for the record billet labs said they could keep it. but than changed their mind and wanted it back. than after being told they could get it back the changed their mind and wanted money is what i heard although even without the second part the first part makes this a understandable mistake, had the original plan been to send it back instead of keep it it would or never been auctioned. it was a kind of indian giving/ give take back thing but they had mistakeinly auctioned huge stupid mistake but thats what it is it was not malicious intent like many claim at first the prototype was for lunus to keep. that aside i am not on linuses side dude only cares about money and is fake puts no effort in videos its just make as much crap as you can as fast as you can just stick to the formula and use random graphs and post it because we only care about views nothing and no one else

I never had any strong feelings about Linus as a person until a few years ago. I saw a live stream where he and an employee were talking about a graphics card and the employee was really excited about maybe getting to test the hardware and Linus shot him down quite mercilessly, saying that the job would go to someone else and explicitly saying the employee was not competent enough to run a test. The poor guy looked really crestfallen at being called incompetent in front of a live audience. Linus is not a great manager and clearly not a very nice person.

Sometimes it is just about how and when u say things like that, what majes u a great manager. Because if u do it like this, it will cause a bad working climate, what in the end will end in less quality of the workers. Not only will good workers go somewhere else (i mean if i have a choice why sgould i pick someone like that) even the employes that already there will work often signifcantly more inefficient. That's one video I for one can overlook, no where in it because it wasn't a product deep dive, it was litteraly just: is it easy to use, and does it have a market. Other videos, that did do deep dives, is fairgame for Steve Bitterapple to complain about. That is fairgame...at least to apoint. IMO this little more than a school yard squable and my daddy can stomp your groin harder. If want to talk about being professional, and conjenial and bluntly just doing the right thing, that'd have been Steve Burke calling and having a private friend to friend chat. not, you know, taking a dump on that friend, for how they run their business on a public forum. that's not at all cool, or ethical. You call them up and say: not cool to dunk on Hardware on boxed, or me, what the fuck is going on man? you know my channel is better deep dives than yours, so what's up? that's the professional and just done way to do things. ie keep the drama behind closed doors where it belongs.

@@gorkskoal9315 Here's the thing, it's worse than if they fucked up a regular review to me. It's the only glimpse or source of information on a small company most viewers will ever see, especially given how they mishandled the prototype so badly. They have a responsibility to evaluate the product properly, not just to billet labs, but to their viewers, and all the work they've put into building a reputation over the years. They've potentially ruined a small company off a snap judgement and done it while farcially failing at properly testing the item in question. Then to add injury to injury, auctioned off the prototype to buyers they haven't managed to track down and retrieve the prototype from. Then, rather than acknowledge the understandable if unacceptable breach of care that resulted in this, they attempted to shift blame to multiple parties they have injured through their slander and libel. They could have resolved the situation at any point by picking any number of other choices. Like cutting the conclusions when they were in fact informed that a 4090 was not expected to function correctly, and making it an initial hands on video without placing incorrect numbers from an invalid test, retesting it properly, or any number of decisions, including just scrapping the video if it's really not worth spending any more money on it. Steve calling them out publicly is honestly the least they can expect when they also publicly state that their careless testing is better than theirs. The people who made the entire thing public was LMG, not GN. You don't sit back and let a 'friend' try to destroy your life's work, since you have their phone number. No, you stand up for yourself, slap them in the face, and ask them what the actual hell are they thinking, and then give them the reason you suck speech.

I think it's more complicated then that. Despite what your average internet chauvinista thinks. Running a business is actually incredibly difficult. Hiring, pay roll, product development, employee management, ect, ect... So much goes into it that most people who try fail and, many of those that succeed only do so because they figure out a way to "cheat". Basically I am saying you assume greed. @trevorcolt4081
@trevorcolt4081 9 месяцев назад
Fun fact: The reason they didn't use the 3090 for the waterblock video is because THEY LOST IT. Billet Labs sent them a 3090 specifically to test with, it just got thrown on a shelf somewhere and they couldn't find it before shooting the video, so in classic LTT fashion they just said "whatever, who cares" and made the video anyway. A few weeks later Linus finds the 3090 just sitting on a shelf. However, LTT employees are also known for "borrowing" things from the office AKA "Stealing shit off the shelf without telling anybody", so it's possible after the GN video happened an employee quietly left the 3090 back on the shelf
@BeastOrGod

LTT is fine with employees taking products from the shelves tho. It's good environment they work in, they don't maliciously steal company property and 3090 is a 3 year old product! Who knows... Sadly Linus still has a massive cultist following, so it's hard to turn down any chance to let them review your product knowing that they have such massive audience and have always been, for some reason, seen as the way to go for reviews, an "authority" in the tech media.

@@MattscreativeBuuuuut - LTT/LMG even admitted their tech reviews were openly based on incorrect data and with no professional attempt to MAKE them properly correct even when time allowed (watch the apology vid and don't talk to me about subtitles, LTT have admitted these weren't good enough) - so what you're saying is you'd rather be entertained than told the truth? Legitimately interested at this point. I've enjoyed LTT since the start but the bigger he got the more arrogant and disconnected he became; the Billet "review"- from the first scene - was an exercise in arrogance, ignorance, poor management, poor film-making and poor prep. He walked into the studio that day with almost no real prior knowledge of the product, where the team hadn't properly prepped and even admitted they'd done the pre-testing on different equipment than what they gave Linus - and rather than call bullshit on the testing he brushed it off as Billet's problem while also taking, at one point, power tools to the WRONG-SIZED components to make it all fit - that was not journalism, or even a review; that was open egotism and sensationalist broadcasting. A review is where shop-bought components are used to provide real-world data to end consumers, so we know what we can expect when WE buy therm. Also Billet provided the correct GPU along with the cooling block for testing - but the GPU was lost while in LTT possession so they didn't have it available when filming - so LTT decided to test the cooler on the wrong GPU, which Billet are quoted as saying "might work but was untested" (the 4090 has a marked increase in heat output, which LTT didn't acknowledge while also slating the cooler and their poor test results - Billet DO have a cooler designed for the 4090 but this wasn't it) - so the entire exercise was flawed beyond belief. Linus did, at least, note Billet's ingenuity - but this was sent to LTT as a PROTOTYPE - you don't review a prototype, in much the same way as a game in alpha- or beta-testing should not be reviewed in the same manner as the 1.0 release. Billet sent the cooler to LTT looking for constructive feedback; instead their product got bombed - and let's not even talk about the legality of the auction. GN is NOT an entertainment platform - it's a REVIEW AND INFORMATION PLATFORM. And yeah, Steve IS boring - he provides flat, scientific, mathematical research data, as accurately as he can, for those that need it and want it. Occasionally he's borderline autistic in the attention to detail which can be overloading and off-putting for many. If that's not for you or me, then fair play - but at least he's honest, and the graphs are useful. All RU-vidrs who monetise their content have bias - we ALL have bias - but GN at least try to negate that to whatever degree, however successfully. I watch Steve and Hardware Unboxed for information, when I REALLY need to know data - I tend to watch LTT and Jayz2C for the entertainment - but where Jayz2C crosses the border between entertainment and info, Linus has become more and more about the drama and the shock value and to hell with any semblance of realism or reality - all LMG's output is now monetized - they are a MEDIA group now, not just a tech review channel. Just in case you had doubts about Linus' motivations: LTT's much-hyped screwdriver is $70 - did it ever occur to you that you can buy the on eBay for $5 with more attachments but without the logo - or even from your local hardware store? The dude is a shill, and if he can entertain you out of your money then he's won, and that's become the entire point of LMG - it's a media group after all - the tech is now a side-line, even in the name. But hey - a least you're entertained, right? I've just noticed that you also have a RU-vid channel. Congrats on the 20k subs - do you aim to inform, or entertain? It's an important decision. The reason so many people are so angry is that Linus is still portraying himself as a source of information - he doesn't acknowledge that he's become an entertainer instead and is really just going after the money. It's no coincidence that LMG was valued at $100,000,000. And this is why people feel betrayed.

But the channel quickly soured the first time I watched it for a few weeks trying to figure out how to build a budget pc as there's this looming smugness with them, mostly Linus. How he would mock and laugh at "inferior" computer parts constantly. And how he always aggressively has this "Oh this processor or this graphics card is pathetic" vibe to him. Obviously I don't know anything about your situation, or Billet Labs' situation, but why would someone hand off their prototype if they don't have another, or cant afford to replace it? No judgement here, hindsight is 20/20 and all that, and this is coming 100% from an outside perspective. From your comment it sounds like you were having someone make a component, and then it was never delivered and the maker denied responsibility, which is different from how the Billet Labs situation seems, where they just gave LTT the only copy of that cooler in existence, for free, with only a handshake agreement that it would be returned. Not to judge Billet Labs, we obviously don't know everything that happened or was said, but I definitely would not be that trusting with my business as them.

His views and subscriber gains are nearly back to what they were before the drama. In the end for casual peoples who are not tech savvy and want a Mr Beast style video but related to tech, they are just the best

So they said the no one should buy the copper cooler, yet they were auctioning it (a.k.a. putting it up for someone to buy). That's legit scumbaggery right there.
@Eamil
@Eamil 9 месяцев назад
I think it's a little different to auction it off as "memorabilia from a LTT video" (for charity) as opposed to "a part you would want to use in your PC." Of course he shouldn't have been auctioning off the part at all because it was a prototype the company wanted back, but if that hadn't been the case I don't think what you're saying would be an issue.

There's a difference between not recommending a product at retail price ($800) VS actioning it off to the highest bidder. Even trash has a price point where people will buy it. 🤡

Every time a famous person or a company gets blaimed for real provable and obvious reasons, someone appears and starts talking about sexism and sexual abuse with 0 evidence to that. If there is 0 evidence, there is 0 reasons to report on the claims.

Funny thing is that this autoplayed after watching a Techlinked episode. I have watched one other video on another channel on this same topic, so that plays into it. I feel bad for the good people that work there. I haven't trusted them for actual reviews and content in years(or maybe more accurately I just didn't like them for that kind of content?). I do love techlinked though and watch that every time it comes out. Found it funny that GN and HUB were called out in a video, those are two of the most respected and hardest working tech channels around. Haven't like Linus in a long time, he just comes off as someone with a major ego to me and it makes it hard for me to watch him.

LTT isn't even worth the time of day. At this point they're worse than the Verge because at least the Verge recognizes mistakes and attempts to correct them. Remember what GN and even LTT have said "it's not the mistakes it's how you handle them", and Linus has revealed how scummy he is and the trickle down effect of his personality and environment throughout the company.

The fact that major RU-vid channels became companies shows how bad RU-vid got over the years. It used to be a platform for creators and informational videos with poor production values, but still good. Now it's just become a tool for companies to squeeze every penny they can from the consumers with no ethical regards.
