The CSGO Phenomenon I've Been Trying to Prove for YEARS 

The problem with NA rank-up is that matchmaking is ass. When you get matched with players of ranks all over the place, the average rank of the match is much lower than your personal rank, which means that if you win the match you will get very little ELO (or whatever the MM equivalent of that is), but if you lose the match - you will lose a lot of it. So unless you can carry every single match to a win - it would be very hard to rank up. Even if you have like 70% win rate, that still could not be enough to get to a higher rank, because those 30% matches that you lost will have lost you quite a bit of ELO. And even if you do manage to rank up - then your personal rank will be even higher than the rank of the next matches, which means the next rank-up will be even harder. So yes, I guess you could say that getting to NA global is harder, but it's not because of the skill of the players, it's because of the MM system being ass. Now, why NA MM is ass - that I cannot say. My guess would be that there are not enough players and the wait times would be enormous if you had to be matched with similar ranks, that's kinda what I have noticed happening as well in EU in odd times of the day when the player base is low. But most of the times there are enough players for pretty well balanced games. A well balanced game equals well balanced ELO distribution on win/loss, which equals easier rank-up (if you are good enough for it, of course).

That seems to be the case, but CS is one of the most popular ranked games, so how could it possibly not have a big enough playerbase to work? Seems crazy to me.

It sucks, for sure. I climbed from silver 1 back in ~2014 to being Global Elite today, but it was rough. Especially in mid to high gold. At those ranks especially it was constant smurfs, or at the very least, players who shouldn't be so lowly ranked. To get out of those ranks, I basically had to get good enough that *I* was the guy that was shockingly out of place on the leaderboard. It took years. Something about Valve's ELO system is out of whack near the middle of the bell curve for sure. Even now, as a global, I get matched against eagles and DMGs almost every game, and I feel guilty about how badly they get stomped by my 5 stack.

Yes, what you're describing is exactly what is expected when you get matches with players from "all over the rainbow of ranks". If you're, let' s say, a Supreme , and you get matched with MGs, GNs and silvers, the average rank of the match will be around GN-MG. What that means is that since your personal rank is much higher than the average rank of the match, if you win it - you will get very little ELO, but if you lose it - you will lose a lot of ELO. So you have to win a lot of matches to rank up, and if you lose a few - that would be a quick de-rank. On the other hand, if you get a balanced match with, let's say LN-GE players - then the average rank would be around LEM-Supreme, which would mean you'd get much more ELO for a win than in the previous example, while losing will get you a much lower ELO penalty.

@@WilsonCS2 I played vs a 5 stack of 4000 elos in MM. Meanwhile all my teammates are level 3-5 on faceit with 15 average. MM can be so unbalanced its not even funny

no reason to stress over mm rank with how broken the system is currently. Global elite matches feel easier to me than matches around dmg/eagle level do. Maybe because of decayed faceit players. Maybe cs2 will finally put an end to the need of 3rd party services because it will be good tickrate. The game definitely needs it to even out the skill gaps among ranks.

God I wish I spent way more time on this vid to actually do it right. After I posted this my leetify guy reach out and told me they could’ve pulled the numbers for me, so I could’ve had a way bigger sample size and could’ve done actual analysis lol. O well

I think NA is just late to the esports scene- our culture has been dominated by console gaming for a long time. Other scenes such as the smash bros has much more American representation.
