Really good video~ I've been a mute in VRChat for over 4 years now, and you can feel disconnected at times from things, but you can still have a blast and get involved with lots of things too as a mute ^~^ such an amazing game
RYAN! It's been so long since I've seen that name back in the days with Nagz and I loved seeing you. After playing the game for 5 years and going from Mute to Unmute several times and learning sign, It is true you can have an amazing time without saying a single word. Some people who don't say anything are the most expressive of them all.
I stay muted in vrchat most of the time, and im not sure how i found out about vrchat sign since it never really came up in my mind but now im so happy that i learned it because if i never learned some vrchat asl, i wouldnt have met the people i know now. Sometimes people dont understand me and i need to talk but i have some friends that ive never used my voice with so im scared if they hear my voice lol. But to whoever reads this i totally recommend learning, even if its vr sign or real life sign, just learn it if you really want to! Its super fun to be able to understand what people are saying to you. Depends on how i feel a certain day, if im not feeling well or not liking hearing myself i dont talk but if i dont care ill talk. I wont say im selective mute or mute because i feel thats not the right thing for me to say, so instead i say thst im either mute by choice or that my mic is muted but even when its muted im not talking. If anyone read this thank you and have a good day/night whoever you are
I am a mute from vrchat, I suffer from social anxiety and even though I don't talk that much I still enjoy being with people, life gets lonely when you are a mute but hearing people and just listening to them can improve my day
I try to talk to mute people, well everyone on vrchat who wants to have a conversation that is not annoying little kids, I have met a few mute people and just with their gestures I get them, still ge nice to talk but everyone has their reasons
I have a friend who is selective mute and because of him I’ve started to learn some vrchat asl and my main avatar is made for asl in case I do come across someone who is deaf or mute
A couple of my friends on Vrchat are actual IRL Mutes and so I began learning sign language and just knowing the alphabet you can already get so far. Being able to communicate to those people through sign language gives them so much joy to see random players taking there time to learn there language. So if you want to start learning sign language I do suggest going the worlds listed in the video because they are the best and most used ones. Go out there and have some fun and keep learning new things ! :3
We ran into a mute that wanted to play cards against humanity with us so we read there cards on there turn, it was pretty fun and hopefully they felt comfortable
I have met a few mutes over my relatively short time playing VRChat. I even have a couple in my friends list. At first i found it hard to communicate with them and sometimes that is still the case. However I have big respect for the mutes. Behind ever avatar in VRC is a person. That person is unique in their own way. And if they are mute than there is nothing wrong with that. VRC is a place where everyone can be who they want to be.
i'm a mute in vrchat most of the time, at first just because of social anxiety, but now i just legitimately enjoy the challenges and experience of communicating nonverbally and with my body. but my avatar also has four face textures i can swap between whenever so that helps a lot too.
I absolutely LOVED seeing you make a video on this! When I play VRChat, it's usually late at night and I have to stay quiet, so I've been slowly learning ASL! It's not much really, but I can say "hi" and "how are you" to others and have made some good friends because of it :3
It's fantastic that you can learn sign language through VRChat and in a community setting. Long ago when VR was fresh and the original Rift was the latest and greatest; I never imagined how useful VR would be, many people just saw it as a gimmick but now it's clearly more than just entertainment.
I know American Sign Language since I went to a special education school, however when I learned to talk with speech therapy and got into mainstream school where everyone talks all the time and no sign language, the only ones I see signs everyday are my interpreters but it's not the same with friends (my friends are either far away or went to college in a different state), I see my friends on social media but it's all text based/pictures. I did try signing in ASL in VRChat but I'm still adjusting with my Quest 2. Trying to sign while relying on buttons and sensors is going to take me a while, lol. I love to talk so yeah, haha. I know English, Spanish and ASL.
Body language and touch are the most powerful forms of communication imo. You can say alot more then most people trying to speak with words can if you're skilled at it. Imo, it's an art form. ^^
@@iiReTr0Z I never said it was easy. gestures are a small portion of it btw. that's not communicating with body language. your touch, your stance, your subtle movements, all speak volumes, and convey intent.
@@NixyVR i was responding to the part where you said its a powerful form of communication. i don't think thats true, because trying to explain the simplest things using your body is hard. although if you can do it then hats off to you because thats really something amazing.
very interesting video. when i first heared of mutes i was thinking about playing vrchat because of severe social anxiety. didnt go outside or speak with someone for around 10 years. and vrchat seems to help a lot of people. i also didnt know that you have to get diagnosed with mutism. i thought mutes are either anxious or want to stay gender neutral. so thx again. learned a lot
I love the video! But i was wondering if you are gonna do lolis of vrchat? Id be cool to see, ofc you dont have to though and i dont want it to sound like im rushing you so take your time!
Im glad i found the sign community in VRChat. just another way for you to actually communicate if u cant hear or speak (by choice or not practical). sometimes i rather just sign because with sign language ur body language does play a big part to get ur point across and when ppl sound so "dead" inside this game, it just doesnt make it fun sometimes
I have auditory processing disorder, which in short term means, I don't have the ability to focus on sound, so it makes it very hard to understand people in certain environments. Thou what I found out while trying VR chat is that there is no background sound apart from other people speaking, and that if someone is talking far away from you and a person talking with you, is near you, I noticed the sound reduction is pretty strong which helps a tone, as if this was in real life, I would have to guess some words of what the person is saying to me. This kinda makes me want to get more into VR, as tbh even having gaming friends, it's hard as most of the time, even after heavily tweaking game sound and VC, it's not enough as VC and game sounds can get intense. Thou APD comes as a curse and a blessing, as it gives you highted senses, which helps alot in pvp pve games, I can hear enemy activity miles away but I ain't gonna be able to understand 90% of what your saying, to put it basically 🤣
i used to be a mute because i just hate my own voice. i'd play on desktop and use a text to speech program to speak to people. i've recently come into vr and have been pushing myself to speak more and more but for the most part im still quite silent
Thank you for clearing up what "mute" means in VRChat. I recently started playing and have met a lot of "mute" players. They're all really cool even though im horribe at talking 😅
So.. you made videos about Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.. and you didn't caption your videos? You do realize they could be watching your video. right? and i am one of them. We do not like auto closed captions. Caption your videos if you do care about us.
this is why VRchat can never be replaced its so established its a place of practically no rules but with rules that are unspoken it has communites like the helping hands community its so amazing and funny that theres sign language classes and worlds dedicated to the mutes the reason why Metaverse will fail? it will never be like VRchat it will be too restrictive and no creativity.
One of my most recent friends, but has quickly became a great almost best friend was a mute. Mute players are some of my favorite players in VRC. I love learning how to communicate with them and a bit of the mystery they carry with them.
I'm not mute in IRL but in games, I like to be mute at times. this video really gives an understanding of people who wish not to talk. I meet a lot like this! sometimes it's best to take their time to warm up or to learn another way to communicate!
It's really heart warming to see how vr brings so many people together. I've only had it for a month or two and it has helped me greatly with my depression and anxiety. Although I will admit sometimes it adds stress. The good outweighs the bad tho.
Good video, but it's a shame that it only scratches the surface. It would be difficult, given the subject matter being people who don't speak, but I'd love to see some interviews with mutes, and hear about experiences that mute players have had
Now that is nice video. Have not seen this video earlier, and i am creator of Sign&Fun. I helped deaf community since 2019 and my world was popular in old times. We have still to work at videos, and many videos need updated too because sign language is living language, changes over time. Stay mute has many reasons. Part is also due your voice and background, so you don't want others hear who you are. Can exposes your identity a bit by guessing gender and age, and accent will tell where you might come from. Social anxiety is another point, VRChat is good to learn to speak with others as therapy. And still we have some big streamers on Twitch which are still mute. So yeah it's possible. But as mute in VRChat, that is kinda hard to go around. Sign language is good solution because it's faster than TTS or keyboard / pencils. If you wish don't speak, go learn sign language! Respecting to have some look at deaf community and my world. My world is updated often and in future i want redesign world again to make it more comfy place.
Hello, I'm Deaf, and I like that video. Also I can help you to learn and practice ASL. The video is awesome. Also you're welcome to join in bob64's world anytime you can if you'd like. Stay awesome gamer!
Checked mute streamer on twitch and I had negative thoughts about it at start but then I thought about maybe they deaf or mute irl. But at least for now that kinda content isn't for me.
@ the 1:00 mark, little disrespectful my dude. Can’t count the amount of times i’ve heard “Naruto signs” or “gang signs”. But hey, still super cool to see our (helping hands) community represented and brought to the public again. Thanks for that

Tried joining the HH discord, and as soon as I was asked by the bot to put a short introduction my social anxiety got the better of me and I left Was in the server a total of 3 minutes before I got scared and left
I've discovered I'm a selective mute in VRChat despite being fairly competent at conversations irl. Sometimes I feel like talking if I'm feeling a little confident, but a lot of the time I feel more secure just observing others and communicating with pencils in worlds that have them. I only recently discovered the chatbox tool. I've only been on for about 2 days though. I hope to gain more confidence (and friends) as time goes on :)
I have selective mutism!! I'm working hard to try and become more comfortable with speaking in public spaces, and vr is really helping me with this. :>
sometimes i feel like if i talk, i'm masking, and i am more myself muted. it was so validating being welcomed and embraced by the mute community as easily as it was. i'm just comfier muted, and like you said, i can do so much more when no one expects me to talk.
I keep myself muted cuz I get almost overwhelmed when there's a lot of ppl around, I started playing vrchat to help fix that tho, like I'm the same way irl and I thought vrchat is the best way for me to improve my social skills while still being save enough to just leave whenever
Hey twice I know this is off topic. But remember the avatar you were wearing in your FBT video? I’ve been wondering where to get that avatar. Sorry if this bothers you!
I am also a mute in vr chat coz most are americans must think I got a wierd asian accent 😅. idk . english is my 2nd language so. I prefer not to speak specially my avatar is a schoolgirl 😅. it will also remove the illusion 😂
im deaf and would one day like to join vrchat and make friends but waiting til I have a system that can run vrchat, it's so difficult for me to make friends for some reason.
I am a half mute so I do use my mic sometimes, mainly I only talk to friends and um well it’s sometimes difficult to answer questions without my voice. If your full mute I feel your pain it’s almost impossible to get people to understand you. Have a nice day.
I never understood why people were mute by choice in vrchat. Yeah if you have bad social skills its hard talking to people but the point of vrchat is to socialize with others, not only that but its not like your going up to someone in real life and they can actually see and hear you. Theres a mute button for a reason and theres an unmute button for a reason. Either way i still respect my friends who are mute
i have social anxiety like rlly bad if people look at me i generally want to just a. run away or b. cry but for some odd reason im ok chatting to people when i stream and shit its just really weird
I'm a mute for a variety of reasons first one I never was a fan a phone calls so that translates to vr, second I work nights and had to move back in w family I don't like people overhearing me or my conversations especially with out context, third social anxiety translated to vr aswell lol idk how to start a convo anymore
I'm pretty new to VRChat - but Mutes are some of the coolest I've bumped into. They aren't acting like jackasses trying to make instant shock-style impressions. They are just genuinely interacting... we could all learn from that.
i used to speak back when i was on desktop but have since become a selective mute and only speak around certain friends, why? idk lmao, i just prefer not to
i love the idea of bringing sign to vrchat to help those who dont talk, or those who are totally mute so much but just remember outside of learning through vrchat though if you do have an interest in learning any form of sign language to learn from someone who is deaf and not hearing
