The Dim-Bulb Tester

Take an incandescent bulb and put it in series with a load.You now have a current-limiter. A Dim-Bulb Tester is exactly that. How you want to expand from that simple concept is up to you with meters, switches and sockets.

Hi, will a 130v 100 watts rough service bulb work when testing a sansui 200 wpc receiver? How about a 130v 150w halogen flood light? New to this hobby. Thanks

I don't see why not. All the bulb acts as is a very high wattage resistor.

Do you have a plan on what you'll do when incandescent bulbs are gone? I'm noticing it's increasingly tougher to find the old school bulbs with everything going to LED.

I have a stock of many, many incandescent bulbs of different wattages and types. It's excessive, yes and even now this house is entirely converted to LED but for props, demos and specialty applications such as compartment heaters or a dim bulb tester I should be good for the rest of my life.

The Kill-A-Watt is just a meter you plug in between your device and the wall. gives you a bunch of handy information such as how many watts are being used and how many amps something is drawing or what the voltage coming out of the wall currently is. they;ve been coming down in price over the last decade and I think they are $25-$30 now.

Just a small thing to say......you don't need to have the circuit broken in 2 places......you just need 1 switch at the bottom to the light and load......Gord....Rework tech.....other than that good.....just needed to see it in action though.....
