I was 15 in 1975 and doing nothing with my life now I'm 60 and still doing nothing with my life but. It's a good thing the Dell's done something are we would never. Have hurd they beautiful songs thanks for singing.
SO lucky to have grown up during this time. Remember the slow dances with someone special to this song. We'll never hear this kind of music again. Thanks guys.....you are part of the best times of our lives!!!
I remember just who I was going out with, when this came out. We were at a bar, somewhere. This came on the jukebox. I asked him if he would “stay in my corner, and he laughed. He didn’t, of course, and it was no surprise.
Last night...saw the Dells in a PBS Doo Wop special and enjoy this version of their classic song. Before "Stay..." exploded on mainstream Top 100...first heard it on Philly's #1 R&B station...WDAS and immediatley got the album. Brought back found memories of seeing them llive in a '68 concert. After the concert... at home...my buddies and I would perform (in those days...karaoke without the prompter) "Stay..." and "There Is" as the Dells. Thanks Detroit !!!
I saw them in the Super Lounge of one of the earliest Essence Music Festival concerts and they were still the bomb! God bless them and all of the musical greats for putting out music that we can still enjoy today!
SON-OF-GUN; JUST MADE IT!!! In 1968 "Stay In My Corner" peaked at No. 10 thus just making the Billboard's Top 10 and it spent a total of 13 weeks in the Hot Top 100... The Dells originally recorded this song in 1965; then three years later in 1968 they re-recorded it, This version reached No. 1 on Billboard's R&B chart (for 3 weeks} and also entered the pop charts...
The greatest doo wop/r&b/soul singing group of all-time. Yep. Based on longevity, consistency, quality of recordings, and, never forget, the astounding maintenance of their vocals IN-CONCERT throughout the years. The Mighty, Mighty Dells!!!
Brother what a touching story Im white Irish guy and soul was my escape from the bigots and discrmination catholics got were I grew up in Northern Ireland soul music was and still is my escapism peace brother
Can you just imagine ..somebody had the nerve to tell Marvin Junior don't quit his day job because he couldn't sing. Marvin got the last laugh and went on to become one of the strongest voices in contemporary music. Marvin rest in peace.
This song was realeased in 68, the year I was born. I first heard this when I was in HS and have loved it ever since. I could def. see this being a basement song!
I remember we had the red light on in 1968 D.C. in the basement parties and someone put this song on. 6 damn minutes and we were into that old grind...we lost the creases in our slacks and khaki pants on those nights with the girls in pleated and straight skirts. sweating and grinding. Thanks for the memories Dells and other groups of the day. RIP Marvin Junior. We miss all of you and our youth
On my album, Marvin holds that note for 15.55 seconds. That brother hits that note for 23.45 beautiful seconds in this video. This is a song you can play with your grandparents in the room and watch them light up like a christmas tree because of the beautiful memories rushing through their minds.
@4:07- Marvin holds the note for about 23 seconds. He did it at every live show. The Dells stayed together for 60 years. That's right- they formed in 1952!
Boy you don't say. Alot happened in 1952. Coretta Scott went on a Blind Date with a Young Minister from Atlanta, named Martin Luther King Jr., The Guiding Light Made it's Debut on TV on June 30th (Florence Ballard's Birthday), and the Pre American Bandstand Show called Bob Horn's Bandstand debuted in Philadelphia which was next to Chicago, and New York one of the original Epicenters of Rock & Roll. Patricia Highsmith Wrote The Cult Classic "The Price Of Salt" later becoming a Movie called "Carol".
Simply!!! GREAT!!!!! REAL SOUL MUSIC!!!! Beautiful lyrics..."Honey, I Love you....I need your love to sometimes comfort me....Just a kiss from you...." I LOVE THIS SONG, I LOVE THE MUSIC, I LOVE THE WAY IT'S SUNG!!!!!
THE FRIST TIME I EVER HEARD THIS SONG WAS IN FORT DIX S NEW JERSY IN THE PX ON THE JUKEBOX ,,, I WAS HAVING LUNCH .... WELL I HAD TOO GET UP GO TOO THE JUKEBOX TOO SEE WHO WAS SINGING --WELL WHEN I SAW IT WAS THE DELLS NEW SONG --I FLIPPED OUT --WELL THAT WAS BACK IN 1969 -I WAS IN THE ARMY-----AND I BEEN IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG EVER SINCE
Check out the way Marvin looks at Johnny and smiles at 4:35 after Marvin's incredible 22 second run.... All Johnny can do is smile and shake his head as if to say "DAMN, you're the MAN!"
That was great! I used to love the skit with this song in concert, when Johnny did this high tenor and would take it down to low bass, the rest of the group would say, " I'll be damned if you making two monies" and no matter how many times I'd see the show, it was always like the first time. Too fee videos of them performing.

My heart hurts, I hate to even post R.I.P. Marvin Junior, him and Johnny are gone, feels like old family members has passed on even though I know my legends can't live forever and we all have a date with death,it's shocking to hear nevertheless, may these great singer's souls forever soar, great priceless memories and I was blessed to even witness the Dells live in concert,i wish I could tell them thanks for all the wonderful unforgettable timeless songs and incredible performances
On this day in 1968 {August 10th} the Dells' "Stay In My Corner" reached #1 {for 3 weeks} on Billboard's Hot Black Singles chart... Two months earlier on June 29 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #10 and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... It was originally recorded by the Dells in 1965 for the Vee-Jay label and it reached #23 on the R&B chart... Then in 1968 they re-recorded it for the Cadet Record label, and it was that version that reached #1 on the R&B chart...
Your story is so poignant and compelling. It fills my heart with pathos, nostalgia, and a deep longing and appreciation for black American culture. Yes, our culture and music sustained us through the most cruel and abusive oppression that the world has ever known. I sense great nobility in your experiences, experiences that many of us share and are still enduring. We as a people are incredible survivors and have the monumental capacity to overcome despite the overwhelming odds against us. :-)
I saw them perform this and all their songs and they got a standing ovation. People didn't want to go home. People kept requesting more songs and they kept on singing. Does that happen anymore?
I gotta say....(and I don't mean this to come off patronizing)...African Americans are a special people. I guess maybe it's al they've been through....so much soul and feeling in their music and singing...at least back in the day that is....nowadays not so much so....
