The CONTROVERSIAL History of the Kingston Public Hospital in Jamaica
Established in 1776, KPH holds the title of the oldest public hospital in Jamaica, and its historical significance extends to the wider Caribbean region.
While there are claims of older hospitals in the Caribbean, such as the Public Hospital in Port of Spain, Trinidad, and the Barbados general hospital, their exact founding dates are debated because I found information that the hospital in trinidad was founded in 1858 and Barbados in 1844 and If these hospitals were indeed founded in the 1800s, KPH's founding in 1776 would make it potentially the oldest established hospital in the Caribbean.
Beyond the Caribbean, KPH's age also places it among the earliest hospitals in the Western Hemisphere. For context, the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, USA, was established in 1751, making it the oldest established hospital in the region, therefore with kph being established in 1776 that would make it second oldest.

KPH used to have the best oncologists in Jamaica during the 1970s. I'd love to see this hospital as well as all hospitals in Jamaica be equipped with the best technological advancement and health care workers in the hemisphere! YES WE CAN BE!!👍🙏

That hospital history sound nice nuh rhatid. But me born a me yaad up a country. Me Granny di the honors, as well as for many other births in the district. She bury me "navel string" and plant a coconut tree on it. The tree is still around today and so am I. Yes 1956. Then she put me on a strict diet of arrow root porridge, sussumba (gully bean), monthly "wash-out" (senna &castor oil) Didn't see a medical doctor until 1970....a requirem3ent for entrance to Dinthill. Thanks Granny. I wish I had written down all your remedies. BTW Granny: Remember those times when I ran away from a beating and you said, "If yuh run from yahso to Oyo, me a go ketch yuh"? Well, I finally figured out where the hell Oyo is. LOL! And in conclusion, you were right: One cannot trust Bakra. LOL!

As a Jubilee baby, I’d say in the 80s & 90s it was the best maternal hospital based on statistics & reviews. To this day, if you’re injured anywhere else namely Andrew’s Memorial, Spanish Town General or UHWI, you’re transferred to the KPH bcuz it has some of the best doctors in Jamaica. Don’t argue with me bcuz as much you guys don’t like down there, it’s true. I believe I would give it 8/10 given the skilled doctors & free health care for the most part (not sure 100% what it entails). Also, it is understaffed, & needs a lot of equipment & beds etc to enhance its effectiveness. I personally dislike how the gov let it get run down so to speak. I believe that more can be done for this hospital given how many people it has to offer health care & how many it has catered to in the past. We all know that Kingston is very overpopulated bcuz everyone wants to live in the city. They need to raise the nurses & doctors pay so that they will stay & give back into their country & not go elsewhere. Our country has many talented doctors, nurses, surgeons etc but they don’t have all the facilities to work with & they get overwhelmed & flea the country.

As a nurse working overseas, KPH is not subpar, I agree we are not perfect as a nation but who is. Private healthcare is managed differently from public, not only in Jamaica. So the customer service and 'care' will be different from that of which you would have received from Andrews. Yes there needs to be upgrade because medicine is never constant and needs more staff however some of the most brilliant healthcare workers work at that hospital.
