The "Death" of Feminism - Why The Movement Is In Crisis

Is feminism going out of fashion? This crisis in the feminism movement couldn’t really come at a worse time for American women. There’s the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, how the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately put women out of work, problems like workplace sexual harassment and unequal pay that aren’t going away and may be getting worse, and a Me-Too backlash in full swing that’s unleashed a torrent of shocking misogyny. So how did we get here, when a mere six years ago Me Too’s cultural moment seemed to promise a new era? And is it possible to channel all these setbacks to reignite our passion for women’s rights with a more meaningful feminist framework for our times?

If you ever think of a fight for basic human rights as a trend - you need to rethink at your whole value system. If you equate feminism with what you see in Hollywood, then you need to pick up a book and actual see what the movement is. Because it is not fun, it is not marketable, it is not cool - it is a fight for rights that every human should have. As soon as you think feminism is something you can put away lie last years knee high boots, that’s when you will start losing your rights. Nothing is certain for women - in a blink do any eye everything you hold normal and right could disappear. Roe vs wade was the opening move not the end game.

I believed Me Too was or something even earlier than that. I saw it as the catalyst that woke everyone up. The Take did a video on the Handmaids Tale. It was interesting considering how many people did not put two and two together. As soon as episode 1 came on, my mom and I were deeply scared this was going to happen in real life. As soon as women have power and sexual freedom, people have to destroy it. It sucks that another woman created this society. Yes, humans have the capacity to be cruel including women, but I never understood women hurting other women when they were disrespected too.

THANK YOU for this comment. This is the first thing that came to mind when I read the description box. I’m like “wait a minute. Since when did human rights become a trend in the first place?! 😂” That mentality is the root of the problem among us as women. Not everything is a fashion statement or a trend that you can just throw away when it gets too boring or hard.

If you just stopped looking only in the American point of view and realize that THERE IS AN ENTIRE WORLD OUTSIDE THE USA you would know that in Mexico and in most Latino countries we DO in fact have organized feminist organizations and we are still fighting for our right to abortions and fighting back the killing of women each day. WE ARE!!!!! Thanks to the local feminist movement (la marea verde) and the students with the green handkerchiefs cutting the metro in Chile in 2019 and the protests it unleashed, the whole country kickstarted towards a leftist wave that culminated with the president chosen this year -- the first leftist president since 1973, where Allende was killed by a US backed coup. There's still work to do (the old dictator's constitution is still in place) but it's steady, slow work. Argentina got abortion approved in 2020 -- we've had gender identity laws and equal marriage since 2010. Mexico is still battling against the goverment for the recognition and prevention of femicides -- that affect disproportionately poor and indigenous women. Latin America is STILL fighting, we HAVE been fighting for years and years! Just because the West decided feminism was a product to be sold, something to be shown on TV and not execute on the streets doesn't mean the rest of the world works the same. I feel like first world countries -- or at least the middle class, white part of it -- don't have the tradition of social fighting for a cause, struggle the way we have it and therefore feels like it should be a fast, apparent blaze instead of the steady fire and the inch-by-inch activism we're more used to in Latin America and the Global South. Activism is slow work and it's unglamorous and boring -- of course the western media will claim its death when they can't package it to sell.

Thank you for mentioning this. In Mexico we are trying so hard to be heard but also to survive as women because in many cases we aren't safe in the streets and sometimes not even at home. Unfortunately a lot of the US-centric views related to anti-feminism are entering into the Latin American context, especially in through the Mexican border with the US. Most of the time, in LATAM channels and on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook people will be able to find a mix between people who are true feminists who want women to have safe abortion clinics, education for girls in rural communities, etc., people who confuse misandry and feminism, and of course the toxic self-called "feminists" who are into misandry and are TERFs. I wish there was a way for people in my country to understand that feminism is one thing and misandry/TERFs are another completely different topic. I've had to become low key feminist at this point because of all that I wrote above. I do my best to help women and trans-women but sometimes it can feel a bit lonely.

It's really not complicated, it's all about being able to choose what you want, without others forcing you to change that choice or to forbid you from doing that choice or shaming you because of that choice. I'd always say, just leave us alone. Let us choose for ourselves, let us be ourselves. There is backlash against the performative feminism and rightfully so. Making someone's brand about just being a woman is stupid. Elisabeth Warren attacked Bernie Sanders and called him sexist for telling her that it might be harder for a woman to be elected as president. For instance the last Star Wars movies were just a disaster and Disney explained the backlash as a sexist outrage against the Rey character. fewer women being hired was NOT a result of the movement, it was the CHOSEN response by those clinging to power. we're never going to get anywhere if we blame those standing up to power for power's response that could/should easily be read as an admission of guilt. businesses CHOSE not to hire more women instead of making working places safe for everyone. businesses CHOSE to continue working with powerful perpetrators and blacklist those who came forward. businesses and politicians CHOOSE not to enact policies around healthcare, parental leave, time off, income inequality, etc. just like harassment, these are all more examples of those with power exerting that power over those of us with less power. it's weird that we hold all feminism responsible for how it's been co-opted/coopted and the responses of those clinging to power. (co-optation is the process of basically rebranding a radical movement/subversive work so that it's no longer a threat to the status quo.) let's stop calling it "mainstream feminism", maybe let's give it a more accurate name "capitalist co-opted feminism". also, instead of perpetuating these kinds of narratives, use your platform to help educate people to see this process and how powerful people distract and shift blame to hold on to power? this kind of co-optation will continue to happen until we reject it. let's question who benefits from certain narratives and not be so quick to turn on people who should/could be allies. "In the arena, remember who the real enemy is."--Haymitch, Catching Fire (ironically, all the hunger games movie adaptations and the 3rd book are also examples of co-optation)

I truly believe that free quality early childcare will do the most in helping some of the most underprivileged and abused women in our country. Women can get discriminated against when going to find work if she is wearing a ring because the workplace knows that they will likely have to give her paid maternity leave. But also, idk if we are looking at the possibility of pregnancy correctly. I think it is pretty backwards to believe that pregnancy, something that men cannot do, will always remain a hindrance for us to succeed. That seems to me like we are still promoting a patriarchal society since we all have to be more like men to succeed. We should make it so that natural female experiences, like pregnancy, are not discriminated against but rather, accommodated.

Where it gets ridiculous is when some women think feminism is being superior to men instead of equal to them. I feel this attitude is what made us fight in the first place, men thinking they are superior to us. Men and women can be feminists when they believe they are equal to each other and are proud of each other’s being said. That being said, both genders should be independent and self-sufficient especially in an age where it is scary to date. We need to rely on ourselves in case there won’t be a partner to help us. But it is ok if you have a partner. It is ok to be a stay at home parent. It is ok to both have jobs and financially support the family. But life happens and we need to take care of ourselves before we take care of others.

I'm a feminist and I'm against equality. If we were "equal" to men we'd be responsible for just as many SAs, murders, and violent crimes as men. We would be starting just as many wars and running just as many corporations that work off of slave labour. I want to see what a world that's run by women would look like, because I can say it'd probably look a hell of a lot different than the current world that's catered to men.

I was a feminist until a certain point, and I just wanna say the reasons, when I was 7 years old I was emotionally abused by my female math teacher, and when I was 15 my dad lost his job because he was falsely accused of hitting a woman with an iron object, now that I'm 20 till this day I'm asking to myself, is this what modern feminism want, not letting toxic women accountable and innocent men in jail, how comes a movement made in the 1700s becoming like this, a group full of angry misandrist that do nothing but harm other women and men, I'm heavily dissapointed how a movement with good intentions It became something who is being more and more toxic as the years go by in the USA.

You can throw all those silly dictionary definitions and gender studies recitals of "we only want equality" you want towards us normal people, but we know what we witness first hand from the cult of feminism. While feminists such as yourself preach equality in theory, it is not what you practice in reality. It is all smoke and mirrors designed to benefit solely women while vilifying men in the process. The spokeswomen and faces of feminism spew male-hate on a regular basis....and with no true rights left to fight for in the Western world, feminists have taken it upon themselves to CREATE their oppression - all anti-male. Emphasis on the word "create". Let's see - there's mansplaining, manspreading, manterrupting, the male gaze, toxic masculinity, the universally mocked and debunked gender pay gap, the patriarchy, femicide, rape culture, the inane "believe all women", the patriarchy, the sudden scourge of cat-calling, all anti-male. Hell, the latest book being promoted by a feminist is entitled "I Hate Men"....um, we men ain't feeling the "we only want equality" love here. Are we not to believe what we see and read with our eyes and hear with our ears from the leaders of your cult and keep referring back to those silly gender studies composed dictionary definitions of feminism? You see, the problem is not with us everyday normal Average Joes and Janes, but rather with the likes of you "true" feminists, who refuse (fear?) to silence these "fake" feminists, as you term them. Is that too much to ask? They hate men under the guise of equality. Just that. Man hate for all men. Eighty percent of women, that's women, mind you, not men, refuse to identify as a feminist today. Young women in particular. Women are abandoning your cult in droves....has there been a sudden barrage of women seeking inequality? Of course not, you silly goose, you. Rather, women, akin to men, know feminism's true purpose - and, newsflash, it ain't equality. **Equality is not possible without you. If you believe in equality, please come forward, and support everyone, regardless of their gender, which is not what feminism does.** What feminists need to do is look in the mirror and ask "What are we doing wrong to garner such a horrid image today with the general populace?" (in other words, the other 98 percent of the population.) Obviously, if you read the endless barrage of negative comments in this comment section, you reciting from your gender studies textbook that feminism is all puppy dogs, rainbows and kittens and only wants equality is not working. Rather, you feminists should go up to the chalkboard, erase all those inane dictionary definitions, commands to "educate ourselves" and start anew. Otherwise, feminism has a mere 10 years remaining of any stability in its current form.

Society cannot be changed without changing institutions and the economic relations that drive and steer those institutions. That has to be done with economic means by the people who produce the wealth (the working class). That woman’s march had a lot of celebrities and wealthy women, but feminism is a working class movement. Women were always a huge, integral part of political movements, even when only the men were acknowledged, and as a result women’s issue and perspective gained representation directly and indirectly.

I think it was Laurel Thatcher Ulrich. However it originally wasn’t about being loud and protesting but about how the quiet woman of history are often forgotten and under-appreciated. We so often have glorify people like Marilyn Monroe but forget about the single mother who managed to feed her kids in a world against her. It’s a bit like how traditional woman’s work (cooking, caring) is over looked despite society needing it to function. Which I think makes ironic that the woman who said it is so often forgotten. However while the “fight the power” interpretation was not the original meaning I think it has value and things in culture shift. In short I think the quote is relevant just not in the way you intended but we need both loud and quiet women to be appreciated. Which at least in part ties into intersectional feminism because different women struggle with different things and traditional woman’s work should be appreciated not invisible.

I think people are just too obsessed with the term itself. Who cares if you call it feminism or call yourself a feminist. Just as the video says, terms and slogans go in and out of fashion; it's the actions that matter. Call yourself whatever you want, but do your research, and show up to the damn ballot box and demand the changes we're all shouting for.
@pxndx7516
@pxndx7516 Год назад
Show up to the damn ballot box? Lol and when has that done anything to help? Did going to the ballot box help Roe vs Wade in the US? Your perspective is extremely westernized, liberal and american. Feminism is direct and active in south Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East, and women here aren't afraid to call ourselves feminists or call our movement feminism, in any of its branches (radical feminism, Marxist feminism, liberal feminism, indigenous/decolonial feminism, afrofeminism). It's not a monopoly of ideology, it has variety. Latin American feminism lost its faith in electoral system a long time ago. We don't wait patiently until we can vote so we can have change. We protest, we do direct action, we go up to our government offices directly and demand it. Legal ab0rtion, for example, only existed in Mexico City 10 years ago--- in the last 4-5 years, 10 more states have legalized it. No voting. Only taking to the streets.

I think one thing that's overlooked is that American 3rd-wave feminism is being treated as a zero-sum game between men vs. women. Back in the early 20th century, the push was to give women equal rights to men (e.g. voting), which resonated with a lot of people. However, today if you bring up certain issues that men face (e.g. loneliness and suicide), many feminists would either dismiss the statistics or even be "happy" that men are finally suffering like they are. This doesn't exactly ingratiate men to become allies, and people get sick of hearing about what has essentially become an "oppression olympics". It's for this reason that recent polls have shown that younger men don't consider themselves "feminists" at a rate even higher than older men (even though you would assume it SHOULD be the opposite).

Quick question about the points made at the end of the video there. On one hand there was a section there which speaks about embracing the various intersections which advocates for women of various races and backgrounds voicing their own needs and struggles. It implies there can't be a universal feminist principle to collate these specific needs under one umbrella, since it risks diluting these varied perspectives into a homogeneous viewpoint which serves no one. However, the very next section spoke about crossing political lines and uniting under a collective banner in order to create a sort of blueprint for the Feminist movement. I'm a little confused since the first point in making feminism more accessible seems to suggest a sort of division of labour if you will, with groups of women who share intersectionalities representing their own specific struggles and requirements (which makes sense - whether we agree such an approach would work or not there is still a logical consistency to it). The following example of women crossing political lines however was posited to prove that such a system could work, but this example is not a direct comparison at all and only undermines the first position regarding intersectionality from where I'm standing. If anyone has the answer to this or can explain this position I would be so grateful! Thanks to all in advance who take the time to read and share their perspectives, I appreciate you!

If you want to know why feminism regularly crumbles and re-brands, it is that its primary focus (even in this video) is on the injustices women face, while often assuming men therefore do not have injustices worth addressing as well. Feminism implies equality for both sexes but assumes that if there is inequality in one, it must take from the other - when often times its capitalism itself, and not a particular gender, that is perpetuating that lack. The rich thrive as girlbosses pit us against each other when we could work together towards actual feminism instead of one that is quickly co-opted. Show compassion if you want compassion - even a cup of compassion given a good mans way will get you a bucket from them if that's what you need.

The women that claim to be equality rights fighting feminists are contradicting themselves by saying they fight for the rights for women to be equal to men and yet they continue to blame the so called "male dominated society" for suppressing and oppressing the rights of women. Accuses the male dominated society of the continuous sex crimes against women while they generalize all men by stating that all men are capable of sexually violating women putting both good men and the scumbags in the same category to make a baseless argument. Then on top of all that, they have the nerve to say that women are victims of the pay wage gap saying that in the United States of America, women are paid less than what men make. And yet in the United States, there are women who have succeeded themselves in male dominated, high executive positions. Feminist women think that men indulge in women being in the "second in line" positions. Meaning that to them men want women to follow what the man says and does. Now you know that's an utter bullshit analogy. They think we men just want women to be housewives, subordinates, and submissive that we men don't want to fancy in seeing women make as much or more money than men. That's absolutely false. The only type of men that don't want women to work and be a wage earner like the man are men that dedicate themselves in feeding their misogynist ego that "the man's home is his castle". These feminist women in my opinion live in ancient times because they think in the 21st Century, we men have the 1950s/1960s mentality of keeping women below us men. Many of us men aren't perfect human beings, but we don't seek to control women in any way. Now if women want to crusade such misogynist behavior from men, they should target the men that see women as less than human beings and believe women are inferior to men. I don't think women are inferior human beings because I feel like it's not my courtesy call to assume such misogynist ideologies about women. And second, if women were to make more money than me, I wouldn't give a shit. Hell, it'd benefit me greatly if women made more money than I do. Why should I stop and prevent women from making that bread?

Simply put: Feminism is originally (and officially) a movement of both men and women who fight for equal rights. Feminism has been distorted, but it is important to remember and honor the real purpose of the movement, and separate it from hembrism (women superiority; masculine exclusion)
@maylabrown4584

It was ever about equal rights, it was about women wanting more rights than men, which is why they have been coddled and treated better than men for the few past decades.
@infjelphabasupporter8416
@infjelphabasupporter8416 Год назад
@@maylabrown4584 That is completely false. As a matter of fact, it was women who during the beginnings of feminism mostly opposed to it. Men wanted to be unburdened from having to provide from the entire family, leave their children, etc., too. Feminism itself is about equality; it was also about accepting more stereotypical femenino traits (such as weakness) in men. That is why, while a few women started the feminist movement, men were initially their greatest supporters, not other women (In Europe, at least). So in a way, one of the purposes of feminism was for men to be able to be more "coddled" as you said.
@maylabrown4584
@maylabrown4584 Год назад
@@infjelphabasupporter8416 It it was about equality from the start then it would have not been called feminism to begin with, it is exclusively for Women not Men. Weaker and/or Smarter Men than most joined their cause for political brownie points and that hasn't changed ever since then at the detriment to the livelihoods of the common man.

FACTS. I hate it when people say "oh feminism isn't what it once was". It is. Feminism itself cannot change and it would be a terrible thing if we forgot what it means and all that it stands for. But people often confound it with hembrism, and call it "modern feminism", which is extremely damaging to feminism. Most people have forgotten what feminism even means, which is crazy considering how essential it is in our society.

I think part of the backslash is just correction of the overcorrection... Does that make sense? The believe all women and all else have merit, I don't deny it. But it festered this "all women are victims, all men are perpetrators" mentality that actively hurts everyone. I just expect a more empathetic world for everyone, many women are starting to catch that they also have biases towards men and that men are also conditioned by patriarchy and are victims as well not the enemy. But is a hard long journey ahead of us.

I live in East Europe and feminism is very much needed here, which is why I identify as a feminist. I've gone through sexual harassment at several corporate jobs, plus came across men who say things like "why do women need to work?". I find it naive to say it's ending-these women who talk against it are spoiled delusional women who often are paid for and protected by men. I would encourage them to try living in a part of the world or their own society on their own, without being attached to a guy, and see how easy it is. The true measure of respect women get in society is how men treat them when they are on their own, trying to make their way through life, not when they're known by their husbands, boyfriends or daddies. Truth is that a non-feminist world is non-sustainable. If women don't end the old ways, nature will.

I've been vocal as I can be on the roe v wade issue, and trying to put things back. But aside from posting on social media and going to marches, none of the groups advertising online are really letting people know what else they can or should do to fight for reproductive rights. Where is the central organization to fight this legally? In the courts? Where are the channels to help voters for our cause without access to voting? Where is the public stand to help women who need access to abortion out of state where bans were put into place? Where are the legal funds to help women in peril?

Maybe it's because we had no say when they got rid of it , our rights were bought and everyone was lied to , how many laws were just put in without anyone's say , you vote for this law the caveat is this comes with it but were not gonna talk about it. Just before roe their was heavy regulations on abortion clinics , pregnancy was still criminalized in a event of a miscarriage, trigger laws on the books , and the lie that was use for the 1st set of abortion laws to shame woman to have babies .. I noticed a growing no. Of article of how millennials are selfish for having to few children and had the suspicion that they were slower chipping away at it . Oh its just after 15 weeks- it's just the woman who do drugs , it just going to the state to we can take this to the federal level and I think birth control , gay and interracial marriages should also be left up to the states .. and voting Democrat won't help your not gay your just Trans so let's transition you to the right sex , Trans woman have more of a voice and are being doted over then the actual woman they are assaulting and raping in woman's prisons , bathroom and locker rooms , dismantling female sports and taking away Scholar ships .. young girls are transitioning because they are not the stereotype .. they both are after the same thing , they want to make woman inferior to men and refer them as a breeder of some kind ..

I think a part of the problem is that the movement has had too many bad faith actors and virtually no women publicly calling them out. This movement can't survive women making false rape or abuse allegations; or when they said that they wanted to date more emotionally available men only to then ignore them or worse and continue dating the same abusive "bad boys" that they've been complaining about. I forget which actress filed the lawsuit years ago for literally $1 to make a point about the issue behind it rather than monetary compensation but now that's a thing of the past to the degree that now any woman can and probably would sue any man for any reason real or imagined and she will demand everything from him in court (his money, home, kids, car, possessions, etc.) and more often than not the court will give it to her no matter what the evidence says. It's shit like this that's killing the movement.

And I 100000% agree that accusations should be taken seriously because to lie about it is particularly egregious and heinous and I can’t imagine anyone doing that but for the life of me I have not found someone with a good response to my worry and concern. It’s always ‘only 2% are false’, like…that’s still 2% many (granted I also question whether this is a question for feminism alone to address or we as society)

I was supportive of the movement for a long time, but stopped when the movement became unwilling to acknowledge men's issues. I was abused as a teen. As a consequence, having no one to go to, nowhere to shelter, I dropped out of school, and spent years struggling. By the time I got my life together, I was past 26. That may not seem important to most, but the moment that drove me, of all things ,to attempt suicide was learning I had passed the age I could register for selective service. Not only was I unable to go to college without paying for it in cash, at out of state rates, I was barred from government work, and threatened with a huge fine for failing to register. The first time I heard about it was applying for school. I am a survivor, and made it through alot. But I will not support a movement that boycott men's abuse centers, that's unwilling to acknowledge that women can perpetrate abuse. That gatekeeps help by telling us we should go through them before we get help. I am not a predator, yet all men are continually treated like we are. There no me too for us.

Let me say this if any woman is using the Amber Heard trial as a reasoning and basis for why women are afraid to come out about being abused or any type of harassment or violence or sexual violence done to them.
