Irene Dunham was set to graduate from the high school that day but felt ill and stayed home. At the time of this video's release, she is still alive at 114 and is the 3rd oldest woman in the US. She has talked about that day in interviews. What a bizarre stroke of luck for her.
It makes you almost paranoid. Especially when you have a family. That evil lurks around every corner. I go to extreme lengths to protect my son and my wife. Because I know that “people” like this disgusting bastard exists.
I once met a survivor, who was missing a leg. His brother died. The lansing hospital where the wounded were taken echos the stories of the pediatric nurses who, upon hearing of the disaster, reported for duty and worked for days trying to care for all the children. Heartbreaking.
Yes. They published a book commemorating the 100th anniversary of the hospital and this event included quotes from some of the families and the nurses. ( adult too not just pediatric)
A lot of the children where knocked out, my great grandma was a survivor, she said her and a lot of children actually remember being tossed in the air, and most of them lost consciousness here, so thankfully most of them really didn't suffer in fear to badly, and the ones who did pass where most likely "Asleep" before they succumb to suffocation from being burred alive... still very tragic and no child deserves this. She thankfully was dug out of the rubble by her father, who saw her feet and initially as mentioned, started to identify his daughters body by her shoes. when he dug her up he realized she was still alive and she soon regained consciousness. The way she always described it was "A gift from God" that most victims passed out and didn't suffer as much or died quickly on impact. But yes, that is truly sad and tragic for the victims who didn't have this easy and painless death, may they rest in peace. :(
When he was younger, Kehoe was suspected of murdering his stepmother by rigging the stove so it would explode. The stove did explode and she burned to death while Kehoe watched. His neighbors accused Kehoe of sabotaging the stove. He was simply an evil, dangerous individual. Thank you for covering this story!
hes a psychopath. its that simple. there are millions of them even currently with different levels of psychopathy. your doctor is probably a psychopath, or your lawyer, even your neighbor.
Unfortunately, by ignoring mental health & not treating people, this will only continue this cycle-it’s terrible to see this happening constantly & knowing mental health care could benefit those that feel at their wit’s end.
@Anita Evans sounds like he had antisocial personality disorder, which doesn't respond well to treatment. It's an ingrained personality disorder. Psychopaths and sociopaths are part of antisocial personality disorder.
This is very personal to me. My grandfather was 5 months old at the time and had two siblings lost that day. I heard my great grandmother would always talk about her "Millie". The brother and sister, Robert and Emilie (Amelia), were they last two children to get headstones for their graves in 2009.
I’ve never heard about this school massacre before, thank you for covering this horrific case. There have been so many school massacres in America and non of them should be forgotten.
He wasn't mentally ill, he was a narcissistic, evil man, who killed 45, and wounded over 50 people, simply over pennies. In one book I read, a mother was seen with a dead little girl either side of her, her youngest dying in her arms, when Kehoe pulled up he called people over to help him ' unload things that would help'. Her eldest son was killed by shrapnel from the dirty bomb, as he rushed to help 😔❣️
Thank you. Someone else who recognized he was s narcissistic psychopath, who wanted to play the "hero" in the aftermath of his destruction. Classic signs of manipulation and grandiose desire to be seen as a helper for the very thing he caused.
@@gaidhliglass Don't think he would have shown with a second bomb if he wanted to play hero. Plus all the damage he did to his farm in the lead-up. Yes, he's a narcissistic psychopath. But he was there to cause as much damage as possible before he died himself, nothing more. This was his "blaze of glory" where he lashed out at those he perceived to have wronged him.
I'm so glad you covered this. We like to pretend that school attacks and other massacres didn't happen until Columbine. This problem is much older than 30 years
There was a public shooter in the late 40s, i forget but there was a guy in Texas. Brain tumours and aggression. 1st August 1966 up a tower sniping. They caught up with him and shot him.
@@Stroke2Handed it was an excuse a ‘UK girl’ gave ‘as to why ‘she she took a gun to school and shot. As in the Boomtown Rats song ‘I Don’t Like Mondays.” And goes on to say; I’m going to shot them all down.
A while back I heard an interview (maybe via Storycorps) with one of the survivors. That was the first time I’d ever heard of this tragedy. All those children suffered terrible survivor’s guilt and PTSD. Meanwhile the detail of that evil made wiring his horses legs together so they couldn’t escape the fire… is horrifying 😮
The cruelty towards animals should never have been overlooked. Surely wiring his horses legs and burning them was no precedent. The headlines seemed to indicate that he tortured his "stock". In addition to shooting his neighbor's dog. This man had a bloodlust. He seemed to have partially planned to escape, maybe even after his second explosion. He had separated out his silver and assets. He had backup plans and destroyed most evidence. Diabolical is not a scientific term, but this was not some feeble or tortured mind, in slightly different circumstances, he may have disappeared or even collected insurance under an alias. In terms of criminal acts, he was way ahead of his time. He seemed to have picked an innocent community suitable for his sadistic predatory ways and superficial persona.
@@allengordon6929 Happens in other countries too. I would guess that the Taliban, for example, has killed more kids than Americans have. They kill kids just for going to school. Foreign parents do honor killings of their kids.
He didn't like the fact that he had to pay taxes to pay for a school when he had no children; but he had no problem getting an education from a school paid for in part by the taxes of people who had no children.
But school may have been a place where he learnt to see himself as a useless, no-hoper. These days we discriminate against boys but we encourage girls. Most massacres are done by men. Schools are places where boys are taught to despise themselves. Many massacres happen at schools. Could we give the same encouragement to boys that we give to girls? It might bring these despairing massacres to an end.
I wonder if school was a place where he learnt to see himself as a failure. Teachers used to beat boys at school. It was common for children to be humiliated for making mistakes. Boys were often mistreated at home, too.
@@tracesprite6078 they would not have been taught anything like that back then. Remember men were the end all be all of society back in those days. Women couldn't even open a bank account. Even if your assessment of modern schooling was correct it would be absolutely anachronistic to assume his education was like that.
@@tracesprite6078 this idiotic comment brings to mind the statement, "when you're used to privilege, equality feels like oppression". No one is discriminating against boys. Equal footing is not discrimination.
How awful for all of the people in the community who saw clues in the days and weeks before the crime, yet had no idea that what they saw was a piece of something so monstrous to come.
Those without children who are angry about taxes to pay for schools forget that everyone benefits when kids are educated. They’d be more angry when crime rates go up later. Direct benefit isn’t the only benefit
@@user-yv1fh3fc8y That's not an answer. My kid goes to private (secular, obviously). I still am happy to pay taxes for public schools to be good because we don't live in a bubble. I want my kid to live in an educated society, be treated by educated doctors, have educated friends and associates. Everyone deserves a good education.
Absolutely right. People fail to realize even if you don’t have kids or grandkids in the schools, eventually those kids become adults and you WANT AND NEED them to be well educated and competent, so our society progresses not regresses. Communities fail when you let kids fail. Absolute fact.
7:40 Weirdly enough, Kehoe had more than enough assets to avoid foreclosure, if not to pay off his mortgage. He seemed to be determined to play the victim, somehow, by destroying or discarding everything that he owned, before he threw away his life.
Sorta like John List. Debt was mounting so he killed his family but there were assets worth enough to significantly pay it off. If not entirely. I think debt was the final straw for them, not the catalyst though.
When people feel overwhelmed and deeply disliked and hopeless, then they can behave in a despairing way. Peter Lloyd's book "Stand by Your Manhood" may give some insights.
My mother in law lived in Bath. Her mother was American Indian and father Scottish. On night before this massacre a cross was burned in their yard. They decided to move. So my MIL was kept home to help pack. The others kids wanted to stay home, too. They had been taunted as being half breeds. Then they heard the explosion. My husband said the one set of bombs did not go off because a kindergarten er saw a wire and used his scissors to cut the wire. I heard stories about it from my MIL and her sisters. The trouble to find enough coffins. They described the long row of small caskets.
@@intrepidelf seems like a combination of both revenge on the town and it’s community who’ve built the school and anger about having to pay taxes for children which aren’t his. Just all around heartbreaking.. may all the victims Rest In Peace 🖤
@@NewGothOnTheBlock So he didn't want children to be educated? Those children would be doctors, teachers, police officers, etc, etc, etc an educated society is a great society.
@@williegordon9188 I completely agree with you on that. The children would’ve contributed in their own ways as they grew up. Wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t even think about that in his state of mind
Finally, I've been asking channels to feature this for ages now! It's a local case I've known since I was little and it has always horrified me. My mom learned about it when she stumbled upon a section in a cemetery that had a bunch of young kids with the same day on their old gravestones. They deserve to have their story known.
Well, I Never, thank you for doing a video on this. A friend of mine was the worst injured that lived through this. He is deceased now. He told me all about this massacre. He considered Kehoe the devil himself.
This is terrifying. More terrifying is it still pales next to Aberfan, when the coal company killed ALL of the children in the entire town and got away with it. They crushed and buried the only Primary school in town with a mountain of coal slush and nearly every parent for miles lost their kids at once. I think rescuers managed to pull one survivor out. They’re called “the lost generation of Aberfan”. Corporations can kill anyone and walk away.
I think you're exaggerating when you say that ALL the children in the town were killed. There were a few survivors at the primary school, although admittedly only about 25 out of 150. Plus there were older, secondary school age, children in the town and I'm not aware that any of them were killed. Also, unlike the Bath Township school explosion Aberfan wasn't premeditated. Nobody from the coal company climbed up the hill and deliberately pushed the coal slush down onto the school.
6 adults and 29 children survived the disaster. The money raised to help the families was taken by the coal voard to pay for the clean up. Every year, we pay our respects to the 114 children lost to the sludge. In Wales we never forget x
Greed for money and contemptous disregard for (the safety) of others was responsible. It was not murder.. It was manslaughter aggravation.. Such aggravated manslaughter deserves the same punishment as murder but it was not murder...
People like Kehoe still exist. There are still narcissistic people who are so self-centered that they don’t believe that a community should help children or their communities most vulnerable.
Yeah, it's unfortunate how many of those people are currently in positions of power. There's no exact solution, but there are things we could do to prevent more.. and unfortunately, nobody in power is willing to take action.
This is such a tragic story. Why kill the children? If he'd done it the day after only the building would have been damaged and he still would have demolished it as he wanted. Senseless and wicked. A sick, sick man!
Heartbreaking case😭 a other school disaster is aberfan in Wales where waste from the coal mine buried the village including the school I think 2 teachers and 116 primary students died. It happened in the the 60s I was not born but my mum remember it well
My dad, who was a member of Rotary in the West Country, just across the Severn bridge from Aberfan, which is in Wales. He and the other Rotary members took up a collection for the people of Aberfan. They raised a lot of money. There was a huge outpouring of sympathy for the stricken village.
Thank you for bringing this up. I thought i would read the comments first as i was going to mention this. A truly tragic disaster, may those little ones rest in peace and forever be remembered.
one of my friends in Lansing is a photographer. She has been to the site several times to take photos, and swears she has heard the sounds of screaming children, especially when it's dark out.
Being from Michigan, and having a grandmother who was 6 when this happened and lived not to far from it, it always stuns me that people don't know about the Bath school bombing
@@JeanPaulBeaubier really? I'm surprised. But then again my family is huge and has been here since long before it was a state so historical things about the state fascinate me
That’s because Columbine happened and caused a media frenzy and circus that wound up Damaging To tell what actually happened that day except for the survivors themselves as they were the only ones truly there
I grew up in Bath. Going to school there in the 1960s and 1970s, it was something we had to think about - in the back of our minds. Arnie Bernstein did an outstanding job on his book, as did Gene Wilkins and Grant Parker (and Monty Ellsworth too).. I remember the old school standing, I even had a few classes in the building. I remember it having a heavy sort of feeling in the building, like intense energy. My husband was a custodian in the school, too. This documentary is very well done. Thank you for keeping the memory alive. Tragic and horrific as it is, they should not be forgotten.
I'd love it if you covered the New London school explosion (My school). Nearly 300 people died in that explosion, six times as many as the Bath disaster. The NL school explosion was an accident, which I think seems to have contributed to people forgetting about it, but it's very tragic and it's sad to me that few people even know about it.
What an incredibly awful story! I don't believe I've ever heard of this event, and am thankful for all your hard work putting this presentation together. Those children do need to be remembered!
Persecution complex combined with unfettered avarice and narcissism. It seems incomprehensible to most normal people, but his motives are coherent. He merely had no empathy or value for others' lives. The only thing important to him was himself and what he wanted.
This is so interesting! I'm from Michigan (just over an hour from Bath) and have never heard this! I love that you cover things that aren't always told. Thanks!
You hadn't?! I live near Port Huron and I knew about it but I can't say where I heard about it. Probably a book I found at a used book store. They certainly don't teach it in school! Not even in college Michigan History. They should.
As you said, attacks on schools are amongst the most devestating, senseless, and evil tragedies there are. My heart goes out to all the victims throughout the years
I'm so glad I came across this! I am from/grew up in Bath and my family still lives there (I don't). It's something we were taught about in school growing up but never have seen anyone else even know about it! 🤯
It's unreal this keeps happening. As we watch this what is happening around the world is astonishing. 💔 thanks for your informative and reapectful videos
The 1-week wait for a new episode felt like months. But I know that a high-quality program like this takes time to be produced, so I really don't mind the wait. It's always worth it anyway. Thank you.
Wow! Kehoe killed the innocent civilians trying to rescue the children and teachers who were buried under the rubble just because he can't accept defeat from the election prior to the massacre. I feel so sad for the children and also to the teachers and innocent people who were killed by the first and second bombing of the school. Rest in peace to the victims.
His treatment of defenceless animals was a big red flag, which continues largely ignored to this day by most law enforcement, to great cost. Evil man, those poor children.
To do this to innocent children is beyond redemption. Why was he allowed anywhere near a school when everyone suspected him of the murder of his stepmother? May God comfort all those affected by his actions.
Two different explosions I'd recommend are the school in New London, Texas, & the Texas City disaster. They'd both make interesting videos. This was very interesting, & sad. I had never heard of it, & that surprised me. As always a great job!
@@tracesprite6078 first, I'm referring to accidents. Second horrible tragedies have happened in other countries. Look up the atrocities against native children being forced to boarding schools where they were tortured, & murdered in Canada!!! Michael Moore is a blowhard.
Thank you for capturing this piece of history. This happened not too fsr from my hometown, albeit many decades before. My father told me the story as he was a Bath policeman many years thereafter. He told me of the survivors he met from that incident. So harrowing...Bernstein's book was superb!
Born and raised in Michigan, grew up in Lansing , don't plan on ever moving out of state (because I love it here too much), been to Bath many times and know people from the area, and I've never ONCE heard of this. Idk if this is normal everywhere but when I was in elementary school we got history lessons on our state, even had a whole history book for it, and this tragedy was never mentioned. I'm absolutely appalled and almost ashamed to be a Michigander and never once having heard of this horrible disaster. I clicked on this video because I was curious, who knew I would be walking away with knowledge about something that happened in the state I love so much despite living here all of life. Thank you for making this video, I can't believe that something like this has seemingly been swept under the rug. This was a more interesting video for me than I thought it would be
Sometimes you learn things and wonder why you didn't already ("The color of law") People in Michigan Minnesota and Wisconsin are told of wild fires. It isn't hidden. (You might day housing segregation is. All kids are told of busing, and school desegregation. No one is told about housing.)
I remember hearing about this a few years ago and got a good book on it that shocked me with how short it was. I thought it was going to be disappointing, but it was excellent. I believe it was Arnie Bernstiens. There were parts I had to put the book down cause it made me choke up. Even telling them I feel depressed. The stories of the families and this small-town show that evil can reside anywhere, and you can never tell when someone will do something. This was in an era before even radio was widespread, and sometimes darkness will rise in the human heart.
This event has always been especially eerie for me, because I attended a middle school (Dexter McCarty Middle School, Gresham, Oregon) which someone attempted to blow up whilst I was attending it, back in 1992. The strategy for this one involved a single pipe bomb attached to the primary boiler of the heating system. Had that bomb detonated, the boiler almost certainly would have gone as well.
This series is just SO FRIGGIN GOOD! The production value and research is just on point. This channel has to continue to grow! I really look forward to these videos
Two of my pet hate’s are people that hurt children and animals they are defenceless and rely on us I just can’t comprehend how people kill children and animals so so sad 😭 this is a great tragedy Rest In Peace little babies
What a horrible insane man. He didn't want to just kill at the school, he intended to kill the town. by destroying the younger generation There must be a special place in hell for such a hateful man. I've heard this sorry tale before but yours is the best rendition so far.
This was a horrifying story. I had heard of this before and saw several other RU-vid channel's presentations. But yours adds details that I have never heard before. This man was a phsycopath.
Thank you for bringing this tragedy to light, had never heard of it. Kehoe was the definition of evil, killing so many innocents because he was paranoid, senseless!
This was a wonderful video of a really heartbreaking situation. I've been watching videos of this tragedy since Saturday evening. Even though what Charles Lindbergh did was quite an amazing achievement, it's sad that people (especially the media) can forget something so utterly devastating to the point that it was nearly forgotten in history. Thank you for this video. Job well done! Also, I think Charles Lindbergh should be further researched, investigated, and talked about. There were a lot of horrible things he's done that still isn't talked about quite enough today. More people should be made aware of this man they call a "hero". Sure, his achievements are well documented, but his other acts (Nazi sympathizer, anti-semite, cruelty to his son, having several more children with several more women in Germany despite being married) should not be ignored. Before anyone attacks me for what I said, I implore you all to research the situation for yourselves. I wouldn't say these things about him had I not done the same. I once saw him as a hero too.
this was an act of pure hate, one thing i disagree is that, even mentally unstable people can do complicated tasts, arent sociopaths or psychopaths mentally unstable? trust me they function just fine. just because they dont give a crap about humanity doesnt mean they cant function.
Psycopaths and sociopaths more often than not are more stable and function better than us, they simply don’t feel empathy or remorse….and Kehoe was exactly like that.
@@LucienSabre they feel nothing, its not just empathy and remorse, they dont feel fear they dont care about people, you live or you die they dont give a shit about you. they wanna see the entire world to end up in flames to put it simply.
@@vio3366 the most dangerous are the ones who are actually smart, and im not talking about average folk smart, i mean REALLY smart, i personally dont consider IQ to be measuring intelligence but rather perspective, but for someone who do believe IQ = intelligence i would consider someone with an IQ of 140 and above very dangerous.
There is a difference between mentally ill people and insane people. I think the video just said insane people can't carry out complicated plans. But I agree sociopaths and psychopaths can carry out plans, they are often geniuses actually.
It’s bizarre that I was so excited when I found you did a video on this, I’ve wanted to learn more about this for years, but never got around to it. Thank you for your research 🤘
Psychopath is right! “Why should I pay for a school when I have no children?” Nowadays we remind people who gripe that way that the children going to school now will be their future employees, tradespeople working on their homes, hospital workers taking care of them when they’re sick, public works employees maintaining the infrastructure where they live, caregivers helping them in their old age, and so on. To Kehoe, my reply would be much the same. One of those children might have grown up to be his apprentice electrician or a vet to care for his animals. But his argument about taxes and not having children was just an excuse. He sounds like a self-important son of a b1tch who was angry that the whole township didn’t hold him the “high regard” he felt was owed to him.
He sounds exactly like a Republican! Well, before they went totally nuts anyway. I have heard that from my Grandfather in the past I think. I can't believe he'd still be a Republican now though. They really are no longer Republicans but their own ignorant bat shit crazy party.
Apparently contentious US school board meetings are not only current, but also historical. Children should never be victims of adult problems. Thank you for your videos. ✌
I read about this quite some time ago but I didn’t garner nearly as much information as I did during your video. I’ve commented before on my appreciation of your narration skills. The facts are clear, concise, and you lay everything out in an essay-like manner that is easy to follow, and has personality with your own style. Thank you, again for your work kind sir.
It never ceases to blow me away at how really evil people can be for whatever reason. And the extreme to which they will go for revenge. My goodness how tragic. 😔
You are a Very Good narrator who holds a person's attention extremely well with your original and particular style and inflection. The fact I'd never heard of this surprises me for many reasons particularly because of my Love for history.
I used to live near there in the 80's. I remember being told that Kehoe considered the man he blew up as being most responsible for his "betrayal." He was hunting him, as he knew he would be there. Kehoe was obliterated, leaving only a string of intestine dangling from a power line. The site was eerily quiet at night in the 80's. Only the sounds of the wind and rattling of the ropes on a flag pole taunted the night. Still a sad place...
I knew about this tragedy from reading vintage news articles, but your video does a far better job. The articles focused on the farmer, not so much the children. Can you cover the New London School Explosion?
Thank you, I was born in the early 80's and a bunch if these stories are well before my time but I love historical information and we we're not taught about many of these stories despite them being important historical events its a shame honestly. Thank you for taking the time to provide and interesting and engaging form of historical events very grateful.
This terrible incident has raised one other question in my mind. Could the fact that newspaper attention was taken away from the enormity of this tragedy have anything to do with the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby? The man executed for it always maintained his innocence.
No. Lindbergh was involved in some way. He believed in Eugenics and was not happy at all that his son had Ricketts. He could have framed Hauptman or paid him to participate. Chuck was a real ahole so I doubt he even heard about this and if he did he would have forgotten it by the next day.
I just came across your channel today, I really like your no nonsense style of presenting your videos. Also, kudos on the pronunciation of the ch in Schechter. 👍
Finally, someone covering the subject without going on a random tangent about how much they hate *insert somewhat well known political figure here*. I'm always glad to come back to this channel. Continue with your stories. Thank you.
This ahole really does sound like an Old School Republican though. He didn't want to pay school taxes because he didn't have kids, he lost that city election.......blah blah. His motive for this was because he was pissed about money issues and losing an election. Just saying I couldn't ignore what his complaints were. I'm also pretty sure I heard my Grandfather say the same thing about school taxes years ago.
Such a cowardly man if there ever was one!! He targeted the very heart of innocence…children. I hope all lost & affected RIP🕊 🔥🔥Kehoe🔥🔥 I hope you got exactly what you deserved. 😡
The thought of those horses being deliberately restrained is nauseating. His prior cruelty to animals was a warning signal. Evil does exist and the innocent, both human and animal will invariably suffer.
