I loved the absurdity and legacy of the Klingon fleet! So much of the Klingon bravado and ego is predicated on boasting and exaggeration! I think the Fat Man is amazing! It is reminiscent of the Jem Hadar battleship. So huge and ridiculous to insight terror in the enemy!

I remember playing scenarios with the FASA tabletop game where the "Fat Man" was ignored and overlooked. After all the other battleships and heavy cruisers blasted each other apart, the Fat Man did a pretty good job of cleanup.

It seems like the Fatman's greatest weakness was that it was lacking in generator output. it looked like it had a lot of firepower but was lacking in the means to feed that power. It had a lot of potential but that potential was not realized.

One thing I really loved about this game was that it treated the Original series Enterprise and its sisterships as a seperate class from the Enterprise of The Motion Picture era Enterprise. From the Federation Ship Manual. "On Stardate 2/1204, the Constitution Class cruiser USS Enterprise returned from its last 5-year mission, the only one of the original 13 remaining in service, all others having been lost or destroyed. She was publicly hailed as the 'Champion Of The Federation', and, on Stardate 2/1302, the vessel began a scheduled overhaul that would lead to one of the most interesting conversion/modifications in recent history. What began as a scheduled overhaul of a Constitution Class cruiser turned into the Enterprise Class cruiser." in the game lore, the old Constitution class production was discontinued and all future Constitution scheduled builds were built as members of the New "Enterprise" class based on the refit to the original Enterprise. The Old Constitution class ships that existed, remained in service, mainly as 'galactic survey ships' and were phased out of front line service as more Enterprise Class ships were built. A note here. The Constitution Class ships could still hang tuff in a fight with just about any Klingon ship other than the D 7m and the D 10 series Battlecruiser that were relatively 'new' in the games timeframe. However, the Enterprise Class ships pretty much outclassed any ship in the Klingon Fleet other than the L 24 Battleship. The hands down, most powerful warship in that game was the Excelsior Class. It badly outclassed every other ship in the game. Including Enterprise class, All Romulan ships, and the Gorn.
@nachtwaya8721
@nachtwaya8721 4 месяца назад
Naw. The Romulan Nova class could match it, just as the Winged Defender matched the Enterprise class.
@acerrspage4205
@acerrspage4205 4 месяца назад
@@nachtwaya8721 I agree on the Winged Defender, though I never lost ENT class in a Romulan or Klingon Engagement. (course I tended to treat ENT class as the center piece of a Task Force or Battle Group. With BAKER ddg's and Northhapmpton's running screen for Reliant and Enterprise class.)

I still like the SFB Klingon battleship best: the B-10. A fleet unto itself and the boom separates as a full D-7 cruiser.
@kfeltenberger
@kfeltenberger 4 месяца назад
The B-10 was, IMO, a dog. Yes, it was stuffed with firepower, but if you were doing a points based game, it soaked up so much that you lacked maneuver units. I much preferred the C-8.
@jamesnabors3643
@jamesnabors3643 4 месяца назад
@@kfeltenberger Cannot argue with you on that point... but I also won't argue with an escape pod that is a D7... But really, the B-10 is the sort of thing that you use when the other side has a base tying their ships to a small area.
@kfeltenberger
@kfeltenberger 4 месяца назад
@@jamesnabors3643 Absolutely! It’s a siege breaker. First time I encountered one was in the mid-80s and I was running the original Lyran X-Cruiser…closed to point blank range and did a ram with my ESGs, overloaded torpedoes, disrupters, and phasers. Damage was out of this world…and then the player realized he had only paid for minimal shields…it didn’t explode, but it was absolutely gutted and wrecked.

Man Fasa really had some of the most creative ship designs from star trek, I remember they had all kinds of planetary assault ships and the like, since transporters were still kind a luxury (where ships had ONE maybe two of them on the whole ship) you had all kinds of cool 'star fleet drop troops' and the like, still great content, and I LOVE these old ships from that game, so creative, and as far as im concerned they should all be canon.
@jvstice56
@jvstice56 4 месяца назад
The "Fat Man" definitely was an interesting design from the old FASA games. She was a burly ship, and could've easily been a nightmare to deal with for the Romulans and Starfleet if she was designed right. However, Klingons have always been known for their hit hard, hit fast, die with honor philosophy, and the L-13 definitely is a bit of a clash. A for Effort at least. Can't wait to see the Excelsior in action, when when you do your ship breakdown. She was a great ship, a perfect design in my eyes, and definitely was the next Big Bruiser for Starfleet after the Constitution-Class.
@Malbeefance
@Malbeefance 4 месяца назад
The Fat Man really comes in to its own when the Ship Construction Manual is used to max out the design without increasing overall maximum tonnage class. The beast can absorb some serious damage before refit and can seriously soak up firepower once refit.

I love being able to see these FASA ships in 3 dimensions, as well as the added lore. I would think the purpose of the L-13 would be to conquer/colonize another world. The more maneuverable K'Tinga (D-7R? What would a K'Tinga classification be?) class would antagonize any starships, lead them away into traps, while the L-13 would warp in to bombard the planet and drop an ungodly amount of troops, tanks and equipment to bore in, even if any enemy ships warped back in. I would also think as a result that they would be like moving mountains, with their focus being on defense. I will also say that your 3D model gives this justice, as it looks a _LOT_ better than it did with just the profile views in the FASA game. 1:12 I still wished you would do a video on the true size of the K'Tinga, based on the size of the shuttle bay observation deck. If it is the equivalent to the shuttle bay observation deck on the Enterprise NCC-1701-A, then it has to be _HUGE,_ with warp engines as big as the Enterprise's.

It took me a month to watch this video. I was "scared" to click on it after seeing the warp nacelles extended. I'm glad you decided to have them retract for combat, at least. I surmise that, like a lot of FASA ships, the image was drawn before the backstory and stats were written. Although the backstory is definitely memorable, it could have easily gone a different direction and we'd all be talking about how awesome the L-13 was. I recently 3D printed this monster and when you hold one in your hand "at scale" with other FASA ships (like the Enterprise), it's pretty intimidating. The published ship's stats and its design aesthetic definitely don't match. This should be a very scary monster to go up against.

I have a deep affection for the L-13, because of it's flaws, not in spite of them. It's a great piece of fiction, and illustrates a reality which sci fi wargames sometimes ignore: Thinking, feeling minds screw up. Mistakes are made. Egos get in the way. Bribes to officials get things done which shouldn't. I loved sculpting the L-13 for Studio Bergstrom, and years later, it remains one of my favourite models. Thank you for giving the big guy some love!

It has been a while since I was deep into the lore, but I remember that the Excelsior started her life as the first transwarp vessel, which bombed and the drive never even did a successful test run. The spaceframe however was top of the line and after a refit to a standard warpdrive serial production began and lasted for decades, because the excelsior was a bloody advanced ship even without the mythical transdrive.

Ok jokes aside the design has it's potential merits if redone with a number of upgades and alterations. The "fat" design gives it a lot of room for either a more powerful or even a secondary warp core which would solve many of it's shortcomings such as it's weak shielding. The design also offers a lot space for additional armor/armaments. It could also be converted into a carrier with some significant capacity for it's time I imagine. I think there's actual potential in the design and kinda like it.

Thats more a flying fortress or mobile fleet commandpost than a effective battleship. I like the Fasa desings, but much of them, are...strange. An Excelsior class battleship? Easy... The nine phaser twin canons on the saucer are enough there. [maybe one Twin unit more on the top] But two additional forward photon torpedeo launcher on both sides bring the difference in a direct battle. The excelsior has standard two aft torpedo launcher. I think that is enough so. Maybe a number phaser singel turrets placed over the secondary hull give a better all around defense, like the USS - Lakota. Better armored nacells and a dencer deflector grid and the newest shildemitters give a battleship excelsior the defence power to take in a lot of incomming fire.
