The Lore Explanations for Multiverse Games 

Sometimes you don't need an explanation other than, I wanna see Superman and Goku teaming up.

Sometimes the best explanation for a multiverse game is just "shut up, they're here now" instead of bullshitting some lore at people who don't care

"If I were to rate how Dead by Daylight is doing their crossovers, *I'd say they're doing a pretty good job so far.*" Had me laughing. For those of you who don't know, this is a very infamous quote in the DBD community, as the director of the game famously said during a dev livestream "I think we've done a pretty good job so far" meanwhile the entire fanbase was essentially on fire due to the sheer amount of bugs and balance issues within the game. This line constantly gets meme'd in the community. I appreciate you putting this reference in, as I am 99% sure this is absolutely intentional. The wording is too specific to be random chance.

I think its also implied that the themes of burnout and creation in Smash Bros are indicative of Sakurai's own feelings working on the franchise over the years. And that meta commentary is cool to me.

It kinda feels like in smash 5 the characters being toys is less felt in the other games but at the same time being similar to smash 3’s lore

The whole "It's a kid playing with toys" thing for Smash was cool at first until you realize it implies a child has toys of Rated M characters and Samus in skimpy outifts.

Ik I basically a FN nerd for saying this but just to clarify and to keep things up to date: 1. The zero point is the center of all reality not just the source, which is also why it is in its own reality known as "Reality 0" 2. The nothing was not a significant villain, only ever having a presence in one season and even then, only had some dialogue but not even any form of design. The antagonist changed throughout the over 30 seasons of the game. 3. The Zero Point does exist in by chapter 5 but that island is not home to it and therefore isn't reality 0, putting the method of crossovers into question. 4. The Imagined Order never synthesized any island, the island itself is naturally made by the zero point to protect itself and is "Reality 0", with the exception of chapter 4's island which was forged by a story character using parts of multiple realities. We know this because the chapter 2/3 island was made by the zero point to protect itself, and the chapter 1 island existed before the imagined order found it.

my favorite alternate reality explanation is that they just always existed in the same universe and it was never brought up until it was convenient

Disney should make a platform fighter where the story is just... A bunch of artists that decided to draw Disney characters fighting each other to the death for kicks and giggles. There's not even a true story mode, just Smash's All-Star Mode with a 'plot' and monsters made out of past movie villians... And Death Trap Minigames.

LEGO Dimensions had the best lore tbh. It helps that it's built off the LEGO Batman videogame lore, so we're following an established DC universe. I like how they give solid reasons to go to each universe (the Foundation Elements, fun ways to incorporate iconography of those worlds into a larger story) and it's super fun to see all the different character interactions. Vortech is an effective and fun villain, and the other villains included are cool too - though there is a bit too much emphasis placed on DC villains throughout the story mode

i’m a huge dbd nerd, basically the reason pyramid head is in the entities realm is because he is there to punish the entity itself. his main power is digging into the ground with his sword (the realm is made out of the entity itself). and he constantly breaks the rules by killing survivors by his own hand. also side note, the entity is not trying to destroy the multiverse, it’s only goal is to feed, but it can freely travel the multiverse and the trials take place in their own universe.

The fanmade flash character fighting game 'Flash Bash' has some pretty neat lore. After Adobe Flash was deleted, the multiverse was seemingly destroyed, however when ruffle was installed it was brought back, but it wasn't perfect, main characters got sucked into a Nexus point where all flash games worlds meet. Juliet from NT Creature and The Visitor took over in secret. We get a fight between Henry stikmin and Max/Dart Monkey, before they realize they're on the same side. The rest of the story mode is them at getting all the heroes to join them, so they can go fight The Visitor (who overthrew Juliet). They beat him up, and everyone goes back to their respective universe after ruffle gets an update to fix the bugs.

I find that funny how they trying to explain why superman is fighting morty. The soluce of "this is not the true characters" work so much better.

Funnily enough while Sadako might not make the most sense being in Dead By Daylight, the creator of The Ring actually made it canon lol

Something about the entity is that it doesn't exactly want to destroy the multiverse. Instead it unintentionally does that as a bi product of searching for food across realities.

6:20 player first confirmed in the pve trailer the universe it takes place in is a brand new one called wb-35c so I imagine the reason it can pull charecters like neo and toons is just because if you manifest them, they arrive other charecter acknowledge the other as fictional in their own reality like the batman who laughs that says in one line bugs bunny is a “toon” I think wb-35c works with metaphysical and physical things

So I dont want to be THAT guy, but Fortnite and Dead by Daylight are literally my hyperfixations and some of my favorite lore in media ever. And I'm also really fucking autistic so here we go. (I hope I don't seem pretentious on these topics either, I just get really excited talking about them haha) Fortnite: I saw a comment below so ill just go off of that and expand. - Again, The Nothing wasn't really too important but it does belong to an alien race called The Last Reaity who works for The Nothing in order to destroy the omniverse and the Zero Point. They are (or at least, use to be) a MAJOR part of the story. - The IO isn't just a group of scientists. They were organized by a person named Geno. He was the first person who had the idea to create a perfect society and I think was the first person to truly understand the Zero Point and its capabilities. He also found out how to stay immortal and the IO, because of his findings, are millions of years old. They also get the immortality that Geno discovered to forever work for them. - Going back to that comment, crossovers are very questionable in chapter 5. But something to note is that Rift Islands, just like in Chapter 4, are still a thing in Chapter 5. The only thing is that Rifts can't exist without the Zero Point present. It's honesty really weird. - In The End event at the end of Season 10 of Chapter 1, a black hole was created to rematerialize the original island to make Chapter 2's island. That's why there are familiar locations like Pleasent Park on it, while still having new ones. Same goes for Chapter 3, as it was flipped and the "other half" of the same rematerialized island. That explains why NO familiar locations are on Chapter 4's map, because it is reconstructed by different realities and is not part of the original at all Dead by Daylight: -I don't think The Entity wants to necessarily destroy the multiverse, but canonically it takes pleasure in destroying entire worlds and timelines for funsies - The original characters sometimes do come from different universes. In Legion's universe, the story of The Hillbilly is just a TV show in theirs. But in Billy's, Legion doesn't even exist. At least, not to our knowledge . - About power scaling, things like survivors items (aka Jill's gun for example) and the hatches in lockers, are blocked off by the Entity with its little claw things. And for the killers, a new lore explanation on super powerful people like Vecna is this thing called "The mark of negation" that keeps people like him from being too powerful, even more powerful than the likes of Freddy, who The Entity also had to nerf significantly. It's now on the back of Vecna's neck. - I'm pretty sure while that Vecna DOES want to overrule The Entity, the reason he is paying along so much is that he can be able to learn more evils to put in his spell book. He could feel The Entity's presence in his lore and chanted its language in order to learn even more. - I'm really happy that I found someone that agrees or can see that the reason the main timelines of crossovers don't affect the actual franchise is because of very simular universes, just that one has Entity intervention and the main one doesn't. I just wanted to say that because online it seems like people are kinda split but I always found that to be the most likely. (Although Ada came to DBD with her RE2 Dress on but lore wise was taken in RE4 so idek how that works lol)

I think my personal favorite type of Multiverse lore is for games like Project X Zone or Street Fighter X Tekken, where they simply say that its a universe where where those characters just exist together in the same world. Brawl sorta goes in here as well.

Real fans know that Smash began because Mario tripped Yoshi in the very first commercial and thus began the war.

In the actual lore of Kid Icarus, Smash Bros. DID happen to the characters, which gets discussed both in their game and the fourth installment of Smash Bros. The series also has no fourth wall, so take that as you will, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

Doom eternal does this in an interesting way While the main story doesn't have it the multiplayer has this where the doom slayer is going to multiple universes and killing their demons, but due to him entering their universes their worlds affect his armor, basically the reason theres skins

To add onto the vecna part, he himself was so powerful that he was branded with this "seal of negation" by the entity to dampen his powers that you can actually see in game behind his head. It was a cool lore tidbit Cote revealed in an interview.

Rick making the Meta joke about the anime character is very in character for Rick. He's constantly breaking the 4th wall in the show and he's even aware that he's in a fighting game

Your fortnite explanation was really good but I do want to add one supporting thing, that the crossover characters being in the game does depend, for some characters it was Jones’ doing and for others it was the zero point just pulling them from their realities. That’s all. Don’t mean to sound like a 🤓 but yeah just wanted to add that

I (personally) still think Fortnite does it best when it comes to actually *trying* to explain what's happening- rather than copping out. Multiversus has the obvious 'day one draft' lore that's probably never going to be rewritten and Smash tries to avoid explaining it altogether by being very vague- but Fortnite's lore progressively explains what's going on despite not REALLY knowing what's going on. Every season (for the most part) introduces another faction on the defending or opposing side with their own reason for doing what they're doing- ever slowly but surely explaining why 'x' happened after 'y'. Literally four seasons summarized: Super powerful alien cubes are appearing around the island- The IO starts looking into it. Oh it's literally a mothership dropping them, send half the island's population on a suicide mission. *Oh fuck, that didn't work.*

An anime character coming to Multiverses? Okay that's definetly Jotaro. Warner brothers owns David Productions, and if they're smashing IPs together and seeing what sticks, they might as well add a popular anime IP

fortnite’s reason for having collaborations is: why not? it’s turned into a social game and the man who used to run it just loves everything pop culture, the last time he oversaw the game he put indiana jones and darth vader in the battle pass because why not? yes there’s a story but the story’s become its own separate thing with the collaborations being something cool that fans just love, some of the best online star wars content in years has been on fortnite, swinging with web shooters felt better than it did in the official avengers game and arguably required more skill to use than the playstation spiderman games (unless you play with no swing assist), even though the collaborations may seem like epic games selling out to outside people, there’s real effort in everything they put into the game to make it enjoyable

I have had a dream of making a game one day, and although my game doesn't surround any sort of multiverse concept, I have thought of crossovers as a possibility. I feel like most games that aren't fighting games tend to keep everyone on a fair playing field by simply making their big IP characters a skin instead of an actual 1 to 1 character from their original world, mainly with Fortnite and partially with MultiVersus. Considering I had a dream of a hero shooter, if I wanted to do a collab, I ain't going the cheap OW2 route of some overpriced skin. I would KILL to have the character fully realized as who they are in the best way we could, between their moveset and their personality. Kinda like how Marvel Rivals is doing it. Sorry if this was completely off-topic. Just wanted to incorporate my 2 cents.

Also it would be fun to think that the entity is also the same one as the Evil from Evil dead since Ash got into the realm by mispelling something in the Necronomicon again

So like, Fortnite creates clones of the characters from other universes? That makes Master Chief having two clones. One is dead from a failed experiment with clone children while the real ones go through the Spartan Program. Said Master Chief that went through the Spartan Program gets transported to Fortnite to crank 90s while the clone fights The Banished. Very interesting

the reason I think DBD is the best multiverse game is because of a main reason original characters, corperates just use the multiverse as a way to bring YOUR favourite characters a game to get more money DBD has some other characters (nic. cage, Micheal myers, ghostface etc) but it never forgot it's roots of its of characters where they expand upon their own killer/survivor catalog (gunslinger, twins, oni etc)

Fun fact there’s a theory that the kid in smash’s lore is sakurai and the game is about sakurai’s life and upbringing he’s the kid with the imagination

If I were to order them from Bad to Good it would be: 4. MultiVerses- I like the concept but some of it doesn't really explain why characters who canonically don't like violence fight. Then again,the story isn't complete so we have to wait for more story details. (Side note,I really like the Jason Vorhees design and unironically think it's better than most Jason designs) 3. Fortnite- This isn't bad but I just prefer the other 2 next ones more plus an actually reason why No-kill characters kill. 2. SSB- Good but it's only here because I prefer the next one.(Also has a reason why OP characters like Sephiroth doesn't go fuck all Supernova and kill mostly everyone and admittedly some characters push it up higher on the list) 1. DbD- Good and same reasons why I like SSB. It's only in 1st place because I like horror....end of story. Here is an idea: Make a new god character who is bored in the Void. He has siblings who created universes/multiverse/realities of their own. This god liked their creations and asked to borrow them. His siblings refused. So this god decided to "copy" his siblings' creations and put them in his own universe where they co-exist or fight to the death.

Something I haven't heard anyone ever mention for smash, you could say that Sora, being the final character for Ultimate, represents childlike wonder and joy, rekindling your love for fun, and stuff like that. This mainly comes from both Ansem the Wise's speech in Dream Drop Distance, where he says that Sora's love for other people is so great that he can bring things to life by seeing them, and this is obviously echoed in his smash trailer, where his joy and optimism quite literally bring the toys to life, reigniting the faded flame of imagination, and this ties into Kingdom Hearts' themes of growing up as well

Multiversus taking place in a server would explain further anomalies, such as the Gremlins characters' apparent immunity to "sunlight"; if it's not actual sunlight, it's not dangerous to them. On the other hand, we see several stages in the launch trailer, each seemingly scooped out of their world of origin and just floating in space... this is similar in appearance to Space Jam's setup, BUT still different- there, each world was its own self contained planet; here, each stage is closer to a diorama than a miniature digital ecosystem. Plus, more stages appear over time, and the Space Jam court is one of these self-contained stages that manifested later than the others... which suggests something more like these areas are getting pulled into one place similarly to the fighters. As for why everyone's fighting, I think I heard somewhere that the fights themselves either combat the encroaching Nothing, or feed it... I can't recall which. This suggests that either A: characters are dealing with the Nothing in the only available way, or B: The Nothing is encouraging these fights somehow to strengthen itself. We might learn more later on. There were other original characters discovered in development- I guess we'll see if they come to the game later on! I really hope they get foreshadowed decently before time so we don't get a Banana Guard scenario where the new character is revealed and the most vocal of the community act really upset. As for another Zanifeer resident, one of the devs does have an older or possibly evil-looking version of Reindog as their profile picture... MVS and DBD were the only lore explanations I was familiar with, so it's cool to hear about the others! Nice video.

I think the most simple way to summarize every single explanation truly is, the companies just want your money and want to bring fan favorite characters, the difference is that the excuse from each game for that is more elaborated than the other

Brawlhalla actually have a good explanation, its Just that everybody there died and were send at their peaks to Vahalla, and they figit simply because its Fun and entretaining but in the end theyre all friends (sorta). We also have sum Legends (characters) that enter the Vahalla simply because they wanted to or had a objective to clear there, like Artemis whos basically the avatar of the universo who seek and Hunt Orion (for whatever reason). ALL of the original char have really great and (If u search enough) deep lore, like how the Fangwild war happend or the fact that Diana got Lost on a nigthmare limbo, its so cool to see how they interacted to those who lived at their time and so fun to see how they do It now outside of the fights in the Vahalla, and its kinda of justified since theyre all dead now (and cant die again) they just put their differences aside for the love of battles, but outside off em theyre kinda of just chilling togheter in the afterlife :D

Not an essay, just a tiny correction on the Fortnite lore. The Nothing doesn’t belong to the IO, but to another faction, and the central antagonists are the Cube Queen from the Last Reality and Geno from the IO✌️ About Dead by Daylight, I think its cool how Pinhead isn’t even forced in the entites realm, he’s just there cause he likes making people suffer. And his Mori just teleporting his victim away from the realm is priceless

Don’t you just love it when someone makes a video covering an incredibly specific topic that you are absolutely crazy about? I know I do. Crossovers are wonderful, usually stupid fun, and I can’t get enough of them. I wanted to bring up two games that I love following the lore of despite the fact that they want your money, but my enjoyment of both has endured to this day. Those games are LEGO Dimensions and Disney Heroes: Battle Mode. And I’m only gonna be talking about the former, because the latter has been around for 6 years and I don’t have time to talk about both. LEGO Dimensions was the last entry in the “Toys-to-Life” craze that Skylanders had kicked off. You’d buy a starter pack, and if you wanted more content, you’d go to the store to buy more physical toys. I’m proud to say that I still have the entire collection to this day (With the exceptions of Supergirl and Green Arrow. Screw them). The plot kicks off with a dimension-hopping tyrant named “Lord Vortech” and his robot minion, X-PO, finally finding the dimension that Vortech had been seeking for years: Foundation Prime. The two unearth tablets that depict “The Foundation Elements”. They are described as “artifacts from the start of time”, as well as “the cornerstones of time and space”. These elements consist of: Kryptonite (Any will do) The One Ring The Palantir (Why does LotR get two?) Captain Metalbeard’s Treasure Chest The Red Ruby Slippers Homer’s Inanimate Carbon Rod Master Chen’s Staff of Elements The Flux Capacitor An Aperture Science Cake (Which is not a lie) A P.K.E. Meter A Gold Token from within a Midway Arcade Machine And The Diamond Scarab (Found in Scooby-Doo’s dimension) Despite X-PO’s warnings, Vortech banishes him, briefly loses control of his body, and realizes that physical dimension-hopping is getting harder, so he builds a castle and starts summoning villains from other dimensions and forces them to go grocery shopping for him. Our heroes, who are the only canonical ones because they are in the starter pack, consist of Batman, Wyldstyle, and Gandalf. Each of them go through the same motions of witnessing their friends (Robin, Frodo, and MetalBeard) getting captured by Vortech via portal because they were each holding a Foundation Element. The trio end up in another original location called “Vorton”, which becomes their base of operations. They rebuild the portal that exploded after they arrived, and they use it to travel to wherever the computer needs them to go. Er, but not Foundation Prime yet. Its location is unknown at first. I really want to tell the whole story, but I gotta hit the sack, so I’ll just bring up how this game handles timelines. Needless to say, it’s all over the place. Some are easy to pin down as taking place after their previous installments, such as The LEGO Movie, Portal 2, and the LEGO Batman Video Games. However, the intro makes it very clear that certain canon events and timelines are going to be thrown out of whack, confirmed by The Lord of the Rings. Gandalf’s introduction to the story takes place during Fellowship where he falls to his “death” with the Balrog. Batman ends up falling with him after he chased Robin through a portal back home. This is the part where Miguel gets pissed. Batman saves Gandalf, Frodo gets captured as the two give chase, and the rest of the fellowship just wait there. Forever. Even after the game’s end. I guess the Orcs who were shooting at them were so shocked that they all fled? So, yeah. That’s the intro to LEGO Dimensions. It’s a very strange mixture of a crossover where some characterizations and timeline placements are accurate, while others get tossed into a blender. If it weren’t so expensive to buy those toys, I’d highly recommend it! It’s one of my all-time favorite crossover games! Also Sonic Games. Yeah, he’s here, too.

The Entity also has had to bother nerf survivors like Cheryl Mason (Silent Hill) and some other survivors that have access to magic. It also buffed certain killers from their respective universe, like Twins, Legion, Plague, and a few others

Ash stripped of weapons would create his own weapons and any items around him hes literally used boiling water as a weapon

I think it would be pretty cool to make a part 2 on this video and include some other games. I have some recommendations, particularly Astro Bot when it launches, but you can also go to the stash of more obscure crossover games.

I would argue that Smash has distanced itself from the toy concept since around Smash 4, with trailers often using the invitation and other scenarios set deeper within the fighters' homeworlds. I remember noticing one of the Directs where they explained Spirits using terminology about "the real world" and "the world of imagination," saying that discarding spirits is sending them back to the real world, while the final game says that you're sending them back to their original worlds.

Fortnite storyline was amazing before chapter 3 season 3, it felt like they just they forget about it then picked it up again but it created a giant gap in the storyline

My main problem with Fortnite is how the crossover characters (well, all of the characters, for that matter) don't get to be the characters. No personality, no voicelines, not even any special abilities. You're not playing as Ash Williams or Peter Griffin or Batman, you're just playing as someone who *looks* like Ash, Peter, or Batman. At least, that's how I always saw it.

I really wish Fortnite didn't focus so hard on their multiverse/crossover stuff because, not only does it make their story more non-sensical and confusing than it was, but it overall hinders the game's story and gameplay severely at times. The biggest offenders being C2S5 having it's main content just be Item Shop skins rather than significant gameplay changes/new weapons and the collabs with Marvel ruining plotpoints and the overall flow of the story like the Zero Point plotpoint was rushed in C2S4, retconning a character in a comic just so they could give her a celebrity facemodel, revealing AND killing a PRIMARY ANTAGONIST in a comic and never mentioning it in-game, I could go on.

I think they're called crossover games instead of multiverse games.

Fortnite lore is a pretty convoluted mess with resets and universal destructions and the fact that the main guy behind the lore left but Crossovers mostly happen because either kidnappings or visits (you were hired or on tour), it's not too complicated either you were taken by one of the factions or even the zero point itself (which has been gone for a while) Or you're simply visting like for a concert unless you're Arianna Grande who was canonically used by tlr to scan our minds There used to be also ig rifts and portals but nowadays most collabs are just because people simply showed up

massive fortnite loser here and I think I could help with clarifying a few things regarding it's lore The Nothing was not a main antagonist and was essentially an underling to a larger antagonist "The Last Reality" who are behind most of the antagonists in the game's story. They don't seek destruction of the multiverse but more so just control over it. When somebody gets brought to the island, only their memories and ability to speak are taken away. This causes a bit of a disconnect between lore and gameplay. The Batman Fortnite comic shows that despite his memories being gone his principles are still there, such as his no kill and no gun rules. Their powers are also not suppressed, since characters like Thor and Spider-Man still keep their abilities during live events and comics. The Imagined Order bring in people from other realities to try and make a perfect civilization. They use the island's time loop to do that by having them all fight to the death. The last person alive in each loop cycle leaves the time loop and an exact clone of them is left behind on the island. They never state if the time loop and memory wiping is a result of the IO or the island itself. They make many hints towards the IO being the ones behind both, but considering they no longer exist following Chapter 4 and have no involvement with the Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 islands, yet the time loop and memory wiping still happen, its not clear what the actual cause of these things are in lore. In reality, its just the writing team giving up on trying to explain it lol. The lore for the game is not very clear and its mainly due to conflicts between the game's story director and the CEO of Epic Games wanting to do different things with the game. I think if they let the story director do what he originally wanted, the lore would be way less confusing and wouldn't be as weird lmao
