Personally, Alphys seems like she suffers from some serious anxieties and pressures herself a lot when it comes to pleasing others. So I feel like her focus on just completing her research and doing whatever it takes to be successful, was an intense fear of failure, and of disappointing Asgore, etc.

Two alternate/ similar theories: Firstly: the purpose of the experiment was to create human souls that could shatter the barrier; as monster souls may have seemed to be similar to human souls except for a lack of determination Secondly: Alphys didn't expect the souls and bodies to stay together, she only wanted to make monster souls persist after death, possibly to be put into Metaton-style bodies. Or maybe something far darker...

I think it relates to one theme of the game as a whole. When you do questionable things, it gets easier and easier until you're no longer aware that it may be bad. I think that is what happened.

Wasn't Alphys just continuing WD Gaster's experiment? From my understanding The first 17 entries are from him. Although I suppose Alphys could have worked under Gaster as an intern before he "fell into his own creation" . It seems like she was thrust into a high pressure situation that was already headed in a bad direction even if she didn't know it yet. The monsters that Gaster and Alphys were experimenting on may have been volunteers who knew full well what the experiments were and what the goals were. The "happy ending" statement seems to show that they did care about the monsters' well being and the question mark may be an expression of surprised confusion at the results.

My prediction/headcannon is that Alphys found the Determination research from Gaster, not knowing where the research was from, but filled with determination that it'll work. It's very clear that her self-trust was shot due to the results of the experiments. But that's just how I read into it.

Completely agree. I've commented this before in videos, but if you back out of a genocide run, killing everyone up until trying to kill Monster Kid, even if you kill Undyne, Alphys STILL wants to be your friend. And bare in mind that SHE ENJOYED WATCHING YOUR ADVENTURES THROUGH HER CAMERAS! I've given this a pass in the past. After all, it's cancelling an entire specific route for a neutral. But think about how Sans reacts when you kill Papyrus on a neutral route. You don't see him again until the Judgement Hall. And even if you spare her, Undyne will only befriend you if you don't kill anyone. Alphys could have been an unseen character if you killed more monsters than you befriend. Why would she want to befriend you unless she's: 1. A coward who wants to save her own skin by getting your trust and/or possibly killing you off in the process with Mettaton 2. Studying your behavior and uncaring of most of the monsters' deaths along the way

i just found out why determinations means to persist after death in undertale. take apart the word determination, de, and termination termination, or to terminate, means do destroy, or to kill, "de"means undo, not, or un. so the word determination litteraly means to "not die"

Toby Fox's IQ must be above average to think of a story this well hid behind a cover of a game that seems this simple. Like, I couldn't even think of a quarter of this. Jeez.. Undertale existed for a while, and yet there's so many theories, and nobody still knows as much as they think about this game.

We all have our fair share of inner demons. I know that for a fact. I've done things in life that I'm not proud of; though nothing near as bad as what Alphys did. It broke me down and made me hate myself because fact is, had I not realized my mistakes, I'd have been the very same kind of person I despise. I, too, am an anxious introvert combating depression simply because I'm afraid of people getting to know me. I'm afraid they'll hate who I am and judge me for having been a person I'm not anymore. I can't shake this fear now.

When endogeny's ambient track started playing at the end I was really scared because I thought the video was over and there must have been an endogeny right behind me Then I was like oh wait

I think Alphys was less uncaring about her patients, and more that she was aiming at freeing Monster Kind, which would arguably be a better achievement than just saving lives. Curing death sounds great and all, but it's not like this could be used sparingly, since I doubt you could hang out determination willy nilly even if there were no downsides, as we can only assume that there's a limited amount. I find it unlikely Alphys had lied about needing a Human and Monster soul to pass the barrier, since Toriel reiterates this point to Asgore when she shows up again in the True Pacifist route, and Alphys couldn't have told her, since Alphys sees Toriel for the first time in the True Pacifist route, as you can tell from the reaction when she sees her. Frisk dying could be it, but I think it could possibly be that, since we know for almost absolutely certain that Chara is with the player character through out the game, Chara's presence gave Frisk the power to pass the barrier. They say human souls can't absorb other human souls, but Frisk and Chara's situation could just be a special one.

Honestly I already figured this. But I don't think she was completely emotionally detached. The Monsters had fallen down, they were pretty much dead anyways, but if their souls could bring them all freedom then at least their deaths wouldn't be in vain. She wanted them to turn to dust so she could extract their souls, it's not that she didn't care about happened to them. Yeah she was reckless, she was desperate and she what she did was questionable. But I doubt she ever had a dark or sinister side to her.

My personal headcanon is such: 1: There is only 1 actual ending to Undertale. That the underground was erased by chara and frisks power. The reason I feel that is the case, is due to the resets, and point two in this headcanon list thing. Every ending can be reset, meaning that similar to flowey's story, unless something happens to make a reset impossible, it is inevitable it will eventually happen. And the only time that it is impossible for Frisk to reset, is when the underground is erased. but even then, (probably for game reasons) Chara does allow you to reset if you're patient, albeit with the subtle 'permanent' changes. 2: I reckon that in every neutral ending, frisk does die at the end. Given chara seemed unable to leave the underground alone (could have left, and lured other humans in without killing themself to do so that way), it does take a human and monster soul to escape. At the end of the genocide run, flowey destroy's asgore's soul, to trap you in the underground and protect the surface from you I expect. However this means it is also impossible for frisk to escape during the neutral endings for the same reason (likely to prevent them running away and leaving flowey trapped below). Given frisk never went back to the others, seems a strong bet to me frisk dies after defeating flowey. Which brings up point 3. 3: That 'resetting' is killing frisk. I reckon that the only actual part that survives a reset, is the player controlling frisk. Whenever a monster defeats the player, the human soul can be seen breaking apart. And given we get a glimpse to an underground moving on with its life after the neutral ending, thats why I feel that resetting is not /actually/ resetting anything. More as though 'ditching' frisk in that timeline, and moving on to another version to try something new. I'll admit, some of flowey's stuff would indicate otherwise since he remained aware of resets, and couldnt do so once we turned up. But if the player controlled the timeline in this way, and flowey cannot technically die, then it could as likely be that he is also resetting all he wants, but the flowey that is left behind alive in 'our' version of the timeline, is forced to live through it anyways. 4: which brings to the final headcanon I have for the lore. That the line about gaster 'falling into his creation' isn't talking about the determination extractor, or the core at all. It is talking about the underground itself. Gaster is the reason all of this happened at all. If determination is the power of a human soul, and all human souls can wield it, then either we are just particularly powerful, or something changed to allow 'resets' at all. and as said before, its not something any other humans seem able to do. Gaster was almost definitely the one who designed, or even built the first determination extractor. And created the core too. The core harnesses geothermal energy to create soul power for the underground. What I feel happened, is he succeeded in rigging the core to produce the same type of soul power, that human souls wield. And that two things happened. Being at the epicenter, he and likely the immediate vicinity was scattered by the power through space and time. But secondly, the entire underground was similarly damaged. Every 'past' even outside the underground seems to be fixed. And every event outside in the future also seems pretty fixed in time. Once everyone leaves the underground, the only two variations are whether you stay with toriel, and whether chara was along for the ride or not. Now that could just be gamey reasons again, since its the one 'true ending' but at the same time, I feel like the very nature of the underground is why time is so wonky down there, and that damage that may have been done to it through the experiments, eh? Can hardly blame chara for wanting to erase that nightmare during the one opportunity they have to do so when thinking of it that way. An endless nightmare so long as the underground exists. but idk, even typing all that out I can see some glaring holes in it now, but just how I like to think about it

Hey underlab, Merry christmas btw. I'm just here to give my two cents on the topic. But first let me just say that i loved your channel back when i was in the UT fandom. so here are my thoughts. 1. All of this was already debunked a year ago by the game itself, so why are you making a theory if the game canonicaly gives you the answers themselves? 2. I see you recycling older theories for new releases, now i don't have a problem with this since you need to stay relevant but what bugs me is that there is no new,fresh theory content that i see it's mostly bullcrap and insufficient research theories(like the UT2) so maybe you should make new theories if you still wanna continue and stay relevant. 3. Why are all your videos atleast 10+ mins long? in this video it took you 3 mins to start your very first claims... now i get it you're slowly dying and you need that sweet youtube money and ad revenue, But couldn't you atleast make the 10 mins worth? like providing counterclaims to your claims and arguing how your claims are superior and more canon? because it seems to me you are just stretching the videos for the ads i would rather watch a 30 minute theory with sufficient research and arguments than 10 minute theory with lacking evidence and support.

I don't really think some of these are true. She has moral, but she is an introvert as well. Also, she didn't lie about the soul thing. It is possible a human soul is enough to go through, but HER understanding as a monster to break the barrier requires both monster and human souls. It's not a lie, but maybe a result of ignorance.

Hai underlab I don’t know if you’ll see this but I love you and this is the best gaming channel out there keep doing what you do and never give up!!!

Well, no one realized it was possible to save a monster after they've Fallen Down. Once a monster is Fallen Down, they are known to be dying and unsavable. Determination was put into them because it was known that human souls persist after death because of their determination, so they thought if they injected the determination into the monsters that when they inevitably died their souls would persist like a boss monster's soul; then, they could slowly use those souls to eventually break the barrier. When the monster bodies didn't turn to dust, Alphys didn't understand why. To all knowledge, Fallen Down meant they were already dead but hadn't turned to dust yet. When we think of someone as dead, do we think it's possible to revive them? Once someone is dead, that's typically thought to be it. Alphys also was concerned because she promised to give the families the dust back for the funerals, but if they just stayed like that? Everything would be ruined; not only would the monsters be dead, but they wouldn't be able to have a proper funeral to respect them. Notice however though that when the monsters get up and are alive, Alphys planned to send them back rather than continue the original experiment. Alphys did not intend to revive them, true, but she also stopped the experiment when she realized they were alive and moving again. Now I'm really just speculating. Alphys thought that the worst that could happen with the experiment is it didn't work and they simply turned to dust like usual; she never realized that the power of determination would not only give them the will to live but actually cause them to not die at all. With the will to live, the monsters woke up instead of dying; however, the will to live doesn't mean whatever caused them to Fall Down had no effect. Without physical matter that wouldn't just turn to dust upon death, there were serious consequences. Perhaps the monsters' bodies were still trying to turn to dust because of how injured they were? The injury isn't magically gone because of the determination so the bodies may have continued to fall apart despite the monsters waking up because they now had a greater will to live. While their bodies couldn't stay together, they also couldn't turn to dust either though because their souls were still trying to live. A human, however, has a physical body that is not directly tied to their soul. When a human dies, their soul also has the will to live, but this doesn't affect the body at all. Since the body is separate from the soul, the determination does not effect the body. Therefore, the soul just continues to persist on it's own rather than forcing it's body to stay together. A monster's body is directly connect to their soul. Since a monster soul is weak due to a lack of determination, it cannot persist without a body well; it does create a weak magical body though for it to reside in. When the body is damaged though, it can eventually be damaged to the point where it cannot hold itself together anymore. It then falls apart, turning into the many magical dust particles that hold it together. Without a body, a soul cannot interact with their environment; at that point, living is seemingly pointless. That means there is not enough determination, or will to live, in order for a monster soul to persist after death. When the soul gains the will to live, all sorts of things happen. A Fallen Down monster's body is damaged to the point that it will not be able to hold itself together anymore. Even if the will to live is given to a monster soul, the soul cannot do anything to repair the body anymore, so the process of the body continues on like normal. However, the soul that now wants to live would naturally try to hold the body together and force itself to wake up, causing the delay and for the monster to wake up. Eventually, though, the body inevitably falls apart; but the soul refuses to let the body stop existing. The soul refuses to let it turn into dust, so instead, it turns into mush that cannot hold itself together rather than allowing itself to fall apart into dust. The soul continues to try holding the body together despite there not being enough matter holding the magic particles of the body together. Ok now I'm about to go off topic. Maybe a monster can have determination, but in less ammounts then humans, while they are alive? If their body is healthy then it wouldn't have a problem of falling apart. Look at Undyne; she's determined as ever to take the human down. She doesn't seem to have a problem with the determination until she is killed; with the will to live she remains awake, but her body is still damaged beyond repair. As a result, she begins to melt due to her own determination; however, since it is her own, maybe she has more control over it. As the determination in her fades, she eventually just allows herself to turn into dust. The amalgamates however were forcefully given the determination; as it is someone else's determination, they cannot simply let go of it. THis also makes me think about Undyne the Undying; Undyne the Undying recieves a straight slash that tears her in half. Due to this, she begins to turn into dust, but is determined to stop you. absolutely everything is at stake now. This isn't some situation where if she doesn't get the soul, they'll just have to wait for the next human but they'll mostly be fine. In this case, if the human doesn't die, they will literally destroy everything. Undyne cannot afford to lose; after turning into dust she suddenly pulls herself back together into a new form using her determination. Perhaps because it was only one slash, Undyne managed to repair the damage done by completely reconstructing her body? Maybe she also used the physical matter present in her armor to alter her monster body to have just enough physical matter to be able to repair itself and hold together more effectively. So essentially, she was able to find a different way to repair her body so that she could continue to fight. Because it is repaired, however, it can be damaged again to the point of dusting, unlike the amalgamates. The amalgamates' bodies are liquidfied at that point and already torn apart. You cannot tear water apart into it's basic components by slashing at it, can you? So whereas the amalgamates are dealing with broken, unusable bodies, Undyne actually repaired her body. The amalgamates are basically in a limbo while Undyne legitimately revives herself when she becomes Undyne the Undying. Reviving herself like this though would have to take a lot of soul power; her soul used determination to become more powerful, which may also explain why she suddenly becomes extremely hard to defeat. It's because her soul harnessed the power of determination to become more powerful. Another thing I noticed; her outfit has a human soul on it. It's upright like a human soul, as if that's pretty much what happened; maybe Undyne's soul harnessed the power of determination and so became more like a human's soul. We do know human souls can reside inside monster bodies after all; I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say Undyne's soul changed due to her determination. I mean she is all of a sudden an actual match against a human when humans are more powerful than monsters; she didn't become stronger than them through being smarter like Asgore is smarter battlewise than other untrained children. Undyne's magic suddenly became complex, faster. and stronger. Undyne gains the ability to do more attacks as well in general. Undyne's spears become more in number and are able to change speed at her will rather than only direction. Undyne is able to to spin her spears and summon a lot more without following 4 specific directions. Noticably more yellow spears then before. The red spear is no longer always the first. It seems like to me these are things that she couldn't do before because of her limited soul power. However, with determination making her soul stronger, her magic became more powerful too. *Wait there's more it just won't fit in one comment.*

Merry Christmas! (I have a theory) First of all, I think I heard some notes of the amalgamates' theme in GIYGAS' THEME!! Now the theory: Gaster represtents Giygas because both end up getting split. Both have great power, and Gaster is the one that is such strong he can bring the world back. (What happens in the end of the genocide route? You die. What happens when you die? You go to the void. I don't think I need to explain anything else.)

You take technicalities in the writing of certain instances in the game that Toby didn't intend, and can still make new theories years after Undertale's release. Dang, well done 👏

You know, there was a way for the amalgamates not to turn into, well, amalgamates; instead of determination from a soul that’s never died, Alphys kinda didn’t know about the existence of Undead Determination, which is more powerful due to the fact that you would need enough determination to live after death. Sadly, the only person/monster in the underground with that determination was corrupted, and taken away from the Undertale dimension. To know who it is/was, look at my comment on the OST So Cold, that should clear things up for you guys. So I don’t really blame Alphys, she just didn’t know that there was a second type of determination, and made a huge difference in what would’ve happened to the fallen monsters. Frisk was probably on the other side of the barrier after the Neutral route final boss, bypassing the need for that.

the SOUL bits fell on us and probably still got absorbed, or we escaped whilst the Omega Flowey fight happened due to the distortion of space and time, or the one most likely, which I like is Frisk dies after the whole destruction of everything in the barrier for the fight, all the human SOULs including Frisks shattered from exhaustion, being pushed past their limits in that battle of gods. Mah, they were corpses, they just hadn't broken their SOULs yet, and nobody knew that a SOUL no longergiving signals would still have any memories or ability to recover.

Honestly I feel this theory almost reachs Ness = Sans levels. You can't base a theory over her being the opposite of whatyou want to prove as evidence. Also her diary seemed non emotional? If you actually read a experiment diary you will thing a machine wrote it. She even used emoticons for crying out loud. ... Thank you. I swear people doesn't need to justify her so much to like her. It's pkay to like her but that doesn't erase the fact that that she did in the lab was not necessary, was not something good, and she DID have a choice. Yet she experimented on her kin. If you want to save someone who's dying you use medical knowledge on them, things whose result you KNOW. Experiments are different, and she did that purposefully. It doesn't matter if she had an idea that the result could be bad, she didn't know it, because it was an experiment. So, she did horrbile things. The one only thing i dislike from this game is the fact that Alphys doesn't receive proper punishment for her actions. Jail, i say

How do we know that " Mystery Man " is actually gaster? It could be anyone else. maybe you play as gaster but I don`t have any evidence for it.
