PSA ABOUT BED BUGS because if I can save one person from the horror I experienced my job is done: bed bugs can live up to ten YEARS without feeding and they DO NOT APPEAR during the daytime, only at night and ONLY when a food source (i.e. a person) is sitting on the infested fabric item. So there's no way they'd know bed bugs were in or on it until they were using it.

I don't think anyone would argue that it's ethically better to reuse things, but most people also don't trust a used mattress. I think the concern was more about if it's clean/safe when you don't know the background
@soldiaz7261
@soldiaz7261 Год назад
it's fair game, it's not safe or healthy. couches are literally all porous surfaces and especially in the rain are the best place for bugs, mold, and bacteria to grow/propagate. i imagine you dont have a mattress that was put out, soaking wet on the curb for 12-24 hours, and then slept on it. and a couch is even higher risk of all the concerns from that.

my completely unnecessary opinion on this whole thing: -there's nothing wrong with taking items that are out on the curb as long as it's clear they're up for grabs (don't take a bike that's on the curb, lol). sometimes people throw decent things away, or even intentionally leave things on the curb hoping someone else will take it -use common sense when taking curb items. they may be fine, but there may be problems. i generally stay away from anything soft and/or upholstered due to risks of insects or mold/mildew -if you do decide to take an upholstered item, clean it thoroughly and correctly. you may even want to invest in hiring stanley steemer or another furniture cleaning service -the woman in this tiktok did NOT clean the couch correctly, and this may cause problems down the line -if you look through some of her other videos, it's clear she has the money to spare on getting the couch properly cleaned. i don't know why she didn't -this woman also already had a perfectly good couch that wasn't even a year old. what did she do with it? i don't think we know. i'm a big proponent of reusing items, but the positive environmental and economic impact of picking up a second-hand couch is somewhat negated if it replaces a new one. i hope she gave it away -people are up in arms about classism, and i understand. i grew up lower-middle class in a high-income city and curbside furniture finds were (and still are!) always exciting. salvaging furniture should be normalized because it is both environmentally and economically beneficial. however, the woman who found this couch was not in need of a couch and is not struggling for money. something rubs me the wrong way about how this is a cute quirky thing to her like "omg i found a designer couch everyone come see how lucky i am!!!" when furniture scavenging is a necessity for many people tldr: grabbing furniture off the street is fine, make sure you clean it thoroughly and are aware of risks (pests/mold), if you're replacing furniture give it away instead of throwing it out; the only real problem i have with this whole situation is that she's well-off but didn't care enough to spend money on cleaning it correctly

Second hand furniture at thrift store are usually treated for a few weeks . (IF THE OWNERS CARE) it will be find. People do trade perfectly good furniture alot. Either it's out of style or they don't like the furniture anymore and they trash it. It is a thing. My friend aunt died and left him her house with furniture. He trash everything that he personally didn't like. And I seen people break up and throw out couches that the other person brought them. She not lying about people throwing out furniture at all cause I got a softer couch and trashed my perfectly fine couch but I did announce to fb that if anyone wanted it it would be outside till trash day. Roche Bobois doesn’t have that color on their website, but they are definitely a ritzy enough company that they have a whole acronym for customer’s own material. Custom upholstery is pretty common for manufacturers which build to order. My Mom and I used to drive around fancy Bergen county NJ neighborhoods on large trash pickup day. where i live, picking up furniture left out on street curbs is a super normal thing, people leave their stuff outside their houses all the time and itll usually be gone by later that day!! pretty reliable way of getting nice free stuff, usually its just a product of people moving and not having enough space in their house for everything. then again i live in a pretty poor rural area so everyones always looking for free stuff lol. either way this seems like rich people discourse to me, my broke ass would not turn down a free couch no matter what it's infested with

Only kind of related but there's this house I pass on the way to work that put a couch out by the curb around the time this podcast came out and it is still there as of the day this clip was posted (and there's been quite a few days of rain and storms during that time) 🤢

Picking up this stuff ia super normal in the suburbs that I'm in, but to the rich people replacing their furniture often. There's a another suburb nearby that's pretty wealthy. People just throw out perfectly good flatscreens and furniture because its not the new stuff. Went by a place that had left out 5 flatscreen tvs, they couldn't have been more than 2 years old.

I pick up furniture, refurbish it, and either resell it or keep it and lemme tell you I don’t pick up stuff that has too much cushioning on it i.e. a couch. If I pick up say a wooden chair with a seat cushion I rip all that off and replace it, no need to take chances and it’s not usually an expensive fix either

It’s not privilege. If you have an infestation, you can end up having to throw away everything you have. Bedding, wooden furniture, electronics even. Bedbugs get into everything and are really invasive. Most people do not have the money to replace all their stuff like that. I don’t think it’s bad to want to save someone from that hassle/cost.

Hate to break it to y'all, but wealthy people are genuinely insane and dgaf about how much something cost if they don't want it anymore. Just a few weeks ago, another RU-vidr I watched let everyone know that a chair his assistant bought off Facebook Marketplace for $50 sold at auction at Sotheby's for $85,000. The lady who sold it knew how much it was worth; she just didn't care enough to sell it properly. And that was in LA, where people have big fucking houses; this girl was in NYC. The person who owned it before her probably had a dog that tore up the couch a bit and maybe got mud on it. Not a big deal.

Let's not forget some people can't afford furniture and often will get them from thrift stores (and thrift stores don't clean them either, so if you do get one, please clean it) as someone who grew up poor, this was the norm for my family, grabbing things that were thrown out, cleaning it and giving it new life. Also there are cleaning solutions made specifically to kill and clean up bed bugs.
