In this episode, our adventure continues as Thomasina Bateman, our determined protagonist, travels to the picturesque village of Bewlay to uncover the secrets of Hob's Barrow.
Thomasina begins her day in her room, checking her to-do list, which reveals that she must meet with Mr. Leonard Shoulder to discuss the excavation of Hob's Barrow. She explores her room and discovers some free matches and a jug of water, which she takes for later use. Venturing out, she interacts with the locals at the inn, but receives a cool reception, particularly from a grumpy old man named Cyril. Thomasina meets a drunkard, Mr. Tillot, who promises information about Mr. Shoulder in exchange for a drink, only to pass out before revealing anything useful.
Thomasina uses her wits to revive Mr. Tillot with the jug of water, but he stumbles off to the toilet, leaving her to investigate his whereabouts. She discovers that the door to the lavatories is suspiciously blocked from the outside, and finds a mysterious glove in the mud. Despite her best efforts, Mr. Tillot remains elusive, prompting Thomasina to call it a night. The next day, Thomasina awakens from disturbing dreams and is determined to track down Mr. Shoulder and solve the mysteries surrounding Hob's Barrow and Mr. Tillot's disappearance.
