The Kennedys had bizarre and extremely inaccurate accent that were untethered to a region and pretty jarring for any American to hear. not to mention their actors didn’t look anything like their historical counterparts. It was pretty clear that the production team didn’t understand American figures, and were unable to make intelligent casting decisions. There are plenty of British actors who could have done their roles better, if they had been given proper direction and more faithful scripting. The difference here is that John Lithgow was quite literally the perfect match, whereas they clearly just arbitrarily chose the Kennedys and put very little thought into it, despite featuring them very prominently.

My all time favourite scene showing acting at its finest was the scene in the episode called Assassins where Churchill slowly realizes his fascination with the pond. At the same time, he becomes aware that the artist painting him actually sees deeper into Churchill than he knows himself, and that terrifies him because he doesn't want to be vulnerable. All this is done through the most subtle facial expression changes and not a lick of dialog. Absolutely brilliant.

John Lithgow is far taller than Churchill was in real life, however I feel like this keeps in line with how our myth of Churchill mixes with the factual man being a larger than life character, a towering figure in history and in the Anglophone ethos.

My favorite part is that he managed to change the melody and tone of his voice to be so British. Americans have a much more monotonous tone and a more stiff melody... his vocal range is incredible as Churchill. He must have practiced a lot. Ask an average American to speak with more melody and tonal variance and they sound like that spongebob meme...

Most great figures in history had a dark side. Ghandi's actions in India may have been great but have you read what he wrote about black people when he was living in South Africa? Lincoln is considered as the President who freed the slaves but he also wrote that it was about winning the war and freeing the slaves was rather less important in his mind. Look at the Pankhursts and you'll find great fighters for women's rights but the rest of their attitudes were in line with the times, they were pretty racist and they were snobs. The point is that these people are all human, they had human traits and human failings.

Having John Lithgow, an American portray Sir Winston Churchill was a great choice by The Crown's production team, as Sir Winston himself had American blood in him, as his mother, Jennie Spencer-Churchill was American, born in Brooklyn, New York. I wonder if many people know that?

0:20 Curious. Churchill did wear a big white scarf to his election count in 1951, but then when the scene shifts to the crowd, they're all standing in Lord North Street, implying Churchill is in Smith Square. But Smith Square is where the Conservative HQ was; Churchill's count was in his constituency at Woodford in Essex.

@theR0NIN
@theR0NIN 7 лет назад
I think they could've done a few simple, extra things to make Lithgow look more like Churchill. Churchill's jaw and eyebrows are iconic, and they didn't seem to change those-- or if they did, not enough. I mean, how do you "give them the essence of Churchill" (speaking of his appearance) without making him look like Churchill? The voice could be closer as well (sometimes he sounds pretty good, other times he just sounds like John Lithgow). However, I'm looking forward to this performance. It'll be interesting to see if Lithgow can make me forget the actor, and experience the role instead.

Churchill did have mobility problems in his later years, especially during the 1950s. By 1951 when he returned as Prime Minister, he already had several minor strokes. On June 23rd 1953, he suffered a massive stroke which paralysed him down one side of his body.

You would think that either Netflix, Sony or Left Bank who produced a biopic, "The Crown", would be more careful. Their portrayal of a recorded event, Winston Churchill's 80th birthday speech is, to say the least, embarrassing. There is an historical documentation of a moment in the life of one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century. The portrait reveal during Westminster's Day Of Majesty is a video news article well known to millions of people. It's remarkable to me, but not surprising, that the producers would choose to exaggerate Winston Churchill's age, condition and temperament so as to make him look feeble, doddering and constantly angry. Shame on them. Shame on anyone who believes what they see and hear in anything that Hollywood has a hand in creating. Hollywood revels in the ability to tear down true historical heroes and raise up modern day weaklings, liars and ne're-do-wells to support a left wing agenda. Wake up. The truth is that neither Netflix, Sony nor Left Bank are in the least bit being careless. Their intent could not be more evident. Their "carelessness" could not be more deliberate. Winston Churchill, despite his shortcomings, was a lion. He was a man with an extraordinary sense of duty. He was a man who is remembered for his strength, service and love for his country. It will always be so.⁸b

These are self contained stories, not historical re-enactments. The episode you have a quarrel with is about the delusions we all carry with us into old age to avoid the pain of self awareness. Shakespeare’s plays took historical persons and events and similarly twisted them into narratives about life in general. He wasn’t attempting historical accuracy with Richard III or Henry V, he was using familiar people and events to tell stories with universal meaning. Storytelling is an art. If you want complete accuracy just watch a newsreel.
