Is fruit good for you? The answer seems obvious, right? Well, I have an opinion that goes against conventional wisdom based on years of patient research (and others' research). So today, I'm going to answer the criticisms head-on. On this episode of The Dr. Gundry Podcast, you'll learn why an apple a day ISN'T actually the best option to keep the doctor away, the different types of sugars and how they affect the body, the BEST fruits you should eat (and how much), and why a high-fruit diet ISN'T the best way to help your body heal.

Fruits in moderation is a good option. I followed more than 15 doctors the last 10 years, bought more than 30 books on nutrition and health, examined and experimented many types of diets and ironically most doctors, to each their own theories and experiences , contradict themselves! My humble advice is eat a whole spectrum of healthy foods in moderation and most importantly listen to you body and take note how certain foods react to you body. If some particular foods make you feel bad or irritate you just get rid of it...listen to your body ! , each person is unique when it comes to digestion of foods. Tc

i agree completely. there are credible doctors on youtube that are honest and very clear about their beliefs and it’s difficult to determine which are correct. believing in only one doctor is dangerous. some eat only fruit, some eat wheat, some are against fruit and wheat. i’m sure there are benefits to all types of diets but even with all the research it’s very unclear what we as humans are supposed to eat. unfortunately by the time we know what hurts us, the damage is done. not knowing what hurts one person, is scary because how does that person know what to avoid unless it has an immediate negative reaction. as hunters/gatherers all food was scarse and back then it was hard to over eat any type of food. contrary to that, some areas of the world had limits types of food and people had to consume a lot of only few foods. we come from central italy and fruits, potatoes, wheat, and some corn were in abundance because my family and others would farm these foods and 70 years of age was the let’s say the average life span. your conclusion seems to be the most accurate because not one doctor or nutritionist has all the correct answers. people are different, foods are different, and all the reactions are different. in my humble opinion, NOT doing damage is the most important thing you can do to live as long as “you” can live, so “your” body can do what it can possibly do. if you were to land on earth from a galaxy far away, you’d see humans and animals eating a vast variety of foods!that grow in the ground, and on plants. nothing comes in a bag or box. you mentioned “healthy” foods in moderation, “healthy” as in our bodies know what to do with it because it grew naturally. God help us!

Dr Gundry is such un underrated doctor. Everything that he says in the plant paradox is 100% correct. No other 'online' doctor talks about it except for Dr. Gundry. Excellent presentation! Out of all the "healthy eating" books I've read, your "Plant Paradox" has had the biggest impact and has changed my diet forever. Not only do I avoid fruit (save berries), but my 8 yr old son hasn't had a fruit or soda drink for years. He's learned to be happy with H2O. Keep preaching this, Dr. Gundry! Many more people need to hear the message, "Give Fruit the Boot"!

This was in your book: Shop for fruit in season. Fruit contain fewer lectins when ripe, so eating apples, berries, and other lectin-containing fruits at the peak of ripeness helps minimize your lectin consumption. SO fruit or no fruit??

Dr Gundry, Your latest podcasts that you have been doing are incredible! Full of great teaching. I love that you have moved on from the Corona Virus. You did great podcasts on that subject. I am glad you are moving forward. I have recently become more educated by you about triglycerides and how to lower them. Mine are good around 80, but since you have said that yours is around 30, I want to know how to get closer to 30. For me, I think my problem has been snacking on chips. My wife, who does not follow the program always has chips around and I tend to get weak and end up grabbing them and snacking on them. I love your podcasts! Keep them coming.

Excellent. I think it helps to approach everything regarding health with no assumptions, pre-conditions or hard line opinions. I mean, yes, we all love the foods that we love and tend to be protective. I love organic, coffee (espresso no cream/sugar). Right now the science supports it as healthy but if they find out otherwise, I'll probably stop drinking it. One thing I know for sure, when you get sick, it's amazing how quick you'll start listening to the science. At one point, I could hardly get out of bed I was so inflamed and racked with pain from Arthritis. I've listened to and followed Dr Gundry's advice for several years now and no longer deal with RA. But to his point, I had to cut out all sugars; and yes, even fruits. It sucks. hahaa. Of course, there were more foods I eliminated and plenty that I added. Complicated protocol actually, but the cool thing is - I'm healthy now. It all worked. No meds. I'm in better shape at 63 than when I was 36. Also, my wife no longer drinks fruit smoothies because it caused serious spikes in her sugar levels. So I find this information very credible, experientially. Thank you!

PP

I have to trick my wife to watch this. She bring yet again all the fruit to our household. Apples, grapes, bananas. And she watched once upon a time all the good advises, we have the Longevity Paradox in our bookshelf, and Ketotarian by Dr.Cole. Now in the COVID stress she forgot all the wisdom, and brings the fructose back home. It would be of interest to have a table of just when a specific berry is "in season." I eat only raspberries, blackberries, strawberries. She bring grapes, and like zombie, I cannot resist to eat them.

interesting points, however i disagree, we are attracted to fruit because its human food. what species isnt attracted to and persuaded to eat its species specific food. comparing fruit to a chocolate bar is a bit much, one has fibre, vitamins, minerals. before mastery of fire, fruit would have been our primary source of fuel for millions of years. you quote the bluezone, they eat a high carbohydrate diet with lots of veggies. fruit is a carbohydrate thats low in fat. diabetes is a problem with excess fat in the blood stream, if it was a problem of sugar, then people eating a low fat high carbohydrate diet wouldnt be reversing their type 2 diabetes but they do, as dr neal Bernard has been proving for years, the okinawans eat a diet of 80% sugar from sweet potatoes . if people are loading up on fat then carbohydrates aren't going to effectively enter the blood stream effectively. great apes gain weight during fruit seasons...is irrelevant. obesity isnt caused because people are spending their days at the fruit isle, its caused because people are consuming excess amounts of animal products, vegetable oils and processed food.

This was another wonderful podcast. I've been on PP over 2 years. I am VERY careful regarding what I eat (no fruit, minimal pastured meat only, avoid endocrine disruptors, comply 100% with yes/no list). I just got lab results after 2 years on the program and my A1C is still at 5.7 after 2 years. Total CH was 300! Doctor wants me on statins but I refuse because of side effects. I'm wondering if my sleep apnea is affecting this? My hemoglobin was very low and my doctor advised me to have my C-pap mask checked. I can't sleep longer than 6 hrs/night even with taking time released melatonin, avoid blue light, last meal 4 hours before bed. etc. Can you address sleep and specifically sleep apnea in one of your podcasts? I'm thinking sleep may be affecting my cortisol, lipids, and ultimately my A1C.

I’m going to go on a limb here. I believe we were evolved to have a massive brain to be able to make more food available regardless of our locations. Animals often are bound to an area or they are forced to migrate regularly for food. Some are forced to hibernate when food is scared. We humans can “engineer” or cultivate our own food so that there’s more of it than what Mother Nature has given us. This is to allow us humans to be able to make more babies in more places. Is it always healthy, no it doesn’t have to be. This leads into the second limb that I’m going on. We are not supposed to live pass our childbearing ages. Animals in nature often die out soon after they are done procreating. So, longevity is all a human thing, and that dying early (shall we put it at 70 years old?) due to eating “bad foods” is “by designed”. If the old folks in their 80’s, 90’s and 100’s are no longer pumping out babies, what is their evolution-point to sticking around? Can you think of anything in nature that has this trait? Leaky guts and all the other chronic degenerative diseases like heart disease or diabetes are just what’s expected to happen. We all die in the end at least when an organ fails or when blood vessels pop. Remember, we have also engineered medical interventions to allow the broken bodies to go a few more years. Not always pain free and not without side effects, but it’s there! This leads to my third limb. Some humans have used their large brains to observe that certain foods hurt us, and certain foods help us live longer. Hence we are joined together here in this vid. Those that haven’t made this connection are more likely to die early. In summary, if you eat something that is accumulatively-killing you in 70 years and enjoy it and accept the fact that it’s killing you, eat it! Otherwise, don’t! Thank you for reading my random post.

I "cheat" with cheese or icecream or bread or a bit of pie or cake ( on holidays) only one to three times a week. Candy IS worse than fruit. Processed fruit is bad for you. Fruit juices are bad for you. Glazed doughnuts might not have as much sugar as an apple but it does contain something that a person cannot digest and that is flour. He is correct about the dark chocolate. You eventually loose your craving for candy. Check out what digestion scientists have to say about it. Surprising! Takes just one week to get off of foods you cannot digest. There is no fat in fruit. Turns out that animal fats and certain other fats arr very good for you. Certain vegetables cannot be digested. Find out. You will be glad you did. Just remember to try to cheat occasionally to keep yourself from binging on those things that cannot be digested. Those are the things that are the fat in a person who does not eat a balanced diet. They can eventually stay stored in your body. Yes, if you do eat nothing but fruit, you probably will mess up your digestive system. Eat a balanced diet, you will be glad you do! I am 73 years old and feel great!

Why do people think fruit is bad for you? One reason that excessive added sugar intake is harmful is the negative metabolic effects of fructose when consumed in large amounts. Many people now believe that because added sugars are bad, the same must apply to fruits, which also contain fructose👍

Fruit is only bad for you if its processed and modified with GMO's like added sugar's and changing the way it grows naturally. and even if this is fixed like this guy said only have a little fruit as a special day I reckon like Birthday's or party's but not on a daily basis. 90-100% Dark chocolate is far better as a daily treat in very small portions. On the plus side there's no need to buy excess fruit now save money spend it on DArk chocolate lol

Dr Gundry - I‘d be interested to hear your views on yacon root. I grow yacon root in my garden and really love eating it taw. But is it good for diabetics? I‘ve only found research on yacon sirup which apparently is good for diabetics???

Hey Doc G! Question: What are your thoughts on flavored sparkling water? In particular, I'm a huge fan of Spindrift, which is a sparkling water with small amounts of fruit puree added (for a total of 1 - 3 carbs and 3 - 17 calories per can). Any concern about lectins from trace amounts of puree in this beverage?

Yes! I miss my cherries, watermelon and Honey Crisp apples. Thank you Dr Grundy, so grateful for the constant guidance you and others have given. I would rather be strong and healthy than eating fruit. It was well worth the switch-up.

The fruits you just mentioned have incredible benefits to your internal organs. Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Fruit is very acidic, and high in sugar which is why it rots your teeth, this fact alone should inform you to limit how much fruit you consume. Keep up the good work Dr. G!

5 Months ago i had high triglycerides and also sugar in my blood at a high risk, then a nutritionist/friend recommended me to avoid all fruits and after 3 months both were to a low risk (This does work, avoid nature candy as much as possible)
