The director of Joker 2 actually said it wasn't going to be a musical but that music was going to be important to the movie, so I guess we'll see what he meant by that when the movie comes out
I’m a big musical theater person. I love it. It’s a great community to be in, there’s a lot of opportunities and talents to develop. Musical movies are a tricky thing, because it’s just such a different format. Film has moved very far away from the theater style it originated from. The biggest thing is suspension of disbelief. On a stage, the performers are right there. You can see them going on and off and moving the stage around and they take their bows at the end. Movies are more realistic, inherently, with close up shots and intimate moments and with a real wall between it and the audience. So while a musical can be bombastic and earnest, that stuff struggles to come across in a movie. This leads to musical movies trying to make themselves more realistic, which in my opinion, they shouldn’t be doing. Older musical movies are really good about integrating songs because they barely acknowledge that it’s strange, because to them it’s not. Overall, some people are musical people and some people aren’t. It really depends on how you view sincerity and the ability to tell an emotional story without getting embarrassed. It takes a certain type of person to be able to get up on stage and perform in front of a crowd of mostly strangers. I like a lot of musical movies, they make the stories more accessible, but I’ll always prefer seeing the full shows. TL;DR movies are different from musicals and that makes musical films tricky. Musicals aren’t for everyone, but they’re really fun and if you aren’t sure, check one out!
i. love. MUSICALS! Musicals are one of the things that still keep me going, i've seen most of the big famous ones, and i've even seen smaller ones. I'm super excited for more musical movies because i feel they are awesome.

I'm not a musical fan.But I watch the Wonka film. And for some reason I enjoyed it.I would say it was underrated.Tbh,I'm more excited for the Joker 2 film. Also,I think that Todd Phillip mentioned the musical scenes would take place in his head.
I find that the people that hate musicals are eiher, like you said stereotypical masculine men or pick me girls and i find it so funny that all the people that say they hate musicals will then go on TikTok and lipsync to Hamilton and won't even know 😂😂
As a white male who grew up in a small town in Ohio, I agree with a lot of what you laid out here. Musicals and theater in general are hit or miss for me, and I think it’s definitely in part because of negative values in my social environment growing up. I used to find a lot of musicals too earnest in a way that was off-putting to me, but in recent years I have grown to appreciate them a lot more as I become more confident in my own media tastes. Love the video : )
Something I realized along this discourse is that I don't like MOST musicals, the same way I don't like MOST movies, but the ones that do it well, shine brilliantly to me, ya dig? It took most of my life thus far to realize I like musicals even when I super don't like most musicals.
Knowing Jord i probably shouldn't have expected this to be some critical deep dive into the meaning of musicals and why some are good and some feel pretty pointless... Thas my bad Still can't tell if this video is satire lol Just never occurred to me that some people can feel threatened by adding singing and dancing to a movie. I think everyone can enjoy a good musical like for example the greatest showman, old disney classics like the lion king and little mermaid, grease and la la land, the prince of egypt. You don't see people criticizing these movies I think cuz most of them are considered family movies, and the singing and dancing characters are presented in a setting that makes sense for characters to sing and dance. You know, an exaggerated reality or fantasy world. So my thought is that when people see this character in a world that's more grounded, more "real" in the sense that these characters originate from a reality where people don't just break into song. I think that's the best way i can put it. And that's probably why movies like mean girls, the matilda remake and even some disney live action remakes miss the mark, cuz the setting doesn't suggest the possibility or necessity of characters singing. Speaking of necessity, that's another reason I think musicals might fail to nail the point. Most often the reason for a character to start singing is because their feelings (struggles, ambitions, affections) at that given point are just too intense to put into speech. Song is used to exaggerate and expression when talking can't. This is probably why some songs in musicals tend to feel bland and unnecessary, there are no intense emotions to justify a song. This I could imagine being a challenge with the joker movie, as most characters within this franchise aren't exactly the most emotionally expressive bunch. And if they are, it tends to be very surface leveled I think. In that sense I guess there might be something to this idea of masculinity and feeling threatened. I hadn't thought of it, but it might just be hard to imagine this badass, stone cold, all business, emotionally devoid character singing and dancing. We just don't expect these characters to express intense emotions. They're men, they're not supposed to struggle or express affection. They might express ambition or evil intent, but again, often very surface leveled. I think these comments might just come from a place of liking a movie but not for its character development lol All in all I think it can be done well, but it's gonna be tricky. No one's gonna be happy about a #relatable "i want" song coming from the joker. But if this movie went a darker route, expressed some of the more complex and disturbing aspects of the joker. Honestly I can only really imagine one or two good songs coming out of this, but idk. We'll see ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Thanks for reading lol Went in a little too deep there Edit: I'm not done haha A great example of musical storytelling that I think alot of people can follow is Hamilton. Now granted, it's not really a movie and has a whole different structure, but still you don't really think of it as traditionally musical. Characters don't just sing to express emotions, they sing to exaggerate conflict, they sing to simplify story beats, heck they sing the whole god damn time and it just works to tell the story. It's not always overly emotional, it's comedic, it's action, it's grounded. It just feels like you're watching people express very basic things most of the time, but through song. The reason this works I think is ofc the style of music, it's rap... It's cool, not exaggerated, not dramatic, very memey. I could see batman spittin a few verses like that lol But also, it works because it doesn't try to dramatize things that aren't dramatic. Characters are level-headed as they sing about how they're gonna outmaneuver the british or win a political cabinet (yes that happens and it's riveting). Point is, you can make badass musicals
Started watching your channel because of gay space rocks but loving your videos on different topics! Love musicals so much- Count of Monte Cristo is my all time fav!
I love musicals, but icl there is something slightly off-putting to me when it's a movie- idk just the way they burst into song and start dancing feels so unnatural compared to when it's on stage
