This is the DF83. Big brother (or sister) to the ever-popular quote unquote “niche killer” DF64 line. It’s a grinder that looks identical to the DF64, with some elements of the DF64-P, but scaled up to a bigger size. And right now, it might be my favorite grinder.

Thanks for the quick review Xris. Looking forward to getting mine hopefully by the end of the month. I've been roasting at home so having the ability to single dose and switch beans on the fly is going to be pretty awesome option to have. Ultimately I still want to get the P64, but I've yet to find it in stock, so I figured I'd give the DF83 a shot and see if it will even be necessary. Look forward to hearing about how it compares with new burrs!

Interesting to see how this compares to the Orbit with MP or Cast. I think it is a really good entry point for the size.

One of my favorite shop in my city uses a Mazzer ZM. For clarity and sweetness lover such as myself, it really was one of the best cup I ever had in my city, I'm hearing different things about weather those 83mm from a ZM would fit the df 83.

Thanks for the review, I'm going to be getting one of these and I am always interested in upgrades, so I'll be interested in hearing about different potential burr upgrades and what they offer in terms of flavors. I don't like my espresso drawing out too much fruit or citrus flavors (a little is fine) but I lean more towards the chocolate, nutty, sweet, roasty flavors (I stick with medium and dark roasts), so I've been told getting the Ssp high uniformity burrs wouldn't be best. Wondering what other upgrades might suit my tastes better, I hear the lab sweet burrs will be coming next year but not sure how those would differ from the stock burrs and whether some burrs like that (or others out there) would give me a better result than the stock burrs.

My Df83 doesn't jump, you might just need to clean the feet and your countertop to make sure there's no coffee grounds helping it slip around. Good summary, it is a very well rounded grinder, good balance with the stock burrs with decent body and clarity.

Ordered mine with the SSP HU burrs, I'm really excited to get my hands on it and make some videos! It's a great deal from espresso outlet, 83mm grinder, with SSP burrs installed and aligned for around 1k. The DF64 was great and I can only imagine how fun this will be to make espresso with.

How does the DF83 handle light roast espresso? I know the DF64 with SSP and flat burrs in general are good for that but I like medium roasts and milk drinks equally as much along with filter so I feel like the 83 is the best all around grinder I’d be able to get
@itsxris

milky drinker here! was leaning Niche vs all the other options because I think the body is super important. i love the chocolate/caramel notes with a nice thick body. but i also like a nice little fruitiness on top of it. i have a hand grinder for filter, so thats not a factor here. so strictly milk drinks here, can you elaborate on why you like this more than a niche? workflow is super important to me, so the niche just seemed like a perfect fit for me, a nice easy grinder to use and make amazing lattes in, but im always open to alternatives!
@itsxris

I like for its overall use case - great for milky drinks (like the Niche) but much better on filter compared to the Niche too
@samuelhoong5244
@samuelhoong5244 Год назад
More stronger and distinct flavours from flat burrs than the Niche. You will get higher extractions, punchy tasting notes (even chocolate and caramel) and get a stronger drink in general. The texture that you get out of the Niche is nice in espresso, but the additional thickness and texture is covered by the milk.

I don’t have a 83, but have 2 flats and a niche. Niche def got overhyped, the workflow is fantastic but I feel like it has a pretty one note flavor profile and I feel like no matter what I do I always end up with some astringency lol I like having both flat and conical to choose from tho depending on which coffee I have. I would bet the stock burrs in the 83 would suit your tastes well, plus having a large flat would be a nice addition to your filter game 👍🏽
@Raditram
@Raditram Год назад
Just watched a Varia vs3 review from alternative brewing. It's a conical but spins at super low rpm so it will generate a nice clarity and fruitiness for your filter brew yet it will stil be able to grind for espresso. Cheaper than the Niche. Might wanna check it out.

@@rendez2k Df64 with MP burrs might be even better for brew coffee. Higher clarity less balanced maybe. If not using for espressp Fellows ODE v2 seems like a good cheaper option too.

Would really be nice if you include detail reviews for the grinders. As in percentage of fines, cleaning the burrs and funnel then testing retention, after usage opening the grinder and funnel to inspect, and finally a bottomless Ristretto shot. Bottomless Ristretto shots will show the real consistency of the grind. Trying shots with the bellows and without.
@BensCoffeeRants
@BensCoffeeRants Год назад
Taste is king. And it does taste like it has some fines but I think as burrs get more seasoned on this one it may be improving in flavour clarity. Less fines. Even with the fines it seems to produce really nice smooth coffee.

Did you have a chance to use a df64 with ssp mp’s? Curious how this compares, I find the workflow on the df64 a little suspect even after mods…have been really interested in this grinder, just not sure its enough of an upgrade over the df64 to warrant the expense vs splurging on something high end with rpm control when available
@itsxris
@itsxris Год назад
I think for the price its worth the upgrade, still sits quite far below anything with RPM control

I have to agree with you on the DF64 workflow. I bought one to go alongside my Niche Zero because i wanted to try a flat burr grinder plus it was labled as the "Niche Killer" so i had to check it out. I actually find it laughable that anyone with any knowledge of grinders would call it a Niche killer. It's a horrible grinder to use when comparing the workflows. The Niche is in a different league. The DF64 does produce nice alternative flavour profiles to the Niche but I get no joy at all from using it. This DF83 looks even worse tho. It vibrates to alarming levels. There doesn't seem to be any care and attention put into the designs of these DF grinders but they are cheaper (altho not cheap) than most alternatives. I think the price point and availability is what has made the DF grinders kinda popular rather than them being anything special. They are most certainly not Niche killers tho and i don't think anyone who had both the Niche and DF64 in their kitchen would pick the DF64 if they had to keep only one after using both for any amount of time.
@BensCoffeeRants
@BensCoffeeRants Год назад
@@Tass... The DF64 makes a great complmentary grinder especially with ssp MP to the Niche not a replacement. You're right the Niche workflow is much nicer and out of the box it's a more refined product but also more expensive.
@BensCoffeeRants
@BensCoffeeRants Год назад
Df83 I think learned from some weaknesses of the DF64, retention and declumper screen seem to be greatly improved. With the funnel included workflow and need for 3rd party addons has been reduced. Now in many areas DF83 is the same price as the Niche and taste wise I thought they were actually pretty similar. The df83 was consistently smoother though with a little less body and more flavour clarity. That was with non seasoned burrs in df83 vs seasoned in the Niche. Workflow and cleanliness is alright in DF83 so now I'd say it's more of a Niche Killer than Df64 was. Still louder and has some vibration from the powerful motor which vibrates the funnel if you use it. But its faster and more versatile since it can grind direct to portafilter and do coarser brews well and can also upgrade to SSP burrs which unfortunately in 83mm size cost a good amount more than the 64mm size did!
