Tyson Gay is amazing. Hes so short compared to Bolt and managed to be as fast as Bolt at Top Speed. Imagine running 9.69 and losing to Bolt in Berlin. Crazy.

I think the pressure of the rounds and qualifying saps so much energy that its rare for an athlete to do a PR in the final. But with these one off diamond races an athlete can be fresh and rested without worrying about qualifying rounds = PRs

I love seeing Jetter cross the line so smooth.

Jeter was riding high from the previous week’s 10.67. She lined up thinking she’d break the world record and went for it. She ran just as hard the following week but it was into a headwind and managed “only” a 10.83.

I don't know how you react to this human effort. But, I get emotional, tears well up... I can't pinpoint why? It's possibly watching these individuals pushing themselves against all the outside forces and pushing aside any and all psychological barriers and reaching a goal they set! To be the first and reap the prize of being the fastest and record the fastest or lowest elapsed time through 100m's... As they are running, the clock is ticking and if they can stop that clock sooner than all the others they are the fastest!!! It's beautiful! And to top it off these individuals know that the window of time is very short to accomplish such a feat! They know that each day they age a little more and a little more. So, that's why these events are truly so special to be present and witness. And maybe their offspring will carry the gene and continue to push the barriers and break their parents records? God bless these athletes and all of you who live to achieve great things! †

Wow these mind blowing historical speeds and two of them are from a Little Rock, amazing.

I hope I live to see some genetic freak like Bolt reach 30 mph. The kids are out there, and they don’t even know it yet. Bolts mid race speed was the best of all time. He even improved his reaction time to the point that his total sprint excellence obliterated all competition into a race for 2nd place.

This is a phenomenal race but I do think Blake’s 9.69 is the best 9.69 race ever because he ran it in a headwind. Also I think Gay would actually beat 9.69 in Berlin if the race did not have a headwind ( yes and bolt in that race would beat 9.58 Insane!). The only problem in the race in China is that Powell did not try at the end to beat gay and I think if both men tried hard at the end both would beat 9.69

The 68 Olympics had a few records that remained for years as well. Long jump(Beamon) and 400 (Evans) stood for over 20 years each. I tip my hat to both athletes that were clearly ahead of their time...and, oh yeah, Bolt! The man amongst men!

In training most athletes run faster than there competition time due to being more relaxed. From experience in competition the tension is high so in some cases it limits the athletes full capabilities. So your hypothesis could be thru, when under that type of pressure of losing it kind of makes u more relaxed in some ways

some runners can go godmode when people least expect it.

Once a runner reaches an erect position it’s a whole new game. Some runners aren’t just good on the first meters which requires a different technique. In this phase you’re better of with quick short steps and of course a good reaction, whereas the later phase requires wide powerful ones. Depending on personal strength, athletes focus on certain aspects in their technique. It could be that adrenaline is a certain factor, since I would imagine that good starters produce more adrenaline right at the beginning. Concerning the development of records it should be kept in mind, that not only runners become better but also tracks, equipment and certain performance enhancers.

Dix ran 19.53 while losing to Blake’s 19.26 and at the time only Bolt Blake and Johnson has faster times, Lyles has run faster now as well. Underrated performance.

I quite like this theory. Back in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics 100m final , Donovan Bailey had a poor start and ended up breaking the world record with a 9.84 sec run.👍

The same thing happened to Michael Johnson in his 200m world record... He stumbled at the start.

The theory of adrenaline makes sense. Back when Michael Johnson set the world record in the 400m he also had a horrible start and then absolutely owned the race so I definitely think there's something to that theory

I believe that due to modern technology the shoes and track are the reasons for this AMAZING time. When you consider Jessy Owens , and Bob Hayes set World Records on Cinder Tracks. For those of you who don’t know, Runners used to run on gravel before Synthetic tracks were invented. After 1964 Olympics Synthetic tracks or Tartan increased the times drastically. Imagine if they had Synthetic tracks in the 36 Olympics or the shoes from Nike or Puma? With these new items speed was obtained and held longer because there was no resistance. The Runner literally bounced to the finish line. Also the shoes were much lighter.

One thing that makes a person pushing himself/herself even more than their trainings is the challengers, look at Bolt 9.58 WR who's in the field, it has Powell, Gay, Gatlin.. Look at Thompson Herah new PB 10.54 who's in the field, its Fryser Pryce and and the ego one I forgot her name 😅.. Your challengers can give you much more power

Well, we need an updated video. Elaine. Thompson. Herah. It broke my heart that she broke our Queen Flo-Jo’s Olympic Record… But the Queen is still the Fastest Woman in the World since her World Records still stand at 10.49 for the 100m and 21.34 for the 200m. If anyone is going to break these records that have held strong for over 3 decades, it will be Herah. She’s simply amazing with a very promising career ahead of her. But I would be lying if I said I actually *want* her to break them! I just wish Flo-Jo was still alive today to see her greatness is still dominating despite all the advancements in sport science and technology which has clearly helped the runners of today. Flo-Jo is the definition of a legend (and not in the watered down sense of the word that’s used so often).

Id like to add that bolt actually ran 9.63 in 2012. 3 years later. so an athlete has since run faster than gays time after that day

This performance is not as massive a deal as it seems. People seriously underestimate the HUGE effect of the conditions on a short sprint race. The advantage of the wind in these 100m races, where the max +2.0m/s wind gives a man a +0.1s advantage-is massive. Gay did this with the perfect possible conditions, a notoriously extremely fast track + the absolute maximum allowable wind. His 9.71s with a 0.9m/s wind in coming second to Bolt was actually a better run. Blake's 9.69 was also runt with zero wind conditions (actually -0.1m/s if I remember correctly). If Bolt rant hat same 9.58 race in these conditions, he'd have put up a possible 9.49

It's pretty interesting that Gay ran this 9.69 just 1 month after Bolt's 9.58! Two things gave him the incentive to run this ridiculous time. 1) A month earlier Gay had ran 9.71, but it was only good enough to place second! (how demoralizing ). 2) In that same race (if you watch carefully ) you'll notice that in just a few of it being over you'll see Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell laughing and celebrating and I'm sure that Gay saw this and ignited him in an unprecedented way to get revenge on both of those guys and he did.

Ben Johnson will always be the best sprinter ever, he slowed down and lifted his hand with 15 meters to go.

Now, athletes needs to think of running at 45km/h. In that way, they can break the world record.
