It was the only 10 I gave this year. Then again the Deftones-Esque tracks and the Patton worship are definitely my camp. Same with Fugue. For a band who put out both Calculating Infinity and Ire Works this was a wonderful send off to em

This, in my opinion, is one of the Dillinger Escape Plan's finest hours. "Dissociation" wears some influences on its sleeve, of course - I can hear Squarepusher on "Fugue", Deftones on "Symptom of Terminal Illness", Mahavishnu Orchestra's jazz fusion on "Low Feels Blvd" and Mr. Bungle on various spots throughout the album - but... it's distinctly Dillinger and it's the most bold and experimental (coherently so) they've ever been (yes, this is even bolder than Ire Works, and much more coherent in its diving into the avant-garde realm). It's consistent and it manages to balance immaculately all the elements that make TDEP such a great band: the jazziness and the heaviness, the free-flowing nature of their music and the tight-as-clinking-glass chaotic and mathematically dizzying sections of their song structures... everything on this machine feels so refined and well-oiled. Still shocked with the band's break-up but at least they left us off with a tremendous, earth-shattering bang. And seriously, that fucking final riff on Honeysuckle destroyed so many cosmic dimensions in one minute.
@bladechild2449
@bladechild2449 8 лет назад
I don't really see how Ire Works is less coherent. In fact, out of the records post Miss Machine, it's the one record that gels their softer and heavier sides most coherently. Mouth of Ghosts is better than anything they experiment with on here. If TDEP have had one fault since Ire Works it's their heavier stuff lacks great identity. There have been no great, punchy and almost catchy riff works like Panasonic Youth and Sunshine... since some of the stuff on Ire Works.
@rafaeltrindade7009
@rafaeltrindade7009 8 лет назад
I love Ire Works, don't get me wrong, but it was a much more fragmented and abstract approach to experimentation and a lot of ideas in it felt very off-the-wall, while on Dissociation every nuance of boldness feels part of the grander scheme of things. I will however disagree with your comment from the part you mention Mouth of Ghosts (love that song btw). Their heavier stuff doesn't lack identity at all, it still is very brittle, distinct and idiosyncratic. "Option Paralysis" might be my favorite TDEP record so there's that. "There have been no great, punchy and almost catchy riff works like Panasonic Youth and Sunshine... since some of the stuff on Ire Works"? I disagree, again. So many songs on Option Paralysis, One of Us Is the Killer and of course on Dissociation showcase exactly that with tons of cadency and consistency.

This probably is their worst album. I hate the mixing, Fugue is interesting but out of place, and underdone songwriting in certain parts make this their worst and it's not even close.
@VizionzBlur
@VizionzBlur 6 лет назад
the mixing is in fact probably their best......from a normal music standpoint....the only issue i would say is that gregs vocals are distorted way too often and it isnt very pleasant . While the songwriting does get a little lackluster.....lets be honest...you are here for the music and not the lyrics...greg uses his voice as an instrument very well here with amazing vocal twists in honeysuckle. That being said...i dont agree with the coherency of this album...some of the sounds sound really similar in parts. And btw fugue has no reason to be there.

For anyone that is disappointed about this being the last Dillinger record (and for those somehow unaware of this fact), Ben Weinmann and Greg Pusciato have their own bands with members of Mastodon (another epic technical heavy band). Ben does guitars for Giraffe Tongue Orchestra with Brent Hinds, and Greg does guitar and vocals for Killer Be Killed with Troy Sanders. To me, this record is incredible in itself simply because it fulfils Ben's dream of wanting Dillinger to 'pull a seinfeld and go out with a bang'.

@TrebuL
@TrebuL 8 лет назад
This album is more of a grower than One of Us was, as One of Us is probably their most accessible album. This album experiments a lot more, it's incredibly dense, and may even seem disorienting on the first listen or two (hence the album title). The 7/10 score doesn't bother me because you didn't like the album as much as I did, but the score seems a bit arbitrary as the content of the review makes it seems higher than that. You obviously listen to a shit ton of music daily and because of that I feel like you heard this album a couple times and thought it's just Dillinger doing what they usually do and put together a somewhat lazy review.
@Gore171459
@Gore171459 8 лет назад
TrebuL I love this album but for him to rate it what he did makes sense to me because they do beat the horse a bit. Some riffs here and there remind me of some they've done before, some of the structures feel a bit similar to older songs, etc. But for me it never gets to the point of them sounding stale and when they get weird and experimental it totally works for me. I thought this was a really great swan song.
@TrebuL
@TrebuL 8 лет назад
I will say that while I enjoyed every track on here, Manufacturing Discontent & Apologies Not Included didn't bring anything new or particularly exciting to the table like the previous 7 tracks did. I can understand those tracks being lackluster to people and that not everyone will like Fugue either. I feel like because of how talented the band is people can set unrealistic expectations for them, just like with all great acts in music. Yes you will hear bits and pieces that sound like previous songs they have written, etc. However, I think while each record they have released holds the trademark Dillinger sound, each record is still distinct and unique from the others, for me at least. And yea I agree this album is a fantastic way to go out.

I mean, did you expect him to start genuflecting and wringing his hands at the prospect of their breakup? He says, "RIP, you know, these guys had a great run. All the admiration of the world and godspeed, I guess." Pretty respectful and a good sendoff. They're probably not one of his favorite bands but it's clear that he respects them and their talents, and given his comments at the beginning he seems a bit confused/disappointed as to why they broke up at all.

Between multiple business ventures and other musical projects, they simply have A LOT going on. I think they'll be back (full-time) as a band in ~8 years. I, also, think they'll do one/two shows a year until that full-time commitment is announced further down the road.

Ben will be pushing 50 in 8 years lol. As much as I love the band, I'd like for them to embrace the artistic statement they are making with their breakup. However, I think an EP and a few reunion shows could definitely make sense around that time, but with age catching up to them I don't think they could ever go back to playing full time.

I believe they have stated that the lyrics and the title weren't about the breakup of the band. The artwork, however, seems fairly obviously to refer to that of their first LP Calculating Infinity, being as it depicts shattered vacuum tubes. Also having just started to get into this one, I think I have noticed a few musical nods to earlier albums, so I wonder if there are various little subtle references and easter eggs hidden throughout.

I thinks its cause of the well running drying thing you said and the possibility of them dying if they keep doing live shows. Went to the one they had on the 19th of october and fuckin yeesh it was intense.

Actually, he touches on it in this video without actually saying it, but the song structure in this album was amazing. The unexpected bridges to random jazz riffs, etc. I am one of the biggest Dillinger fans around, but my one criticism with Dillinger over the years was that almost every single song used a similar song structure. Crazy intense to start off a song, then break down into something softer and more melodic, then end with crazyness. This album finally gets that last part of "math" that i think was always missing from Dillinger's "math-core". The song structures weren't all the same thing and really made you wondering what was coming next in the song.

The more I come back to this album the more I feel that it’s a 10 across the board. This may be my favorite album of all time, it means so much to me.

*R I P* I'd probably give it a solid 8, or at LEAST a strong 7. I want to see some more mind-numbing metal on your channel, and it's less to do with the fact that you don't do it often, but because I tend to find that you don't like it as much as other genres that you've reviewed (i.e. your reviews for Meshuggah and Fallujah have often been leaving much to be desired). Does it have to be a new album? I've got 5 for you. 1.) Dance Gavin Dance- Mothership 2.) Ihsahn- Arktis. 3.) Obscura- Akroasis 4.) Intronaut- The Direction of Last Things 5.) anything by Between The Buried And Me and seriously, let's get a legitimate review of Monoliths and Dimensions by Sunn 0))). Please?

I think it deserved a slightly higher rating than you gave it, by the way you were speaking. But, in my opinion, I think this was their best record yet, much better than their last and a perfect swan song to end their career.
