Elden Ring draws heavily from the imagery of the Bible and Christian tradition. Several key themes and events provide the inspiration for Elden Ring's lore. These secrets and easter eggs are some of the coolest things I've seen and I had a blast researching these findings. Elden Ring is an action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and made in collaboration with fantasy novelist George R. R. Martin, who provided material for the game's setting.

I couldn't help but notice the strong connection between Shabriri and the demon of blindness from Jewish mythology, with whom shares the same name (I like to learn about this kind of things, I find them super interesting). Also, Shabriri's name in Hebrew translates as "dazzling glare" or "breaker of the eyesight", something that is quite related to the frenzied flame eye thingy stuff.

The Magma Wyrms, are said (in the description of their sword) that when they committed the act of pursuing immortality and becoming dragons, they were punished by be coming Wyrms and being on their belly and dragging them. Just like the snake in Genesis, and i see the pursuit of becoming a dragon as an allegory for the fruit of wisdom.

On a similar note I feel like Miquella has some parallels to Jesus Chist. Both are the child of their world's respective gods, both have a purity to theor nature that enthralls others, both seek to heal to sick, and both welcome the outcasts of society with open arms. He also created the Haligtree, whoch could be considered an equivalent to Christ creating Christianity from Judaism. There's also the element of being sealed away before rebirth. Christ following his execution and Miquella after a great slumber, but Mohg changes this. Mohg and his affinity for Miquella could also be a parallel to the Devil tempting Christ in the desert.

As a Christian, I'm very happy that Fromsoft isn't afraid to insert these ideas into Elden Ring or any other Soulsbourne game. Through the addition of Celtic Mythology, Alchemy and many, many more Religious ideologies, Fromsoft has done a fantastic job in making Elden Ring a game where you will find something your very familiar and comfortable with. I really do not think they are intending this to be Christian representation. Christianity is not one of many random themes in the game. Something that I've noticed in D&D and other types of fantasy games and settings is that, as a Christian, while you'd expect me to be more religious, I am instead immediately distrustful of the in-universe gods. Unless it's literally supposed to be the Christian God, as is the case with Narnia, it's a false god with ulterior motives that can't necessarily be trusted. Both Marika and the Greater Will seem to have their own agendas and don't seem to care so much about their subjects. Marika is framed as a rebellious god, which casts doubt on both her and the Greater Will, and the evident decay of the Two Fingers also calls into question the authority of the Greater Will. But this is a fictional world, and perhaps I'm being unfair to Marika and/or the Greater Will.

- In Marika's bedchamber there are many stones with engravings. Reference to the ten commandments? - Marika is a goddess and queen so it could be a reference to the fact that kings were said to be selected by God (that they had a certain divinity). They were like a representation of god. - The academy of Raya Lucaria is the most cathedral building of the entirely game and they don't have faith in any god. - In Marika's churches there are chalices (like christians) to improve the vials. Keep up the good work!👍

Something I noticed in this game is the way Ranni and her dark moon fit in to the lore and Judeo-Christian beliefs. You mentioned the story of Adam and Eve but the original orthodox version of the tale actually ties in with Ranni. The original story is that god created man and woman at the same time, Adam and a woman named Lilith, after god told Lilith that her role was to be submissive to Adam she refused asking to be equal, and the God cast her from the garden of Eden, then the rest of the story takes place as per usual. In Jewish beliefs she is seen as a demon with the goal of subverting gender roles and liberating women from being subservient to men, and thusly she became seen as a goddess in some Pegan religions as her only crime was asking to be equal, how she ties into Elden ring is that her symbol through history has been the Dark Moon since the moon is seen as a feminine symbol and Lilith was seen as a dark perversion of femininity by those who whished to keep an order where women where lesser and subservient to men. Ranni's moon is the dark moon and similarly she is a child of god and seeks to liberate the world from the influence of god and allow for free will. Edit: I made a few mistakes that I knew were wrong but it was a youtube comment so whatever. Anyways, the use of the word original is incorrect rather the story of Lilith predates the standard Christian creation story. Lilith also shows up rarely in Christian folk lore and is primarily a Jewish, Sumerian and Pegan figure, I sort of lumped Christian in there despite Lilith not having a real place or cannon in Christian Theology. Lilith Does even predate the Judeo creation story as a Sumerian Succubus and was later rolled into the Judeo creation story so that would be the 'origonal' story of Lilith as far as we know with as far back as we can understand but using the word original is a bit decisive and since I don't practice any religion it's a bit naïve of me to say anything it the original.

I’ve touched on this topic in a video a while back, but historically, Lilith is not Biblically cannon. She was inserted into some depictions around 500AD.

@Artymis_Kitty
@Artymis_Kitty 2 года назад
@@Ziostorm Yes, it was incorrect of me to include Christian in Judeo Christian since Lilith is mainly a Jewish figure and also saying it was the original version is wrong, but that it predates new and old testament versions of the creation story is more accurate. The character Lilith originates from Sumerian folk lore where she is just a succubus and her placement in Jewish and sometimes Christian folk lore happens in various ways one of which being the story of creation. As someone who doesn't practice a religion it is tempting to place things under larger categories like Judeo-Christian when in reality Lilith as a figure fall squarely in Jewish and Sumerian religion.
@Artymis_Kitty
@Artymis_Kitty 2 года назад
@@kuppa391 The figure of Lilith predates Christianity and Judaism, being a Sumerian folklore figure first and is predominantly a Jewish and Sumerian figure and since Christianity has it's origin in Judaism I felt it acceptable to say Judeo-Christian but I see how that could be confusing. Also my use of the word original, rather than predating was wrong since even the original version of Lilith as far as we know was as a succubus.

Great video. Love your work. Take a look at a book by James Frazer called The Golden Bough. Published at the end of the nineteenth century, it's central thesis maintains that behind the wide range of European and Near Eastern myths dealing with death and rebirth, among which he counted the biblical narratives, one could discern a proto-myth detailing the ordering of society through a sacred marriage between the land and a king. The land, gendered as female, is seen as eternal. The king, always a male, must be in peak physical condition and when he weakens or ages is killed and replaced. In the introduction, Frazer discusses the lethal combat involved in succession to the title King Of The Wood at the temple of Diana in Nemi. A challenger must present a golden bough to the reigning king to initiate a contest. The residing king, often a runaway slave, spends his time uneasily patrolling the sacred oak grove where the golden mistletoe grows. The book had a significant cultural impact in its time, the parallels between its themes and the game are many and no one has really dived into it yet.
@Dan_ModernDayViking
@Dan_ModernDayViking 2 года назад
Just have to say this video is super well done. It's great to see how this game draws from all these themes relating to personal belief in each person that plays it to the extent it does. The way it inspires these thoughts and how we go about examining what we value and believe at our deepest levels. Though I'm agnostic in my own beliefs, I've found a lot of things to connect with personally with this game that relates to these themes of assessing what we believe. The quote from Gideon about how a tarnished could never become the Elden Lord puzzled me for some time before realizing it may mean absolving the tarnished of that which caused them to be tarnished to begin with. To regain their grace like a metal regains its luster. The other image I got from this theme is in the tales of King Arthur with the image of the sword in the stone and what that idea could mean to this story. Is the Elden Lord title meant to be a chosen birth right thing or is it meant as a symbol that beckons the player to try to learn from all the ways the other characters don't succeed in order to become worthy to be the true successor? The image itself like the guidance of grace and the round table drawing from these tales. Lots to think about here.

One thing I found when looking into Radagon, is the name appears that it could be a combination of the Hebrew words Radah and Gan. Radah meaning (to rule, have dominion, dominate, tread down) and Gan pronounced gon, meaning (1. garden, enclosure, 2. fig of bride, 3 Garden of Eden). If it is the case that Radagon is some combination of the two, it kind of implies that the greater will created him to have dominion of marika, the enclosure of the elden ring.

As someone quite a bit into Gnosticism among other stuff, i would say that the main theme is more akin to it. In short, in Gnosticism the revalation is that the christian god is basically an intruder and a lying malignant presence on Earth that wants to subjugate living souls on it exactly like the golden order is in Elden Ring and the real God is Sophia, the Earth itself what would akin to crucible and all forces before the arrival of the erdtree in Elden Ring. And with all golden order derived having strong christian imagery for me the parallels were unmached. Even Ranni's ending has strong Luciferian themes, which is not Gnosticism per se but has a lot of things derived from it...

Considering the christian undertone and iconographic reference were brought up, it would be interesting to see a future video exposing the parallels between Elden Ring's lore and characters and Kabbalah (be it hermetic or rabinic). Doing so would basically conflate the Christian and Alchemical themes all in one cohesive line: The Shattering of the Elden Ring and the genesis of Lurianic Kabbalah, The Tree of Life (both as the literal Erdtree and the Elden Ring itself as a sigil form of it), the duality of Marika/Radagon as the pillars of Boaz e Jachim, the parallels between distinct runebearers and the ten sephirots of the Tree of Life, the progress of the main character as a mystic in his way to ascention by collecting the inprint of each runebearer/sephirot. it would be nice to see someone exposing these possible parallels between Elden Ring and the teurgic practice of Kabbalah

Great video! I would however disagree with the Solomon/Gideon comparison, as Solomon was chosen to build the temple of God because he had no blood on his hands, as opposed to Gideon, who has a lot from the albinaurics. Also, the reason Solomon worshipped other gods was because he had hundreds of wives who convinced him to do so, but Gideon only loved one person, and she was taken from him be Selivus. I would also add my own personal theory that each shardbearer demigod boss represents one of the seven deadly sins, as such Godrick is envy, as he is weak and wants what others have, specifically their limbs. Rennala is sloth, as she just sits and cradles her egg and rebirth people. Radahn is gluttony, as he does nothing but wander, gorging on the corpses of friends and foes alike. Rykard is greed, as the only thing he seeks is more power, and several depictions of him describe him as the “taker.” Morgott is pride, as basically everything he says, and especially his tone, points to him feeling like everyone else is an inferior traitor and disgrace, even though he himself is an omen. He says the thrones were stained by his curse, but immediately turns the blame to us, saying our part would not be forgiven. Mohg is wrath, as he is filled with bloodlust and wishes to destroy everything in the way of his dynasty. Malenia is lust, as she is described as a beautiful swordswoman, and taking your life lets her maintain her own with her lifesteal, basically making her a succubus. This is, of course, the demigods in their present state, as Radahn and Rennala were very different in the past
@ashencometmom5291

i'd say that -morgott is wrath because he's furious at his family for doing their own thing, and so furious at the tarnished for assailing a world order that even _he_ knows is failing that he personally goes out to hunt them down despite being the sitting lord of the most important city in the lands between -malenia is pride because she's contemporaneously too proud to let her identity be subsumed by her fate as the goddess of rot and _also_ too proud to ever admit defeat even if it means giving up her principles -mohg is lust because his plan is mostly reliant on having magic blood sex with an extremely unwilling consort until he gets successfully groomed into being a puppet god to represent the mohgwyn dynasty

Great in depth analysis as always Zio. Didn't know you were a Christian yourself. Not my thing but it's cool to learn stuff about people 😊 though I do thoroughly enjoy the mythology, just not on a spiritual or literal level. One minor correction though, Mogh's weapon is a trident, not a bident. A bident has two prongs, a trident has 3 which is what Mogh's is.

Loved your video, bro! I haven't played Elden Ring, yet I'm a fan of Souls-Borne series. I gave my life to Jesus Christ 2 years ago. Before that, I was a Muslim. I heard Elden Ring became the game of the year, and was so intrigued to watch some videos and gameplay about it. However, after seeing the symbol of the game (which, to me, soooo much portraits the mixed symbol of "the Trinity + the Cross") , watching a few bosses and especially watching the final boss fight, I couldn't help asking myself "why on earth has Myazaki put so much Christian symbolism there?!" It was fascinating to me to see symbols of my faith in the genre of game that I fancy the most, although to some high extent I believe it's a twisted and dark representation of these symbols.

I would recommend some research on (Fuxi and Nuwa) who may be the origin of Marika and Radagon ( intertwined Helix symbol). Rather than Western alchemical symbolism. Perhaps a.mix of both traditions inspired them. They were twins/brother-sisters. Supernaturally born together yet apart. Becoming married. This asian/chinese goddess. Is Considered the mother of the earliest emperors and creator of humanity Its said that Nuwa- 女媧 Nǚwā the patron of earth (地皇 Dehuáng), is a goddess attributed for the creation of mankind and mending the order of heaven. When after a war in heaven (whatever might have destroyed Farum Azule / star sent by the Greater will). Repairing the (pillar of earth) aka.Erdtree? With 5 coloured stones. She used the feet of a turtoise (turtle) to mend the pillar. Creating the Shang dynasty of China. She is a very interesting deity to research in relation to Elden Ring.

A little tidbit here, Mohg uses a trident, in Greek tradition that’s the weapons of Poseidon (God of seas). Hades (God of the Dead) uses the Bident and wasn’t viewed as an evil. I think Mohg, his sanguine nobles and bloody fingers take most of their cues, colors and themes from Dracula, Vampires and Incubus. I love how this game pulls from so many different religions, cultures and beliefs. It’s truly the greatest game in the past few years.

I have a theory that the Demi gods are trying to ascend to the same godhood as their parents through different kinds of merging. I noticed many of the demigods followed a trend of not being ‘only themselves’ so to speak. Goderick was grafting people to increase his might (he obviously didn’t understand the concept, or perhaps didn’t want to share his body with another will). Rykard fed himself to the serpent and became one with it. Ranni obviously takes us to be her own Radagon. Mohg is literally trying to force miquela into the fusion. Idk if this has been covered before, but this is the only place I can think of for feedback

I always belived that Marika and Radagon are like Adam and Eve. The Greater Will created Radagon from Marika to have someone whom would never disobey them, that's also why Radagon is the one that tried to restore the Elden Ring when Marika destroy it. Of course, in here the Greater Will would have them reunited again.

As a Christian myself, I think the most compelling (and distressing thing, though I will expand upon that later) thing that I noticed was the parallels to everlasting life and death defeated by Jesus. He came into the world to save us from our sins and atone for our transgressions, thereby defeating death and granting us eternal life if only we believe in Him and have faith. They very clearly took inspiration from that. Marika came to the Lands Between and enforced her rule of being upon them, banishing Destined Death, along with other things she deemed heretical, such as the omen (akin to the devil or demons, with goat motif and horns alike) and serpents and things we would typically associate with Satan. With the everlasting life, those under its dominion never die as is stated. Yet, as much as I love these games with a fiery passion, I feel that, like with Dark Souls, the main themes go against the Christian teachings. The ways in which the Dark ending is the true and "good" ending (if there even can be one in a soulslike hahaha!) is in fact taking the world back for humanity and our sinful design "...wrest the flame from its mantle. So that we Hollows, in most honest shape of man, may have it for our own.". The Dark is portrayed as the "natural" and "honest". The locust preacher, too, states, "Where fire resideth, shadows twist and shrivel, but in the Abyss, there are shadows none. Fear not the dark, my friend, and let the feast begin." meaning that only when fire, or *order from the gods*, is introduced, does humanity show itself to be evil. The Abyss, as it states, is not something inherently bad. This aligns with a common trend in soulslikes to depict the Dark as misunderstood or even wrongfully accused, for those that delve deeper into the lore beyond face value. Such is also the way of Elden Ring. Though I would hesitate to decide which ending is the "good" ending, I don't think it is the one that maintains the status quo, which would be maintaining the Golden Order (in the Age of Fracture). The Golden Order, if put under scrutiny, is actually portrayed as the bad thing here; not the ways before of death. It is seen as "unnatural" and almost "unethical", not letting those who wish to die rest in peace, and having it be something that divides and distinguishes. We also see Marika portrayed as someone who enslaved for her own gain rather than a benevolent ruler, especially with the upcoming DLC and the war on the inhabitants before her rule, the genocide and massacre of them. With this in mind, I believe that one of the messages is to disparage that of Christianity and just organized religion as a whole, seeing it as something flawed and inherently insidious (I don't know much about Bloodborne but I know that the Healing Church and the story of Alfred is one that does not paint a pretty picture on this topic, him being a murderous hunter who enjoys the act of killing but doing so for the Church's cause). It can be shown through the way that many of the characters speak about its twisted nature, and D's story as well, one of tragic disillusionment. Again, I love the games and the lore and gameplay and their fun, but the message of these games has always stood out to me as something which I greatly disagree with. Either way, great video man!! Always cool to see others of the faith enjoying these awesome works of fiction!! :D Cheers P.S. I saw your comment on Eredin's video, and I wholeheartedly support you on it!!! I feel that we should be able to enjoy these things as long as we are trusting in Christ and have discernment.

6:10 - The Holiday Passover: A celebration based on events only documented in religious texts. Egyptians themselves and independent researchers came to the conclusion that the Jewish people were never slaves and it was the Egyptians that built the pyramid. This mirrors the theme of how the golden order has contrived fake history about itself and its lineage with the overall theme being us untarnished freeing the lands between from the greater will. However what we aren’t told is that everything we do is apart of the greater wills plan regardless for the greater will is marika, the dragons created the elden rings and through cycles of life, death, and rebirth they keep eternal. Marika The Eternal DRAGON Queen Radagon is an anagram for Dragon(s) Meaning he has two names, Radagon and Drake (another name for dragon) The Elden Ring design is based off the Loomis Method which is a way to draw the human head from any angle. You can see the guidelines from multiple angles in the design of the Elden Ring.

The Promised Land = The Lands Between Which is also a Prison of Time, hence the relevance of the game telling us the the first elden lord sat at the CENTER of a storm (like center of the galaxy) in a SPACE beyond TIME with the ability to ALTER time. The dragons WERE the first ‘Outer Gods’ which would instead have been the OLDER Gods. Before the new ones were discovered or possibly also created by the dragons.
@dragonjo
@dragonjo 2 года назад
The game is less about interpretation and more about how well we can pay attention and read in between the lines. The Dragons existed in a space devoid of time with the ability to alter time and this was before Elden Rings and The Golden Order were a thing. They are the ‘Older Gods’ Marika is apart of a race with little information and there are no other races that mimic that of human in Elden Ring. Numen is kinda like Human. The Numen are the NEW form of human dragon hybrids, thus also gods. The lies and stories told can be seen through once you realize the greater will, the elden beast, godfrey and rennala were all in tune with one plan, which is rebirth through life and destruction(death). The Erd Tree, Elden Beast, and Greater Will (who we think we never see but we do, its Marika) are all illusions to give us as players someone to hunt and someone to liberate (Marika crucifix symbolism) The statue of radagon, and rennalas Illusion amongst others are supposed to be a clue that we should question what we think we see and also what we think we know. Why would Marika remove death and steal it back? Because its a narrative. Godwyn was ritualistically killed to turn him into a God Of Rot. Stealing back grace and life that ultimately returns to the Erd Tree which is a dragon nest.

What an awesome video! I love the Lord, and this game made me uncomfortable at times with its Christian imagery. It felt like an appropriation of symbolism without an understanding of what those symbols actually mean. So, for me, it ended up feeling more surface level than the other souls games. I think the forces at play have ambiguous ambitions, and this ambiguity ends up feeling like a cover-up for the lack of substance in who they are as characters. But anyway... it's cool to see a video explaining the ways that Elden Ring has taken inspiration from our beliefs to build this dark-fatanasy world.

The Christian themes in Elden Ring are almost flipped on their heads though. Marika didn’t sacrifice herself for everyone’s sins, she sinned herself and God (the greater Will) punished her for it. So the crucifix’s take on a more pre-Catholic Roman symbolism of warning: “you will be punished.” “Blessed are the Strong” is the Mantra in The lands Between. Everyone seeks strength and you must be strong to become Elden lord. You are rewarded for being stronger. There is hardly ever a moment when being meek gives you dividends. Even in the story. The Symbols of the devil, and of the serpent though depicted as enemies to The Erd Tree, are also morally grey and at times sympathetic. The Erd tree itself is something of a parasite to the great tree-which symbolizes animism and the old pagan ways of nature. If anything this is a negative criticism of Christianity usurping the old pagan cultures. This is also something that Miyazaki constantly criticizes; dominant theocracies like Catholicism or Buddhism taking over and becoming corrupted.

Indeed, at least the Turtle Pope takes the heretical sorceries and fix them by taking out what is heretical just as the Catholic Church did with the culture and philosophy by learning and absorbing what is good and can help to achieve Sainthood and also helping in the discoveries of important formulas and methods for example Jean Buridan, Nicole Oresme, Roger Bacon, there's also Jerome Lejeune from a more modern time. There's also the god-devouring Serpent which we could say that is a evil yet to awake and Pretor Rykard who goes by the way of blasphemy and heresy something bad not only by the Golden Order standarts but also by the nature of the universe and his own followers.
@Real_LiamOBryan
@Real_LiamOBryan Год назад
I do think she sacrificed herself, though. I think she knew that she would be "killed" in consequence of her plan and, so, carried out her plan. I do agree, though, a lot of the Christian themes are either flipped or twisted into something very different.

Personally I think idea of omen is really close to idea of pagan people from catholic tradition,believers of false idols and their descendants,or in other interpretation people that weren't baptized in Christian culture,for example morgott wanted to be accepted by diety of golden order so he protected Erdtree itself even while being shamed and regarded as evil,which references catholic idea of baptism in blood where pagan/non believer can receive heaven/yahwes blessing if they truly desire to die in the name of God. Similiary morgott after his death was accepted by Golden order (shown by golden light and disappearance of horns which are allegory to first sin)

Could these endings signify something to those who control the gears of our actual reality? A tall order, yet I believe gaming is large and more consequential than we can ever begin to understand. One theme which isn’t necessarily directly tied to the teachings of Christianity itself but to the expansion of Christendom through political power (which through the life of Christ there are many examples which indicate Jesus was not on earth to create that). We can see in the gold mask questline that there was a perversion within the golden order which we can see represented by the pose of the T with one arm retracted to the chest
