What are the dark sides of living in Britain? If you’re contemplating moving to the UK to escape poverty, for education, for career advancement, or to raise a family, think twice before you hop on the train. There are negative sides of Britain that you need to consider closely. When people arrive in Britain in search of a greener pasture, they’re rudely shocked by those dark sides of living in Britain and also to discover that there are worst places to live in Britain. Today, I’m going to show you some of them. They’re actually among the reasons why foreigners who intend to live in Britain don’t stay.
I need to quickly tell you this: The listing here represents just my personal opinion about living in the United Kingdom and some might consider it a plus and not a minus.

I am a Nigerian living and working in the UK so I will give my perspective on some points: 1. Cost of Living: Try Switzerland or Scandinavia. 2. Unstable weather: It rains more in NY than London..Yes the UK has more grey days but that's no different to other oceanic regions (including Northern France, Germany, Scandinavia, Russia, etc). Also the UK winter are not as cold and summers are not as unbearable. 3. Food: You do NOT have to eat British foods. 4. Make friends: It takes a bit of time but you can get one. Overall I have loved my experience in the UK and would not trade it for anything else. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

If you set your mind to make it by setting your sight in the UK, it's very possible and quite easy. What is a absolute necessity, when coming to the UK and planning to live there for at least the next 15 years, then a job is essential! With rent a room style in London, one can easily save £200 from each month of wages and continue saving with that plan for the next 10 years, then you can ens up with close to 10 tens of thousands of pounds.

My advice: Unless you want to wake up in Accident and Emergency room, don't go out on late saturday evening and early Sunday morning. Don't look at an obviously drunk British person directly in the eye. You might end up in A&E as well. Oh, and don't give change to the homeless people. Ever. That's what food banks are for. If you want to meet a genuinely friendly British person first ask them if they believe in Jesus. If they say 'yes' there's a pretty good chance there going to be the most hospitable type of person you'll met on this here island. If they say no chances are you'll only ever be an amicable acquaintance. Or they might be stuck up snobs. Either way just don't bother carrying the relationship further than you have to.

I have lived in the uk for 15 years…i went to uni to study medicine then stayed on and worked there for years. I mainly only have good memories. Maybe I was lucky? But uni experience was good…my training and work as a doctor went very well…my salary was at least good..yes I paid taxes but they were reasonable and you got something in return. My work collègues and neighbours were super nice and helpful, I lived in a nice cul du sac in a posh area and had bought my house for a reasonable mortgage. I had enough disposable income to live comfortably and save! Again, I could be the exception to the rule but that’s my experience ! I didn’t mind the cost of living, the narrow roads or the small houses (mine was big!)..even food was great as you can easily find your favorite restaurants/food items..etc There are only two points that I agree on; the terrible weather and the difficulty to make friends. What’s worse than the bad gloomy rainy days is the difficulty to plan your life around the ever changing weather conditions; one day is sunny and gorgeous so you assume the following days will be the same and that summer is here to stay; WRONG!!! It can be windy, rainy and even cold literally the next day! As for making friends, I have made lots of good relationships but only four friendships, only two of whom were « white British ». Personally, I think the only reason is their personality and it has got nothing to do with racism or discrimination etc. To summarize, I loved everything about the UK apart from weather. And even though I am an Arab with olive Mediterranean skin, I tan almost everyday now back home in the sun, and this is due to years of sun deprivation 😭😭

Sounds like this was some years ago. Housing has become extortionate. I went to uni in London in the late 90s. It was affordable. I left London in 2016 as I was worse off as a professional in 2016 than I had been as a student in 97. That's insane. Thank G for WFH. I find that much of the UK is quite expensive to rent compared with other European countries outside of the capital/s. Uk is expensive, rent and mortgages a rip off, insurance a rip off. Health care is free and universal so much cheaper than the USA. Weather is varied and a lot of people enjoy the change in seasons. I agree with small houses and roads but that’s about it. Pretty much everything else I can relate to here in Atlantic Canada. It’s not that bad there. I found people very friendly and helpful and food in pubs especially excellent. If you stay out of London, prices are pretty comparable to major places in Canada. Weather is also not that bad. It rains more here where I live than there and also warm mild winters there where spring starts in February/March . Things don’t start growing here until May. Pros and cons to every place.

After living in Japan the language barrier can be tough being a newer foreigner as most locals don't speak English and are much more reserved than the people in the UK. When you ride the train or bus there is no talking loudly or even on a cell phone. The homes are much much smaller in Japan than UK some with only one room (some places have public showers/baths that your home may not have) so no I would actually have it easier living in the UK by comparison as it adopts more of the western culture standard I'm more familiar with. Now there are many more positives I do miss about Japan like the food, the futuristic high tech stuff, and actually made some friends there. I actually plan on buying a 2nd home in the UK because my wife is from there so it would be like having the best of both worlds (US and UK). I absolutely love the UK. Any major city you go to you'll find the dark rough parts in my case Chicago's Southside were cross fire shootings are common without warning. Regardless of location I only look at the person as a human being and their character. I try to make an effort to assimilate the best I can even though it's not perfect. I've learned a lot after traveling. What I've learned after visiting the UK for the first is that all dialect is not the same through out the UK and the local culture just like in the states the difference between NYC and Mississippi is day and night. There is no one size fits all when traveling to most countries. Every area may be more different than the other good or bad.

All of these you've mentions are true in certain areas in the UK. In cities like London is very expensive and probably harder to make friends especially if you are a foreigner, but british people are very approachable, nice people and very open minded and when you are close to them they will help you like a family. Remember London is very multicultural city unless you are a regular in that area then it's easy to make friends, because you see the same people all the time and the same if you live in towns its even easier to get to know people and make friends. Some areas in UK will have very narrow roads, because they preserve the old towns and buildings and makes it quaint and historic and the nicer the town the more expensive it is, especially the housing just like any other countries. Roads here may vary from every areas, but UK roads are very well connected and easy to get to anywhere. If you want wide roads go to motorways and its everywhere. UK has four weather, when it's summer here, it's just perfect temperature and when it's winter it's not that cold. There's no perfect country in the world but certainly UK is by far better than many countries in Europe and even in the world.

Toooòoooo many cars on the roads and public transport in the North is unreliable since Thatcher privatised it in the 1990s. London's public transport is much cheaper and more reliable by comparison. Not all English people will turn away from people to end a conversation, this was a wrong judgement to make. However, I have had complete strangers tell me their life stories whilst waiting for buses as some people will just talk none stop. English people seem to be kind and generous and friendly in the North, especially in Yorkshire.

One thing the guy didn't mention was the completely nuts expensive price of rail travel. I can fly to Italy or Ireland and back 4 times for the price that a return train ticket costs from Manchester to London.

Question: is the TV license the same thing as cable subscription in the US?

One very incorrect comment on this (although there are others) is no equal access to healthcare. We in the UK ALL have equal access to healthcare regardless of income, which is free at the point of use and includes; hospital, physician, specialist and mental health care. Not to mention free or heavily subsidised prescription costs which are around £9 ($12) regardless of the cost of the medication! It's paid for by taxation (which is cheaper than health insurance and is without co-pays and exclusions). Unlike in the US where there is no universal healthcare and the most common reason for bankruptcy is the cost of healthcare! The US also has some of the worst healthcare outcomes even though the cost of healthcare in the US is so expensive, and shorter life expectancies compared to the UK.

Of course the houses and roads are small, it’s a island with a high population compared to Europe and especially America. This also effects accommodation. The drinking culture is totally wrong as a generality. Not sure what time you spent here, not so sure you travelled very much by your general ideas. Saw more poverty when living in US.

The roads are small because they date from hundreds of years ago when people got about by horse and cart. The houses are small because developers make the most money by cramming as many onto a plot of land as possible without violating building regulations.

I agree, how ignorant to assume that bland food, and small homes and roads are small. Some are thousands of years old! Common ignorance of an American

When people eat junk foods and become obese they have all kinds of health problems and they struggle to walk and breath, they die young to me that is a dark side, because all they need to do is eat healthy foods. When people think going out and getting drunk to have fun when some don't even know what they are doing apart for vomiting and damaging their health. Is the dark side to me. Living in cold houses when the weather is nice outside getting vitamin D deficiency which affects your health and doesn't go away by sitting in the sun , having to take medication for the rest of your life because it's affected your bones is the dark side to me. I could go on, and on.

@@tiredgremlin6315 why are we not talking about the dark sides to Britain?
@tiredgremlin6315
@tiredgremlin6315 2 года назад
@@AnnaMaria-po5mk No we're not really to be honest. Those things you mentioned would be be described as dark sides of many places in europe. Besides, my inital comment was mostly based on parts where they mentioned the small roads and houses which are hardly dramatic enough to be called dark sides. They're more of an inconvenience to people visiting. I wasn't thinking on the grand scale of what you seemed to bring up. Saying stuff like 'the weather is unstable' then talking about just the rain? When there are places that have much less stable weather conditions?? A bit underwhelming. Thats all I meant.

Houses can be small but it depends where you live, but they are not too small to live in, and the doors are a standard size everywhere.

Almost all the “information” in this video is just silly, and in some cases points to poor research. The TV license fee is how the UK government funds public broadcasters (and this includes tv, radio and online). In 2019 this accounted for 76% of BBC’s operating revenue. I live in Canada where instead of paying a license fee for the public CBC broadcaster, we all pay towards CBC funding on our federal income taxes. The license fee isn’t a “dark side” of living in Britain, it’s just the funding model being used. If it wasn’t funded via the tv license fee, and was instead part of the general public’s income tax would that make you feel better? And on food, I went to England and Scotland in 2019 for over two weeks and couldn’t find bad food if I tried. From the restaurants to the supermarket everything was great. I think the “Britain has bad food” stereotype is long overdue for being laid to rest. Small homes? That’s pure opinion, and shouldn’t be in this video. I think North American homes are too large, encouraging wasted money, wasted utilities and hoarding.
