I fly about 7-8 times a year and I hate it. It's not even the leg room which is what everyone focuses on, it's the seat width. I'm not even overweight and even when sitting next to another similar sized person you're squeezed in elbow to elbow with them.
@SmallSpoonBrigade

Yes, my shoulders are wider than the space that I'm allowed, I can get the seat belt clipped with plenty to spare, but my shoulders protrude over the arm rests no matter what I do. Shy of breaking my clavicles, I'm not sure what I'd be able to do to fit.

You should be wedged into that seat only 2 weeks after having your leg rebuilt… I swear to god, I’d refuse to sit in anything but 1st class after surgery ever again. (I had a very rare type of bone tumor and had to fly 830 miles away to get my femur rebuilt by people who’d seen these bone tumors before. My leg was double its normal size with over 130 staples in it when I flew home. I’m told I sobbed in pain the entire flight.)

Yo Southwest. All those "extras?" What travelers REALLY want is leg and seat room. Southwest thinks they're reassuring people when they say seat width and legroom are the same. As far as I'm concerned, that means you haven't made any improvements.

@MrCho14
@MrCho14 6 месяцев назад
But SW is a discount airline. Taking out one row of seats adds a few inches to all the other rows but will certainly increase your ticket price. If one wants more legroom, then there are airlines and ticket classes which cost a lot more you can go to. It's not the target audience they're going after.
@bipolarcollie
@bipolarcollie 6 месяцев назад
Bingo
@bipolarcollie
@bipolarcollie 6 месяцев назад
@MrCho14 Most people would pay a bit more for more room. If they removed 6 seats (3 on each side of the aisle) and divide the "lost fare" on each trip by the number of remaining seats, the added cost per ticket isn't much. For example: take out 6 seats and lose $300 on each on one flight. ($300 x 6 = $1,800 Let's say, there are 100 other seats remaining (each with a little more leg room), the $1,800 loss of the 6 removed seats divided by 100 remaining seats would be an additional $18 per seat. And most SW planes have more than 100 seats so it'd be even less.
@MrCho14
@MrCho14 6 месяцев назад
@@bipolarcollie People are very price sensitive at the low end of any customer base which is what SW targets. An extra $15 or $20 could mean they jump to another airline without question. Most important, you gain pretty much no legroom by removing one row of seats when you spread that across the entire plane. I've sat there and done the math. It's around an inch. For someone like me with really long legs, every inch counts so that my knees are pushing against the seat in front of me, but for most it would barely be noticed and they'd be wanting another row removed. Of course, I've only taken SW once in the past 20+ years since I started getting a real income due to many factors (picking seat, longer distances with no layovers) and now always pay for an exit row. SW is doing just fine without customers like me which proves my point that they don't need to make a change.

My travel stress has greatly diminished also, i can plan around city rush hours by stopping to eat or to visit a nice tourist spot. And with so many ways to get discounts at hotels and motels i don't mind spending my baggage fee money on a room and a very nice dinner. Plus i have MY car, not some car im not familiar with, and those savings go into enjoying the stops. I absolutely spend less, and have a more enjoyable experience to boot.

The last time I flew was over 35 years ago when I was just out of college. I'm a big and tall woman and I had an aisle seat. I tried desperately to shift as much of myself as possible away from the man next to me in the center seat to the point of practically leaning into the aisle. And although I apologized profusely to him, he continued to loudly make known to everyone his disgust and anger at having to sit next to me, as though I was purposely trying to take up his space. Finally, he got up and went to speak to one of the flight attendants. I was mortified and in tears at the thought that they might ask me to leave the plane; I just didn't know what to expect. But the attendant very kindly asked me to follow her and she led me to a full row of empty seats on the other side of the plane. I got the entire row to myself for the whole flight. I was very grateful to her for her sensitivity and kindness, but I knew I would never ever fly again.

That was one of JetBlue's claims to fame in the early days ("the most legroom in coach" slogan). It did make them stand out, but not enough. Problem is, almost everyone sorts their flight searches by price, and the cost per seat depends on the number of seats on the plane. People will choose saving an extra $15 in exchange for losing an inch of legroom. So JetBlue changed from 34 inches to the industry standard 32 inches (still more than Spirit or American though).

I've not experienced the seats myself, but it looks like the material on the seats would be something easier to clean and maintain compared to the fabric cushions in place on most planes now. This might make it easier to clean and maintain with a quick wipe down of some disinfectant solution... especially if someone gets sick or has an accident at their seat so the plane can be cleaned and rid of any odors a mess might leave behind... I have a gaming chair with the fake leather material and it's super durable and easy to maintain and still comfortable... maybe it's like the new gaming chairs available now... An easier cabing to clean and maintain makes for less time waiting at the gate for a crew to finish their chores and get the plane ready and back up in the air. The lack of leg space or packing more rows is a different issue and jamming more people into a plane sucks... I'm sure if the airlines could get away with it they would have people standing during the whole flight so they can fit more people in at once...

The key is if the 737-800s/Max8s will still have 175 seats with the new design, or more than 145 seats with the 737-700s/Max7s (what they currently hold now). If the number stays the same, then legroom isn't changing one bit (which is good because the legroom on their 738s is impressive). But if they add more seats, then I'll be concerned. For what it's worth, American's 737-800s/Max8s hold 172 passengers (3 fewer than Southwest), but their planes also have first class and extra legroom seats. So they squeeze their economy seats way more to offer more "premium" seats.

@dancampbell992
@dancampbell992 6 месяцев назад
 That IS NOT correct. The number of exits can and will determine the MAX number of seat that can go on a plane….it doesn’t mean that Southwest or any other carrier ( flying any particular model of 737 ) was at that particular limit for SEATS. The A380 airbus is certified for I believe 880 seats ….although nobody flies it that way. Maximum seating capacity is how many people can evacuate ONE side of an airplane ( that side unbeknownst to the volunteer “passengers”) in a DARK hangar in, I believe, 90 seconds. This applies to all certified airliners

Anyway, I don't see why people are complaining. How can one complain without ever sitting in these seats? If the seats were bus stop benches, maybe they can complain, but they're airline seats that look like airline seats. The next generation of proposed seats has passengers virtually in a standing position (think a seat like a bicycle where your weight is on the seat with your feet touching the floor). I've also seen a rendering of a double-decker seat configuration where you can choose an upper-level or lower-level seat, but if you're on the lower level, the upper level passenger in front of your seat has their butt essentially in your face. I don't fly SWA but I once flew Vueling in Spain. I noticed the seats were very thin; it was like leaning against cardboard. By making the padding thinner, you can get extra rows on board with less legroom. I am pretty certain this is the wave of the future. It makes business sense too; if you can sell six more seats for the same amount of work, you would do it.
