YES she was incredible! She got the queens accent PERFECT it’s uncanny!! Olivia Colman is wonderful as well BUT CLAIRE FOYS ACCENT COULD NOT BE MORE EXACT!!
To be fair, Olivia Colman wasn't given much to work with, in Season 3&4 the focus is mainly on other characters while her's takes a backseat. It's not bad thing by any means, it's just how the story was supposed to go.
Thats the stare of true disgust. "This man who committed treason to both the crown, the public and christianity has the AUDACITY to come into this room and lecture me on humanity!?" Clair Foy OWNS this role, the amount of emotion this women can display without opening her mouth is incredible
@@Henlak- I also how he just walks out of the room so defeated. She wasn't just another person for him to manipulate. He lowered his head and realized was dealing with a Sovereign.
"There is no possibility of my forgiving you, the question is, how on earth can you forgive yourself?!" pushes buzzer, Dismissed.....That cut to the bone
It's both, but you can see how they angle the camera up at the queen making her appear taller, and ever so slightly angle the camera down at him Shrinking him in a way. So much detail is put into the show!
It's the close angle of clair and the camera is ever so slightly rising on his side to make him look smaller. Clair Joy just radiates dominance from her performance
Olivia Colleman did an Amazing job! Visually she looked so much like Queen Elizabeth, but Claire Fox the way she performed, was absolutely outstanding and uncomparable!
If someone does not understand this scene and the motive behind it let me explain: Edward did love Wallis and did value her more than the throne yet he still wanted it. His plan was to abdicate from the throne (give it up) and then his brother would become king. After this Edward would go to Germany and give hitler private and confidential information about Britains armies so that Germany could have more power. Then Germany would overthrow king George VI (Edwards brother) and Edward would be king again. If his plan had worked he would have been king and would have had Wallis as his wife, and everyone here would be speaking German as Britain would no longer exist. He also spoke (in the show) about how he believed that hitler wasn’t a monster and that the only reason that he was against Britain was because we didn’t make friends with him. When people found out about what he had done (this was in the 40’s) he and Wallis were banished to France and weren’t allowed to return to England unless they had permission from the sovereign. I was once sympathetic towards Edward for what had happened until I knew the full story and what he had done and what his plan was. He talks about how his family members are corrupt yet he tried to make a deal with their enemy for the throne and for his wife completely betraying the British people and his family who give him the power that he wanted and acted as his backbone for years, whilst the family members he talks about in a cruel way put the importance of protecting their family and Britain as two of their most important things. If you have Netflix I would recommend watching a documentary series called the house of Windsor which goes into better detail. This episode of the crown also shows some photos of Edward and Wallis in Germany meeting hitler and them all acting far too friendly around each other.
As you WATCH THE KING'S SPEECH, it soon becomes apparent that Edward is essentially being pushed out by the powers that be, though he was allowed to foist on himself and the public that he abdicated "for the women he loved." We see in 1952 when this scene is dated, that Edward and the public still believed that line about abdicating for "the women he loved." But THE KING'S SPEECH gives a more accurate and nuanced interpretation of the events surrounding the abdication. And as events unfolded after abdication, Edward would be found wholly unfit to rule.
Eduard VIII. "Who did more damage to the monarchy, me with my willfullness or you lot with your inhumanity?" Looking at the Windsor Files... he is not one to talk about inhumanity....
I love at 1:30 when she just basically goes ‘Oh no, this is nothing to do with your “humanity”. You not only sympathised with some of the worst people in history, but aided them and played a part in the suffering of hundreds of millions of people. Get out of my sight you overgrown baby’. Classic takedown of a deluded narcissist.
If this how the Queen really felt towards her uncle, we can hardly blame her. Her uncle forced his brother, and subsequently his niece, to take on roles they had not expected. I had often looked at the Queen, wondering how she felt, and what sort of life she might otherwise have had.
I honestly really enjoyed that they mentioned that in the show. Most of us would never think of “what if..?” If we had the chance to be a sovereign. But she wasn’t raised thinking she would be Queen one day - she was just a “normal” (obviously still Royal 😂) girl. And I appreciate that they acknowledged that what her uncle did didn’t just only affect her fathers life, but hers as well. I give the real Queen many thanks and kudos for committing to a life of service as she did. No one is perfect, but I feel like she genuinely cared about doing the “job” well.
Elizabeth would have been queen eventually regardless because Wallis was barren and already 40 when they married so they had no heirs, Elizabeth was always going to get the throne, her father died before her uncle so her father would have never been king, king Edward would have reigned until his death in 1973 and then she would be Queen. She would have had 25 years more to be a mother and live her life but the throne was always hers.
This scene was not about "I hate you because you made me take the throne." "The Crown" deals with that theme frequently and with some good nuance. This scene is "I hate you because you're pretending to be morally superior despite having allied yourself with the actual Hitler." That's why there's so much more vitriol in this scene than in any other.
@@soveryeri2 Her Father died largely cause of the stress he got with the responsibility of the crown that was thrown to him and the stresses of the war. He could of lived much longer and even could of become king even if his brother died later. Part of the reasons Elizabeth does not forgive him is cause in her eyes as well as her mothers and lot of the members of the royal family see Edward as responsible for his death and it was.
Not a single word of this is true. The Duke of Windsor was not punished for supporting naziism, he was punished for marrying American divorcée Wallis Simpson. This show is full of attempts to re-write history and push yet more propaganda about the British royal family. They aren't even called "Windsor", they are a Bavarian family called Saxe-Coburg-Gotha who changed their family name in 1917 to con people into thinking they were a British institution. The entire history of the Windsors is one of deception by a German dynastic family of inbred weirdos who very cleverly conquered Britain around 1840.
No, he didn't. To have gotten what he deserved, she should've killed him. Or had him killed, more likely. He was unfit to live for what he did. She should've sentenced him to death and either danced on his grave or held a lighthearted tea party on it. Fucking Edward--may his name be blotted out.
By watching the Tele series « The Crown » I got to respect and realised how much of a huge responsibility it is to be a Queen « The Queen ». She is so grounded, so down to earth. She never let her role get over her head she was meant to rule.
Even though, like this scene itself, the show is full of re-writing history and propaganda. The Duke of Windsor did not get in trouble for supporting naziism, he got in trouble for marrying American divorcée Wallis Simpson. And "Windsor" isn't even their real name, they're a Bavarian family called "Saxe-Coburg-Gotha", from the German dynasty. They changed their family name in 1917 in order to con people into thinking they were a British institution. Overblown tv dramas like this are just vehicles for further propaganda.
Yeah no the show defenitively romantices the british royalty, this proves the fact that they are not humans, they will do whatever it takes to keep the very little prestige and comodity they have left, its not about morals its about preservation and lets get that right
@@AD-kv9kj Actually some theories are saying that the family used this excuse to put him out of the royal family, real pictures of him visiting some concentration camp and him and his wife being friendly with Hitler are in the end of the episode, it doesn't say that it's true but first the serie is inspired by the life of the royalty and second, this theory could be possibly true.. we don't have to forget that it's a TV Show and not a documentary but it would certainly romantize to only put what we know which is what the royal family wants us to see (btw sorry for my english)
I feel this show would’ve been its best if she stayed in the role. Makeup these days can do wonders! Claire nails the voice, the facial expressions, mannerisms, etc. She is PERFECT.
I also think why they need to change Clairen I think the reason is they want the acting for every age to be effortless thats why they get someone that will fit not just in acting but age as well
One of the best moments in the entire series. While seated, Elizabeth was her uncle's daughter, expressing regret for the predicament. However, when he challenged her, she stood up as the Queen and rebuked him in absolute terms. Stunning drama!
& to think she also played Neil Armstrong’s wife.. Brilliant.. On a side note, she was also getting married, having a baby, & getting divorced during this time..
Same goes for most of these kind of stuff. You cannot hire a new actor for every season so it is better to just have one actor play 10-15 years and then make biger age jump so the next actor can play next 10-15 years.
Claire Foy made a great young 20s, 30s queen. The immediate jump to the next actress was a little overwhelming. It was like a youthful, vibrant 30s queen into the 50s queen. It should have happened far slower than that. Claire Foy and Matt Smith should have had a little more time.
He had some nerve trying to come back into the royal family and have an active part in it after everything he did. He should have been prosecuted for treason
The actual Edward, it seems to me, never had to grow up, nor wanted to. Nor actually ever did. Throughout the 1920’s and 1930’s he partied, flitting around, occasionally did some work, had affairs - nothing that surprising for a man of his temperament and social rank; he took the benefits, but he doesn’t seem to have been so keen on the obligation attached. And to add insult to injury he associated himself with NAZI Germany as a sympathiser (he wasn’t the only one, but he was along with Charles Lindberg were the most prominent) before and after 1936, and the post war denied it. He, post 1936 indulged in currency manipulation all the while crying poor with his brother, George VI; after the war the duchess and he lived at pepper corn rents, and tax free in a series of properties provided by the French Government. By standard measures he didn’t do it tough but appears to have resented how his life turned out. On balance, I think his brother made a much better king than Edward would have done; George seems to have been the better human being too.
Exactly. Edward was always spoiled and selfish. He acted recklessly and wantonly. Edward never cared who he hurt or what risks he took with his own life, despite being heir to the throne. He was weak, he refused to grow up and didn't take responsibility for anything. Even after the abdication, and all that followed, he continually wanted more for himself and Wallis. Reportedly, she was expecting a whole lot more when she ensnared Edward and resented how things worked out. Edward did everything in his power to get Wallis an HRH title, but it was never granted.
This man is such a hypocrite that after he gave France to the Nazis, he lived the rest of his days in Paris. I want everyone to really process that one.
I jus discovered ( through my great grandmother’s memoir) that she and my great grandfather had met the duke and duchess of Windsor and lord and lady Mountbatten during a 1950s garden party!
Elizabeth seemed like she'd let more go unsaid but her uncle just had to get a dig in. I'd like to tnink David gained some respect for her in the manner she dressed him down
Edward was one twisted individual. His sense of personal entitlement, his utter lack of a sense of duty, and his loyalty to a witch of a woman made him who he was.
This is how I want Claire to appear in a cameo for Season 4. After a rather rude argument between her and her son after a first time encounter with Diana, Elizabeth is in her bedroom looking at her own reflection but instead of Olivia it's her younger self, Claire Foy wearing the exact clothes she was wearing during her talk with her grandmother Queen Mary of Teck during the episode "Act of God" in Season 1 and several shots of Buckingham Palace will be seen while faint echoes of their conversation plays. Then it finally ends with Charles leaving the palace in the pitch dark with the faint words "or think, or breathe, or feel, or exist" with both Mary and Elizabeth saying "the better" in unision.
1:43 "But when your book finally came out. Your book! It makes a mockery of even the central tenets of Christianity. There is no possibility of my forgiving you. The question is: how on earth can you forgive yourself?"
most likely, the family would be largely spared (apart from the king and the queen). If Edward had any genuine love, he would have packed the girls away secretly to a remote part of the empire to avoid any problems and get away with the situation to enjoy a few years of reign before being quietly assassinated by the german army. The children would largely be kept locked up in some place for life or quietly killed as well, if this were to theoretically have happened.
@@dan_38 from what i’ve seen, prince Edward never held his family on any kind of high regard, and the relationship was strained beyond mending after what happened with Wallis and his abdication. So if his plan actually did work, the most humane I can see he would’ve done for them is banish them and force them to live in exile from any Nazi territory, and with Nazis growing (as they have taken over Britain and the Commonwealth and , presumably, most other nations in the Alliance and the world in general in this case). It practically means to lock them in a box in probably a run-down third world country. But in reality he’d probably just execute all of those who opposed him in the royal family.
In 'Fatherland', a what-if novel- the former Royal Family were stated to live in exile in Canada, while 'King Edward' & 'Queen Wallis', were installed on the throne of Great Britain...
The veiled point in this scene is not him abdicating nor his wife. She is alluding, without saying directly, that they know of his Nazi sympathies. Look it up. Nonetheless, the acting and writing in the first four seasons were phenomenal.
