We cannot have calm, logical conversations today when we put everybody under the banner of a particular label. And the problem is nobody’s definition of that label is the same.

I honestly think there are reasonable people all over the place. Unfortunately the craziest voices are usually the ones that get amplified in our society because outrage generates clicks and views, etc. etc. etc. Reasonable people tend to see these loud people and ignore them because we know it's not worth our time to try to have a conversation with them. It's pointless. Life's too short to spend it arguing with people who are just waiting to speak instead of listening with an open mind.

You are so right. Perhaps it's because emotion can choke rational debate. Labels are for products not intelligent folk. I've been a victim of labels from people who don't even know me. But I do and that is a salvation. I'd rather be judged by God than ignorance. Travesties befall all presumptions which are unfounded. I met a preacher who believes Christ was a paedophile because he spoke to children. That's the measure of ignorance and phobia of something they will not understand. A gross divide now exists between young and old and sweeping hysteria has replaced debate. Duane is rational and together with himself and has a good grounding. I'm a Christian by definition. I don't practice sex or violence and try to help those afflicted by prejudice and ignorance. I admit it's not easy but it has a reward and that makes it at least a little more honourable. I've reached 61 had 3 attempts on my life and seen all behaviours but nothing comes closer than the respect a parent has for its child and fellow travellers.

Hey Dwayne, I totally agree with you on all of this. Labels are often dehumanizing and also over-simplify a lot of complicated things. I appreciate your calmness about addressing your views. I’m probably the opposite to you in a lot of ways if we look at labels alone and the ideologies associated with this labels. For example, I’m a 22 year old lesbian but I feel so connected to your philosophy and your outlook on life, faith and family. Never stop talking about your opinions and teaching the old ways. I personally LOVED your video on loneliness. I'm not an easily offended person at all because I do my best to not let other people make me feel any type of way. I'm 100% in control of my feelings and how I respond to something / someone, it isn't anyone else's responsibility. We all have to hold ourselves accountable. I always say If someone says something that sounds mean or wrong to you, instead of flipping out, ask "can I ask what you mean by that?" And just listen. They may actually mean something different than what you thought, or even better, they may even have a point that challenges your point and makes you think. Discussions of opposing views are a great opportunity for growth and broadening horizons, not to mention a chance to bond with, and gain more respect for one another. And if we all thought the same way and had the same opinions, human interaction would be such a bore. For an age that expresses the importance of self expression and individuality, it's awful hypocritical to then turn around and hate on someone for having a different opinion and way of life.

"isn't anyone else's responsibility" are words I hadn't put to my own feelings I had of the easily offended. For example I remember seeing a video of an open mic debate or something along those lines and some geeza kept going up to the mic and putting his anxieties onto the crowd, saying shit like 'can we please respect people's anxieties'. I can't remember specifically but it crawled under my skin to see someone dump their own personal mental responsibilities onto discussion. I'm not mad at him for I understand a little where he may be coming from, but that doesn't stop me from believing he's absolutely insane

Labels are a quotient of the ego. I know it sounds woo-woo, but our ego divides everything into categories in order to differentiate and project a meaning onto our sense perceptions. It’s a great survival mechanism, but it is also the source of suffering. The flip side is that everything we mark as bad or different is actually a projection of the evil inside our ego. Really it boils down to “I’m rubber, you’re glue…”
@freemindkev

The problem is that political groups understand the power of labeling. Instead of avoiding it because of that power (& danger), they deliberately use it to help push their agendas. It makes their competition look like the bad guy.

There is a tragic and potentially dangerous amount of anger in this country, Dwayne. As you have noted, people are not able to talk about their differences. This anger has ended friendships and family relationships. I believe what’s lacking is enlightened leadership, someone who can help us focus on our sameness as Americans. You are trying to make leadership strides in that direction and many of us applaud you for your efforts. We all need to be more willing to listen, really listen, and see both sides of the issues that divide us. Keep up the good work, Dwayne. Maybe you will inspire more folks to open up to divergent viewpoints and, at the very least, become more tolerant and understanding instead of living in anger and resentment. God Bless.

This is a very wise perspective of life and I‘ve really enjoyed this video. I‘m about as different as you can get from the typical viewer of this channel, to use ‚labels‘ I‘m lesbian, asexual, a passive Buddhist practitioner, and autistic. I share your views on how labels are misconstrued, and feel the exact same way about the ‚feminist‘ label and how I don’t use it for myself as it tends to be very polarizing and debated on the meaning. The strange thing with labels is they don’t change reality of what someone actually does or believes, it‘s surface-level and distracts from the true actions that someone does. I greatly enjoyed listening to you describe the uses and issues with labels so clearly. I‘m glad to hear that you‘re so calm about having different viewpoints rather than the typical arguer who automatically attacks someone for not being on their side, as a queer person I feel safe to view and interact with this channel. Keep up the great work!
@ohkaypoh

@Number 1 Western Fan The more specific way I‘d define myself is Homoromantic Asexual, so i have romantic feelings for women but no sexual feelings for anyone. I also said I‘m a passive Buddhist, meaning I don’t participate in every aspect of the lifestyle but instead focus on the philosophies.
@ohkaypoh
@ohkaypoh Год назад
@Number 1 Western Fan I understand a lot of terms can be confusing when surrounding asexuality, don’t worry, I shared your view once too so I can see where you’re coming from. I’m really glad we can have this conversation since it is very on topic with the video in terms of labels, specifically how we have differing terms of romantic relationships. When imagining a relationship, think of everything you do. Kissing, cuddling, sharing a home, dates, etc, that all falls into the ‚romantic‘ category. Anything sexual would of course fall into the ‚sexual‘ category. For me, I want to have a romantic relationship with a woman, and that‘s enough for me and is still valid as a relationship even though I don’t have an urge to have sex with anyone. For your metaphor I‘d compare these aspects more as ‚flavors‘ rather than ingredients. You can have a standard box cake, for me a romantic relationship, and you can add chocolate to it, meaning sex would be part of the relationship. Some people prefer their cake with or without the chocolate, and I happen to prefer without. It still doesn’t make it any less of a cake. My asexuality isn’t a choice and happens to coincide with one of the principles of Right Action in Buddhism, I didn’t plan for that to be the case haha. Even still, as I said, I mainly follow the philosophies so the restrictive practices aren’t my priority when forming a relationship. Figuring these things out for myself has been extremely beneficial and made my life in fact much more less confusing. When I thought I was straight, I had trouble forming friendships with boys, confusing friendship and anxiety for attraction. Realizing my sexuality has allowed me to pursue the relationships I want and have platonic friendships with guys, the best of both worlds. To me, none of this contradicts each other and like the video said, our labels don’t make our realities any less true. If anything else is still confusing I‘m happy to explain, having the chance to learn is what life‘s all about :)

Exactly 158 years ago, at about the same time of day that you are filming this, just up the road from you, in Franklin, TN. the bloody battle of Franklin took place. With over 8,000 casualties in a little over four hours, it was the bloodiest four hours of the Civil war (November 30, 1864). What you said in this video exactly describes why and how we live in a such an ugly society. We got graduate school educated snobs with business, law, finance, or engineering degrees who make assumptions about this or that. Without actually going out there and talking to the people they (supposedly) "serve." Your video also rang a bell in my mind and really touched my heart too, since for most of my life (so far) I'd often times run into people who would use their labels as a right to mistreat, abuse or speak down towards someone else who doesn't have that label. Never really knew how to respond back to such nasty individuals, until I realized that we are all artists and its nothing more than a salesman pitch (tactic) that gets used on us in order to manipulate us into something bad.
@alexsmith-ob3lu

@MimiBabe Not a problem! We have have something that is rotting us up on the inside, and we have to "get it out" so to speak or we ourselves end up very ill. I think the reason why most people (at least young people around my age) don't speak up or do anything, is because of wrong or lack of parental guidance. My parents both went to university, were the first to do so in the family, and thought so highly of themselves that they tended to look down on anyone who didn't have a university degree. I never did well in Academic schooling, so I ended up doing a skilled trade. They were disgusted with me, until they found out that 90% of young people in my age group were crippled with $70k average student loan debt from university, and not enough white collar jobs to be found. I think it really takes people getting "kicked in the face" to realize the truth and the reality we live in.

I agree that this obsession of labels won't ever have a finish line. It's going to continue to the end of time because (and this is a generalization, albeit an observable one) the people who refuse to let others have their freedom in disagreeing to labels just won't let it go. Which is why I've concluded that the only way out of this is to let go of words and let go of trying to make everyone at peace with one another. The only way we find peace is if each individual person can be okay with the indifference between themselves and everybody else.

What's interesting is the whole thing about being trans comes down to accepting that labels aren't always correct, just like you're saying. Someone labelled you as a man when you were born, and you were lucky that label stuck. For some people, it doesn't stick. If you don't have experience with people who are trans, with friends who come out as trans, it can be hard to see all the strife they deal with from the outside world just because how they label themselves doesn't match how others label them. There is a lot of hatred some people have just because some people are different. Some trans folk do develop a sense of embattlement and distrust, and they start throwing their own labels out to protect themselves, calling people transphobic, but that's because they have a hard life. So if there are some people out there who are hurting, you don't have to fully understand where they are coming from, just understand that some people lash out when they're living in a state of hurt, and try to find some forgiveness and compassion for that lashing out. That said, we as a society should really be taking a step back from the internet and the way it really magnifies problems and puts a pin in vitriolic conversation. That's something to watch out for regardless of whatever your underlying beliefs are.

Wisely said, my friend. I'm a transgender individual who, just like you said, didn't like the label I was given. In fact, I don't particularly like any labels. I don't 'identify' as transgender or genderqueer, I just live my life and feel how I feel. While my experience can best be explained to non-trans people by explaining I was born as one sex and 'changed' because I'm 'trans', that will never begin to capture the nuance of my lived experience. I agree with you completely that society needs to step back from the internet. I find that once people interact with an intelligent and calm whoever (that in which they do not agree with: trans people, gay people, other religions, etc.) that they realize everyone is human and, deep down, we are all the same.

Perfect, yet again hits the nail on the head with me. I consider myself to be a modern man, forward thinking, BUT, I do not have to agree with everything that's out there. I have my own views, morals and standards, and they are mine alone. Because they are mine I will not press them on to others, but all to often, particularly here in the UK, the biggest arguments I've had is that I must accept and abide by other peoples views, morals and standards and thus put mine aside. My issue resides with those that like to preach at me that their way IS the way. I live how I live, keep your politics, religion, sexual/gender, Meat/Vegetarian/Vegan preferences to your own business and don't push it on me. I'm not a religious man, I don't believe in afterlife etc.. so I like to live each day, appreciate each day I have without regret or remorse. I get out into the wild as often as I can as this resets my mental health. Acceptance seems to be the big buzz word these days and all to often I find that it is those that look constantly for acceptance don't often have that within their own self to start with. Anyway, loving this channel.

Interesting subject. It’s something I’ve been aware of for many years. There is a segment of our political society that has a history of redefining words to mean something that word did not originally mean. That can be a real problem as your discussion has revealed. In my opinion the reason for redefining words is to put a virtuous aspect to the subject that word is being applied to. Again in my opinion, that is purposefully done to persuade people that your values are virtuous. There are many well minded people that have been drawn off the path to another path just because of the redefining of words. It is very dangerous to our society.

Good evening Dewayne, I am from north Houston and live now east of Austin in rural Miliam County. I am 60 years old and I have always been country. I can work any part of a farm or ranch and I have broken many horses. I know I am not as savvy a horseman as you, not even close to your knowledge I'm sure. I am a transgender woman by label and it is something I have known since I was 6, not something I am a part of because it is the latest craze. I know if you and I were in a social or work environment. I believe you would show me and be respectful to me as a person or coworker or friend. I have been around plenty of men like you who may not agree or be on board with what transgender is or looks like. And that is fine, because in the end I think you would be friendly and supportive of who I am as a person, regardless of how I identify myself. I think you are an awesome person for helping so many people and I like listening to your subjects. I know if we knew each other we would have a trust and friendship based on our ability to depend on each other just based on our word and I know we are from the same time period where that was good enough. I don't know if you had a recent post about transgender people and I don't care. I can tell by your words in this video that you have a good heart regardless. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas holiday.

I am only 19 and I feel I have grown more in the last year or so I've been out of high school and out of the comfort and shelter of being an minor then I ever was in it. It's very strange since I almost don't recognize myself from back then and I think that had a lot to do with labels and thinking I had to be on 1 side or the other. If I wasn't one label then I was the other and if I was a certain label then I couldn't be the other. A big part of really trying to understand myself and the people around me, more importantly spending more time with people I love and care about then anything online, is that I am not indifferent on issues but sometimes I really understand both sides and think both opinions have some truth to it sometimes for different reasons. I think just like anything you're never successful on your first try, and that goes for life itself as it really seems like everyone is just stumbling all the way until they pass. Something I love to death is Dante's Divine Comedy, specifically Paradiso or Heaven is the part I want to reference but it's important that everyone knows these aren't divine Christian texts but instead Christian Fan-fiction but still introduces a lot of interesting concepts. One of my favorite concepts is when he enters the 4th sphere or The Sun which don't if your curious just read it. But It's when he interacts with one of Dante's favorite Christian scholars, a Dominican, Thomas Aquinas who you can even look up. But it confuses him when he sees Bonaventure here as well, a "Franciscan" who he doesn't agree with and by all means shouldn't have made to heaven in his mind. Essentially it's if you had the idea that only Republicans would make it to heaven because of what they believe but when you get there it's full of Republicans and Democrats. But Thomas Aquinas explains to put it short, that in making it to Heaven your beliefs and your labels don't matter but instead what matters is that you seek unfiltered truth from God with all your heart, mind and soul. That the love present in Heaven isn't bound by these ideas of an imperfect world. Essentially Dante is saying that *_Republican or Democrat, Black or White, Gay or Straight, etc. You can make it to Heaven as those labels actually have 0 value in your walk but instead it's whether you truly seek God's truth which means also implementing it._* Would love to hear peoples thoughts on this too, I always love talking about philosophical subjects and especially wacky biblical fiction like Dante's Divine Comedy or Paradise Lost, etc.

Hey, Dewayne, here to put a smile on your face. Snuck my dog into Walmart (she needed to shop), ran into a "cowboy", hat, long coat, and a cowboy smile. He looked at my dog and asked her name (had that drawl as he spoke), I said, "her name is Grace". He looked at her and said, "it's been mighty nice meeting you, Miss Grace". It was in how he said it, slowly and genuinely meaning what he was saying. This, Dewayne, is MY definition of "cowboy". Hey, he's gotten me calling her "Miss"Grace. In the few minutes I saw him, he made an impact on me AND Miss Grace-think it's like God, kindness, love, joy, peace. That is what he wants us to share with this world. I pray for a heart more like His. It's hard some days in this world, but, when I fail, (and I will), I will get back up and try again. P.S. Hey Dwayne, I like hearing your insight, even if I don't agree with your views all the time. The way you present them is rational, considerate, and respectful. Regarding something you said about viewing trans from a scientific perspective -- I'd like to share an interesting scientific insight that helped change my views on trans: An interesting phenomenon that occurs in people who lose a limb or appendage is called "phantom limb" syndrome. Basically, soldiers returning from war without an arm, for example, would sometimes feel an "itch" where their missing limb is supposed to be, and to get rid of this itch, they would have to scratch the air where the arm would be. This occurs too in men who have lost their 'member' from war, preventative surgery, etc. What's interesting, though, is that in men who identify as trans and who transition to female -- they do NOT experience this phantom limb syndrome after a bottom surgery. I find this interesting because, to me, it indicates that the idea of trans is not just superficially psychological, but something deep-rooted in the physical structure of their brain. Hope you find that fact is interesting as I did.

I just put a label on my printer to remind me of a specific thing that I want to do in certain printing situations. It is a label that is useful and practical to me. Labels that people use to categorize other people are generally not useful in any interaction or discourse with other people. As you alluded, words have meaning, much like the framework of a structure, but it is the context of those words that provides us with the foundation of the structure. You may think all of those things you advocate are good things, but each and every one of them involves the violation of individual rights, and so are not good things at all; I'd classify them as evil, in fact. You don't think in terms of individual rights; you think in terms of outcomes that you desire, regardless of the rights-violating means to achieve them. @charwyrm8702
@charwyrm8702 Год назад
I don't know specifically what you're talking about, but phobia as a suffix is usually more about *aversion to / hate of.* It's a translation from the Greek φόβος (Phóbos) meaning "aversion" *and/or* "fear", which we don't have a direct translation for in English. When I regard someone as being homophobic or transphobic, I don't usually think they're scared of gay or trans people, I think that the phobia I'm describing is disgust or revilement for said group. It's not my childhood trauma manifesting when someone makes it clear they hate me and I'd describe that they're disgusted at my existence. TL;DR -phobic people aren't usually scared of [X], they're more often averse to [X].
@DryCreekWranglerSchool
@DryCreekWranglerSchool Год назад
Believe that your definition is not quite accurate. When someone has a phobia of spiders, or clowns or heights or water they do not have a disgust at it or an aversion to it. They have an illogical unreasoning fear. A fear that has no explanation. That’s why the word phobia is used, for that is the definition of a phobia.
@charwyrm8702
@charwyrm8702 Год назад
@@DryCreekWranglerSchool That definition is also correct! Both are true for different things. The phobia of spiders describes an irrational fear, the phobia in hydrophobic molecules describes a repulsion/aversion to water. When we talk about homophobia, it's not a word used to describe people who are terrified of gay people, it describes repulsion/aversion. Phobia can apply to both in different ways, I was specifically talking about the less obvious non-fear kind of phobia.
@lorenzrosenthal119
@lorenzrosenthal119 Год назад
@@charwyrm8702 yes, different view != phobia. The thing is that people nowadays oftentimes cannot deal very well with rejection (of their views) or tension when someone disagrees. It is rather quickly perceived as hostility or phobia (an impulsive fear/aversion against something) instead of just a different view. I too have my difficulties sometimes with disagreements so I can tell you first hand ;) It is rooted in many experiences from my childhood, where I felt severely misunderstood and thus mistreated (also with physical violence) and thus powerless and angry. I see a similar emotion in a lot of SJW/LGBTQ/Feminists with whom I'm INTIMATELY familiar (for better or worse). They are just hurt, violated, victimised children who appear like angry, blamey victims.
@charwyrm8702
@charwyrm8702 Год назад
@@lorenzrosenthal119 The big issue is the way your language appears to downplay hostility as merely a difference of opinion - that someone's freedom to live authentically ought be limited by the powerful normative majority. Legal and social boundaries on minority people are growing ever more rigid and litigious, and the universal condemnation of violence we'd hear from media just a few years ago has now become justifying and excusing (i.e. coverage of Colorado Springs on Fox News). It sounds (from what you've said) like you don't like the left and people in minority groups because you think they complain too much about "normal and reasonable" people like yourself. If anything is childish, it's refusing to understand uncomfortable facts. It doesn't make a person less mature that they cry out when their communities are shot at.

I think part of the issue is that people have come to view youtube personalities as authority figures, despite it being a platform for sharing personal opinion. These are very frustrating people to deal with because they will almost never try to see things from another perspective, and like you said they are already thinking of the next gotcha moment as you're speaking. They think that there's no other way than their way, and if you don't see things their way then you must be terrible. We all have our journey in life, and it’s honor to be part of yours thru these videos as well. God bless, looking forward to the next video. (Side note, Cohiba Connecticut White Label is always a great cigar if you ever come across one. Small recommendation to try)

Hi Dwayne, Funny we have a few labels and definitions of cowboys here in Australia. when a guy is working or laboring with cattle he is known as a Jackaroo, the experienced horseman is very professional working with cattle we call him a ringer, and the owner of the cattle station or the ranch as you guys would call it is known as a cattleman. just thought you would find this interesting a female laborer on the cattle station is a Jillaroo.

I just love some of the words and phrases you Aussies use. I feel like Aussies and Americans have a lot in common.

Labels both define and confine us . They’re extremely limiting

I went to check out a "clean" used car once. It was obvious to me that my definition of "clean" was completely different than that of the person selling the car. My opinions and definitions are mine. Yours are yours. You and I happen to agree on almost everything and I am not a cowboy. I'm a biker and a retired trucker, and to me, the mind sets are close. You, Dewayne, have always been very upfront and truthful. I would love to meet you, possibly somewhere in Ohio before you head out west.
