@Leaving Blank I was just thinking about how this song represents a New York that doesn't exist anymore (as does the general feel of the opening sequence). This is that kind of feel that was in songs like Rhapsody in Blue and the theme from Molly Dodd (both of which seem to be big inspirations here) and a lot of other songs from the 20th century. I hadn't seen The Critic in many years and just watched this video and was surprised to find that even though it's animated, in its own way it's another film time capsule of old NYC.
Same man, I was busy watching power rangers around the time The Critic was on TV. As an adult, I appreciate it a lot more and wish it had more episodes. I too get a nostalgia feel from this show.
Not only was it bad in 2001; it also doesn’t hold up as well when it moved from ABC to Fox in the 90s. Many of the scenarios were as clever, but they had a sort of wanton randomness more suited to Family Guy than The Critic.
The bit with the usher at the end of the credits could actually vary between episodes. In other ones, the usher has a more normal male voice, and the Critic will usually respond with either "I'm stuck to the chair!" or "But I have nowhere to go." or "Is the snack bar still open?"
@@AvoozlPlays Well, that's because this is from the pilot episode, which had the usher speaking in a cracking teenager voice and Jay's "Get away, zit face!" When the series was greenlit, they came up with the other ending tags for Jay and the usher.
I do, and it was brilliant. (It was the one Matt Groening quit over--inexplicable given that it's one of The Simpsons' strongest eps. It's the one with "they were saying Boo-urns, sir!" and Barney's black and white film, and Hans Moleman's "man getting hit in groin with football.' It's bleeping iconic.)
just thinking here. i have an idea, why don't the comedy central network buy the rights and star showing the critic on their channel. this needs to come back on television.
I always loved the bit of Jay and Marty going to the zoo and seeing the two pandas who look like them amidst all the other gags of his misfortunes, showing that, for all of the things that get him down, his relationship with his son makes it all worthwhile.
The Critic is one of the shows I sort of knew existed at the time it was out in 1994 but was too young to appreciate it back then. The humor of this show sort of has a 90’s simpsons vibe I like.
There’s a reason for that. The show was created by Simpsons showrunners Al Jean and Mike Reiss, who worked on the show in the early to mid-90s. As well as having many of the same writers and crew.
Show was ahead of its time using references people wouldn’t understand now. Just sad it won’t ever be done again, I loved the vibe of this show and the comedy in this show wasn’t too bad unlike most adult comedy shows now.
📺 i truly miss watching the critic. what can I say, I thought it was a really great show to watch. I cannot believe that comedy Central haven't put this back on their Network. I'm also surprised that the fxx network didn't start showing the critic on their channel either. This needs to come back on television again. I am a fan of the show and I'm always going to be. Just waiting for Barnes & Noble to get season 1 and 2 back in stocked. Definitely want to buy it, that's if they get it back in. Some things they do and some things they don't.
