The Curse of Groundhog Day the Musical (ft. Broadway by Ghostlight) 

@@giovanniiamunno7874 I took this somewhat literally and figured because it never hit broadway there were reasons that this show had a lot of backstory and that beyond that a lot of junk happened but it turns out you are just saying the premise is a curse which I would have also had somewhat of an issue with but you are just saying the story is cursed which okay yes of course living one day over and over again can be seen as a curse but you specifically pointed to the musical and overall story and that's fucked up.

So much fantastic stage magic in this show. I wish people gave it more of a chance, it was one of my favorite Broadway experiences of all time.

Like that whole number is basically a human sized version of the cup and ball trick, just crazy repetitive slight of hand.

This sequence is so clever. I have watched it several times to see how it is done. In the shower scene, note that another hand runs along the shower rod at the top. The switch has already been made, but they are smart enough to help continue the sleight-of-hand. While it's hard to tell in this video, there is a large round of applause when he pops up in bed after the shower.

Credit for that one goes solely to Marc lol

It's also a plot device used in things that don't have "doctor" in the title.

Other people have added up realistically how long it would take to master the skills he has by the end, and I've seen estimates that go up to 40 to 50 years worth of Groundhog Days.

Only tangentially related - and I know this is an old comment - but apparently during rehearsals for the Old Vic revival they used "10,000 days" (almost 30 years) which is also significantly longer than a decade. Personally, I think any number of years can be a valid interpretation, I like the ambiguity.

I think 10, 30, even 50 years I can buy, but I feel explicitly saying "a lifetime" feels incredibly depressing. Groundhog Day has a message of hope, that even someone like Phil can improve both as a person and his experience of life. And sure, it employs a fantastical method for this to happen but I feel this kind of story always comes with an implicit promise of "so, you see, it can be done! Obviously not this way for you, but maybe somehow. Therapy?". Saying "He was trapped for a lifetime because that's how long it takes to become a true, better person who will live every day to the fullest" is explicitly saying that no real person can achieve this goal. I'm sure that's not what he meant but it seems an inescapable consequence of what he says. Then again maybe we can understand that as the role of fiction and talking to each other as social beings - we *do* have access to multiple lifetimes in a way, there is our literal actual life but in terms of information and learning we also have access to other people's lives, and nigh-infinite imaginary ones. Okay I've changed my mind. What Rubin is saying is that it takes PHIL a lifetime to learn all this stuff because HE'S NOT LEARNING FROM OTHER PEOPLE. And it's in fact the critical sea-change in him when he starts doing exactly that!

I was in shock for that whole segment. Absolutely brilliant stuff. It was perhaps the most fun I’ve had at a Broadway show, and I’ve seen some famous shows.

I agree. I absolutely loved this show. Saw it on Broadway in 2017. Andy Karl was fantastic. The staging, set were incredible. A very clever and enjoyable show.

Was this another snub from the Dear Evan Hansen year? I swear, every time I learn about another quality show that got snubbed in favor of that corporate "feel-good" teenage slog I get more and more bewildered.

Andy Karl is my new favorite actor because of this show. You're very fortunate to know him personally. I would give an arm and a leg to meet him or get to see him perform live :)

Yeah I wanted this to be a What Went Wrong - a little more investigative and a little less explainy. Poor Nancy not even getting mentioned just about sums her character up though, doesn’t it? 😅 There are so many cool things about this show that would have made for excellent content - maybe they’ll revisit it someday for a proper deep dive 🤞🏻🤞🏻

That's funny, I always thought act two was the much stronger part of the show. Or at least that's where the deeper themes start coming into play. And I mean, Hope, If I Had My Time Again, Night Will Come, Seeing You, these songs all blew me away when I first heard them!

@@4dultw1thj0b It’s mostly a preference thing. I’m not a fan of more pop like songs such as If I Had My Time Again. IMO, Songs like Day 1-3, Philanthropy, and Nobody Cares really thrive, while Act 2’s songs, although strong thematically, fall flat musically.

@@shiquote Gonna have to do a strong disagree there. I think the whole score is a cohesive work of art - and if I HAD to quibble I’d say Nobody Cares is too long (though on stage it doesn’t seem that way because of the spectacle you’re seeing). Seeing You gives me goosebumps every time. 🥰 (And Philandering SLAPS 😆)

@@allisonbergh4429 agreed!! The score has brilliant variety and reflects the emotions and tone of the show so well. All you have to do is look at the sheet music to “if I had my time again” to know it’s a complex work of art (with a crazy amount of key changes for 5 minutes😆) and let’s be honest…it’s the “defying gravity” of Groundhog Day🙌🏻 the messages in act II’s songs are much deeper and more meaningful and that’s what makes the show so great.

@@amandatracey3287 I really enjoy the clever stuff Tim does with titles too: “Day One”/“One Day” and “Philandering”/“Philanthropy”. He does a similar antonymic thing with the songs in Matilda (and “School Song” is the cleverest bit of lyrical trickery EVER)

@@Caroline-rv8wy Yeah, I’ve yet to actually do stage door (mainly due to only starting seriously going to the theatre earlier this year after wanting to for years) because I’ve always felt like, if I did, I’d miss my train home.

I wonder what rhymes they’re objecting to. Coz there’s only one (maybe two) that makes me wince a little: rhyming “court” and “caught”. But Tim Minchin is an Aussie, and the show was created in the UK, and that would have been fine either place.

@@ej3016 I agree the movie wasn’t necessary worth singing about. But the musical (which was written by the original screenwriter) is MUCH better imo. Give the cast album a listen, or seek out a bootleg recording. Tim Minchin (who wrote the songs) said his goal was to make people forget about the movie within the first few minutes

I think they were going for the personality trait of narcissism, as opposed to NPD. The original myth of Narcissus is also an inaccurate characterization of someone with NPD - but literally defined the word “narcissist” Not worth getting prickly about it.

@@allisonbergh4429 Tbh I feel like the way personality disorders are defined in psychiatry is a bit flawed in itself, like all human behavior has to be pathologized in some way.

@@4dultw1thj0b I feel a little bit sorry for the psychologists and psychiatrists. People go to them saying something is wrong. They don’t want to hear “Nah, you’re totally within the range of normal(ly effed up).” They want a name for what’s wrong, and an effortless means of righting it. Which puts the doctors in a bit of a tough spot. They only way they can even TRY to help people is to give them what they’re demanding and hopefully trick them into actually working to improve their lives or whatever. So the DSM-V is the size of the Encyclopedia Brittanica, and they’ve started stealing words that already had meanings. Like narcissist, which was a word long before it was a diagnosis 🤷🏼‍♀️
