It may be that people do not like Connor simply because we fail to relate to him in most ways, not necessarily because of him being native American, but even by stoic archetypal standards, Connor seems unparalleled in his level of focus and lack of emotion. When the game ended, it was very difficult to come to terms with the fact that after 16 years of training, fighting and action, he lived surrounded by death and misery. I always felt that the homestead missions, despite the fact they are supposed to play in a certain order, were the epilogue to how Connor could find hope and embrace. It's interesting that homestead missions are ironically not really a part of the main game, yet are actually the part of the game which allows Connor to grow in ways he hadn't known.

Well, I think Connor is more relatable to autistic people. He may not be so in canon, but he acts in many ways like someone with autism. He's more focused, he see's things without prejudice or distractions, and he's typically seen as dense when in reality he's pretty intelligent. I think the hate is just that people were expecting a second Ezio, when in reality that would never happen. Cause you can't copy a character and make it work.
@smileyent.3055
@smileyent.3055 2 года назад
I think there was a combination of things that made Connor but more soo ac3 infamous. 1) for starters the fan base was not used to having a story with one mc ending within one game, as the Ezio trilogy pampered the players a lot. 2) unlike ac1 where altairs story sort of concluded within the game, Desmond was still alive and the lore just started expanding. Whereas in ac3 the game was ending with Desmond’s rushed and poorly written death 3) Connor’s behaviour was not popular with some as a result of having to contend with the mc seat with his much more charismatic and cunning father ( this is subjective) but Connor pretty much killed a beloved character and didn’t seem to learn anything from him eg. The fact that he kept helping George Washington despite the fact that he ordered the burning of his village. Obvs assassin bias aside we all know that haythams plan made sense and he wasn’t wrong regarding his thoughts on the Templar and assassin’s goals. I ultimately think Connor got given a shit deal , being introduced only when the main story was ending

as much as i love ac3 and connor, i do agree, the homestead missions shows character that should've been in the main story, and i cannot excuse this game from that mistake. it's led so many towards the idea that connor is a bland character when he shows so much in these simple side missions. i'm glad people are warming up to connor and replaying ac3 in today's age, and hopefully, his legacy and impact on the franchise is remembered differently because of this
@Xeno574

@@smileyent.3055 Connor stopped working with Washington when he found out who burnt his village. After finding out, he only helped Washington once, and after helping with the battle, Connor immediately and angrily told him: "Enjoy your victory commander, it'll be the last I deliver you." Afterwards Connor is never seen working with Washington again, but then again the game had entered its final sequences by that point.

I couldn't agree more Aiden. I always felt like Connor got a bad rap and unfairly so and unfairly so. If there is one thing about gamers that sometimes makes me sick to my stomach and please keep in mind I'm speaking as a gamer myself. It is how they can turn against a new game in a series sometimes for the absolute dumbest of reasons. Take the last of us part 2 for example. Many people have said that they didn't like the storyline and can appreciate and respect that but when I hear people saying they won't play it because it's gone all woke (a phrase that is as overused as it is misaplied) or some garbage like that because Ellie happens to be a lesbian frankly just comes off as that person sounding like a stupid child.

People never keep in mind that Ezio’s and Connor’s upbringings had a lot to do with their personalities. Ezio grew up in a renowned, wealthy family. Connor grew up in a tribe and lost his mother at a young age. Connor became hardened over the years, becoming the best warrior his tribe ever had. Meanwhile, Ezio never learned true compassion until his family was executed. His uncle showed him how to be better. Connor had to learn it on his own, with help from friends later. He has a huge heart. Also the Natives at the time didn’t have time to be charismatic or flamboyant or charming.

I've always seen Connor as a Batman kinda guy. He's very focused on his goal, and he just wants/needs to get the job done. He DOES have a personality, he just deals with grief differently than Ezio did. I'm not gonna stand here and say that Ezio is overrated, but Connor is definitely underrated and does not deserve the hate. He's an awesome character and very well-written. You begin to connect to him even more when you realize he's Edward's grandson. Play Black Flag, Freedom Cry, Rogue, AC3 and maybe Unity and Syndicate after cause there are big connections (Shay from Rogue was trained by Achilles and killed Arno's father in Unity; Evie visits Edward's mansion in London where Haytham grew up), then you'll see the whole thing. On a sorta different note: the only thing I complain about in the Kenway Saga is that they had the perfect opportunity to end it in a great note with Arno teaming up with Connor to take down Shay Cormac, and Ubisoft just chose to forget this storyline and have Arno pursue the killer of the father of the girl he loves like the ultimate simp instead of the man who killed his own father. Unity is a love story after all, not a revenge one. But I digress. Connor is my favorite protagonist in the Assassin's Creed franchise.

This makes me realize that even without a trilogy, Connor managed to reach the same conclusion (albeit a different interpretation) as Ezio's in Revelations. That the fight is and will be never over. Which makes it more ironic because even if he achieved a happy 'ending', Ezio basically resigned, giving up decades of efforts, all because he realizes it's pointless. While Connor, despite getting none of what he wanted, presumably spends the rest of his life fighting and hoping for the freedom he always envisioned.

@@julianpradarodriguez7336 I do believe it's both of those reasons, Ezio had fought for decades. He was getting old and tired and wanted to retire soon, but I also believe his letter to his sister in Revelations explain that he was confused and unsure if the fight he was leading was the right one. I believe that in the end, since he couldn't find answer he left it to Desmond to find that answer.

@@MrAnimu because in the end, in Altair's vault, Ezio finally realized his role as a prophet--a messenger. His role, as made clear by Minerva, was a conduit for Desmond. Ezio saw how Altair endeavoured to understand the secrets of the Apple and rebuild the Assassins at the same time. Ezio saw how this pursuit ended up in Altair losing his wife, Maria. His desire ended up with him missing out on spending time with his son and his family. Ezio decides to do things differently. He chose to let go of the pursuit of the Apple, and focus on his family. Though in the end, the Apple never gave up on Ezio. Matters regarding Those Who Came Before still haunted him upon the arrival of Shao Jun.

The other day, I saw a video that explained, at least to me, why his voice actor chose the way he did to portray and voice this character. He was basing his performance off of how Wes Studi does his historical Native American characters talking to white people. A slower, more serious and a slight warning to them that "I'm not someone to be messed with, and I'm not happy with what your people have done to my people, but I will work with you for my own ends". Which made more sense than simply dismissing it as a "horrible, stilted performance"
@502jackal

I can't believe people thought it was horrible performance. It made sense to me the whole time. He's cautious and careful with his words. He's not welcoming and warm because he feels no warmth towards these strangers who are taking away his home, and the hypocrisy he views only makes him colder. The fact that most people only disliked him never made sense because they only compared him to ezio, a noble European with a massively different demon to battle. Conner is one of my favorites n I hope people start to realize what an amazing character he actually is.

He's my favorite performance in the entire series (along with Haytham) and I never get tired hearing his voice. Its rare that a character's essence can be so well portrayed through voice alone but Connor is one of the best examples. He is polite with strangers, humble to those at his side, and direct in speech towards those who play a game with words. The VA combines a soft spoken demeanor with a very purpose driven attitude and a confident strength in his voice. You get it all from writing and vocal delivery alone that he is a man on a mission who values the weight of his words along with his action. The VA should be very proud of his work.

Thanks for sharing that, it makes a lot of sense. Like it was said here, Connor is very direct, he doesn't play games which is exactly what everyone around him is doing. Unfortunately, Connor is a character that had the displeasure of being caught in the ultimate position of being the protagonist of an underwhelming game by most people's standards, following one of the best written characters of the late 2000s/early2010s. While his quiet, reserved, stoic personality doesn't do him any favors, he also was stuck in a far more reserved and morally gray story than Ezio ever had, despite being set during a war in one of the most tumultuous times in history. That's not to say Ezio's story was bad, just that the overall story of AC2, BH, AND Rev was very much a "good vs evil" story, with how uncomplicated a lot of the moral complexity of the characters was shown to be. Again, not worse, just different. Connor's story is very much one of compromises and asking how far pure ideology and hope can get you when there are real people's lives on the line. While Connor is painfully aware of how much of a raw deal the Natives and black people were getting under Colonialist rule, that didn't mean it'd be any better under British rule, and that aligning with people you may not like or agree with can come with certain benefits, even if those benefits come with a cost.

His story is so inspirational and so tragic at the same time, but no matter what happened, no matter what or who he lost, he never gave up his convictions. He never broke. It would have been so easy to have him seek revenge after what happened to his mother, but he only sought justice and sanctuary for his people. That's because Connor had the sense and heart to never think of himself. He only ever wanted the best for his people, and even countless others who were also oppressed. I played AC since the first game. Conner is by far my favorite. Even more than Altair, whom I still like more than Ezio. I usually toss people's hate of Conner and the rest of their opinions in the trash. Thing is Conner is a "warrior with a cause" archetype which makes him unique to others in the series who simply are just at war with the templars over their desire to control the world. He is a more interesting character than even Last of the Mohicans lead Hawkeye though he was probably modeled off him. And he absolutely sells his ability to dominate groups of people in battle. He isn't a Mary sue either with all the tragedy he has to deal with fighting for his people survival. And his beliefs in liberty are admirable as his consistency as his persistence. Conner was probably the last great AC hero the series they had since they killed Desmond before he became the initially planned algamation of all the assassins.

I personally think Conner is the most realistic assassin with the best villains. The reason we love ezio is because we literally had 3 games of his entire life. He was charismatic, well spoken, a good looking man, and the best voice actor in all of the series. He also didn’t have villains to truly test his ideals besides rodrigo so he never looked naive. However Conner is questioned even by his own mentor and doubted. His story is realistic in that Conner was by himself, not every story has a happy ending and in the line of being an assassins your life is never happy. Ezio had the chance to have relationships even after his brothers and fathers deaths. Starts a family etc. Conner literally has to kill his father, and defeat a whole Templar order by himself. Conner goes through so much and legit doesn’t have any support like any assassin before him. He has so much growth in ac3.

While I love Ezio (and he really is one of my favorites) I fell in love with Connor/Ratonhnaké:ton, and I feel for Connor/Ratonhnaké:ton and his story a lot more than Ezio. We were damn lucky we got an Indigenous character, one written with such incredible nuance and care. The first time I played the game and heard the cast speaking in their actual native tongue absolutely delighted me. And Connor/Ratonhnaké:ton has so many of these wonderful micro expressions, and subtle body gestures that I get why a lot of people think of him as a cold-hearted brute. But he's not. He's just deeply uncomfortable in the Colonial world. And that shows. It especially shows in juxtaposition to his time with his blood relatives. I'm so grateful we have Ratonhnaké:ton as a character.

Feels like Ratohnhakét:on might've gotten written into a bit of a stereotype as this stoic native guy for a lot of AC3. Sharing the first few hours with his dad might've cut into some important characterization time he needed. For most of the main story that's the only side we see of him but playing through the homestead missions he's also got this caring, sensitive, awkward and maybe kindof timid side that I wish we saw a bit more of but it's not exactly the personality the average gamer at the time would idolize.

Connor, in my eyes, like Arno, is among the most tragic of the Assassins. everything they fought for and loved was ripped away from them in the end. Only Connor refused to surrender or give up at all. Arno ell into despair several times but Connor was steadfast and resolute to the bitter end

I always found him the most relatable. Have been used all my live, lied to, and most strangers I meet nowadays continue this trend. I can be cold, can seem harsh or hostile, but that’s just because I realize that the same will probably happen again. I help whenever I can, I care, but as soon as I care too much I get stabbed in the back again. So the way he acts, always made sense to me, and his discipline and determination is admirable. I love Edward Kenways humor or the Fry Twins arguing, but Connor will always be my favorite Character in the series. He is such a broken man, but has a huge heart regardless.

I remember back when it came out and I was dissapointed to see so much backlash against Connor for being boring and depressing. He has a lot of heart, and despite all the tragedy, violence, betrayal and loneliness in his life he never loses that and I think the side missions that show his more tender side both with Achillies and the Homestead folk are the best part of the game. I think it's a shame people overlook him and characters similar to him who are more stoic and not as outwardly charismatic or expressive as Ezio or Edward because as someone who can relate to that side of Connor, I really appreciate having characters like him as some form of representation.

I got into the Assassins’s Creed franchise because of the this game, I always thought the series looked interesting before but when I saw the trailers and behind the scenes and stuff like that for this one I was very interested and played the previous games in preparation for this one and I loved each one before and loved 3 the most and it’s still my favorite and Connor has been my favorite since his game came out and he’s still my favorite of all time. I related to him in so many ways that I didn’t with Ezio, don’t get me wrong Ezio is one of the best characters and has some of the best games that are classic by this point, but with Connor I related in our heritage being similar and that he is a very determined person who is driven by the care and love for his family and people and his moments of naivety and stoic and not so talkative nature as well as he’s on his mission not to make friends but to get the job done. So I am right there with you man, Connor has been my favorite Assassin since his game came out and he’s still my favorite and I’ve been hoping for so long for more games and things with him so bad.

I thought his story was sobering after ezios. Obviously we all love ezio no doubt about it but getting someone fresh like Connor and not some ezio copycat was nice. The game in general was fantastic at the time in my opinion definitely had a lot of work put in it I felt like. The snow and seasons was amazing along with the homestead and outfits. Hunting was fun and the navel missions were epic! Fighting as Connor was my favorite, he was advertised as a brute and man was he! It was so cool to just cut through people with that tomahawk. I think the game could have benefited more if it maybe waited till the Xbox one ps4 era so the maps could have been bigger and the crowds more numerous. But then again I felt like AC started going down hill after unity.

Connor in many ways, came to understand all the assassin and templar stuff better than anyone else and had pure intentions, he truly believed in the principles of the creed. Great you showed it but never truly explained his character. 1.) He was actually naive, as he was born in a tribe, he only knows war, hunting, survival and protection of his tribe. Unlike any other assassin, he doesn't understand how society works. of politics, of its people, or how business works... therefore gets attracted to colonies during his 1st visit where Achilles tells him to not trust it and soon realises it's all just front show. 2.) As a tribal man, he watched his all life the protection and caring for his people.,. and After his mother died, protection of his people became his sole reason of living... So he seeks out assassin's ways with help of achilles and HOPE becomes his way as you suggested, thinking it was his obligation. to do so... 3.) Along the way he learns about templars, their ideologies, his father, Charles lee. And in search of hope for protection for his people, meets patriots, who promises him his goal. and working for them he thought he was making a difference to the world, protecting his people. Meanwhile time went and difference started to arise, more and more tribes started taking sides. for their own protection and soon connor realises this when his best friend was brainwashed and he killed him. More time went he managed to kill templars, failed to establish ways with templars, killed his father, learned assassin's amd templars can mever unite, killed Charles lee. and established Homestead... By the time he did this, the war has already came to an end, Achilles was dead... His people had been moved from their land,, The sole reason he started this fight has came to nothing, it was just suffering and suffering, he thought by eliminating templars he would stop their influence for patriots work and get their people freedom but realised the men he trusted were the once responsible for things. and Hence finally after a long battle he accepts the facts in THAT LAST SPEECH ( which is removed from the game ironically.).

Well, Ezio had gave us more time to know him with 3 games and AC Embers. Connor only has one game and a 3 part DLC. The thing is, Connor is a Native American with a lot of mixed feelings towards people in the Colonies since he sorta grew up not to trust them as they came to his tribe's sacred land and attacked his people. In his POV, he joins the Assassins not only to avenge his mother and tribe, but to make his home a better place for everyone after learning that the Templars are the ones who are responsible for most of the problems such as burning his village and causing the Boston Massacre. So his solution is to start the Revolutionary War, but then quit after it became personal to him with Charles Lee and all. He's just a complicated yet understandable character.

When I first played ac3 I was expecting Connor to be what everyone described him as because of the hate. I was surprised to learn how much I liked his character. A man working with those whose methods extremely differed from his own and seeing how people he hoped would help him, to only be used by them. It truly made me see what his character is. A true man of virtue used by others who only wear their virtue on the outside, while they exploit a man for their gain.

Assassins creed games always dealt with a philosophy, and then explored it through thier protagonists with great setting, established view point and nuance. This i felt respected the players and how the spent thier time playing the game, and learning the lore. Through small details spread across the game and even modern world that gave an ugency to push forward completing the next sequence. AC3 is a perfect definition of that. What came before, it made better. Like how the home stead developed and the assassins he recruited. The philosophy, the story telling through other voice actors. All of them excelent which over shadowed Connor. I liked his personality in principle. But the execution. He was outdone by every character in the game. Everyone. I think that is why most people feel him to be a bit off putting. He does not hold to Haytem, Charles lee, not even Thomas Hickey. He was just outshined by a large margin. And thats y i am not the biggest fan of his voice acting. His character in script, absolutely great. But the way his voice and actions carried the story dulled the world. He like all others are the view point we have to explore the world. And Connor toto me atleast disapointed. But i still love this game. The homestead, Captian kids tresure, The underground tunnels, frontier fast travel location reveal process, and the dialoge along with music, includint the modern world were absolutely amazing. Connor was not.

Thank you so much. Thank you so freakin much for making this video. Connor is probably my second favorite protagonist in the franchise, with Ezio just, just, barely edging him out. They did Connor dirty. They really did. He deserved at least one more game to continue his personal journey. Ezio got three games, and over the course of his personal journey, we all saw how much of a complete person he was, how mutli-faceted and interesting he was, full of his own shortcomings and failures. I have to admit, at first, I was not too keen on Ezio. But by the time I got to the end of Revelations, when Ezio is a tired, broken-down old man, it was really bittersweet to hear some of his musings and internal narrations. Connor could have been given much the same development arc. Maybe part of the reason why I like Connor so much is I see just a little bit of my own personality in him. XD
