Fellow Legends, welcome! Today we dive into another exciting video by Iron Pineapple. This time, we have the follow-up in his King's Field series. As it turns out, there was a line of King's Field games before Demon's Souls came into being. There's so many interesting design choices made in them, as well as some rather interesting insights of things to come in the Souls games. I absolutely recommend that you go ahead and check out Iron Pineapple as well as the original video to show some support for the source material!

So a super fun fact the PS1 can render in full two and only two black knights from DS 1 and I'm pretty sure the frames would be terrible but they can

So for a little context on this one black knight has something a like 45,000 poly count and the PS1 and process I something like 95,000 polygons

There actually is a modern attempt at Kingsfield called Lunacid, and its really good! I highly recommend checking it out for that Kingsfield experience.

Just realized that the ancient city is the sunken city from DS2. And the forest area is Eleum Loyce (before the ivory king froze his kingdom.)

I like the 'missable, but nearly essential' MP item. I'm playing Fear and Hunger: Termina right now, and that game has a ton of things that I would call critical to your success that you can just miss (or even not get due to bad RNG). it's refreshing to have games respect you enough to trust you can explore and find things on your own.

I'll say that as a massive fan of metroid games, dark souls 1, and recently a fan of kings field the ancient city? It Definitely stretches the definition, but I'd say it more has the world of a metroidvania than being an actual metroidvania. That being said though, ds1 is my favorite souls randomizer because of randomizing keys which could help me unlock areas in different orders. While playing ds1 randomizers like that... it honestly does feel like a metroidvania in a way. Still not on the ball exactly, but some form of middle ground.

DS2 has more jank than the others and I would from an objective stand point call it the weakest From game, but it also has its charm and unique things that no other From game did (even if it was mostly small scale things).

You heard correctly. despite all the shit it gets DS2 is actually a really good game. I am having fun currently running through the DLCs

I know a few people that swear by it being the best Souls game.
@fenikeizu3392
@fenikeizu3392 4 месяца назад
@@KipReacts I'd argue that too. the enemy placement thing I only noticed when using Bonfire ascetic but that places certain areas into the next NG+ which of course can spawn more enemies :D
@fenikeizu3392
@fenikeizu3392 4 месяца назад
and I'm only talking about enemy placement because that is argument numero uno about it being shit

Kinda feels like Kingsfield is a meaner Dark Souls, but also, kinda more rewarding at the same time.

As a Metroidvania vet, I've always considered Dark Souls a tangientially related game. It ISN'T a Metroidvania for the simple reason that it is 3D. But, many of the design choices and philosophies at play are the same for both genres, ESPECIALLY in the hand holding department. Both types of game revolve around exploring, finding new items and/or abilities that allow you to backtrack and make further progress in a different area, and the best games of both genre offer multiple options for overcoming challenges like bosses. Zelda is a bit further away from a Metroidvania, and is often how I distinguish between what I consider Metroidvania-esque and what I think is separate. The puzzles are a huge part of that - aside from the two NES games, the Zelda series has a far more direct style than a Metroidvania. There IS exploring and backtracking, but they are usually things that happen in straight lines. You DO discover items or abilities that allow you to progress, but they are often situated in places where it makes sense to immediately turn around and move back to the original place. If you wrote out a flowchart, Zelda games tend to give you a lot less freedom overall, at least in my opinion. They make up for this by allowing for more satisfying puzzles and dungeons. I love both styles, and obviously some Metroidvanias play into this more Zelda-esque style, but for the majority I think this holds true. The obvious comparison for all of this is Hollow Knight, which is unmistakably inspired by both genres, and manages to master the essences of both. Before Hollow Knight, DS1 was the main comparison between the genres I would make (though I haven't played Demon's Souls, so idk how that one's world feels). But since Hollow Knight, so many newer Metroidvanias have come out that have Souls-like combat, or at least some element of it. Even series like Metroid integrated small things from this, most notably the parry mechanics in Samus Returns and Dread.

The closest we will ever get to an official modern Kingsfield made by fromsoft is dark souls 2. For example, if you compare kingafield 4 to Dark Souls 2, it's VERY similar. From enemies to illusionary walls, it's almost one to one. I mean, if I remember one of the directors of Kingsfield, helped make the game. It's one of the reasons why I really appreciate the game even with all of its flaws.

Had to double take and make sure I wasn't watching the first again. But seems like they majorly improved from the first. The wall textures make me woozy like motion sickness but its neat to see it slowly becoming Demon Souls.

While I was playing kings field 4 for the first time, I did end up leveling up a weapon once. I forget what weapon it was, but the level was enough to make it either on par or better than most other gear I was finding. I ended uo using it until I got the moonlight sword at the end of the game. The level system is way more affective then he gave it credit for.
