Chris Webber's beef with Don Nelson was a power struggle that ruined the Warriors

In 1993 Don Nelson and the Warriors put all their eggs in the Chris Webber basket. They gave up three first round picks to get him, and then loaded his contract with incentives including an opt-out clause.
Nelson desperately needed a center, and he could make Webber play center. Did Webber want to play center for the Warriors? Well, no. But, c’mon, you had an outstanding, strong-willed player, and an outstanding, strong-willed coach teaming up! What could possibly go wrong? Egos colliding in an irreversible explosion with ramifications that lasted for years? Yep. You guessed it. If this beef were on a menu, it’d have three chili peppers next to it.

Small ball started with Red Auerbach, who Nellie played for. Russell was not a back to the basket center. EVERY SINGLE other center in the league was. Russell was not even the third option on offense. EVERY SINGLE other center in the league was the first or second option. Red and Russell let Sam Jones, Cousy, Havlicek, Nellie, Ramsey, and Heinsohn do all the scoring, and mostly from the perimeter. Yes, Nellie, D'Antoni and others expanded on it and of course today that' all they do. Red and Nellie used it to be different and because other teams weren’t used to defending it. Today it’s used because the centers (actually all the players) are SOFT and have zero post up skills, also because almost every player in the league just wants to shoot threes all game. It’s not original, creative or hard to defend because every team in the league is doing it. It's boring and unimaginative. In addition, due to the lack of physical defense, all small players can thrive now.

Beef History ideas: Bobby Knight vs Indiana Joe Gomez vs Raheem Sterling 29 MLB teams vs Rob Manfred and the Houston Asterisks
@broaddusmarines
@broaddusmarines 3 года назад
Matthew Doel: I’m an IU fan to the core and I’m really torn about him. Bobby Knight probably has the greatest basketball mind to ever walk the planet. He basically won championships with Isiah Thomas and a bunch of midwestern farmboys. That being said, he was/is a miserable human being, a narcissist, and a bully. He probably knows it too. His comment about “if you’re getting raped, you might as well lay back and enjoy it” should have gotten him fired on the spot. IU tolerated his BS because he was still hanging National Championship and Big Ten Championship banners and he had a cult-like following in the state of Indiana. But yeah, in retrospect, Bobby Knight should have been fired about ten years before he actually was. In the end, both Bobby Knight as well as Indiana University lost.

What's kind of ironic is that both Webber and Nelson were probably more alike than they were different. Both were 2 of the most talented ever in there respective field. Both won at some point wherever they went though never a championship (Webber and the kings should have and probably would have in 02 but thats another conversation) and both had complicated personalities. With that said, that owner made a historic mistake. I would have Kept Webb and got rid of Nelson.

I've never heard once that anybody including Don Nelson and the Warriors organization or any organization valuing Shawn Bradley over Chris Webber. Even before Shawn Bradley was deemed a bust, Chris Webber was above him in every draft board across the league. The Warriors having to settle for Chris Webber simply didn't happen under all circumstances.
@gpk724
@gpk724 2 года назад
I was confused about that myself. If the Warriors/Nelson wanted Bradley so badly, why didn’t they just take him/have the Magic take him #1? The only thing stopping them from getting Bradley was the Sixers at #2 and they just leapfrogged them. It doesn’t make any sense unless they valued Webber more than Bradley.
@sammycampbell1654
@sammycampbell1654 2 года назад
Nelson was head over heels for Bradley. One of his first moves after coming to Dallas was trading for him (I think it was the Mashburn trade?).... he was hell bent on building around Bradley, and Bradley finally breaking through and being an elite center. Shawn Bradley owes Don Nelson a lot. Without Nelson's man crush, Bradley is out of the league after the 96-97 season. Instead he played 8 more years, mostly because Nelson convinced Cuban that "this is the big man we need" like Obi Wan Kenobi. The Mavs were stuck with Bradley and an albatross of a salary bigger than the Morman big man.
@sammycampbell1654
@sammycampbell1654 2 года назад
@@gpk724 Orlando wouldn't trade the pick. Trade didn't go down till after Philly had already taken Bradley at 2 and the Warriors were already on the clock. The real question is, with Bradley off the board, why did Nelson give up Penny (pick 3) and 3 more future first rounders for Webber?
@andu1854
@andu1854 Год назад
Shawn Bradley should have never been taken in first round, he was nothing special at BYU, and he was built like Chet, only without much skill besides blocking shots and being on way too many posters being dunked on, and being probably the most un-fun teammate… I never got why teams thought that beam pole was anything special and he would have not fit into the Warriors fast paced offense as he also had not athleticism

Wrong!!! Don Nelson was an underachiever. He had some loaded teams in the 80s and couldn’t even sniff an NBA Final. He was good with gimmicky teams, but didn’t know what to do with NBA championship talent while at Milwaukee. I bet Larry Brown could have went to the finals at least twice with the talent Don Nelson had. Chris Weber had a decent career and is probably one of the ten best power forwards in NBA history. Where would you rank Don Nelson all time as a coach? He doesn’t even come to mind as a coach at all to me.
