In this episode its all about the antennas for the Walksnail system. And to make it short: it really makes sense to get other! I will try to explain how big a difference there is and what I've been through to find that out.
This has taken far to long time but it wasn't possible to make faster due to the mentioned issues, weather conditions and a evil man flu :)
The most test flights did happen with a T1 Ranger! Big thanks to @Crunklefloop for the support :)

This video made me subscribe to this channel. I really like the presentation, how clear it was, and the cheap lollipop antennas that I also bought made me assured I made the right choice. Good one.

This is the one I've waited for, and it was worth the wait! lol Interesting results with those antennas for sure. I almost bought the Hammers but couldn't find much info on them, so I went with the Cherries instead. That's pretty wild how the canopy grabbed onto the tail and made it back home! haha What are the odds?
@JustFPV-net

Pure luck I guess … and then having it on camera… must be luck 🍀 Hammers are getting their chance next time on the harrier and I’m curious how that ends.

I added a Hammer LHCP on my 4" with the Walksnail 1s nano v1 vtx and the difference is night and day. They're really good for what it is. Next up are a pair of Lollipop 4+ on my full size avatar VTX. TrueRC stubbies on the Fatshark DomiSnail goggles are enough for me. Got the patches and long Omni's for the goggles for when I finally build my Walksnail fixed wing.

@@JustFPV-net well I just got the 'still in development" checkmark in my mind. And I went from analog to Walksnail, so can't complain about range and image 😎 Latest stable firmware is great, but people tend to set all the BS settings to ON and then complain about the image quality while they have focus mode on. @JustFPV-net 11 месяцев назад
Yes ... they really changed the way I had to move. Now I'm kinda back where I was with analog tracking my plane with my head. And the change is minimal: same range, better image and no interference. For that I'm happy. After all the antennas do the transmission ... better take to ones which work the best

@@JustFPV-net What was it about antenna trackers that made you stop using one?
@JustFPV-net
@JustFPV-net 10 месяцев назад
I Found it to be easier to get out there without to much gear. So having a a good range without a tracker is fine for me- no need to use a tracker and many items that could become a show stopper for the flight as one item may not work as intended
@salukikev

I feel like the overall length of the alternate examples & resulting mounting difference would significantly effect the result. I'd be interested to see a test with antenna barrels located at an identical position so we can evaluate apples to apples. It's easy enough to add a little extension tube to stock antennas.
@JustFPV-net
@JustFPV-net Год назад
Maybe I will give it a try with a new VTX next time. But from what I did fly and test, the difference with the default antennas didn't match up at all. The Harrier has wider fuselage and the antenna got separated a lot more that in the T1. That didn't change on the outcome of the distance. At about 3.x km the bitrate went to 0. That's not the same effect as with these antennas.

Thanks for the interesting video. Something doesn't make any sense in the first graph, where the same antenna setup would give you almost twice the range when operating the transmitter with only a little over 2dB more! This is very unrealistic and difference should be much less. There must have been other outside factors that gave you these results. Sometimes if the VTX cooling isn't well enough the TX might throttle itself down to 700mW in order not to kill itself thermally, in these cases the difference is logically near to zero. I totally agree that the stock antennas are a simplified compromise that is just good enough for most nearby activities. Be aware that high antenna gain doesn't come without trading in high emitted radiation power with the angle of radiation. So the more the gain you have the narrower the useable antenna angle gets, hence you have to track your flightpath carefully else you might loose it. Make sure auto RTH is active and if this happens don't make the mistake I once did, holding the antenna in all directions along the horizon when the plane is a mile above you circling while waiting to reconnect ... so hold it straight up and you will be back in control getting it down, hopefully before the battery dies! It should be common sense to always carefully select your flying spot to be ideally up on a hill with no trees around or if in your flat environment, on a large field with ideally no trees to assure the angle towards the horizon is not obstructed even at a low elevation pitch. You should always check the wind direction ahead of time and look for a site that gives you the best visibility towards the wind and always try to fly against the wind, which has two major advantages. 1. If your battery gets weaker than expected there will always be a good chance to return with a fraction of the power needed to reach that point in the first place and if at higher altitudes, you may be able to return to home with motor off. Wind velocities may be way higher above, but also be aware the wind direction may very different, sometimes even opposite - take a close look at the clouds or on various aviation weather websites that show wind at different altitudes. (e.g. UAV Forecast app, Meteoblue or Ogimet) 2. If you see a rain front coming towards you the way back will sure be without any risk of rain, because you will always be ahead of the weather coming home Have fun flying everbody

What a wonderful response ... thanks for all your thoughts. I guess you are right about the outside factor ... different locations have different rf noise in the area. Currently I'm not aware of the VTX is capable of reducing its power to 700mw by itself. But usually I don't fiddle on that as its far than enough currently :) Have a good flight, mate
