger than 3.5.
Cannot wait to see the handhelds that will come out with this board. Hopefully there are some good options that offer a 4:3 screen of good quality. The RP2 right now I love, but took a ton of work to setup Pegasus and get a good overall experience. Something running on this board with Emulation Station or a less involved setup than Android + Pegasus would be a big selling point for me.
Thanks for the video. It looks like the CM4 with the i/o board, is double the size of the normal Pi 4, so for making your own handheld, I think the Pi 4 is a better option. Offcourse, if you can make you own custom pcb... Do you still think we're getting these CM4 horizontal handhelds you talked about, this year ?

I am not sure I understand: to make a handheld you need to deal with 2x100 pins high density connectors, and the breakout board is as big as my VHS; so that will be an interesting task for sure. I see more value in desoldering the connectors from a regular Pi4 to make it flat; it takes less efforts for sure; unless the module provide a better and smaller breakout board, or you have the ability to deal with such dense small connectors.
I want one of these in side a mouse to have a mouse that can have a power input, display output, and a keyboard out put. You can put a mini 3.5 inch display in front of the mouse and a mini keyboard with a built in battery, bam a form factor that you can go anywhere with and play Minecraft with
How's Goldeneye run on it? Also, when you show something running MvC2, you really ought to do a three-character hyper combo. All the sprites on the screen kill the framerate in that game on a lot of these SBCs.
I'd like to investigate uses of the CM4, but all of the base RPi products (NOT KITS) are hard to come by right now unless you want to pay somewhat more than MSRP. Hopefully their supply chains will catch up after the end of the holiday rush.
Forgot to mention a hope/prediction - the CM4 matched with a suitable I/O board, flat screen, keyboard and case would make a nice Modular/Repairable laptop. OTOH maybe waiting for a CM5 with PCIe v3 x4 would be better :-) .......
Power of 5 or 12 volts and one step down on board. That would have been good idea for the 4B model. 5.1 volt 3 amps (15 W) brings some power supplies to the limit. No problem with PD and 9 (27 W) or 12 volts (max. 36W).

While it sucks that the sodimm slot is no longer a thing, it did add a lot of thickness to the overall assembly. Plus, you couldn't mount anything to it, due to how it had to latch into place. I think the change is for the better... Now if the new connector is easy to find, that is another story altogether.
I'm experimenting with "Flight Gear" on the RPi 4/8. It is not spectacular, but so far so good. I can't believe the RPi can run a flight sim of any kind, (other than Linux Air Combat.) Once Vulcan gets worked out, with some tweaking on the sim itself, I think it should be perfectly playable for any normal single engine plane. Maybe not at ultra high resolution, but still... I got 31-38fps on a ten minute flight this morning. That's not awful.
Not sure why Raspberry would gear their marketing on this to just industrial applications. This is probably the most versatile iteration of the Pi. Assuming they keep the same form factor for future modules all you would need to do is switch to the new module and you are up and running. Come out with upgraded IO boards and again you are all set. Think this version has the likelihood of developing it's own cult following.
